Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Totally Gnarly" or "Gag me with a Spoon"?.......2007-05-31

Some of the greatest moments of my life were in high school!! The mid 80's when I was carefree and lived life unfettered! No bills, no boss, no cares! Just me and my pastel suits and thin leather ties and full head of hair....(Man, I actually WORE those suits?!?!)
Fond nostalgia aside, the whole 'retro' thing is forcing the 80's upon us once again and you might as well admit that you were one of the characters from The Breakfast Club! (Mmmmmm....Ally Sheedy.)
Dropping these discs into my player and hitting shuffle just makes it all come flooding back!
But to tell a shameful truth? I really HAD to buy this set because of "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner and Garcia and "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts. I've never seen these songs anywhere else!
I'm not sure I even looked at the other songs before my credit card was being swiped by the good folks at Amazon!!
So, yeah, again, I bought on impulse but I damn sure don't regret it!! In fact, I'd suggest we embrace the "ME, ME, ME" decade just once more and "BUY, BUY, BUY" this set.
If you went to high school in the 80's like I did, simply put, this will bring back some great memories.
(Unless, of course, your high school years sucked. To which, I say, "That's too bad. I'm sorry for you.")
Either way, just admit that the 80's were a great time for music and pastel suits and thin leather ties.........(chicks dig the thin tie still, right? Right? Anybody? Can I get a witness?)
Where's Don Johnson when I need him?
Oh, here he is....Disc 6, Song 19!

4 out of 5 stars Time Warp.......2007-05-23

I guess only someone who was a teen or 20something could really appreciate
this set. The 80s were my high school and college years and I was
certainly guilty of listening to the radio .... This set is awesome and
is really made indispensable with the booklet. My only gripe lies with
the artists that were huge in the 80s, but evidently could not be licensed
for this set....Notably U2, REM, Hoodoo Gurus, Wall of Voodoo, etc

3 out of 5 stars Shut up!.......2007-03-04

Like, for sure, half of it is like totally major gross-out, but the other half is like bitchin! Just shut up already and buy it!

2 out of 5 stars missing tracks.......2007-02-26

lots of great 80's music available in these cds, but missing one of the greatest groups of the decade...Wham!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD Set!.......2007-01-18

I purchased this set for my 13 year old daughter. It seems the 80's are making a big comeback. She loves it! I love it, too!! It has all the most popular songs from the 80's plus a few you do not hear anywhere now. It's great! It brings back a lot of memories, GOOD TIMES!!

Motown did so many things well in the '60s and early '70s that this overview of the label's smashes (and some lesser-known classics) practically demands four CDs. It gets them, too, filling them with single mixes of more than 100 tracks. That the running order begins with Barrett Strong's statement of purpose "Money (That's What I Want)" and ends with Marvin Gaye's statement of concern "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" says a lot about how far the company moved in its golden decade--but no more so than what the same two cuts' differences in sound get across. The company was able to blend the smooth and the harsh in ways that few other pop entities have ever mastered, thereby getting over not only to the feet and the wallet, but to the heart. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars MONO-TOWN.......2007-02-25

HITSVILLE USA is a box set that's clearly marked as a SINGLES COLLECTION-- that means these 104 tracks are in the original monaural sound. If you're looking for stereo mixes, this isn't the collection for you. That issue aside, the only real criticism of the album is one of programming-- songs tend to be clustered by artist or group. Perhaps a more thorough shuffle was in order.

Each CD jewel case is fronted with a repro of a Gordy Co. label, including one of the very first MOTOWNs, which was pale pink in color. The accompanying 68-page long box book is quite comprehensive. Recording dates for all songs and chart positions are given. There's lots of great photos; artists and groups are given a few pages of bio each. This HITSVILLE USA four-CD box set is fairly extensive, and about all you'd ever need in a compilation of MOTOWN 45s.

