Fine Day
Fine Day
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
'Fine Day' is a track that stands out as a defining movement in dance music - merging ethereal female vocals and the ambient house sound synonymous with other popular groups of that era, such as the Orb and Enigma. Kirsty Kawkshaw has dusted off the sleeve jacket, re-laid the vocals and called in progressive genius James Holden & trancemeister Mike Koglin for remix duties. Tracks, 'Mainline' (Mike Koglin Radio Edit, Mike Koglin 12'' Mix, James Holden Remix & Video). EMI. 2002.

Jeff Tweedy might carry the name recognition, but the rest of his band-on-the-side carries the mail on the fourth release from this Midwest all-star group. Though the Wilco leader teams with the Jayhawks' Gary Louris on a pair of nimble pop songs--the elegantly strummed "Listen Joe" and Kinks cover "Strangers"--it's Louris who's clearly at the head of the class with self-assured vocals ("Another Fine Day," "Think About Yourself"), lush harmonies ("Long Time Ago") and those unmistakable guitar leads ("Frying Pan Eyes"). Soul Asylum guitarist Dan Murphy's obligatory rocker "Hurricane" is a high point, as is the album's lead track "You Make It Easy," which has Kraig Johnson warbling over a thumping piano lead and chunky fuzz guitar. But most welcome among the 15 songs are two contributions from Louris's fellow Jayhawk Marc Perlman: the refreshing "Corvette" and "Cure for This," a '60s-speckled pop song sung by Muni Loco, the wife of producer Paco Loco and the first female to grace a recording by Golden Smog. --Scott Holter
Album Description
It might sound like hype, but as hype nips at your ears every day from every corner, who gives a damn? You're smart. Your BS detector is strong; take this missive with a grain of salt, but don't talk yourself out of opening your ears to this mix-by-one-band-how-can-this-be-one-band? that fell from the skies of Puerto Santa Maria, Spain and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Start with Gary Louris and Kraig Jarret Johnson's "You Make It Easy." A breezy love song about breezy commitment. Listen. To that solo. To those harmonies. Dare yourself not to sing along. Try to play "name the influences" and you will have fun but you will fail.
Then check out "Hurricane," and hear Dan Murphy, singing his guts out and having, like the title track he co-penned says, "another fine day." Dig Louris and Jeff Tweedy's "Listen Joe," and how they sing to themselves and a long-gone friend, "surprise, surprise, everyone dies."
Listen. To what every new breed that comes along calls "old school," to sounds baked into these guys since the days of vinyl. Feel the embers of all the mystics, all the Gram Parsons and Eagles and Zeppelin and Buzzcocks and Flaming Lips and Gorillaz (Kraig's fave of the moment) records and all the rest that they've ingested. Truly, these cats have forgotten more records than the rest of us have sold to the used record store.
"Don't it blow your mind like the first time? The dream is never over," they ask, on "Corvette," with the exuberance of high-schoolers playing together in the garage for the first of many times. Listen. To "Corvette". Then listen to Louris's "Gone". They have been through death and love and war and all the other vagaries of middle age in these new Middle Ages, and this is the sound of them coming out the other side - or at least trying to come out the other side - with friendship and rock `n' roll as their guides.

better after a few listens.......2007-02-05
This album is seriouly influenced by the 60's and 70's era music. If you don't like that era, look somewhere else. Someone here stated that its been done before and done better. True, it has. But if you can find this record in a used store, it is definately worth a listen. It encompasses all the musical style of the last 4 decades and does it quite well. I can hear influneces of Beatles and Dylan on the last track, which just might qualify as the best on the record. So if you like the 60's and 70's music and are looking for something a little different, this just might be the record you are looking for. Don't hesitate. Buy it today.
Smooth country chocolate pie.......2006-12-26
Gary Lourig does hold his weight Another Fine Day, an album that mostly rests on his shoulders. Sorry to admit that besides the last song on the album, the best tunes on here are the two that Tweedy co-wrote. In acceptance that this would have been a finer album had Tweedy performed more of the labour, I still thought this was really good 70's inspired kuntry rock that sometimes reminded me of the Knack and more often a Thin Lizzy/Loggins and Messina collision.
This one goes to the used CD store..........2006-10-14
I had such high hopes for this one! However, after about a dozen tries, I cannot stand this music. It is uninteresting and possibly contains the worst songwriting and lyrics I have heard in years. Or maybe it's the schmultzy music that is so unbelievably weak. Whatever it is, it has no magic, no risk, no intelligence.
Somewhat disappointed.......2006-09-15
Maybe a few more listens will help, but this album reminds me in a lot of ways of Bubble Gum music from the late 60's. Way too cute. After eight years I expected a lot more.
Subjectively speaking, a great disk. Period........2006-09-12
Okay, these user reviews are plagued by a high degree of subjectivity, though what is objective about music? Plainly speaking, after listening to AFD for four weeks now, I believe this disc is quite exceptional both in its variety, the quality of songwriting, and overall production. This was my first exposure to Golden Smog, but since I have explored (that is, purchased) "Weird Tales." I just don't have the same feeling toward that disc as I do for AFD. For the record, I am not overly enamored with Wilco's recorded output, and had no previous exposure to the Jayhawks. Another Fine Day, then, needs no antecedents to make a salient musical impression. I am not given to hyperbole, but can best sum up my feeling about AFD this way: I have already downloaded it in its entirety from ITMS, but am now ordering two physical discs from Amazon--one for my 24-year old son, and one just for posterity.

