3 out of 5 stars Truly not his best effort.......2005-03-19

I am a huge fan of buckethead, I love everything the guy does regardless of how farfetch'd it is.But this cd was a real dissappointment. His guitar skills are hardly showcased on this release which is bad enough, but many tracks on this thing are just a bunch of dj noise. Even all the drum beats were sampled so Brain had little involvement with this album. This pretty much sounds like something he just threw together just for the hell of throwing something together, which is a shame because anyone who has heard buck play knows that he's capable of so much more.Only pick this up if you are a serious collector. I believe it is already out of print, but it is available on Buck's site.

4 out of 5 stars another solid bucky.......2004-07-23

1st off,tom morello "guitarist jello"has nothing on buckethead!he's pretty mediocre at most-definately not a ground breaker!jimi really wasn't much better than buck either.

5 out of 5 stars BH a black hole of creativity.......2004-05-20

Its seeming like most of the innovative , creative overall ability of the main stream music's source is being sucked into Bucketheads guitar .Kind of like a bermuda triangle .I find this cd and others of his to be refreshing and a bit refreshingly weird .Most bands are trying to hard to be known as the wierd or twisted band but its only obvious that they are trying to hard to be the best twisted folks on the scene with painted faces , screaming lyrics and instantly turns me off .When you listen to a BH cd you listen to genuinely creative and cool tunes with a techno vibe often . BH's tunes come out the speakers as being 100% genuine voyages into sonic exploration without the fake in your face , notice me crap bousted by the main stream .The no lyrics fact is also refreshing , just jamming guitar .I like his use of diminished scales for that eery vibe .

    4 out of 5 stars buckethead's cool.......2003-03-18

he's tight and all but he covers nothing that jimi hendrix and eddie hazel has'nt alreeady did.

5 out of 5 stars The wild and weird world of Buckethead.......2002-11-28

I'm not convinced that Buckethead is the new savior of music as some people seem to believe. He certainly makes good use of his guitar effects, but underneath the distortion I'm not sure he's doing anything that hasn't been done before. Sometimes, if you listen closely, he can even be a teensy bit sloppy. I certainly don't hear a ground-breaker like Vernon Reid or Tom Morello, but I will admit that I'm not a guitar player.

On the other hand, Buckethead clearly IS very, very good and this album is a WILD one. The simmering electronic landscape is rich with weird sounds, bubbling effects and hybrid hip-hop/alternative beats. Buckethead plays to the songs and is sometimes subtle, but when he does take a solo it's mind-blowing. I've never heard music quite like this!

Why would Buckethead waste time with buns 'n' hoses? Must've needed money.

    4 out of 5 stars One of Tomita's best.......2007-01-28

The second half drags a bit, and there's his impossibly cheezy homage to Close Encounters to deal with, but no other electronic music of this period sounded quite as overwhelming and lush. His high-tech take on Prokofiev is moving, and the album as a whole is cleverly sequenced to tell a somewhat goofy but occasionally quite eerie story of alien visitors. I'm amazed nobody ever produced a film - or at least an animated work - based on this disc.

I wish RCA would get around to releasing this on SACD or DVD-A. It was originally recorded for playback on 5(!) speakers - pyramid sound, with one speaker overhead - and would sound incredible as a multichannel disc today.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST SPACE ALBUMS EVER.......2005-10-18

If you are a fan of Tomita this may be his best work. For those of you that have never heard of him I feel sorry for you. He was a one man orchestra. He remade older and newer classical pieces with keyboards and synthesizers.
Sadly this CD is very pricey do to the fact that IT is a very hard to find import. For some reason they never released it and half of his other albums in the USA, on CD. I wish I knew why. Lost classics. Get them all anyway you can find them.
He paints soundscapes unlike anything you have ever heard. IT is a journey into other worlds. Turn of the lights and let it take you.

1 out of 5 stars For synth addicts only.......2005-06-13

Unless you are a hardcore synthesizer addict, steer clear of this overly processed and soulless album. Tomita is capable of much better, as evidenced in his brilliant adaptation of "Pictures at an Exhibition." This is nothing more than bland background music, or the soundtrack to a really cheesy sci-fi movie. The only redeeming track in the bunch is "Space Children...," which manages to capture some of the spirit of fun and adventure present in Tomita's earlier works.

5 out of 5 stars 'Connections 2' finds bond in our shared community By Karl Byrn .......2005-06-25

Charlie Musselwhite, David Grisman, Tom Waits, Camper Van Beethoven, Alex de Grassi--this list sounds like a set of artists found in a random search for "adult alternative" favorites, right?