5 out of 5 stars the sound of a young america.......2006-12-28

this was my true introduction to the music of motown and now i see why motown was great a lot of these song i frist heard by other artist but hearing the orginals has made appericate the motown sound so much more and i believe anyone who hears these songs will enjoy them for a lifetime and i know i am

4 out of 5 stars Longer Songs.......2006-12-09

The Songs on this are FANTASTIC! I Love Mono Recording. Everyone says that if it's stereo, it "sounds better". I think NOT! It Sounds alright. But, Hey, if you want longer mono versions of the music, without the unnecessary extensions, buy this. For example, Nowhere To Run on this box set-2:58.
Motown Box-Nowhere To Run-2:46-TWELVE SECONDS!There's A Big Difference there.
Also, With Dancing In The Street, my favorite part is on this, when Martha says "Yeah", at the end, on Motown Box, 4 seconds are 'remastered'. (frown)Therefore, it is'nt there. BUT, people, There are a few notable songs missing. Quicksand, By Martha & the Vandellas, Bye Bye Baby, By Mary Wells, Playboy, by the Marvelettes, When The Lovelight starts shining through His eyes, by the Supremes, Hitch Hike, By Marvin Gaye, and others, you know what I mean? So, overall, this is the better box to get.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Much All You Need.......2006-10-17

There are so many good songs here, you can't go wrong. Don't let the whole 'mono' thing scare you away, either. With a decent stereo, these sound just fine. Just turn up the bass a little and crank it loud. I like about 80% of the songs in this collection, and for the price you can't go wrong; Nice booklet w/ lots of cool pictures included. With this collection, you'd only need to buy a handful of other discs to complete your Motown collection...

5 out of 5 stars This is the Motown sound!.......2006-08-11

What is Motown all about? The answer lies within the music of this rather impressive line-up of songs on "Hitsville USA: The Motown Singles Collection 1959-1971." It's the story of how a gifted songwriter, Berry Gordy, Jr., makes his way on up the ladder of success spearheading one of if not the most successful
of all R&B-based record companies during the golden age of American popular music. Detroit, Michigan, known as the Motor City, gained yet another nickname: Hitsville USA. Everyone referred to it as Motown. In this collection, all of the well-known groups (The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Miracles, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jr. Walker & the All-Stars, The Jackson 5) are represented as well as the known solo artists (Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway). Included also are some wonderful one or two-shot wonders (Shorty Long, Brenda Holloway, Eddie Holland [of Motown's hit-making songwriting trio H-D-H], The Velvelettes, The Elgins, The Monitors, The Contours) and more. What's interesting about this set is that there are many of the well-known songs along with some songs that you probably just don't hear anymore or weren't that well-known. So you get your fair share of both like the Supremes' well-known "Baby Love" and Shorty Long's rare but wonderful "Function at the Junction." The downside of this set is nothing too alarming. Not all the artists' hit songs, big and small, are included and I think that's done so that other little-known-but-definitely-worth-discovering are given a chance at spin time, too; even some from the top artists, too. Think about it: if every single Motown record that made the charts was included, this collection would just balloon up, and there'd be no telling how far. So this is a very nice general overview of those first 12 and golden years of Motown. That's what this is all about: the general overview. Granted, if you want to investiagte further about a certain artist's music, there are numerous collections out there devoted just to them like the single "Ultimate Collection" CDs, or box collections of the artist. But, back to this one. Included within is a very nice 68-page booklet containing essays and phots of ALL the artists, plus musician credits, the track-by-track listing of the whole set, including original release date, label, and chart position.
In the middle of the book the different 45s are pictured all together on a two-page spread which was neat, and on the cover are the picture sleeves. It was an unusual move to put no artists and only songs on the back of the individual discs. The same goes for the back of the box. The paper inserts of the CD cases are record labels that have just the label name: Gordy, Soul, Motown, Tamla. Still, out of all the Motown best of various artists collections, this is the big one! It's great party music and dance music. People young and old will love this. The sound on here is terrific and powerful, but, yes, it is in mono. If you look in the back of the booklet, there is noted that the original single masters were used (the 45 RPM versions), so what does that tell you? Nevertheless, the sound is strong for 1992 remastering. Together, this set is living proof that Motown wasn't just a hit-making machine of a record-company, it was a feeling!

