Despite Paul Oakenfold's status as "the world's most successful DJ" (according to the Guinness Book of Records, no less), and producing bands like the Happy Mondays and U2, Bunkka is his first real stab at solo superstardom. Abandoning the podium trance with which he made his name, Bunkka sees Oakenfold marrying Hybrid-like breakbeats with rock, hip-hop, and progressive house--not to mention a healthy dose of pop. Add an impressive list of guest vocalists--Tricky, Nelly Furtado, Ice Cube, Perry Farrell, Hunter S Thompson(!)--and a slew of radio-friendly tunes, and it soon becomes clear that Oakey has gone straight for the populist jugular. Fair enough, but no amount of star turns, catchy choruses, and occasional flashes of brilliance can hide the fact that Bunkka is fundamentally a patchy album. It occasionally pushes the right buttons, but its blunt, schizophrenic nature risks compromising Oakenfold's appeal with his traditional fan base. --Matt Anniss

Love it - Hate it... It All Depends.......2007-04-06
Due to the amazing amount of controversy surrounding Oakenfold's break from conformity... This album deserves two viewpoints in its review.
People who will probably like this album:
1. Someone who has never truly enjoyed one of Paul's trance-mix cd's (Regardless of whether or not you've heard one)
2. Someone who enjoys the solo music of artists like Nelly Furtado, or any of the artists featured in the collaborative tracks (except Ice Cube)
3. Anyone who heard the singles "Hypnotised", "Starry-Eyed Surprise", or "Ready, Steady, Go" (you've probably heard the either of the latter two on MANY television commercials in the past few years)
Someone who will probably NOT enjoy this album:
1. Previous fans of Oakenfold's DJ work - Fans of trance, house, or breaks
2. Someone who has a tendency to steer away from the music of such artists as Nelly Furtado and the rest of the 'Brit-Pack'
3. Someone who heard those aforementioned singles and figured that those were just the radio-friendly few of the tracks...
In my opinion, those three songs were slightly annoying, but still somewhat listenable. The rest is just music that tries REALLY hard to be something it's not... My heart goes out to oakey, he really took a career hit from the inconsistency on this album. It just fell short.
Oblique and Very good!.......2007-03-19
Paul Oakenfold is a dynamite. Vey crafty with beats and - more importantly vocals. BUNKKA is a move to more dynamic move to commercial music. But don't blame him for it: More commercials make him hip. Paul's hip translation (and transformation) to star-status is obvious. Madonna's MAVERICK Records has pushed Oakenfold to absorb is talents and explore his beat wisdom. Quirky, yes, but brilliant, yes!
Ready Steady go!, Time of your Life, Zoo York (My favorite) Hold your Hand, Starry Eyed Surprise, and Get Em Up are sure fire winners. You owe it yourself to get with this!
Great CD!.......2007-03-06
I bought this CD as a gift for my husband (who is a techno/trance/house fan), and although I was completely unfamiliar with the artist, I've enjoyed the CD as much as he has!
Kidding, right?.......2006-09-24
This was a total disappointment, went to the used CD store within a month, blah.
A mixed bag - great!.......2006-08-15
Paul Oakenfold got his start as a record producer and DJ, but with this album he gained true worldwide attention. Heck, who didn't hear that great song "Starry-Eyed Surprise" booming out of their radio? Well, I loved that song, so I had to get hold of the album.
The album itself is a mixed bag of all sorts of different sounding tunes. There's the frenetic "Ready Steady Go", the soulful "Southern Sun", the languid "Zoo York", and a lot more. The only track that I cannot understand them adding was "Nixon's Spirit". I mean, who wants to dance to some guy's droning voice?
But, that said this is a great album, with a lot of really interesting tunes. I love this album, and highly recommend it!

Shifty, Tricky & Ice Cube... how can you go wrong.......2003-01-25
You haven't heard these tracks yet? Plop down da plastic and get this one. Crazytown's Shifty does vocals for Starry Eyed Surprise - which is just awesome. Furtado and Tricky? That was genuis - I wouldn't have paired the two. Techno Ice Cube is all good as far as I'm concerned.
