4 out of 5 stars An expected release from Hell.......2005-11-28

This album is exactly what I expected from DJ Hell, bringing us more or less up to date on what is going on in the underground arena of the electro/techno scene, although personally I have a problem with the term 'electro' being used to describe this type of music (as is often the case these days), as 'electro,' in the true sense of the word, only contributes one element of a broad range of influences such as industrial, EBM, pop, rock etc. that can be seen in this style. Anyway, to the point, this album is pretty descent, with killer tracks by Tiefschwarz and Kiko & Stephane D among many others. The cover of Green Velvet's Lala Land by Play Paul is ok as well, if not a little cheesy. Still, there definitely seems to be a bit of an acid house revival going on judging by many of the tracks on this album, and he fuses them with some older tracks by artists such as Humanoid and FUSE. It's eclectic, interesting and dare I say cutting edge. Many people's comments that Hell refuses to be pigeon-holed ring true in regards to this album, but I have to admit that I just don't get where he's going sometimes with some of the stranger, 'punkier (?)' sorts of tracks by artists such as The Highway Stars and Marc Miroir. Ok, techno has its roots in a lot of industrial music and various obscure bands, but these two tracks in particular are just grating and obnoxious! Excuse me for my lack of understanding, but my ears are more geared towards electronic sounds and I can't interpret music such as this in the context of a DJ mix. Many others will probably enjoy these tracks, but I just don't see where he's going with this. Perhaps in two years it will click and I'll say 'oh, I get it now, Hell you're a genius,' but for the time being they just seem ridiculously out of place. Which brings me to another point - the order of a lot of the tracks seems a bit rough, especially considering that it is the DJ's role to connect and weave sounds seamlessly, taking the listener on a journey. Having said that, it's good to see that a DJ (although by no means the only one) is injecting a healthy dose of variety into the mix, and bringing it back to its roots, when music was not so viciously categorized as being 'house..techno..etc..etc..' *yawn* Overall, a good album with some great tracks. If it's a refreshing, original mix that you're after, look no further. Recommended.