4 out of 5 stars "Smooth Jazz Volume 3" offers meetings of the mind.......2000-09-28

Here's a good idea for a compilation: take some of today's hottest smooth jazz artists and highlight their collaborations with each other. The end result works well, treating us to the steadily-grooved-but-silky smooth "Mind Games" from Bob James and Boney James, the lush ballad "Mimosa" from guitarists George Benson and Earl Klugh, and the bright midtempo exercise "Strength in You" from saxmen Kirk Whalum and Gerald Albright. There's plenty of vocals onhand too, as Michael Franks and Brenda Russell team up for the sultry "When I Give My Love to You," and Randy Crawford and Al Jarreau offer up the finest reading of "Your Precious Love" since Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Jarreau also joins saxophonist Boney James for the gorgeous ballad "I Still Dream," and the timeless Patti Austin/James Ingram chestnut "Baby Come to Me" gets dusted off as well.

Of course, some of the tracks don't fit the album's subtitle of "One on One": Randy Crawford teams up with both David Sanborn and Eric Clapton on one cut, and doesn't Fourplay plus Take 6 equal ten? Still, mathematical tecnicalities can't subtract from the appeal of Randy's "Knocking on Heaven's Door" or Fourplay's slowed-down-funk version of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground." In fact, all the adding you'll need here is thirteen tracks plus a stable of smooth jazz's finest equals over an hour of fine listening.

Atlantic Records has ridden musical trends since the late '40s; these seven CDs chronicle the first 28 years of the label's work in black pop, during which artists such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Otis Redding oversaw the creation and flowering of soul music. Also included are classic tracks by the Drifters, Wilson Pickett, Ruth Brown, the Coasters, Sam & Dave, and many others who walk through the dreams of R&B and rock & roll fans. --Rickey Wright

1 out of 5 stars Lost Opportunity.......2007-03-24

The problem with this collection is not the music selected - a look at the tracks will show that. However, the sound quality is abysmal. I owned many of these songs as 45s and the music would often jump right out of the speakers. This collection sounds dull and lifeless. Atlantic used the master tapes made for the vinyl version released in the 80s, with all the limiting and compression needed to squeeze the music onto an LP intact. The rhythmic, driving quality of the bass is bled away along with the highs. A complete disappointment. Demand a refund.

3 out of 5 stars Damaged Goods.......2007-03-15

Disappointed to find that a selection like this is sent in a damaged state with scratches and scuffs to the CD box when the outer cardboard box is in excellent condition.

5 out of 5 stars essential.......2007-03-10

any serious music fan should have this. a shocking amount of great, great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Une magnifique compilation.......2007-02-14

5 out of 5 stars The real R&B sound !.......2007-02-02

Very good CD's set. Buy a part of the R&B of the 20th century with these discs and get back in these fines years! I can listen to very famous tracks, and many more I have discovered with a lot of pleasure. This set is boxed like a LP set. It failed by contening only 8 dics ;-)

5 out of 5 stars "Baubles, Bangles And Beads".......2006-07-03

When I was in college, I was a huge fan of Eumir Deodato, a CTI Records star and an innovative pianist, guitarist and creative arranger/composer/conductor. I was simply impressed with his exceptional talent and versatility in creating marvelous music. I listened to a lot of his music, collected most of his LPs and especially loved his versions of "Rhapsody In Blue," "Moonlight Serenade," "Speak Low," "Adam's Hotel," "Love Island," "Tahiti Hut," "San Juan Sunset," "Take The A Train," "Do It Again" and some of the tracks in this CD particularly "Carly & Carole," "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and one of Claude Debussy's masterpieces, "Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Faun."

Recently, I have upgraded those LPs into CDs and started listening to them again and found out to my amazement that I still enjoy his music as much as I've enjoyed listening to them for the first time many moons ago.

"Prelude" starts off with his first hit, "Also Sprach Zarathustra," a tune from the film "2001: Space Odyssey" and an adaptation from Richard Strauss' famous classical composition. It landed on Number Two spot in the Billboard Top 100 and won the 1973 Grammy award for the Best Pop Instrumental Performance.

My personal favorites include his own composition "Carly & Carole," a tribute to two famous singers, Carly Simon and Carole King, and "Baubles, Bangles And Beads," an upbeat tune from the Broadway show "Kismet."

With Mr. Deodato's stellar performances and the outstanding back-up of his talented musicians, Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Stanley Clarke and Ray Barretto, among many others, this recording will never disappoint you. You'll enjoy it as much as I do.

Also, kindly check out some of his remarkable recordings: "Love Island," "Deodato 2" and "Preludes and Rhapsodies" for more great listens.