Customer Reviews:
A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Great songs and fond memories of the movie.......2007-05-11
When I saw the movie- the first thing that hit me was the beauty of the intro song (One fine day) sang by Nathalie Merchant..wow! then "Hove I told you lately?" sang by Van morrison, which is a nice change form the Rod teward version.. and then tehre is Ella Fitzgerald singing "Isn't romantic?" just for this song the cd is priceless!! have u tried finding it in recollections? i tried and its almost hopeless.
Predictable but nice........2007-03-15
Nice soundtrack. Cuts are listenable and enjoyable. There are a couple of songs on it that I wanted. Since the price was VERY tempting, I gave in and purchased it.
Chick Flick.......2006-11-03
This is one of my most favorite chick flicks! I could watch this over and over again and never get tired of it!
Kids are the best matchmakers.......2006-10-07
Clooney and Pfieffer have great chemistry and energy in this romantic comedy of single parents who find love the second time around. It's like a potential step-siblings version of The Parent Trap when the little boy and girl scheme to get their respective parent a date. A positive message on how second chances can happen if you have the eyes and optimism of a child.
Don't Lose Hope!.......2006-08-27
Great movie for the divorced and/or dumped segment of society. Hang in there, it will get better.

A Fine Soundtrack of a Fine Movie.......2007-07-15
I basically love the movie, because it's poetic along with Montana wilderness and I am a fly-fisherman. I have just bought this CD as my background music while I am tying flies. And it works very very well. Each track reminds me of each moment of the movie, especially, tracks from Track 25 "Yes, Quite a Day" to Track 31 "Hauted by Waters" just make me poignant. An exclusive interview with the composer is also very unique and worth to hear about the background of the movie. "The Moment That Could Not Last" last only 1:24, how about in our real life? Is it gonna be like Paul's? I am hautend by this soundtrack.
Review(How original huh?).......2007-01-25
Personally, this is one of the absolute BEST soundtracks I have ever listened to. The music is calming, soothing, and truly wonderful. The music is so well put together and nicely coordinated and I feel like I am watching the movie again...it also makes great to read the Laura Ingalls Wilder books too. Try it...you might be suprised how well it fits. :)
Music that transcends simple meaning..........2006-07-16
Mark Isham's score for the motion picture A River Runs Through It is one of the most memorable and emotionally captivating film scores of all time. The arrangements of strings, piano, woodwinds create a meditative and reflective range of music throughout the film capturing all the emotions of this powerful drama about an American family in rural Montana. It is at once deeply haunting, moving, nostalgic and sentimental and captures the innocence and beauty of nature and childhood, as well as darker themes of rebellion and tragedy. There is a profound sense of emotion that is embedded within the music that sweeps over me every time I hear it. A combination of happiness, sadness, excitement, and reflection. There is something simply sweeping and majestic within his music. I couldn't think of anything else that would better compliment the film. Highly recommended.

A really Fine Romance.......2007-07-05
It doesn't get any better than these two playing these guys! Some of it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Use your imagination... It's all just swell.
A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08
"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~
Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.
These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.
One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.
My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."
My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."
The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."
The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."
Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)
A musical treat.