Actually, these stellar acts all have very cool tracks on Connections 2, a new compilation of 22 Northern California musicians that's not only a benefit for local public radio station KRCB 90.9-FM, but is also a rich and compelling slice of our best local music.

"It became my mix tape, like the dude in High Fidelity," says producer and KRCB program host Doug Jayne, who co-owns Santa Rosa's Last Record Store, plays in two local bands and runs the Route 44 recording studio where much of the disc was recorded and mastered. "The CD sounds more like my radio program [Connections on Wednesdays at 8pm] than a CD. The songs on this album all breathe. I think the CD sounds like Northern California in 2004, and is a good document of a year we won't soon forget."

Like Jayne's 1996 Connections KRCB benefit disc, Connections 2 represents the authentic character of Sonoma County and North Bay music. Rather than being a hotbed of cutting edge rock, jazz or hip-hop, our region has a distinct strength as a blender of American and international folk, rhythm and roots traditions. The disc is sequenced to highlight this hybrid diversity, alternating styles but repeating the connections. From the opening wail of Musselwhite's blues harmonica solo "Durant Street" to Jayne's own final reflective folk cut "Not Dead Yet," Connections 2 finds bonds in the depth of our shared musical community.

Waits' previously unreleased "Buzz Fledderjohn" shares an eerie delta blues landscape with the Mali-meets-Leadbelly moan of Markus James' "Midnight." Grisman's semiclassical mandolin and violin duet "Desert Dawg" is linked with the European cafe music of the Hot Frittatas. The nu-Celtic romp of Greenhouse complements the pure bluegrass swing of Modern Hicks. Solid Air has a could-be country radio hit with "Local Color," a contemporary female-led sound echoed in Audrey Auld's more rock-leaning "Losing Faith." The acoustic guitar reading of the blues standard "St. James Infirmary" by de Grassi is glistening, as is the pedal-steel instrumental "The Courtship" by local master Bobby Lee.

Connecting the dots wasn't too difficult for the producer. With his track record and KRCB's growth in the last decade, Jayne had plenty of volunteers. "When I produced Connections in 1996, I was new to the station. I wanted to show that I was committed to the cause. The CD was like a promise ring: 'I will be true to you, old 90.9-FM.' This time, instead of groveling for songs, or having to explain my motivations or what KRCB is about, people were lining up wanting to contribute. I was able to personally pick the songs by the artists. It makes the producer's job so much easier knowing the pieces will fit in the frame of a compilation."

Jayne gives the credit to community spirit. "Folks around here know how important public radio is," he notes, because "KRCB is a great station. Even though it is an NPR affiliate, it is very independent." KRCB members who had pledged during the station's fall membership drive were invited to a Nov. 12 concert at New College of California that featured almost half of the disc's 22 acts. The response? "Sardine city!" says Jayne of the standing-room-only crowd.

With such a terrific turnout by both top-name national acts and local musicians who are ready to be top name, Connections 2 is full of reference points that will strike local music fans for any number of personal reasons. My favorites are songwriter Greg Abel's "Last Call Dance Hall," a waltz-time honky-tonk ballad written from the point of view of the bar itself; Holly Near's anti-Republican gospel romp "Fired Up!"; and Camper Van Beethoven's live-in-the-studio acoustic take on their alt-rock classic "Take the Skinheads Bowling."

Jayne's closing cut "Not Dead Yet" is personal as well, part of his link to this greater community. "I wrote it as a response to the deaths of Warren Zevon and Johnny Cash. I thought it was OK when I wrote it, but after listening to it, I felt depressed. I laughed, I got depressed again. Then I was hopeful. Four feelings in four minutes; I knew I had to share it."

With Connections 2, Jayne helps the local music scene share its best

5 out of 5 stars 24-bit CD Audio Recording of Tomita's "The Bermuda Triangle".......2007-01-18

I used to own a copy of this fantastic recording on one of the 12" Bermuda Coral (pink) vinyl pressings made by RCA Red Seal here in the USA. That recording was destroyed in a basement flood, along with several hundred dollars' worth of other, rare 12" vinyl records.

I am pleased to own a copy of this on CD now. This was definitely worth the $41 I paid for it. To keep a good copy of this, I not only ripped the recordings to my computer, but I also burned an exact copy of this CD to a CD-R AND burned the data along with all my other Tomita recordings to a separate data disk. I listen to the burned copy I made when I take my portable CD player to work with me. The original does not leave the house.

