Bruce Hornsby fans have their reasons for feeling defensive these days: Despite the stylistic virtuosity and his former gig as a Dead sideman, as a piano-playing, adult-aimed popster he's in danger of being lumped in with Norah Jones and her drowsy disciples. Which may be why he brought out the heavy hitters for Halcyon Days, his ninth album and one of his best. First single "Gonna Be Some Changes Made" leads the charge on a return-to-roots odyssey that reflects both a grown-up acceptance of the way it is circa 2004 and a keep-it-real, no-caving-to-artifice spirit. Sting pitches in on vocals, his voice at times blending with Hornsby's to take on a regular-guy likeability absent in his recent work, and backing the two up on guitar is Eric Clapton, who picks up the at-ease vibe and veers it in a Hornsby-eque, no-showoffs direction. And that's just the leadoff track. Deeper in, Sir Elton John wades gently into "Dreamland," defying parents to find a cooler, more of-the-moment lullaby, and Clapton returns twice more for lead guitar duties, picking up a vocal credit on "Candy Mountain Run". Hornsby is cashing in on high-profile favors here, and they will likely serve him well in scoring new listeners. But the loyal would have been satisfied without them: Courtesy of Hornsby's characteristic wit on tracks like "What the Hell Happened" and an un-stingy share of two-handed solo piano noticeably absent on his prior album, their own halcyon days have returned. --Tammy La Gorce

Halcion Days Review.......2007-03-08

Bruce Hornsby is a legend. I was slightly disappointed though in the disk. Buying it after hearing a clip on the radio, I found some of the songs went on and on longer than I would have liked. The old time favorites with a current twist came across well. Overall, I wont be listening to this one as often as other recent purchases.

We all know of Bruce Hornsby, and this cd is great. I bought it for "Gonna be some changes made", which was the music for Lowes a year or two ago in their commercials, but the whole cd is great. Worth having. "Hooray for Tom" and "What the hell happened to me" are only two of the songs I wouldn't ever want to live without. Peace.

What a fabulous CD! There is a very diverse mix of music on the CD and each song is great in its own way. "Circus on the Moon" stands out to me as the best on the CD with the original Hornsby sound. "Gotta be Some Changes Made" is equally as good with a more orchestral sound than his earlier CDs. Mirror on the Wall" also is classic Hornsby. His piano playing keeps getting better and so does his song writing! What an outstanding release!

Underrated and Misunderstood.......2005-10-30

As at least one other reviewer noted, many of those who bash Hornsby over this latest effort seem to feel that he should be pigeon-holed into the same old 80s/90s ballads era that originally brought him fame. Though his early releases were excellent, as an artist he has continued to strive for other sounds, ideas, melodies, and arrangements. If you've ever heard the man in concert, you know he is most of all, a jazz pianist at heart. Jazz doesn't sit still; jazz doesn't continue to manufacture the same notes in the same ways; jazz doesn't look for the safe and secure. So, why should Bruce Hornsby?

Though I know I'm in the minority of BH fans, I found BIG SWING FACE to be a wonderful effort. There is hardly any "old" Bruce to be found anywhere on that CD--yet, it's brilliant in its conception, fusion of musical styles, and sheer energy. I was at odds with Bruce over that CD at first, but the more I listened, the more I saw his playfulness (he shows that a great deal in concerts, as well), his execution, his need to push the envelope.

HALCYON DAYS also requires a newer mindset than being stuck back in days of his power ballads. Sure, HOT HOUSE, HARBOR LIGHTS, and SPIRIT TRAIL are exceptional CDs (the latter is my all-time favorite for its scope and viruosity), but that doesn't mean Hornsby should be forever putting out similar CDs. He could do so to remain popular, I suppose, but I doubt that would fit his artistic urges. So, we get BIG SWING FACE and HALCYON DAYS--and both are great listens.

To be sure, HD does provide more of the signature two-handed solo work--for which Hornsby is known and loved by his fans--than his last couple of CDs. To those who believe he should go back to his old ways, it should be pointed out that, ironically, he actually reaches way back to his bluegrass and old time mountain music roots, especially in "Candy Mountain Run" and "Heir Gordon." Yet, you can still sense his restlessness, his desire to test his artistic boundaries. If anything, I felt his decision (if it was his decision) to include Sting and Elton John in duets a step backward. Though "Dreamland" is a wonderful lullaby, I found it very commercial, while "Halcyon Days" (the single) itself is a meandering paean to the overwrought ballads for which Sting has become so well known. Drop both songs and the CD would be stronger.

