Customer Reviews:
A Masterpiece.......2007-06-20
Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.
Clear and simple.......2006-08-04
Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones' Pay Attention is crippled by its 16-track length. Although the album clocks in at an average length of 51 minutes, clumps of filler tracks make the listening experience seem even longer. This is a shame because a few of the tracks show that the 'Tones are more than distilled-ska manufacturers. "The Skeleton Song" swoops down with driving horns and a well-placed xylophone, punching its introspective lyrics straight into that part of the brain that nets catchy songs; an anthemic bridge only furthers infernal internal "make it stop!" repetition. Also, "Riot on Broad Street" shows the Boston-based eight-piece adding some south-of-the-border spice to the mix. Alas, anonymous songs that sound like they were cribbed from the band's earlier releases dominate the affair, as do head-scratchingly banal lyrics such as "If you stay down too long, you can sometimes lose your grip." Indeed. --Jason Josephes
Customer Reviews:
Pay more attention!.......2005-07-12
My opinion of Pay Attention has changed over the years. I used to think it had too many songs, with ideas spread too thin. Now, I really admire Pay Attention for the same reason.
Although this is not a groundbreaking CD, it does have moments of diversity: there is Latin-influenced ska (She Just Happened), heavy ska (Let Me Be), a pop rewrite of Impression That I Get (So Sad To Say), frantic Mariachi-like intensity (Riot on Broad Street), moderate swing (Bad News and Bad Breaks) and a socially-aware nod to the Columbine shootings (High School Dance).
Simply put, you cannot go wrong with Pay Attention because there is much to indulge in. Since it was not ruined by radio, it has yet to grow stale on me. It honestly is one of their more strong and overall consistent albums.
Say What You Will...But This is Fantastic.......2005-04-21
So okay, this cd is a bit more mellow as far as the Bosstones type of music is concerned- but it doesn't mean it's bad! When I'm in a melancholy mood, I can continue my Mighty Mighty Bosstones playlist with this cd.
There are only a couple of bad songs...'High School Dance' is just okay and the songs 'All Things Considered', 'So Sad To Say' and 'Allow Them' seem to all sound around the same...but each one is still enjoyable. Besides those four songs (and please remember- they are STILL good songs), let's see what songs I can think of at the top of my head that are just fantastic: The Skeleton Song (absolutely amazing!), Temporary Trip (a fun, fast-paced song with a driving chorus), Bad News and Bad Breaks, Where You Come From, The Day He Didn't Die (this cd is worth it alone for THIS song), Finally, She Just Happened- this cd is wonderful. Sure, it may not be like any of the other bosstones's albums...but let me tell you- that doesn't mean it's not good. And 'good' is an understatement...this cd is amazing.
My Favorite CD Of All Time!.......2005-04-21
Wow! Lyrically this has to be one of the best CDs ever written. This album is full of morals about everyday life and it gives off a very positive message to the listener as well. I was going through some pretty tough times and I happened to stumble across this CD in my storage unit and figured that I haven't heard it in a while so why not. I took a long car ride and listened to the whole album all the way through and really learned a lot. I have to say, in all honesty, this album really gave me a whole different outlook on life and it really lifted my spirits.
Musically, this album is very upbeat, like everything else the Bosstones have ever done but at the same time it is probably the most mellow CD that they have ever put out. I feel that Dicky's voice was slighty over produced on this one, I prefer the harshness of his voice due to the fact that I usually listen to metal, hardcore, and screamo.
I also figured that once Nate Albert departed that it would be near impossible to find a guitarist that could even come close to his unique style and they did. Lawerence Katz is amazing, a very good addition to the band.
Overall, I think this is by far the best Bosstones album ever recorded and Dicky's song writing really shows how much he has matured by giving up the whole partying frat boy image. Good work guys!
Kris
Best Bosstones Ever.......2005-01-25
I don't have the slightest idea what the Amazon reviewer is talking about. To put it simply, if you're a Bosstones fan, or even just a fan of Ska, buy this album, you'll love it.
if you thought that Ska was what 'No Doubt' was, then yeah, you probably won't appreciate it, move on to the next trend...
The day they didnt die.......2004-03-01
The day he didnt die. This song is so good i would pay some one full price for this album if it was thee only song that played. Dont get me wrong, the other songs on this cd are good too. a must own cd

Customer Reviews:
Good Taste in Performance.......2000-04-29
Nancy Zeltsman's performance of the works on Woodcuts is exemplary. She demonstrates stunning musical playing and many of the pieces on the disc deserve such attention: Opening Day, Merlin, Woodcuts, Gypsy (arguably better than S. Vega's original) among others are fine pieces of music.
There are some less successful tracks though - the Tango Suite (over 3 tracks) is average and VERY long. There is a very broad range of material and as such won't please all tastes.
But this is still a beautiful album, cetainly worth owning if only for the wonderful sound that Nancy Z. produces.
The Queen of Marimba Reigns Supreme.......2000-02-08
NAncy Zeltsman deserves the title of Queen of Marimba. She pulls emotion from the instrument like water flowing through a stream. Her technique is amazing and her sound is sweet and gentle, but harsh when needed. This album is by far one of the best marimba albums ever recorded. Her arrangement of Susan Vega's Gypsy is worth the price of the CD alone. NO ONE SHOULD BE WITHOUT THIS RECORDING.

Music BECOMES Art.......2000-12-18
AZEEM has a fine fresh arty way with his creative use of words. The back-up music by Fanatik contiues to show a futurestic approach to his style of music. The music and rapping flow together as one fine piece of work. You'll love the great beats for dancing.

Customer Reviews:
This Ramen Guy is an Idiot.......2000-09-05
Contrary to what our friend Ramen thinks, this IS the best yet from the bosstones. It portrays the most talent, diversity, and emotion they've ever recorded. I'm a huge fan of old school bosstones, but the music contained in Pay Attention is by far the best yet. It parallels the style of Let's Face It, but adds some more jazz and latin influenced sounds. If you have any doubts about buying this CD, throw them away. It is one of my all time favorites.
Nothing new.......2000-07-11
With the exception of the song "so sad to say" (which is a real good song I must say) this CD brings back old material from the earlier years. Nothing spectacular here.

Customer Reviews:
Audrey, you are a dork.......2004-06-07
Not as poppy or catchy as their older stuff, but definitely better thought out. It's great that the band tried a few new things. A few tracks could have been b-sides. A slightly shorter tracklist would have made it an easier listen.
payin for attention.......2001-10-13
great cd, however compared to the earlier stuff it could be better, i love the bosstones. they need more publicity or possibly a tour with ltj. back in the day
What Can I Say?.......2000-08-11
Okay, these guys can NEVER EVER put out a bad record! I bought the normal US version, and then a friend of mine who lives in Australia mentioned that his cd had extra tracks on it! Well, I shelled out the extra bucks to get the two extra songs, but boy are they worth it! I love "Together" and "Just As Much"! They are true BossToneS songs worthy of repeated playing! I must listen to each of them at least 5 times a day! :) Then again, when you love the 'Tones as much as I do... Anyway, this import is worth the extra money! Mighty Mighty BossToneS rule!