This was one of my favorite recordings when I was a boy. I could tell you exactly where each of the skips and jumps were on the original vinyl. Of course, these are absent on the CD, and I am grateful for that.

What is disturbing about this recording is that Mr. Tomita originally recorded this in five audio channels, arranged two channels at front, two channels at rear, and the center channel suspended overhead, to give an "audio pyramid" effect. Why BMG-Japan has not released this recording in DVD-Audio 5.1 channel to produce this effect astonishes me, and the only reason I can figure is that Tomita is neither a "top-10" artist, nor one from whose recordings rap bangers can extract a rhythm for their recordings.

This is music designed for listening, period. It is a concert of music geared around a science-fiction theme, designed to tell a science-fiction story in sound. You sit and play the CD and listen, and enjoy every nuance and orchestration and re-orchestration of this pioneering recording from 1979. Why Tomita is not much more popular as a result is confusing, for he actually produces real music from an instrument designed for real music production instead of extraction of whoops and blips and boops and bangs so prevalent in "techno-pop," "acid house," "rap/hip-hop," and "trance" recordings, which are hardly music at all.

If you are considering purchasing this CD, by all means, GET IT. Sit back, relax, and enjoy real music performed by a real musician whose time for real appreciation has come.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest audio experiences EVER.......2006-10-11

This is an amazing musical journey. Plug in the head phones, sit back and experience this incredible masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Simply one of his finest.......2006-04-18

The Bermuda Triangle proved that Tomita still was capable of making great electronic versions of classical music even in 1979. Here in the United States, RCA's classical division, Red Seal had the LP pressed on colored vinyl, that is pink, blue, or standard black. I happen to own the blue vinyl pressing, which I think really compliments the predominately blue cover artwork. Here, he continues on the space theme of his previous two albums, Kosmos and The Planets, this time mainly focusing on Prokofiev, although some Sibelius and even John Williams are featured here. Somewhere you get treated with this strange sound that's supposed to give you a message if you use some system called TARBEL (this sounds oddly a whole lot like the cassette storage system of the TI-99/4A home computer). The spacy feel is totally intact throughout this album, and there are some experimental passages that go in between the pieces. And you also get treated with his version of the theme of Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, keeping with the space/UFO theme of the album. The cover depicted a theory as to what happened in the Bermuda Triangle, with all those airplanes and ships disappearing (including the fighter planes that disappered off Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in December 1945, the album depicts one of the pilots in love with an alien mermaid). Musically, this is truly Tomita at the top of his game, and certainly one of the greats of electronic music. A must have album!

5 out of 5 stars Experience the genius of Isao Tomita.......2005-07-31

If there are any technical issues, consider that this work weas created in the 1970's. Isao Tomita uses synthesized electronic 'music' to tell the story of the first open encounter
        between humans and peaceful aliens.
        There are no words.
        There are no pictures.
There is only the 'canvas' of sound that Tomita uses to tell the story. He weaves the elements of the story together cleanly, creating audio imagery that is simultaneously awe-inspiring and human, minutely detailed and cosmic, all at once.
There is only one 'piece' you might recognize on this disc,
John Williams' CE3K theme. Tomita treats it respectfully, but he also makes it his own with many unique thematic touches, moving his leitmotifs delicately into the theme.
This is a work that is very difficult to describe, other than to state simply that it is a truly mind-expanding work. If there is a 'limitation' to this work, it is that it requires an audience with brains and an attention span. There are no three minute 'singles' on it. This is not designed for radio airplay. If Tomita has a flaw, it may be that he is simply too
        deep to be commercial.
Do not expect to hear this on America's Top 40.
Do not expect to hear the latest 'new sensation'to do a 'cover version' of "The Bermuda Triangle."
There are no catchy melodies to hum or sing along in the shower.
        It will never be muzak.
        Thank god for small favors.

        On the down side:
Do not expect to get it while driving to McDonalds. You will not get it unless you can PAY ATTENTION. This is ART, not wallpaper.
SO, if you truly want to experience something that will thrill and amaze you, yet leave you completely unable to explain it other that saying 'oh wow,' get this CD.
        Turn off the phone.
        Lock the door.
        Turn off the lights.
Disconnect everything for an hour or so, then plug in and expand your horizons.
This is something truly unique. Do not deny yourself this experience.