That being said, I'm not sure how anyone can listen to this CD and not be impressed by Hornsby's talent. You want clever lyrics? Got it. You want piano solos? Got it. You want some jazz-infused rock? Got it. You want some quiet, reflective pieces? Got them. You want some humor? Yep, got that, too. Is this Bruce Hornsby's best effort to date? Not in my very humble, no-musical-talent-in-this-body opinion. Is it reflective of a prodigious talent who loves to experiment musically and who deserves more acclaim than he gets? Absolutely.

As always Bruce has produced a great product but it is not his best. In my opinion Hot House is his best release yet.

Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Simply THE BEST.......2007-05-01

This is the best album i have owned, ever!These are some of the catchiest hooks I've heard since the glory days of Erasure.Every single song on here is a gem, beautiful, smooth pop, hot energetic dance, and lush ballads...yes ballads! Normally DETEST ballads, think they are sappy, not with BWO, they are truly lovely!This album is pure genius!

Halcyon Days by BWO is a fantastic cd - they are like Dream Academy on steroids plus Scissor Sisters transported to the 80's (as opposed to the 70 they are in) divided by Hedwig and the Angry Inch but no longer angry. Really BWO is great enough not to be compared to anyone, but sadly in the US they have not made much of a mark. If you enjoy brilliant pop songs then you need to buy this cd, it is really worth the price. If in the 80s you were drunk on Rick Astley/WHAM/Bananarama/Depeche Mode/Kylie Minogue etc. then this CD is the the jolt your aging psyche needs!

Camp done right.......2006-06-14

Ah yes, the missing link between Abba and Scissor Sisters. This stuff is so sugary-sweet it can give you cavities. That may not necessarily sound like a good thing, but these guys make cheesy, campy pop that is actually really good - and ridiculously catchy!

Contrary to what the other reviewer said, this album doesn't stray far from the first. The major difference is that it sounds more mature and the production quality has been improved upon. It's the same overall vibe as the first - but perfected. The songs here seem more complete and richer than on Prototype, and are simply better in my opinion. Most of the songs are still very euro-disco, but like the first album there are a few mid-tempo tracks along with a couple ballads. I happen to be a sucker for their ballads, corny as they are. "Will My Arms Be Strong Enough" and "We Could Be Heroes" are so over-the-top that I would be horribly embarrassed if someone heard me listening to them not knowing the context. They sound like they belong on one of those '80s love song compilations (which I happen to also be a sucker for). However, when you are aware that the band is fully aware and that these are tongue-in-cheek, they are actually really good, ultra-fun songs (that I can't NOT belt out in my car). In fact, they're probably my two favorites on the album.

Whereas the first album had a couple tracks that were almost too over-the-top even for me ("European Psycho" and "Gone"), Halcyon Days is great from beginning to end. My favorites are the opening disco monster "Chariots of Fire," the funky midtempo "Hanging On the Phone," the Moroccan-flavored "Marrakech," the relatively contemporary "Haunted," and the two ballads I already mentioned.

For some reason, though, they tack on four tracks from Prototype onto the end. Why? I don't know. It's annoying. Fortunately, they picked four really good songs.

So if you have a sweet tooth and have been waiting for Abba to be resurrected from the grave, this is the album for you. You may become as addicted as I have.

New style.......2006-05-16

Spring 2005, BWO released their debut album, Prototype. It really blew Sweden away, and it is still one of my favourite albums. When Halcyon Days was released, I sort of expected Prototype II, and was disappointed at first when the album didn't meet the expectations. They have changed, from disco-style to a more romantic one. I guess change was necessary, if the audience was not to be bored, but the change was pretty radical.

After the initial slight disappointment, I listened to the album a few times anyway. It really grows on you, the songs are really really good in their own right. In Sweden, they have played Temple of Love on the radio like crazy for two months now, you will either fall helplessly in love with it, or it will annoy the life out of you. The follow-up single, We Could Be Heroes, is a true chick-magnet. Any female teenager who has seen Martin Rolinski will melt when he sings "We could be lovers you and I" (sorry gals, he's taken). It also contains a cover of Obsession, the old Army of Lovers song. Then there are a few ballads, two songs with really nice rythm, and a couple of more typical up-tempo BWO songs.

