Four and a half stars, actually.......2005-10-05
I can't believe noone has reviewed this yet! After stumbling upon Minotaur Shock's most recent (and absolutely perfect) album Maritime, i was consumed by a ravenous urge for more stuff from the guy. This was his first full length album, and while it isn't as consistantly great as the aforementioned album, it certainly shouldn't be missed.
Range, Local Violin Shop, and Three Magpies are the standout tracks. There are no real duds, the album is fairly consistant overall, but these three tracks are so interesting that the album does seem a bit disjointed, especially with the three standouts playing back to back.
Range is a fun, subtly shifting track with a hypnotizing, brain-massaging ambiance.
Live drumming is used to particularly exciting effect on Local Violin Shop (probably the best track).
Three Magpies is a strange, darkly hip-hopish sort of ordeal, that could easily accompany vocals.
Good stuff overall, but only get it if you have listened to and enjoyed Maritime. I can't recommend that album enough.