Very highly recommended for your listening pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Classic jazz-fusion with Cobham, Carter, Clarke, Airto.......2006-06-04

This is a 'classic' jazz-fusion album and is a must have for any serious listner of the genre. The first cut, a re-make of the theme for '2001 A Space Odyssey' stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it on the radio. It is still a very satisfying listen all these years later.

I have to comment though on the amount of music on the CD. 33 minutes was a bit skimpy for an LP and is downright wasteful for a CD! First of all, why not include the 3 minute "single" of Also Sprach that was released to radio stations and which made the song such a pop hit? Second, the liner lists other albums from the CTI catalog being re-released on CD. Why not include a song from each of those albums on this CD and provide the listner with a sampler? Or package this with another Deodato album and do a 2-fer.

5 out of 5 stars Great album, and a excellent take on Also Sprach Zarahustra.......2005-02-17

Probably one of my favorite albums on Creed Taylor's legendary CTI label (right up with the the live "California Concert" album, a standout showcase of the aritsts on CTI at the time), as well as Eumir Deodato being one of my favorite artists in jazz as well.

A bit of trivia: The track that's possibly the most famous on this album, "Also Sprach Zarahustra", was used in one of Peter Seller's last films, "Being There", during the scenes when Seller's character, Chance the Gardener (aka Chauncey Gardner), finally goes out into the world after being holed up at home all of his life, and explores the city. I thought it fit quite well with those scenes in the film.

Other tracks on this album that I enjoy would have to be Spirit of Summer, which, IMO, almost sounds like something Burt Bacharach would have wrote along with Deodato (Burt being a songwriter I admire highly), Afternoon of a Faun, Deodato's most involved work on this album, and September 13, which is just as funky as Zarahustra, as well has having a NFL Films music flavor to it (not that that's a bad thing) when the horns kick in. All in all, great songs, and a great album.

4 out of 5 stars Also sprach Deodato.......2004-05-14

Some magic from Brazilia. Deodato is an excellent arranger. I have nearly all his work on LP or CD. This is one of his best work. Also Sprach... and Baubles, bangles and beads are marvelous. Close your eyes, grab a liquer and up to Copacabana!

4 out of 5 stars essential 70's sound.......2004-03-19

The music reminds me of background soundtrack from our local 70s tv shows, never figured out who made it until i listened to this disc. im more into jazz-rock-fusion but this album didnt disappoint me. keep listening to it and youll keep on discovering new sounds. ESSENTIAL truly.

5 out of 5 stars Al Downing At Last............2007-05-01

This is the best I'll be holdin' on" by Al Downing yet :)

Now all I need to do is find some Dooley Silverspoon music anywhere!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2007-03-01

This is an excellent cd. The sound quality is amazing! All of the music has been digitally remastered. As any collector of disco 12" knows, finding the extended mixes originally sent to the discos is not easy, nor cheap! This collection brings together many of the outstanding remixes by Mr. Moulton. I would have liked a complete collection, but maybe they will realease more volumes. Andrea True Connection's "What's Your Name, What's Your Number" in its extended length would be heaven on earth!

4 out of 5 stars Very good compilation.......2007-01-07

If you are a Disco collector and also like rare soul 12" disco music, I strongly recommend this product. I bought because of Al Downing "I'll be holding on". I had it already, but I would like an extended version. Unfortunately, it is like "Rock the boat" by Hues Corporation, no extented version. However, you will find increadible rare tracks in extended versions like, Keep on Truckin (11:14), You've got the power (7:44), Moonboots (9:31) e much more.

5 out of 5 stars The Godather of Disco.......2006-04-28

If you happened to be a Disco Funk fiend during the 70's (like myself), just seeing the moniker "A Tom Moulton Mix" on a record label or LP cover would incite goose-bumps and trigger an uncontrollable urge to snatch up what ever record that the practically guaranteed stamp of quality appeared on.

To appreciate the level of involvement Tom Moulton has had with the over 4000 mixes he has executed, you must first understand that not all 'remixers' and 'remixes' are cut from the same cloth.

Over the last 30+ years since it was first employed as a marketing hook, the term 'remix' has changed meaning and context, no doubt through the creative contributions of at one time or another, A&R exec, label owner, producer, songwriter, remastering engineer, and remixer, Tom Moulton.