What else is there to say? Sweet Marina seems to be more involved now. You get to see more of her in interviews now than last year when she left dealing with media to the guys. Alexander causes scandals frequently, and upholds his short-pants habit. Martin is more gorgeous than ever, and has become really good at dealing with media.

Halcyon Days IS good, but it is NOT like Prototype. Some say it's better, but I'm not sure I agree; they're too different to make valid comparisons.

Curiouser and curiouser.......2006-08-17

In 1981, I stumbled upon a tape that introduced me to a band that to this day sets a standard by which so many others are measured. The recording was the album, "Ghosts", and that album introduced me to Strawbs, a group that has produced an oeuvre of so much beautiful and haunting music and words over the years. I was priviledged to travel about various places around the world, and in time I was able to fing other recordings, on LP, of "A Collection of Curious Curios" (sp?), "The Witchwood", "Hero and Heroine", "Grave New World", and "Ghosts". It was only recently, when the Internet Age started, that I learned that this group was known and loved by many thousands like myself, who have come to admire them. Over the years, these albums have mysteriously disappeared, but in finding "Halcyon Days", I can bring them back into my living room, feeling just as wonderfully creepy as I did before. "Halcyon Days" is a superb collection of some of the best songs recorded by Strawbs, including some of my favorite tracks including "Grace Darling", "The Weary Song","Where is this Dream of Your Youth?" and so much more. For those who are interested in putting something new into their CD players, this is about as good as it gets. The fidelity of the recordings is very high, and the liner notes are a pleasure to read. For those who have known and loved this group, this collection will bring so much back. Buy it today, and sit back, close your eyes, and let the "Night Light" bring you back that place you loved and left so long ago....

This is the OUTSTANDING VERSION of this cd (german import) . If you are a Strawbs fan this is a must have , you will not be disappointed .Highly recomended

Awesome British Songwriting with Virtuoso Performances!.......2005-08-30

Where do you start on such an incredible collection of great songs by a horrendously underrated band of virtuoso musicians?
I had the benefit of seeing this band live for their "Ghosts" tour in New York and was totally spellbound. I have had all of the albums in their 12" versions and the remasters that were done by A&M were done with much love and care. There is something for everyone on this collection and one thing you will notice as you go from song to song is how this band could go from one style to another without losing a beat. I really cannot get into how anyone could find fault with this music, so if you read anything even partly negative completely disregard it.
The version I have of this disk was made in Germany and available at Tower records for $18.99 U.S. dollars which is an absolute bargain considering the song "Blue Angel" by Dave Cousins is easily worth that much alone. Disk one opens with "Ghosts" taken from the recording of the same name. My other favorites on this disk are: "Stormy Down","Benedictus", "Hero and Heroine", and "Round & Round",.
Outstanding cuts from cd two are: "Grace Darling","Blue Angel","Floating in the Wind",(a great song from a recording by Hudson/Ford), and of course their one big British smash "Part of the Union", and "Down By the Sea". If you like what you find here search out the cds. I would say that there are 4 that are absolutely essential:
1. Hero & Heroine
2. Ghosts
3. From the Witchwood
4. Bursting at the Seams

Buyers - be aware of differing versions!.......2004-05-20

For Strawbs fans, this is an excellent sampler of their early/middle periods on A&M.

However, you should be aware that if you buy this title through MusicExpress of Germany (as I did - way cheaper!), one of Amazon's 3rd-party vendor partners, you will probably receive the European (UK) version of Halcyon Days, which differs greatly from the advertised US version on Amazon.ca. I hasten to add that the service from MusicExpress was exemplary. Also, the UK version is terrific.

The UK version (clearly compiled for the Euro market) contains great liner notes and gems rarely heard in North America such as "Will Ye Go" (a revamped Celtic trad tune done in the pub-thumping style of "Part of the Union" (also included)-- "Will Ye Go" is easily the equal of the early Byrds' version of the same song, which thay called "Wild Mountain Thyme"), "Ciggy Barlust" (a kind of spoof of Bowie's Ziggy Stardust phase), a few really good non-Strawbs Hudson-Ford tunes, and about a dozen others (including B-sides) not on the US version. Although it does contain much of the same material, some key tracks from the US version are missing, e.g., "Autumn," Tears and Pavan," "Lemon Pie," "Glimpse of Heaven," "Heavy Disguise," "Hanging in the Gallery" and quite a few others.