Customer Reviews:
"The Summer Smiles, The Summer Knows".......2006-01-07
"When Monica Mancini set out to record this retrospective of songs from films, she clearly had her passions in order. Monica comes by her affinity for the medium honestly, having grown up in a house permeated with some of the best film music in history, from the pen of her incredibly prolific father, Henry. So it is no surprise that this collection has all the artistry, pathos, and musicality that it so deserves." ~ Dave Grusin, Liner Notes - 2002 ~
Dave Grusin, an expert arranger, conductor, pianist, film scorer himself has described this album so perfectly. The choice of material in this CD is impeccable with Monica Mancini's graceful interpretations and not to mention the flawlessly beautiful arrangements by Torrie Zito, John Calandrelli, Michael Lang, Patrick Williams, George Doering, Ray Ellis, Harvey Cohen and John Frizzell. There are twelve theme songs from various remarkable films in this recording and most of the tracks were backed up by an orchestra with the exception of a few.
The theme song from the movie "Summer of '42" penned by the creative husband-and-wife-team of Alan & Marilyn Bergman and composer Michel Legrand "The Summer Knows" is one of my top choices from this collection. Splendidly arranged by Michael Lang and Harvey Cohen on string section, she renders this timeless song so true to its essence and making it the most beautiful version, bar none!
Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "Alfie" (from the movie of the same title), is a moving song accompanied only by the sublime piano playing of Michael Lang. She has an exquisitely beautiful voice, the kind that still shines without the trimmings and backing up of an orchestra, (the kind that still glows even on A Cappella singing). Another affecting song and a favorite of mine is "Too Late Now," a Burton Lane and Alan Jay Lerner treasure and theme from the movie "Royal Wedding." The orchestral arrangement was done by Torrie Zito, a fine pianist/arranger/conductor who worked briefly with the legendary musical icon, Frank Sinatra. I loved the way he injected a classical touch on his arrangement, almost sounding like one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces. I would say that this is one of the best tracks. Ditto with another Torrie Zito arrangement, Johnny Mandel and Paul Webster's "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper." Ms. Mancini gave these classics the retire-the-trophy-treatments and made them her very own.
The lovely opener, Ennio Morricone and Gregg Field's "Cinema Paradiso," arranged by Jorge Calandrelli, is also one of the standouts. Another beauty is "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from the movie "The Promise" with piano accompaniment by Michael Lang. The finale "Over The Rainbow" from "The Wizard of Oz" is simply divine with orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis.
This recording produced by Ms. Mancini's musician husband, Gregg Field, truly showed off not only the singer's vocal artistry, but her classy and elegant style of singing. Thank you Ms. Mancini for your wonderful gift of music. Music to enjoy forever!
Magnificent Monica!.......2004-06-28
My favorite song of all time is "The Shadow of Your Smile" from the movie "The Sandpiper". Until now, the 2 best versions of it were by Barbra Streisand and Tony Bennett. By FAR, this is THE best version of that song. Pure, without "vocal gymnastics", screaming, yelping or other artificial "stylings".. here it is sung as it was written, perfectly performed with beautiful orchestration. The rest of the album is no less miraculous. It is stunning. "A Day in the Life of a Fool", "Cinema Paradiso" and the haunting and tender "Theme from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" are just as lavish and well-crafted. Okay Monica, now could you release one album a year instead of one album every 3 years? Pleeeeassee??
She's chocolate and creme!.......2004-01-29
Seeing Monica Mancini on stage singing the theme from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, hearing Gregg Field's drums, seeing the multi-media film clip behind her... is like having chocolate and creme!
Monica does not belt you to death, she does not yell at you, she does not punch notes into your being... she soothes you to her, lures you, with a voice that has been hidden for years.
Her voice is perfect in pitch, tone, and her ability to hit every single note as if she were born to sing. Clearly having inherited talent from her mom Ginny and her dad Henry.
On this cd I love the way she embraces other composers songs..."Baby Mine" just one of them. I about melted when she sang that song.
She has a great sense of humor on stage, is spontaneous, and is herself.
She has a great secure personality and stage persona and she has the family roots to give you a chill in your bones when she shares them with you in stories and song.
Hearing her sing live is like being home!
Astonishing.......2003-09-04
I sample A LOT of jazz vocalists (for some reason most contemporary jazz vocalists seem to be female) but initially dismissed Monica Mancici because she's the child of a famous father. Henry was very classy and as accomplished as musicians get, and such qualities rarely get passed down the line. What a mistake. I only heard her Mercer album because it was -- thankfully -- being played in a store I was visiting. I bought it, loved it, and was primed for this collection. A solid Five Stars. There's new stuff here (for me) and old songs done splendidly. Over The Rainbow, aside from its original iconic take by "Judy," has been covered hundreds of times. And Monica's take? Quite simply as good as any. With this release I've recognized what I love about Monica's voice: Aside from being simply perfect technically, her voice glows like a crackling fireplace! I mourned the recent passing of Rosemary Clooney, and now feel that there's a relatively new vocalist who I can follow for many years. Live or recorded, I'll be there ...
Monica's Latest is the best yet.......2003-06-04
Sorry, but I don't worry about the nuts and bolts of every particular detail of an album. I play what I enjoy and Monica's albums bring me that enjoyment. Cinema Paradiso has rarely left my CD Player. I'm only sorry she appears not to have a web page. Where someone like Michael Jackson or Dixie Chicks are all over the Internet, virtually no information is available concerning Monica Mancini. It's impossible to find a concert schedule. I hope she produces another album soon, I've worn out her others.

