Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description
High Contrast exploded onto the electronic music scene in 2002 with his debut "True Colors", named one of the top ten albums of the year by URB, BPM, XLR8R, Remix, Lotus, Mixer, Rinse, Knowledge (UK), and ATM (UK). Several British publications also cited it as one of the top 100 electronic albums of all time. Not bad for a 21-year old unknown from Wales. "High Society" does more than avoid the sophomore slump by setting a new benchmark of excellence for drum and bass and for electronic music at large. Four tracks feature some of the biggest vocal talents in UK hip-hop and r&b alongside the best crossover drum and bass tunes since Reprazent and Goldie.

Almost 5 stars.......2007-05-05
High Contrast's debut "True Colors" has shaken and revived the DnB-scene in a time when it was though to be dead. Beside Roni Size' "New Forms" it is my favorite DnB-album. I have to say that I am one of the few who think that "True Colors" is better than "High Society".
Don't get me wrong, High Society is an amazing album. It is highly inventive, bringing elements into DnB which have not been used in this genre before. Tracks are highly structured and some have a strange 80's new wave feel. Gone is the funk and the jazz which were so prevalent in True Colors, tracks have become even more melodic. If not for the fast beat, many of them are close to being mainstream compatible.
Not all songs are hits, and at some points the album bores me a little. Given the CD is over 70 minutes long, that is quite natural though. It does not change my mind: High Contrast is probably the best producer/DJ in the DNB-genre at the moment. Get this album, all his others, and also consider the other artists at Hospital records, most notably Nu:Tone and London Elektricity.
D & B on a higher level........2006-12-13
High Contrast has really put something special together here. High Society is the best D & B album I've heard since the mid 90's. 'Lovesick' is the first & quite possibly the best track. 'Brief Encounter', 'Racing Green', and 'Twilight's Last Gleaming' are my other favorites, but every track is worth a listen. Essential listening for bassheads.
I'm comin' around.......2005-07-05
Let me preface this review by saying that I've been down w/ Jungle/ D&B since day one. From old scool "Dread Bass" by Dead Dred (recently resurfaced on an Andy C. mix CD) to picking up Goldie's "Timeless" the 1st week of its release (94'), and all the Metalheadz releases soon thereafter (I could on and on--but I won't bore you). I didn't like High Contrast at first (see my review of "True Colours") and this 2 step Garage/D&B hybrid thing that was taking off (any lyrics other than rude boy ragga toasting made me cringe). But then, the more Jungle parties I went to, the less women I saw there. Now, being a heterosexual male, tis' not a good thing to go out on a Sat night and be surrounded by sausage. Anyway, I now see what these fellas like High Contrast are doing--making D&B more "danceable", which is vital, because that's what brings out the ladies (it's not only that, this really is beautiful music). Anyway, this is High Contrast's best release by far (much better than "True Colors", in my humble opinion). I would list some standouts, but this whole disc is full of them and definately worth a complete listen.
Pretty Damn Sweet.......2005-06-25
It's really hot that High Contrast wrote all these tracks
it's good to see an artist that truly swings across the board with consistent quality
all tracks jive
In general I find some of the typically ego-jungle rappers kind of dragging
although the melodic cruise of the rest of the cd is high society
thumbs up dudes
DnB---- BUY THIS
High Society indeed!.......2005-03-24
This album, as a whole, is excellent from start to finish, back to front, right to left, top to bottom...any way you play it! For drum and bass heads this is a no brainer and for everybody else this is an excellent album to start with. High Society is a beautiful album-well worth the money.

Album Description
High Contrast is one of the main players in the drum `n' bass scene today - reflected through his DJ sets, and the quality and originality of his productions. He entered the world of drum `n' bass without pretence or warning, lighting up the scene with his dazzling tunes and irrevocable changes in composition. His imaginative singles and remixes find comfortable homes in the record boxes of the scene's most notable DJs, and influence other DJs across the musical spectrum.
As a DJ, High Contrast mirrors his reflective production approach by finding the fine balance between the chaos of a heaving dancefloor and the serenity of at-home listening. His eclectic sets are a true antithesis to the criticism that drum `n' bass is jarring and redundant.
High Contrast's DJing style is especially highlighted on FabricLive 25 - a warm, glittery mix that provides a vivid snapshot of some of the genre's most exciting artists. It explores the wide varieties of DnB from the smooth, sunny "Restart" by DJ Marky, Bungle & DJ Roots to the turbulent, thunderous beats of Sparfunk & Joe Solo's "Rapture." The mix is pushed forward by classic rolling basslines from Blame, swept by stunning melodies on Klute's celestial "Hell Hath No Fury," and infused with Miami breaks and bass on "Ghetto Blaster." It ends with High Contrasts' own "Days Go By," a palpable wave of soul and emotion that brings the things to a delicate close as it slowly fades to black.