Most of what is currently considered a 'remix' is actually a 'reproduction' or 'additional production', (in most cases) stripping away almost all of the original elements of the song while adding one's own musical ideas to the mix (sometimes, actually for the better).

Mr. Moulton's legacy is unique in that a good number of his mixes were actually the first or only mixes released to the market (the first popular example being the huge '70s funk hit "Do It Anyway You Wanna" by soul combo People's Choice for Gamble & Huff's TSOP/ P.I.R. label).

This was not a remix done to accompany the original but THE mix that we all first heard when it was introduced to an extremely enthusiastic public during the summer of 1976.

Curiously, most did not know this was a remix since Moulton was never credited for the additional production that took it from being an almost forgettable album track and transforming it into what would become the biggest selling single for the label up to that date.

Most of Moulton's remixes, as proven with this collection, were comprised of just the original musical elements, tweeked with a louder EQ and extended in length to satiate a growing new market sparked by the Disco phenomenon and the club DJ's demand for more product, i.e. the 12" disco single. One could say without much argument that Moulton for the most part invented the disco single as well as the method of creating the content to fill those singles, i.e. the 'extended remix' or 'disco mix' which would fuel it's brief but globally influential commercial success.

In another example, one of the most famous and enduring remixes (MFSB's "Love Is The Message" included in this collection in it's finest re-mastering to date) Moulton was the first remixer to go in the studio to add additional music (most of which was recorded during the original sessions but never used in the final album mix), editing and extending the length of the song considerably, then, utilizing the same method for several other hit songs for the label coupiling them as a greatest hits package with a twist for the then already red hot Philadelphia International Records, created and helmed by R&B songwriting and production legends Gamble & Huff.

The results comprise what I believe is the first commercially released full length album containing remixes by a single producer, the must have "Philadelphia Classics" (ASIN: B000066C12) which ironically, Moulton was never prominently credited for. It's latest incarnation, recently remastered (to Moulton's distaste I might add) also includes the above mentioned "Do It Anyway You Wanna" remix.
At least he was finally credited for it.

Since Mr. Moulton was primarily a producer (see Grace Jones first 3 albums, People's Choice second and third LPs, First Choice, CJ & Co. and many others), his qualification as a 'remixer' was well earned.

Choosing favorites from this collection was a difficult task,
however for the sake of inspiring sales, undeniable highlights of "A Tom Moulton Mix" include the rolling funk of Eddie Kendrick's number one 70's classic "Keep On Trucking'" which has been fleshed out to over 11 minutes to reveal more of the brass and rhythmic interplay only hinted at in the original LP version, the latin schtick / romantic drama of Grace Jone's interpretation of the classic "La Vien Rose" (which Moulton also produced) and the ultimate Disco anthem and touchstone blueprint for what is now called 'house music', MFSB's essential classic "Love Is The Message" mentioned earlier here.

To coin a classic term, Mr. Moulton is a true 'record man' i.e. someone who seems to instinctively know that a song will or should be a hit because it's good, and not the reverse.

It's rare that someone who was critical to the commercial success of the Disco / Dance genre and as deserving of a showcase featuring their body of work (see Larry Levan's "West End Remixes" collection ASIN: B00005QFLA and "Salsoul Greatest Mixes Vol 2 ASIN: B0001ZW69M) gets the quality treatment that the reputable UK based Soul Jazz Records has bestowed upon this prolific producer.

I'm hoping this collection is just a first of a many volumed series that will be compiled by Mr. Moulton since arguably, there is more than enough material in his distinguished discography that could / should be reintroduced to a public with a growing thirst for quality dance music.

5 out of 5 stars This will change your mind about remixes!.......2006-04-23

I am generally not a huge fan of remixes. Generally, I find that if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Songs like "Keep On Truckin'" and "More, More, More" are already musical *masterpieces*, so why tinker with them? Would someone walk up to the Mona Lisa and change the color of her hair? When most people think of remixes, they think of the typical lazy club mix, with a song being layered with a bunch of incongruous beats, lasting for 12 minutes, repeating the same thing over and over. But not Tom Moulton. His approach to mixing songs is to understand WHY the original song was worth mixing again, pick out the elements of the song that make them so beloved by people, and to manipulate the song so that it is both familiar, retaining its original charm, but different, and worth listening to closely. His approach is very respectful of the originals, and I am actually preferring some of his mixes over the originals, which is really saying quite a lot!