Short of buying the individual A&M albums (which remain ludicrously expensive), "A Choice Selection of Strawbs" (also ludicrously expensive), in combination with the UK Halcyon Days, appears to be the best alternative, minimizing duplication and overall cost. Be aware, however, that "Choice" (which I haven't heard) has not been recently remastered and may not sound as good as Halcyon or the original albums, which have been. Oh, well..... perhaps A&M should consider a combo version triple set ("The Compleat Halcyon Days"?), combining all tracks from both versions.

In the meantime, Amazon should be more diligent in ensuring that their 3rd-party partners have the same version as advertised, or make it clear that differing versions exist (Amazon seemed to have no problem with the US vs. UK versions of the Stones' "Aftermath," "Between The Buttons," and "Out Of Our Heads," for example). I do realize how hard it must be to keep up with all the various differing versions of albums out there, but there's really no excuse.

Still, although I give "Halcyon Days (UK) 5 stars for content, subtract two stars for Amazon's ambiguous product information and/or faulty communication with their third-party vendors.

The Strawbs: Progressive Folk Rock at its Very Best.......2004-04-09

If I remember correctly they were originally the Strawberry Hill Boys before the group's name was shorted to the Strawbs. They also had a reputation as the hardest drinking group in rock, which does seem strange for a group that would best be described as British Progressive Folk Rock. These double disc collection covers the early and middle periods of the Strawbs when they recorded by A&M. This means that their best work is included on these discs.

Although this collection does include several tracks by Richard Hudson and John Ford, I have to profess that I have always preferred the work of Dave Lambert with the group a bit more, even though I readily admit that his work does mesh as well with the songs of Dave Cousins, who has always been the heart and the soul of the Strawbs. I also like the keyboard work of John Hawken over Blue Weaver. Even if neither of them is Rick Wakeman, the group certainly thrived without having a virtuoso on keyboards. Consequently, the second disc in this collection gets a lot more play than the first at my house, although "The Hangman and The Papist," "Benedictus" and "New World" certainly capture the variety and quality of the group during their first period.

Hudson and Ford contributed their best work right before leaving the group, writing "Lady Fuschia," "Part of the Union," and co-writing "Tears and Pavan" with Cousins on the 1973 "Bursting at the Seams" album. One special treat of this collection is that "The River" proceeds "Down By the Sea" (the opposite order of how they appear on the original album). When I saw the group in concert those were the two songs they played in their encore, using the former to set up what was then their signature piece in performance. It was that song, played by a DJ at a FM station in Albuquerque that persuaded me to go see the Strawbs in concert when I did not have any of their albums. Of course, that all changed the week after the show.

"Hero & Heroine," the 1973 concept album usually considered the group's best album, is well represented in this collection as is the 1974 "Ghosts." Each album began with a trio of songs combined into seamless set pieces, "Autumn" and "Ghosts" respectively. This was the most ambitious creative period for Cousins, who I always thought sounded like Cat Stevens with a more aggressive sense of soul. I also like the choices of Cousins' "Hanging In the Gallery" and Lambert's "The Promised Land" to end the collection. This seems quite appropriate to me.

It's okay.......2007-01-09

I really love digeridoo music, so I thought this would be a great addition to my collection. However, I find most of the songs to sound too similiar for me to distinguish one from the other. The only track on this album that I really like is #2. It seems awfully dark, almost scary and ritualistic sounding. The rhythm is unusual (in 5/4) so it intrigues me. Other than that, I fouind this purchase to be disappointing.

I love this CD. It's one of the best ambient recordings ever. The first time I heard it was in the car. When Calyx Revelation started, I had to pull over and just listen. It is awesome. If you have never heard Steve Roach's music before, this is a good one to start with. This is what he is all about. Not to take away from Newby and Kent, who also rise to the occasion.

Glurping magmaesque message from the underworld.......1998-11-23

Well...what can you say...Hassell has gone Miles meets Dub and someone had to carry the "Fourth World Torch" for us pan-global junkies. Steve Roach has mutated from a Schultz/T.Dream inspired cheese-wiz synthesis in the 80's (which sounded cool then - but the filter sound dates it) to developing an earthy, sub-earth timbre in the 90's. Add that to Lights In A Fat City / Trance Mission devotees Kent & Newby - and you have one of the most Swampy meets red dust recordings you can find. It is similar in nature to Roach's Artifacts and Origins works, and even slightly to Newby's "Ecology Of Souls" CD. In other words, Didgeridoo, swamp/earth keys, found sounds, REAL percussion, some cool fake percussion sounds, and conceptually going in the right place melodically/harmonically. Gila monster music.