As Hammerstein writes in the opening song, "Many dames with lofty aims strive for lofty goals"--and Te Kanawa strives for successful crossover. Her beautiful singing exhibits impeccable diction and excellent phrasing; but "A Fine Romance" lacks anger and humor, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" lacks a storyteller, and "All the Things You Are" lacks romanticism. However, happy songs like "All Through the Day," "Look for the Silver Lining," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," are successfully interpreted. Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations enhance Kern's beauty through his captivating use of obbligato instruments. A pleasant, if not wholly satisfactory, listening experience. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
kiri kern.......2007-03-29
Kiri is sensational on this CD. Jerome Kern music is stupendous and the arrangements superb. Three top esses.
Kiri sing Kern is a great experience.......2004-01-18
I love the way she sings Kern's songs. Though certainly not opera, Kern's songs benefit from an an operatic approach--not all of them, but certainly ones such Smoke gets in your Eyes, The song is you, All the things you are. I love Kern;s songs sung in many styles but Kiri's way is one of the best.
On the other hand, I did not like Kiri singing Berlin.
Lacks Splendor.......2002-09-01
Though I do enjoy Kiri's interpretation of most music, and this CD was decent, I did not find any piece particularly memorable.
The voice is undeniably beautiful, and Kiri has managed to keep her maturing voice sounding somewhat young, yet I find that I much prefer her rendition of "The Laughing Song" to that of "Smoke Gets in YOur Eyes."
If you love Kern, and couldn't care less who performs it, than purchase this CD. If you are a fan of Kiris', then perhaps it would be best to avoid this purchase...for it is not a shining star in her vast collection of CDs. All in all, it was a disappointment.
White Glove Kern.......2001-05-20
I am the first to admit that most "crossover" albums, be they of classical performers singing pop or vice versa never quite cross over. This album does splendidly. Kern's music is the most related to classical operetta , and therefore the least jazziest. Operatic soprano Kiri Te Kanawa gives luscious, heartfelt readings of these wonderful songs, backed by glamorous orchestrations. Hearing a voice of such opulence and beauty in this music is a rare treat. Just listen to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ,"Long Ago and Far Away" or "The Song is You" and prepare to be swept away to another, more elegant time.
mildly disappointing.......2000-09-30
Sometimes cross-over works, sometimes not. While Kiri te Kanawa has a beautiful voice, she never gets into the idiom of these Jerome Kern masterpieces sufficiently to convey their stories or their subtleties. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes especially stands out, she sings it with none of the pathos the song demands and her version pales compared to the Platters. The orchestral arrangements are decent and in many of the songs the purity of her voice is enough to carry them, but overall I would say this is a disappointing example of a crossover record. Ms. te Kanawa should stick to what she does best.

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

A Fine Day to Exit, the sixth album in 12 years from Liverpool's portentous Anathema, sees them moving away from their gothic roots and toward a strange hinterland where the dynamics and brooding passion of Radiohead's OK Computer goes hand in hand with the dark edge of the final Soundgarden records and the full-on rock power of Cradle of Filth. Vincent Cavanagh's deep, sonorous voice invites comparison with both Chris Cornell and Roger Walters, and songs like the piano-led "Pressure" and the heartfelt title track revel in a sense of isolation and grandeur. "Underworld," meanwhile, repeats the line "This feeling is over" like it's the penultimate event of the band's existence. While a little too in thrall to Radiohead in spots, this is still a powerful and moving album. --Everett True