This CD is pretty expensive (for a CD), but if you know and like any of the original songs on this compilation, I am sure that you will adore this. And even if you are totally unfamiliar with the songs on this album, you will undoubtedly find some gems on here that will makes buying this album a gamble that will pay off in spades.

4 out of 5 stars Strong indeed........2007-05-21

Miles Jaye's self-titled debut CD was a very strong set of '70s-flavored R&B with tracks like "Let's Start Love Over", "I Cry For You" and "Lazy Love" standing the test of time. Unfortunately, Island Records failed to promote him properly and Jaye's subsequent albums (1989's "Irresistible" and 1991's "Strong") went nowhere despite having strong material. If you like such great R&B singers as David Ruffin, Sam and Dave, Otis Redding and Teddy Pendergrass then buy this CD while it's still available.

I would like to know where Miles Jaye is and why he does not do more music because he has such a romantic and heart throbbing sound along with the sound of the cello. He should be continuing to woo us with his strong and sensual voice. He belongs up there with Barry White, Marvin Gaye, and Smokey Robinson.

4 out of 5 stars Helps you remember the decade you tried to forget.......2007-05-21

This CD has tracks I could not find any where else, not even Napster or Walmart Custom CDs. I played it on my summer break to the beach and it brought back memories. My kids even like the music. So, if you Wanna be a Cowboy, or you miss the Captain of your heart, listen up and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended! Great compilations of non-typical 80's hits!.......2005-11-30

The Living In Oblivion series of CD compilations does something that many similar compilations do NOT do: they give us some great variety of "hits".

There is no doubt that "Mickey" by Toni Basil was a huge hit. There's also no doubt that "Our Lips are Sealed" was a break out hit for the Go Go's, but the Funboy Three version wasn't. But what about "Living in a Box"? It only hit the Billboard top 100 at #89 in 1987. So why is it here? Why are a large number of these songs? They're not top 10 hits, right?

Wrong!

I'm sick to death of so many compilations relying on top 40 hits from the 80's. The U.S. music tastes are typically very different from those of Europe. Just because a song doesn't make the U.S. Billboard top 40 doesn't mean that it isn't a hit in other countries. And although I'm an American, my music tastes have always run more in line with those of Europe.

I'm delighted that the Living in Oblivion series (and the Pop and Wave series) have incorporated a variety of hits from the U.S. and Europe.

I also like that some of the more obscure groups and their songs are available on these compilations. There are several songs on these albums that never were released on CD (as they hadn't come into being at the time of the groups' albums initial releases), so albums such as these are the only place where you can find these hits. The Boys Don't Cry song "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" hit the Billboard charts at #12 in 1986, but the group disappeared soon thereafter. Then all of a sudden a dance version of that same song came out in the early 2000's and rocketed up the dance charts.

Don't be misled, the Living in Oblivion series is one of the absolutely best series for a variety of music from the 80's. If you want to hear run of the mill, top 40 only hits from the 80's, well, then you'll just have to look elsewhere.

Also, the liner notes and pictures of the groups included in the jewel box are really clever. You get to find out what the chart position was for the songs in the compilation and see what the groups looked like at the time of the song's release. My only issue with these liner notes is that the author of them seems to be disparaging the very music which these albums are espousing. Apparently many believe that the music from the 80's was vacuous and devoid of emotion. One need only listen to the song "The Promise" by the group "When in Rome" (Living in Oblivion Volume 5) to know that such a statement is false. While that group only had this one hit and then faded into obscurity, "The Promise" made the Billboard Top 100 at #11 and the Billboard Dance Chart at #1.

Anyway... I can't recommend this album and its entire series any more! It's simply awesome! Before believing those who would disparage this series of albums, please check the Billboard charts and you'll see that these songs were in fact hits.

GET IT!

4 out of 5 stars THIS AIN'T NO TIME-LIFE SERIES PEOPLE!.......2005-11-28

I own all 5 of the LIO series and must say that v.5 stands out as the issue that most personifies (what I believe) is the point of the series. Many of the songs in the series were songs I may have heard only once in the 80's (in clubs, on the radio, in movies). But were it not for the LIO series, many of the tunes would definitely be relegated to musical "oblivion". (Hint to the LIO naysayers: Just because you never heard it before, doesn't mean it isn't "GOOD"! If you want only what was in the TOP 40 in the '80's, try a TIME-LIFE series!)

