Customer Reviews:
Frequency modulation .......2005-11-09
I love this CD.
It's like a perfect little mix, circa 68-71, but in addition to music both popular ("I Got a Line on You," "Eight Miles High," "Alone Again Or") and more obscure ("The City," "Barabajagal"), it also contains resin-tinged commericals for jeans and waterbeds, news announcements, ads for concerts and commentary by uber-smooth L.A. DJ B. Mitchell Reed.
Basically, it's like listening to 73 minutes of California FM radio during its best period.
I got the other volume first, years ago, the one with Tom Donahue, and I liked it for the most part because I dug the concept and Donahue is endlessly amiable, but the tunes in that collection didn't fit together as seamlessly, and I knew almost all of them.
On this second volume, the raps are integrated more ironically and the song selection is just stronger and more unified in tone.
Makes me yearn for the pre-Clear Channel radio era, or at least for the left-of-the-dial college radio, both of which are now pretty much gone forever.
little slice o history; freeform underground radio.......2003-05-25
B Mitchell Reed was one of the founders of freeform rock and roll radio in the mid to late 60s. He, Tom Donahue, Dave Diamond, Uncle T., and others created a new medium, one which made the DJ more than a disc spinner. He became the radio listener's friend and advisor, and his choices of tunes(called a set) helped shape the evening. He would also hip you in to good concerts around town, happenings, etc. A typical set would run 3 to 6 tunes, sometimes with a common theme; Say, Casey Jones by the Dead, Traintime by Cream, and Train, Train by Blackfoot. The commercials are also very low-key and listener-friendly. This CD has excerpts from some shows from those times. it really does give you a feel of what radio was like in those days. BMR is so cool that Joni Mitchell wrote a song about him....
Is FM Radio Cool?.......2000-10-03
Since the advent of the F.M. rock radio format in the early 70's, A.M. radio has been relegated to the status of "uncool", which is more than unfair. A.M. radio lives on in the hearts of "real" radio fans, who listen to the likes of Art Bell and Jay Marvin(WLS Chicago). These guys are the true "rogues" of the airwaves, discussing relevant issues and stirring up the rebel in all of us. For me, the "real" underground radio is still found on A.M.
An Eclectic Gem!.......2000-06-01
This interesting compilation of favorite tracks played by the immortal DJ, B. Mitchel Reed, is a must for any lovers of free-form radio and obscure music tracks. While tracks by artists such as The Byrds and Steppenwolf are familiar classics now, the clear standouts are Jefferson Airplane's version of "Wooden Ships," and Brewer and Shipley's terrific cover of Jim Pepper's rockin' "Witchi-Tai-To." The late Mike Bloomfield's guitar mastery is evident on the Electric Flag's "Killing Floor," and Tina Turner manages to make "Honky Tonk Women" more interesting than the original. Perhaps what's best of all are BMR's signature voiceovers and commercials in between the tracks that really put this CD over the top. Highly recommended for all radio and music lovers!
FM Radio When It WAS Cool!.......2000-01-20
Think FM radio is cool now? Check out one of the founding fathers of FM Rock Radio. BMR rocks and so does the music. BMR is gone but through this CD he and the music live on