Not the Anathema you may be used to........2006-08-26
Comparing A Fine Day To Exit to earlier works such as Pentecost III, Serenades or the Silent Enigma would not only be unfair, it would be impossible. Gone are the death growls. In it's place is an environment that's strangely tranquil yet compelling. There is a sense of power here too. It would be a grave injustice to cast this wonderful work aside because it doesn't sound like the earlier albums. Other reviews mention Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree. While there may be hints of these, Anathema is copying no one and is going in a direction all there own.
Brilliant!.......2006-06-23
A Fine Day to Exit is truly one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard. Anathema were one of the bands that pioneered doom metal back in the early 90s, but have since evolved their style into a kind of alternative/progressive rock.
The opener, "Pressure," reminds me of Coldplay and OK Computer-era Radiohead. The piano and guitar stomp along in a strong 4/4 beat that leads into a soaring and uplifting chorus. "Release" is a gorgeous song, followed by "Looking Outside Inside" which reminds me of earlier albums, particularly Judgement. The first two minutes are harmless, but it unexpectedly launches into a fast and epic second half. "Leave No Trace" is peaceful and calm, yet leads into the guitar driven "Underworld," the only song that really uses distortion to powerful effect. The first line of the next track "Barriers" describes the song perfectly: "floating with nowhere to go." This track really demonstrates the power that 3/4 can have.
The album really reaches its peak in the final three songs. "Panic" borders on punk. It's very fast and out of place, yet somewhat restrained. The verses are delivered in a quick, urgent voice while the drum kit has the life beaten out of it. After a short ambient transition, the album's centrepiece "A Fine Day to Exit" begins. This one song contains one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard. This is THE Anathema song you have to hear. Well, this or "Judgement." It's one of the only songs on the album that truly sound progressive (along with Release), as it starts from a quiet yet haunting verse and snowballs into an incredible rage. After almost seven minutes of absolute sonic heaven, the album finally dulls down with the beautiful closer "Temporary Peace," which contains a sad, yet uplifting melody, assisted by female backing vocals and aching lyrics such as "I swear I never knew how it couldn't be, all the waves are washing over all that hurts inside of me..." and eventually becomes nothing more than the sound of the sea, a sound which sums up the album better than you could imagine.
Anathema may not have the recognition they deserve, but that does not prevent this album from being absolutely essential, particularly if you like bands such as Radiohead and Sigur Ros. There's a sort of contant powerful ambience on this album. It could lull you to sleep, yet it could also blow you away. There's fury, sadness, melancholy and finally, in the closer, it reaches what the lyrics describe as "a sort of temporary peace."
No exit for anathema.......2003-12-06
This is a more exprimental record from anathema than their earlyer records. A little more proggresiv elements in it. The songs are fuzzyer and not so clearsounded than on judgnent, less gotich than eternety and silent enigma. This is a new sound in anathemas groving and take you to another level in the music. The records theme is about a fake suicied. It is not so harmonic and mellow than judgment, it`s more rougher songs on this one, still there is deeper and quietnes almost reflection in some parties on this. It`s swinging between aggresion, sadness, melancolic feeling, reflection and hysteria. Maybe it`s because of the records theme the sound is more unclear and muddy. It took me a while to understand this record, when I have listen to it for a while it become more understanding and I become truly to the sound on this album. And for me it`s tell me that this is a good record, it have to grov inside you, then it become`s great. Deatails and harmonics that you don`t heared before will become there for you`re ears and the music becomes more hole and theigt. This is a powerfull record from anathema, lots of energy but have quetness and reflection inside of it self. If you like a theme records you`ve will like it. A bit like Pink Floyd The Wall in it`s composition. I recomend you this one. Great songs on this record is:Pressure,Looking inside out,Panic,A fine day to exit but if you want to understand this record you have to go deeper and listen to the whole album as one piece. Then it becomes great.Enjoy
No more doom metal.......2003-11-28
As I was reading a review for this cd in a magazine, the person who reviewed it called it; New Doom Cd by Liverpool's Anathema. I beg to differ because if he actually listened to the album, none out of the 9 songs on this masterpiece can even come close to be called "doom metal".
People have said that Anathema is trying to get picked up by Radiohead and Coldplay fans, but although i love both of those bands, I don't hear that much resemblence to them. I feel that Anathema is in their own league of music, a combination of atmospheric rock and alternative rock, with some of their earlier gothic sounds.
No, this cd wont be picked up on radio or MTV, but I do believe that you should pick this cd up. It is definitly worth the 5 star rating.
a masterpiece...a gift from God.......2003-10-30
I read a review in a magazine about Anathema, and it caught my attention because it mentioned how the were influenced by Radiohead, one of my favorite bands. I also like gothic stuff, and it mentioned how Anathema played gothic music. So I ordered the cd at a CD store, (because I live in a part of the world where you can only buy cds that are played on the radio)and as soon as Pressure came on, it drew me into its total beauty and I have not been able to leave.
Such songs like Barriers, Underworld, Release, Looking Outside Inside, Panic, Release, A Fine Day to Exit, A Temporary Peace, and Leave No Trace.... notice I mentioned ALL of the songs, are perfectly written. There is nothing more I can say about this cd except to buy it. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!