One of the Best.......2006-12-01
Phenomenal. Period. Mr Barrett has produced a classic. From track one to twenty, it never lets up or gives you a chance to ask why. One of my personal favorites was Life Rhythm by Logistics. It brings me back to better days for the scene. The records' mix is spot on. Jazz laden tracks in the beginning, female additions in the middle, and true bass rolling jungle at the end.
Snag it, an' dun ask why Boty Boi! BOOM!BOOM!BOOM!
Drum n Bass Blast.......2006-03-23
High Contrast is with out doubt one of the top drum n bass DJ/producers in the world. This mix for the fabriclive set is most definitely up to par. With a wide array of different styles of beats, Lincoln Barret takes you through the every expanding realm of Drum n Bass. Although the entire disc is good, the last 7 songs are outstanding. A good purchase for anyone interested in D n B
Drum N Bass is still alive!.......2006-02-18
This is a very strong cd. I kind of stopped listening to dnb in the last few years but have been surprised by High Contrast. He combines the energy of drumnbass with the soulfullness of jazz and grandness of a symphony. One can appreciate this cd because of the sheer diversity of tracks. Klute & Jenna G tracks are my favorites.
Solid mix - 3.5 stars.......2006-01-26
High Contrast is one of my favs, so when I see something from him, I get it, no questions asked. This mix doesn't dissapoint. At first you recognize a few tracks that you love immediately, and then others start to run through your head. Before you know it you're digging nearly the whole mix. There are some monotonous filler tracks, but the majority of this disc are new tracks by well-known d'n'b players, aka klute, cyantific, london elektricity. There's a great Jenna G track too, and there isn't a "feat. " in front of her name. At the end of the disc HC includes one of his own, a remix of Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen". I don't think the remix is quite as exciting as the original, and it kind of drones on in a trancy marathon pace. Regardless, I don't think you'll be let down ... this is another HC winnner.
The future of D'nB is here.......2006-01-18
This is an awesome album, I wasn't expecting this... It seems that the label Hospital Records has some of the most talented artists for drum and bass, i.e. Nu:tone, London Elektricity... all are very talented, but High contrast is by far my favorite... Buy it you won't regret it!

Great Jazzy-Rock .......2004-11-18
I have this CD and also have had a chance to see this band . I would like you all to know that they are still playing around WNY and in the Central park grill . They have added a simply great female Guitarest Who's name you should all know or will know shortly .Nori Bucci has joined them . She is the best musican in WNY and argueably also on the east coast Her pressence and sound make this Band simply great I cannot wait for a new CD with her addition to a truly great band .
Post-progressive, post-fusion at its best.......1999-01-14
Gamalon in 1991 was five very talented individuals borne of the prog-rock and jazz fusion age. "High Contrast" is post-progressive, post-fusion high energy music at its best. The songs are very listenable and the playing is unmatched. Gamalon cooks. The finest music to come out of Western New York.
Outstanding jazz-rock.......1998-08-04
I first saw this band live in the early 1980's at the small, smoke-filled Central Park Grill in Buffalo, New York. For a $1 cover, patrons could hear them improvise on selections from Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, Jan Hammer, and King Crimson until the wee hours of the morning. Eventually the band's efforts turned to original compositions, leading to their debut album "Gamalon" in 1987, demonstrating that they possessed excellent creative abilities to complement their superb musicianship. This record was followed by the even better "Aerial View" (on the MCA label, I think) also a jazz-rock instrumental work, in 1990. This disk emphasized the lightning-fast fingers of guitar master George Puleo and the smoother, jazzier contributions of guitarist Bruce Brucato. Although tight, intricate, and at times stunning, the record never gained the popular appeal that was expected. Word on the street was that it was too tough to sell an all-instrumental albu! m. Gamalon went back to their original label, Amherst, and released their third and last CD in 1991. "High Contrast" features a few vocal tracks adequately handled by bassist Tom Reinhart, more excellent guitar-based instrumentals, and a bit softer edge compared to "Aerial View". To the best of my knowledge, the band ceased to exist shortly thereafter.

