Defiant, sexy, playful, nervy, womanly, and wise, 1988's Raw Like Sushi was the opening salvo in Neneh Cherry's brilliant, if woefully underappreciated, career. The hit "Buffalo Stance," with its reworking of Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals vibe, found Cherry erroneously labeled as a rap artist. True enough, there are hip-hop elements on Raw Like Sushi, as well as pop, electronic, R&B, and dance, all gleefully mixed up in a progressive melange of beats, cultures, emotions, and grooves. Besides being fierce, funky, and one of the best debuts in memory, Raw Like Sushi helped redefine what women could do in the rigid realm of late-'80s African American music, and it sounds as good today as it did the day it was released. --Amy Linden

2 out of 5 stars Nothing on Raw Like Sushi matches "Buffalo Stance".......2004-12-20

I just recently heard "Buffalo Stance" on my local college radio station, and it brought back memories of the first time I heard it in back in the winter of 1989. It isn't difficult to see why this song was so popular back then; it had all the infectious grooves an excellent pop song should have. But there's a problem with the overall album of Raw Like Sushi: all the songs that surround "Buffalo Stance" don't even come close to matching its catchiness. Even the inexplicably praised "Manchild" is dull.

Find the single for "Buffalo Stance" if you can, and pick up a Salt & Pepper album as an alternative to Raw Like Sushi.

3 out of 5 stars The original "spice girl"........2004-04-28

This debut of hers may not be as impressive now, but in 1988 it was ahead of its time, and great on many levels. "Raw Like Sushi" also covers as many genres as it does topics. I still have the cassingle of "Buffalo Stance", and that song remains the best thing on here. However "Manchild" and "Kisses On The Wind" are catchy too. In fact, the album starts out very strong, then becomes too similar in the second half. But overall it's a good listen from this "Inna City Momma".

5 out of 5 stars Setting the template for female Urban Rap-Commentary...........2003-11-03

Considered one of the finest female talents to emerge from the U.K (with as much social awareness as today's Ms Dynamite),Neneh was a urban role model of sorts, during the late 80's and her rhetoric was one of social Urban issues, which confronted both men & women by imploring, men to respect women & take responsibility for their sexual actions (and any offspring as a result of their sexual encounters), and for women, to recognise their importance within their community & not remain gullible personalities for men to take advantage of. A suitably tough stance of all issues granted a generation of disaffected listeners, (although the music was so dance orientated, that It was easy to forget the underlining message), and so having influenced many with her commendable insight, it fall's to Ms Dynamite to continue what Neneh first started.

5 out of 5 stars This is TERRIBLE... I'll be buying a copy immediately.......2003-10-31

Manchild alone is worth the price of the CD. Her music is absolutely awful and brings a tear of joy to my eye. Good luck

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums.......2003-06-13

RAW LIKE SUSHI is the early 1990's debut album of English singer/rapper Neneh Cherry (incidentally, Neneh is the step-daughter of Jazz artist Don Cherry, and the sister of Eagle-Eye Cherry who found success recently with the hit single "Save Tonight"). She was a mix between Queen Latifah and Madonna, and her hit single "Buffalo Stance" (a song about hussling) had become a major international radio hit. It was certainly ahead of its time because it incorporated what today is almost formula: a rap verse with a singing chorus. What is remarkable is that Neneh Cherry performed both functions. Most songs that follow this formula are collaborations, assigning one talent to each genre.

Buffalo Stance is without a doubt the best song on RAW LIKE SUSHI, but there are many other gems as well. Kisses on the Wind is a fun song about the girl in the neighborhood who matured faster than everyone else, "the first girl to turn the boys on." Inner City Momma, Love Ghetto, and Phoney Ladies, are also great songs.

This was an incredibly promising debut that seemed to hint at a future superstar. I'm not sure what went wrong. What has happened to Neneh Cherry? Why isn't she still on the radio? I don't know. But I *do* know that RAW LIKE SUSHI is a great CD that anyone who likes strong women will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars efficient!.......2006-11-06

I would just like to praise the efficiency of your service, especially on its delivery. Although there is a slight misconception on the actual delivery charges when the item gets to me. There are still local charges which I thought would have been included in the initial charges I paid for since I chose the courier and particular sending service. My suggestion is, if possible, to include all the charges in the order already so when the item gets to the recipient he or she wouldn't still have to add more money before getting the product.

    5 out of 5 stars a well-hidden gem.......2006-07-16

This album is simply beautiful. It occupies that grey area between ambient grooves and downtempo house, perfect for just about any night when you want to relax, but not to silence.

Much like the short and nearly poetic titles they bear, each track is simple but unique. The artists have cleverly stuck with a minimum of samples and patches, instead working with flow and measured groove to get back to the goal of something relaxing.

Now, this isn't what I'd play at a party - most of the tracks can easily get lost behind the slightest background noise. However, this is presently my favorite album for the single-digit hours with a very few friends or alone.

Also, if you've been to Japan, some of the samples and lyrics will make you feel nostalgic. The sounds of the eki and densya in several of the tracks makes me miss Tokyo every time I hear them.

