Product Description
Reissued 1996 compilation. Stretch was one of the most popular bands of the mid 70's. 'Why Did You Do It', s 16 hit in the UK in 1975 and a popular disco favorite, represented only one facet of the Stretch sound. Rock 'N' Roll and down home blues 'n' boogie, played with a driving passion, were at the heart of their richly satisfying music. Elmer Gantry's soundful vocals complemented the attacking guitar of Grahem 'Kirby' Gregory on a 2CD set.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars blistering British r 'n' b.......2000-04-28

Stretch led by vocalist Elmer Gantry and guitarist Kirby recorded some wonderful, blistering rhythm and blues during the mid 1970s. Arisng out of the ashes of Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera, Stretch began life as the "bogus" Fleetwood Mac in 1973 and were tainted by the resulting scandal. Kirby supplied the fuel for such blazing recordings as "Show Biz Blues" (a Peter Green tour de force), "Living on the Highway" and "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo." This double cd set spans the groups entire career including an album recorded after Elmer departed the band, the same unfortunate choice he had made with the Velvet Opera some years earlier. The post Elmer Stretch had plenty of punch but lacked the powerful vocals supplied by Gantry and soon disappeared from the music scene, the result in no small part of drug habits acquired by both Gantry and Kirby. Repertoire has done a wonderful job of compiling tracks from all the groups albums as well as 4 previously released live BBC recordings, and a pair of songs recorded by Gantry and Kirby as Legs. Nearly 2 and a half hours of blazing rock and roll and a 44 page booklet await record buyers. Produced by Clifford Adams, who cowrote many tunes with Peter Green, "The Story of Elmer Gantry" will be a pleasant surprise for those not familiar with Velvet Opera or Stretch and is absolutely essential for those who are. Kirby's run through of "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" is worth the price of admission by itself, as he plays both Johnny Winter and Rick Derringer's guitar parts himself.

4 out of 5 stars Ballsy boogie by band cursed by bad fortune.......1999-08-22

Stretch was a mid-70's heavy boogie outfit remembered mostly for including members who wound up in the much vilified bogus Fleetwood Mac that toured the US in 1973 before being exposed as charlatans. This is a shame because the reputation got Stretch effectively shunned in America. This box set is an omnibus culled from Stretch's four UK releases. It kicks off with the band's only European hit, "Why Did You Do It," a funky musical retelling of the bogus-Mac debacle from their side.

From there, the set gets down to business of presenting progressively heavier blues rock and boogie led by singer "Elmer Gantry" and guitarist "Kirby." The first nine selections from CD2 are 40-minutes of stoked Marshall stack mayhem punctuated by a version of "Rock 'N' Roll Hootchie Koo" that burns Johnny Winter And's version of the same. "Tommorrow's Another Day," from Stretch's first LP, "Elastique," also joins the ranks of shoulda-been-a-contendah among unheard rock anthems. Stretch is the living example of the dictum "protect your reputation at all costs or it will haunt you later." Too bad about that Fleetwood Mac business. You shoulda bailed after the first arena date, guys. The Box set comes with a 50-page booklet describing the sad but interestingly pathetic story of the band as seen through the eyes of "Elmer Gantry," it's fiery blues shouter. The music indicates Stretch must have been an awesomely powerful live act. Definitely something for aficianados of lost-in-the-70's brutish hard rock.