Everything here shines in it's own '80's quirky sort of way. I left off 1 star only because the version of "Hyperactive" is an edited version and not the full version included on Thomas Dolby's "Retrospectacle" album.

Not everything in the LIO series is a hit, but it contains so many songs not found anywhere else that truly deserve a second listen and their own place outside of oblivion.

PS: I am told that v.5 is officially OUT OF PRINT.

4 out of 5 stars hit list.......2005-09-02

I used to earlier buy the NOW compilation series thinking the best songs were found in the NOW compilations but i now realise i wasted a lot of money on the now scrap only after coming across the Living In Oblivion series of 80s hits i had listened to volumes 1 and 2 and feel this is the type of music i always wanted

3 out of 5 stars The 80's greatest hits (and misses). .......2005-04-17

Truth be known, most of these songs were not big hits, and some I never even heard before. I mean where is Prince, Cyndi Lauper, and Huey Lewis on these 5 cd's? But I will say half of this collection is really strong, and the other half is at least decent. My personal favorites would be "Major Tom (coming home)", "Promises, Promises", "The Promise", and "I Wanna Be A Cowboy". Also good is "Pleasure And Pain", "The Honeythief", and "Enola Gay". However, the reason I bought this was for Doubles "Captain Of Her Heart", which I often heard as a kid, and haven't seen anywhere in years. This 5th volume in the series is roughly the same as the others, it's just a matter of what tracks you're really trying to hunt down.

Of course The Funk Box is kick-ass party music--put "Sex Machine," "Brick House," "One Nation Under a Groove" and "Hollywood Swinging" in the same set, and that pretty much goes without saying. But its chronological survey of funk's evolution through the '70s also frames the dialectical struggle between the music's two main schools--the James Brown style (hard, sharp, built around drum-and-guitar polyrhythms) and the P-Funk style (goofy, squishy, putting all its weight behind ultraheavy bass)--along with the way both schools dealt with the emergence of disco. The set also reveals how the party-time atmosphere of the earliest funk hits gradually evolved into the social consciousness of Cymande and the O'Jays, and then back to the hedonism of Fatback and Zapp. All the big funk stars are here, but the compilers have mercifully gone for as many lesser-known floor-fillers as warhorses: Rick James is represented by "You and I" instead of "Super Freak," George McCrae by "I Get Lifted" instead of "Rock Your Baby." The set also includes a lot of forgotten wonders and DJs' secrets--when's the last time you heard "The New Birth" or "Pleasure"? You can treat The Funk Box as an introduction to funk, as a textbook on how popular music reflects mass culture, or even as the source material for pretty much every hip-hop sample ever. Or you can just put it on and dance your brains away. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Funky Fun .......2007-01-05

This is what's missing from most of todays sterilized corporate driven music. Its fun. Its on the edge. Its raw. But its addictively fun. You can hear James Brown directing the band in the middle of the songs with his usuall flare. You can hear musicians trying different riffs. You can be sure most tracks were recorded with a full band playing at once, getting into and changing their own groove. You can't help but move to the great baseline and rythyms. Its got that special electricity that you just don't find in most modern music. Great Great collection.

5 out of 5 stars Funkin' Cool.......2004-11-19

This set is a must have for any fan of the most underappreciated genre of music around: funk. It is old school to the core, covering the evolution of the music we know and love. And for you new school, hip-hop kids: give a listen to this set and tell me you don't recognize the hook from just about every song in this set. That's right, most of the catchy baselines from hip-hop tunes have been hijacked from old school funk. If you don't believe me give it a listen...you will be amazed.

Either way...buy this set, it well worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars MAKE IT FUNKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-02-03

OH MY GOD! OOOHHH MMMMMYYYYY GAAAAAWWWWWDDDD! This set is so hip it hurts. It puts the fun in funky. It does it to death, and if it don't make you move, you're dead. The selections are right on and far out, brother, and the package and annotations are solid, Jackson! Just feel the velveteen and the rubber comb on the cover. This is the real deal, hipper than hip, the best mix of old school funk I have ever heard. Word!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding history of funk music.......2002-02-12

You guys I wonder why you didn't mention Cameo as a funk legend and one of funkiest song that ever made by themselves
Oh yeah here is an extended version of 'I just want to be' which was never released , I suppose, perhaps you can hear it on their 12'' collection. The latter sounds still amazing to me and I'd like to know how they made the unbelievable, thumping bass line which can make you deaf!and of course 'Shake Your Pants' and 'Rigor Mortis' also deserve a place on this great box set.