Grainger's delicious folk-song arrangements deserve a place in every collection, being not only charming, but absolutely unique of their kind. Grainger treated these lovely melodies the way a scientist examines a prime specimen, breaking them down into their component parts, and arranging most of them many different times--each version orchestrated and harmonized differently so as to examine the melodic material from every conceivable angle. He was particularly fond of what he liked to call "tuneful percussion," a collection of mallet instruments and bells that adds touches of bright color to his beloved tunes. Fennell's Grainger & Coates.......2003-12-31

Famed American band conductor Frederick Fennell turned to British music in this highly enjoyable compilation of music by Percy Grainger and Eric Coates, who both lived during the first half of the twentieth century.

Grainger (1882-1961), who was actually born in Australia and later became an American citizen, authorized and approved the recordings of some of his more popular compositions and arrangements. Like Bela Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly, Grainger collected folk music and some of those pieces are represented on this CD. One of the most familiar tunes is "Irish Tune from County Derry," which is better known as the melody for "Danny Boy." It is given a particularly sensitive, lovely, and lyrical performance by the Eastman Rochester "Pops" Orchestra under Fennell.

The works are generally light and lively, expertly played by the musicians of the Eastman School of Music, where these recordings were made in 1959. The sound is typically top-notch, taken from the original triple track stereophonic tapes that were part of Mercury's "Living Presence" series.

Some of these pieces were originally written for piano. Grainger himself was a very capable pianist, as can be heard in some of the Columbia acoustical recordings he made in 1922. The orchestrations are generally rich and colorful.

"The Immovable Do" was inspired by a stuck note on a small organ. The "Do" is actually "doe," as in "do-re-mi." It is highly original and very charming.

All of the works have special, endearing qualities and are often very entertaining. In a way, this is classical music for people who say they don't like classical music; for those who do like classical music, this is a pleasant change-of-pace.

With the London "Pops" Orchestra, Fennell later recorded a three-movement suite by Eric Coates (1886-1957), who is best known for his light classical works, notably the "London Suite" and the "London Again Suite," works that Coates himself recorded for English Columbia (which usually utilized EMI engineers in London).

"The Three Elizabeths" pays tribute to three members of British royalty. "Halcyon Days" salutes Queen Elizabeth I; "Springtime in Angus" honors Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; and "Youth of Britain" honors Princess Elizabeth, who became Queen Elizabeth II. Typically, Coates music has great charm and memorable melodies. The performance here is quite delightful.

Shephard's Hey.......2000-04-11

I find this orchestra uncapable of meeting my standards with this piece. It should completely exhilarate and move you. This recording does neither.

Music from the Soil.......2000-03-29

Grainger was one of the group of British composers at the turn of the century who were fascinated by the oral tradition folk songs which were starting to disappear from the earth. Holst, Vaughan-Williams, Delius, Butterworth, all wrote distillations of this wonderful music. Grainger even recorded it. This recording does have a few oddities about it. Perhaps Fennell could be said to not have "been in touch with his feminine side", so slower, lyrical pieces may not his forte, but in some cases they can have a hypnotic quality. The County Derry certainly does have sentiment. His performances are marked with exhilarating virility, and he has a strong passion which maybe had a chance to show itself better with the wind ensemble recordings, but this one still has the Fennell energy and love. Also, he may have considered a symphony orchestra to be a wind ensemble surrounded by strings, but I forgive him it because he so lovingly "dished up"* a fine collection of Grainger for us, and anyway, Grainger may have shared the view as well. Grainger didn't give us a lot of time to see and feel the places and perceptions in any of his short pieces, but if you catch them, they are certainly there, and Fennell I think caught them and knew them as well. Molly on the Shore has these brief, mystical moments. Grainger is so worth pursuing, this recording is a must, and so are the other Fennell/Grainger recordings. I really don't think anyone has sensed the poignant beauties in Grainger's little jewels as well as Fennell. *Favorite Grainger phrase, e.g., "Molly on the Shore, Dished Up For Piano"