Album Description
I've always enjoyed arranging songs for the guitar and interweaving them with classical pieces to give audiences a mix of old and new that has both contrast and continuity.
The exuberant good cheer of the Haydn minuet takes up the sad grace of the opening "Ashokan Farewell." The Bach is framed by two old ballads, the lovely "The Water Is Wide" and the modal minor "Black Is The Color." "Wave" and the Villa-Lobos show two different sides of Brazil, and the Latin-tinged "Maria" sets up the very Spanish "Capricho Arabe" which closes the set.
Enjoy the tour!
-John Lehmann-Haupt
Customer Reviews:
Songs of the Guitar.......2002-11-04
Songs of the Guitar by John Lehmann-Haupt accomplishes what many have aspired to but few have achieved. This offering by one of my very favorite New York guitarists melds many musical tastes coherently so that one hears nothing but the inherent beauty of the guitar, the greatness of this music and the genius behind the arranging and playing. Without a hint of pretence Mr. Lehmann-Haupt welcomes the opportunity to provide great arrangements of tunes by Bonfa, Jobim, Monk, Gershwin and Bernstein among others alongside traditional songs and traditional classical guitar repertoire by Haydn, Albeniz, Villa-Lobos and Tarrega. The CD opens with an arrangement of Ashokan Farewell from The Civil War that simply sings with the sincerity and masterful caring for each note that you will find throughout the rest of the program. You will discover in the second track of a Minuet and Trio by Haydn that John Lehmann-Haupt possesses a Segovia-like sensibility. It is likely this gives the rest of the CD such strength and depth across the genres. Obviously, John Lehmann-Haupt has the added advantage of experiencing jazz and popular music idiomatically and conveys this with great integrity. Really mastering the guitar acoustically gives his arrangements a true satisfaction. There are no gimmicks, only real solid music. In the famous Manha De Carnaval he executes a completely unaffected joy in a fantastic solo that has all the spontaneity and electricity of being improvised. In a club we would be cheering. Bravo John Lehmann-Haupt!
A Virtuoso Talent Merges Classical and Contemporary.......2002-08-05
The considerable gifts of John Lehmann-Haupt are showcased to marvelous effect on "Songs for the Guitar," a beautifully recorded CD that's both calming and enlivening. What's more, it's filled with selections that showcase the artist's unwaveringly good taste: With talent, intelligence, and insight to spare--and not a shred of kitsch, condescension, archness, or coyness--Lehmann-Haupt crosses seamlessly from classical to contemporary. Haydn gets lush, majestic treatment, Monk gets a soulful take, and traditional American folk tunes are played wistfully, thoughtfully, and liltingly. If you're looking for a gift for the listener you think has everything (or for a curmudgeonly friend who's just plain hard to shop for), I defy you to find a better choice. "Songs of the Guitar" has something for everyone, and you'll find yourself hearing old favorites in a new way. And after all, isn't that what art is all about?
Songs of the Guitar.......2002-06-21
I have been a fan of John's music for years. He has a unigue ability to blend contemporary and classical tonalities into rythmic structures that are smooth, engaging and witty. Although classicly trained he is never padantic or irrevrant. He clearly loves his instrument and the sound produced by it at the hands of artists the world over and from all times. John is also a musicologist and he combines his understanding of mucical forms, with an impecable technique, a subtle sense of rythm, a delicate yet distinct touch and the courage to blend the Motown and Villalobos.

Better and Better.......2004-10-21
I managed to hear about Fluorescein from this little song called "Kathy's On Crank" that was played on my local rock station. I picked up the album, and haven't been disappointed.
But NO ONE has heard of them!
They have a song on the Mad Love soundtrack, but other than that they have no exposure.
They are a great group, driving songs with a guy who can groan, scream, and growl his way through any song. The lyrics are engaging and interesting.
This album was a GREAT purchase. I have never regretted it. Dark dark music, but wonderful.
Addictive.......1999-07-24
Nobody has ever heard of Fluorescein, but they are such an awesome band! Their music is creepy and dark, with grinding guitars. If you are a fan of Orgy, I think you will dig this album. The lyrics are metaphorical and well-written, complimented by Greg Mora screaming them out at times. "Cathy's On Crank" is the best song on this album, in my opinion.