One final caveat - this CD isn't very forgiving of poor-quality speakers or headphones that lack bottom-end. You won't enjoy this one bit on your earbuds, but it will make you happy you bought that nice stereo.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome.......2005-06-29

Multilayered grooves of the best ambient music I've heard.
Consciousness raising journeys of melody and rhythm that
satisfy from beginning to end. Everyone I've played it for loves it.
    Highly recommended.

This is a great album. Some of the songs on here are now my favorites. I personally enjoyed "You Are My Music" (Hi-Posi actually has an album released in the U.S now), "Yukarin Disco," and "Fantastic Cat."
It's in French, English, and Japanese; none of which you can understand.
I recommend this c.d. for anyone who is interested in new sounding music.

I adore Stereo Sushi... I have all the previous cds (except for vol. 8). I can't stress enough how different this one is to the ones before. It's a completely different genre of music! If you are thinking of buying this because you like the others, you will be highly disappointed. I can't believe they are even calling this 'Stereo Sushi'.

4 out of 5 stars YUKARI FRESH & TAKAKO MINEKAWA.......2002-10-30

it is not easy to find recordings by the wonderful YUKARI FRESH. once you hear her (music by MINIFLEX) you'll be hooked. also, takako minekawa is number 1, this is her stand out track (fantastic cat)from her MARCH records release produced by buffalo daughter! if you are curious about the REAL JPOP, this is it! these are REAL musicians, not figureheads and hired vocalists. but mini moni and puffy are cool too :)

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-04-12

This CD its so Cool!!! Its Great, only if you like Jappanese Lounge Music, if your friends are stupid dont play it to them, maybe they will call you sissy, any way its Great!!

2 out of 5 stars A pale follow up to Sushi 3003.......2001-11-06

Whereas the previous compilation in this series, Sushi 3003, explored unusual and melodic landscapes and was entirely wonderful, Sushi 4004 has it's feet mostly stuck on the dance floor and usually in a pretty dull way. Some of the tracks are plain boring (Midnight Bowlers - "Bowlers In Space" immediately springs to mind). Still it's not a total loss, The Fantastic Plastic Machine are there with a groovy number "S'il Vous Plait", Kahimi Karie gets a look in with "Alcohol" (a lenghty but stunning track from her incredible CD "L'Arme De Crocodile") and there's a High Llamas remix of Cornelius' "The Microdisneycal World Tour". Oh! Penelope strike gold with "Lait Au Miel" which sounds even more fab when placed against Takako Minekawa's bland "Fantastic Cat" (the comparisons to Kahimi Karie are undeserved). The Pizzicato Five donate a pretty uninteresting collage of a bunch of their songs entitled "Lesson 3003 (Part 1)". Much as I hate to dis a great label like Bungalow, all in all, this is not a patch on Sushi 3003. Sushi 5005 anyone?

        4 out of 5 stars Utterly charming.......2000-08-18

There's nothing to dislike about this CD. It won't change your life, but it will entertain and amuse you for an hour. J-Pop is the music of magpie minds (with a hefty nod towards the concept of 'swinging'), so it's sole function is entertainment rather than enlightenment. One quibble: the Cornelius track is a remix by Sean O' Hagan and says more about High Llamas than Cornelius. Two other points: 1) Cornelius must be seen live to be fully believed. 2) The Fantastic Plastic Machine track is so good I use it as the theme on the soccer radio show I do in the UK. Yes, that good.

4 out of 5 stars sharp, modern stuff -- and MUCH BETTER than sushi 3003.......2000-06-13

if you're getting into J-pop and are pondering purchase of sushi 3003 and 4004: sushi 4004 is better. sharper, cooler mixes... creative, retro feel... 3003 is pretty rough, but 4004 -- especially with a number of cool samba-beat tracks -- is DEFINITELY worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Essential latin and deep house..........2005-04-06

I love the Hed Kandi and Stereo Sushi comps...Perfect for having loads of new tracks to play with..this one is my favorite in the series so far...big numbers in my sets are Carla Alexander's "Volume", Botella Project's "Agora", and Praful's "Inspiracao"...many of the other tracks are very playable, and I highly recommend this one for any cdj in need of slamming latin / deep house...

3 out of 5 stars Latin Disco that offers a kick to the palette........2004-01-14

Here's the Hed Kandi recipe: Full-length, unmixed 12"singles collections, two dozen tunes over two discs, in equal parts big hits, nondescript pieces and fizzled duds.

Stereo Sushi 5 goes away from the series soulful house roots for a journey in warm Latin-disco. It's a welcome venture, especially for fans of their Beach House collections. A midtempo disc one highlights with the shuffling beats and piano composition of Vincent Kwok "Las Laves," and a shift from uptempo to hammock breeziness on the C&M Afterhours mix of Malena "Para Ti." Disc Two ramps up the energy with chugging Brazilla-vocal numbers and floor fillers, notably Jensen & Reynolds "Don't Cry' and Afro Medusa's "Dreams."

There's occasional dalliances with a too-big or simply gibberish vocal (Ivan Iacobucci "Pria Negra") but on the whole Wasabi offers the kick to the palette you'd hope for. Here's hoping the volume 6 keeps with the trend.