Good music but not top level perfromance.......1999-11-27

This CD holds some wonderful music (that of Percy Grainger) and I hold great respect for both Frederick Fennell and the University of Rochester. But there are a few flaws on this CD. First, the performing hall is about as dead as can be. There is are no acoustics that would normally add to such a performance. But that is a small detail. Second, one of my big complaints is Irish Tune from County Derry. The soft section featuring the high strings has sections that are played out of tune. And, in the background, a double bass can be heard tuning his strings or lightly playing for some reason I can't imagine. Third, I suppose my only other complaint would be that some of the performances seem rather flat. They just lack the emotion that these songs require. On the other hand, though, this CD holds some wonderful things. Country Gardens, Shepherd's Hey, Children's March, Mock Morris, and Handel in the Strand are all superbly done (aside from the small complaints made earlier). It boils down to this: If you really like Percy Grainger, then the CD is worth getting. If you dislike or only moderately enjoy Grainger's music, this CD is probably not worth getting.

Great composer, great conductor, great orchestra........1999-05-04

Children's March is fantastic, the clip doesn't do it justice. A great piece to listen to, especially with this fine orchestra and conductor, it's even more fun to play.

Distinctly British strains of prog- and folk-rock met in the Strawbs, hit makers in their day and too little-known now. Led by singer-guitarist Dave Cousins (the only continuous member of the group), they started out as kin to Fairport Convention, serving up quasi-mythic lyrics and lavish harmonies. During the 1969-1975 period covered in this two-disc anthology, though, they branched out into sprawling prog-rock fanciness (for a few pre-Yes years, Rick Wakeman was the group's keyboardist) and a sort of proletarian glam. The essence of the group's sound, though, was Cousins's proudly enunciated vocals and bold acoustic strum. Simply Great .......2007-04-14

I just can't say enough good things about this band and about this collection (the US version). I first became aware of Strawbs in the mid 70's when the "Ghosts" album came out. It's strange but in the middle of Nebraska, the song "Don't Try To Change Me" received alot of radio airplay and seemed to be their American breakout song even though it strangely is not on this collection. I then bought "Hero and Heroine" and loved "Round and Round" and thought "Out in the Cold" was one of the most intimate and sexual love songs I'd ever heard (how things have changed indeed!).

For some reason this band kind of disappeared after "Ghosts", although I bought the "Nomadness" and "Deep Cuts" LP's and liked them but not as much as "Ghosts" or "Hero and Heroine". With this collection it was great to hear their earlier songs that I had not heard before, especially "New World", "Down By the Sea" and "Lay Down". I sat in awe with mouth wide open when I heard "Down By The Sea". Difficult to believe that even though I had bought 4 of their vinyl albums back in the 70's, I had never heard this song before until about a month ago when I bought this collection. What a treat to have heard such an incredible song that I didn't even know it existed!

The remastering is exquisite, the selections are presented in chronological order, and they are listed in the booklet in a way I wish all collections would do (year, time, album each song was on). And Cousin's comments about some of the songs are great. The second CD rocks a little more than the first, which is softer folk rock, but everything is great.

This is glorious, well-crafted and INTERESTING music, similar to early Jethro Tull in my opinion. I love Cousin's distinctive high-pitched vocals and these guys made the best use of the mellotron of any band. They also on later songs had excellent electric guitar riffs, similar to The Who's "Pinball Wizard" or Tull's "Locomotive Breath" and that's what initially drew me to the band. But it's not really the kind of music I'd play loud with windows down while cruisin thru a 'Sonic' drive in. The vocals are too 'high British' for that. But for listening alone, it just doesn't get much better than this. Very highly recommended.

Halcyon Days, Indeed!.......2005-08-24

"Halcyon Days: The A&M Years" (US release) while not necessarily the definitive compilation of The Straws is certainly one of the best. Many of their more popular songs from the albums "Strawbs" to "Nomadness" are featured in this 2-CD album. Over 35 songs ar featured, including a few songs from Dave Cousins' "Two Weeks Last Summer".

The track selection is solid throughout. There are folk flavoured songs like "Witchwood", "The Battle" and "The Hangman & The Papist", rock ditties like "Round and Round" and "Lay Down", the psychedelic "Queen of Dreams", the spiritual "Benedictus" and the classically inflected "Tears & Pavan" and "Autumn".