Moreover all the funk masters are here with us. From Rick James to Bros. Johnson this cd shows how to rock the house.

5 out of 5 stars They included Cymande - Showing some Knowledge.......2001-09-01

They included the track ''The message'' which was a hit for Cymande in 1973. This is a great box set for the intermediate Funk lover. It offers some stuff that is unkwown to the non- DJ public. And one of these bands is CYMANDE. However the FUNKiest of their catalog are not included here. On a newly released album Cymande ''The Soul of Rasta'' all of their funk driven tracks are included.

Featuring:
''Brother's on the Slide'', ''Bra'', ''FUG'', ''Genevieve'' and the mesmorizing ''DOVE'' which flows over 10 minutes. This is an essential CD for any fan of Funk and soul. These original funky rastafarian brothers all hailing from the West Indies created the most amazing and invigorating fusion of funk and african reggae ever heard. Most famously sampled by the Fugees, De La Soul ,EPMD and many others. Cymande is one of the most sampled bands in Hip Hop ever. However, no longer is this band hip hop's little secret. This album allows new listeners to hear the great original tracks in a re mastered format. Featuring ''Brother's on the Slide'' and ''Listen''. This is an anthology of their most memorable material from the original 3 LPs recorded the between 1972-1974 in London, UK. Its unfortunate that their amazing musicianship was too unique for the period. Yet today people are rediscovering and grooving to these hidden jewels. Dive in and feel the Funk! Also

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful but not "Ultimate" collection........2006-11-17

Brenda Russell is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter who has never received the mainstream recognition she deserves. This near-perfect anthology of her work spans her entire career but should have included her 1990 hit "Stop Running Away"--a great song in its own right. That aside, however, this is Ms. Russell's best comilation to date and offers an excellent overview of her work. If you like soul-stirring music that will nourish your heart, soul and spirit...this CD is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Fletcher's Picks.......2006-01-31

Brenda. I've always loved her music. If Luther covered it, it had to be a work of art.

2 out of 5 stars Wish I didn't........2004-12-24

I originally bought this album for Piano in the Dark & Get Here. But I truely wish that I hadn't. Apparently there is another artist that sings her songs better than she does. I think that woman's name is Oleta Adams... not sure. Either that or they just used all old tracks for this CD-- no upgrades. I have heard awesome versions of those 2 songs but those versions are not featured on this CD. I wish that the music samples were a little longer so that perhaps I would have known this sooner.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Ultimate, a little Incomplete!.......2001-08-13

If you are a great fan of Brenda Russell, then you will find this compilation noteworthy, but incomplete. The booklet with pictures is very informative and is an asset to the collection. The CD does have a very nice flow, which newcomers will enjoy getting to know. They will even recognize such songs as If Only For One Night (made famous by Luther Vandross), Get Here (made famous by Oleta Adams), and her own top 10 hit Piano In The Dark. All tracks were written by Brenda except for her smooth jazz hit with Michael Franks When I Give My Love To You. Rufus featuring Chaka Khan had a hit with Please Pardon Me (included her as a duet with her husband Brian) and Donna Summer had a hit with Dinner With Gershwin. She sings a funky tribute to Al Jarreau with Jarreau. Other great tracks are In The Thick Of It, Kiss Me In The Wind, Way Back When and her first chart hit So Good, So Right.

This collection includes a more cross section of material she has recorded over the years. Includes tracks from OOP LP's Word Called Love, Supersonic Lover, Love Life, Two Eyes and Soul Talkin'. Nothing from Paris Rain. It does not, however, include 3 important tracks. The singles Gravity & Stop Running Away and the B-side popular track Le Resteraunt (featuring David Sandborn).

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent way to do a compilation.......2001-08-02

What a cool compilation. I loved the way the some of the songs sequed together without a break. It felt like I was listening to the artist's latest album instead of a greatest hits collection. Great liner notes and song selection.