Cousins' poetics and music is simply enthralling. The keyboard wizardry of Rick Wakeman is on show before he joined Yes. The grittier, harder sound of Ford and Hudson is also evident. Only the lovely voice of the late Sandy Denny is not heard here.

Indispensable to this album is a 24-page booklet. It provides an excellent overview of the group's history. Cousins sheds meaning on many of the songs he authored. And pictures of various members are interspersed throughout.

"Halcyon Days: The A&M Years" is an excellent album. Don't hesitate to buy it if you can find it, new or used.

All their own work, the very best of..........2001-07-12

My introduction to the Strawbs, in college in 1988, was the track "Deadly Nightshade" from their 1978 LP Deadlines. I was not impressed; but I decided that this was not representative of the band and vowed to seek out their other albums. It took me over ten years, but when I found Halcyon Days in a record store in Memphis, I knew I had to check it out. I was not disappointed. This collection was my introduction to the band's years on A&M, and the sheer range of the material is stunning, to say the least. Beginning with the folk-influenced tracks of their 1969 debut, through the "gothic" period delineated by Grave New World, Bursting at the Seams, Hero & Heroine and Ghosts, to the more freeform work of Nomadness, these 35 tracks show the band's development into a mature and respected prog-rock band. Dave Cousins' impassioned and dramatic lyrics are offset by John Ford and Richard Hudson's more whimsical sing-alongs ("Part of the Union," a real tubthumper) and the thoughtful, introspective works of Tony Hooper and Dave Lambert. There is not a dud on this collection. All of the A&M albums are available as imports, the first two from Si-Wan Records in Korea (though you must act quickly to get copies of them), with the exception of Nomadness, which has not yet been remastered, and may very well not be. Essential.

The best Progressive Folk Rock band in the world!.......2001-06-18

I couldn't imagine this collection being done any better (chronological, and no fade-outs to separate from other tracks of the original albums.) It's put together better than the UK version, however, the UK version has some rare b-sides and Hudson-Ford tracks. The individual albums are available on A&M in the UK. (Amazon will be happy to get them for you). I don't think A&M in america cares about the Strawbs. Or even Rick Wakeman (once a member of Strawbs). Everyone knows that Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson are the most famous keyboardists in the world. But A&M (in america), still hasn't released all of Wakeman's albums on CD. They've really dropped the ball. I guess we'll just have to get the imports of what is available on CD. Halcyon Days is the collection I loan out to friends. Even they ask me "Do you have anymore?" I have to burn copies and give it to them because the Strawbs are so scarce in the US. Some may buy the expensive imports, but they usually ask me to make them copies, because, now even "Halcyon Days" is hard to find. I guess, expecting A&M to release any Hudson-Ford CD's would be totally out of the question. Even the UK hasn't done this yet (as of 2005). Strawbs are to England, what the Grateful Dead was to America. (except Strawbs tell cool stories, not talk about the joys of drug abuse and self-anguish). People still follow Strawbs around England as they do still tour. And they are still releasing rather decent respectable albums (although I do wish they would stop doing re-recordings of their previously released songs. This is so unnecessary.) Oh well, Halcyon Days may be out of print, but a smaller collection from the "20th Century Masters" has released "The Millenium Collection" on the Strawbs as this is now all that america has got to offer. "Halycon Days" is a great tight collection. I recommend it, but Good Luck finding it now.

Difinitive Strawbs Collection.......2001-01-05

The Strawbs were not just a fine band - they were several! The earliest bluegrass-flavoured manifestation is not represented here, but the development from introspective acoustic balladeers, to purveyors of folky anthems, to epic prog-rockers, and almost back again via flirtations with the pop charts, are all here on this very satisfying collection. The distinguishing feature throughout each lineup is, of course, Dave Cousins' remarkable voice. Standouts include "The Man Who Called Himself Jesus" and "The Battle" from the first "real" Strawbs album (OK, the Sandy Denny one has its moments), the brilliant single "Lay Down", and longtime favourite "The Hangman and the Papist", but every track is worthwhile.

This is mellow electro-lounge music - with a jazzy feel and a little taste of the islands. This is sexy music - perfect for any bar, lounge, restaurant or hotel. The album is fantastic and Mikael is definitely an upcoming world-class producer. You will be hearing a lot more about him. Get your hands on this before your friends do.
