Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Great game - great music.......2007-01-10

My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!

3 out of 5 stars Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06

THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.

5 out of 5 stars best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03

i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10

The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Smallville Volume 1.......2006-03-16

Out of the two soundtracks, this one is the best. The mixture of songs has the feel of the show. There are about 5 or 6 songs that are the best. I was a little disapointed by the lack of extras in the inset, but if you have the boxsets, then this id not a major thing.
good listening :-)

Reissuing old dance records can be dicey, because so many of them don't age well. There are exceptions, of course, like this digitally spiffed up and beautifully packaged, 3-disc Renaissance collection from Sasha and John Digweed. Released originally in 1994, it's become a milestone representing not only the celebrated duo's first recorded mix but also a snapshot of British dance at its raving, glorious peak. Disc 1 opens with a triplet of Leftfield's "Song for Life" and moves through still-potent tracks from Disco Evangelists ("De Niro") and F. Machine ("Child Bride"). The run continues on discs 2 and 3, as it lightly glides through Fluke's "Slide" and EMF's "They're Here." And what would a trip down amnesia lane be without a stop at Moby's "Go"? Nostalgia only goes so far, and some songs that sounded great at the time are a little soft now (see "Not Over Yet"). But that innocence gets at the heart of the collection's appeal, reminding us of when dance music seemed primed to take over the planet. -Matthew Cooke

2 out of 5 stars Yikes...Cheers to Electronica's Evolution.......2007-06-05

If you recognize the tracks by name and have a strong sense of nostalgia or you are a newcomer and are curious about what electronica sounded like in the early 90's then it may be worth your greenbacks. Otherwise save your pennies on this Renaissance novelty.

Three discs featuring very poorly aged tracks encompassing various genres during their early (but continual) evolution.

I try to stay clear of accusing DJ's (that I also consider artists) of in your face commercialism, but this compilation has me changing my tune slightly. Re-releasing a compilation from 1994 in 2005 seems like an easy way to sucker a few people into buying an old collection of severely outdated tracks. Apparently the market was there as the original release was selling for up to $400 as a collector's item.

If you are curious about the history of electronica, and more specificly, Sasha and Digweed's early (possible their first) commercial release then you may be satified with this three disc set. Otherwise there are much better "Mix Collections" out there that document electronica's evolution.

Disc 1 and 2 get 2/5 stars while disc 3 gets 3/5 stars (just for the fact that it doesn't have multiple re-mixes of the same track on it like discs 1 and 2 do).

4 out of 5 stars The Renaissance Men.......2007-01-13

Celebratory and expansive, house music (especially during its infancy) was never meant to be taken too seriously. It was (and still is) the musical embodiment of a very specific mood. It is fueled by adrenaline and charged by neural sparks of creativity that can be both feral and robotic. Like all mediums, its growing pains were sometimes evidenced by awkward (and incredibly embarassing) moments (see The Best of House series for a few good examples of these), but there were also shining moments of brilliance, like this three-disc set.

I disagree that this mix should be highly rated if for no other reason than because of its place in house history (unlike cars or stamps, the value of music rarely increases along with its age). However, I will say that many of these twelve-year-old cuts aren't just a testament to the leaps and bounds that house music made during its genesis (thanks in no small part to Sasha & Digweed), but some of them are still very relevant as markers of fine craftsmanship, especially in a genre that is threatened every year with death by dull monotony. This album -- one of the first of its kind to go gold, and single-handedly ensuring the fame of Sasha and Digweed as house music's most trusted ambassadors -- is everything that good club music still wants to be.

Okay, well, not everything. Even the Almighty S & D aren't immune to a little dating. Each of the three discs has patchy moments where the music misfires ("Tranceillusion"), skids on atonal redundancy ("House Stompin'"), or is just plain annoying ("Bombscare"). And for listeners familiar with S & D's latest oeuvre, some of the tunes will definitely sound a mite-bit backward. This is to be expected when you're listening to house music that's over a decade old.

But what's a pleasant surprise are the caramel-smooth progressions and transitions (the "Song For Life" trilogy), the skittery electro-tangles ("Slid"), and the ecstatic, round-house power hits ("Sublime"). Although the discs contain their fair share of crumbling, poorly-aged retro-rhythms, these weak spots are obscured by the lush vibrancy of the rest of the albums.

Sasha and Digweed may have come a long way since 1994, but that doesn't mean their starting point was necessarily a bad place. It had its flaws, its cracks and gaudy mouldings, but -- as this set proves -- their point of origin wasn't something embarrasing which they have since left behind. It was a solid bedrock, a great wide launching pad, that they continue to reinvent in newer and better ways. Fans of the genre and of the artists should buy this album to rediscover the classics that goaded the music into loftier realms; newcomers should buy this album to learn just how timeless even this most modern of musics can still be.

5 out of 5 stars Essential..........2006-10-21

Techno and the whole electronica scene has certainly splintered from its early days with genre after genre and label after label being attached to its many forms and sounds. But it all starts here, really. It was this mix, this year, this scene that blazed the trail for the rise of techno as, dare I say it, popular. Oh, sure, there was techno prior to this but not in a format for mass consumption. It was mostly an "insider" thing with a few hints in the marketplace that it was coming as all scenes do when they hit critical mass.

I was a latecomer to the whole thing having dabbled in some Eon in the early 90s and beginning listening to Moby sometime circa 1994, about the same time as this was released. I first heard John Digweed when I stumbled across his Global Underground Los Angeles mix in 1999. Consuming everything GU I would eventually stumble across this, purchasing a copy from the UK for a pretty penny.

This mix captures a snapshot in time. The opening three tracks with the various remixes of Leftfield instantly set the tone that something special is happening. With singing divas, remixes of artists who are now fairly well known, Moby being one of them, these mixes capture a moment in time, an era, the re-emergence of dance music.

From time to time I will pull this out to listen to it, hoping it doesn't sound cheesy, dated and ridiculous. It never really does. At worst it is sentimental. Though it does show its age (especially some of the diva tunes, an obligatory insert in all mixes of this period, overplayed to the point of parody), this is not in the negative. It still sounds sweet and is a gentle reminder that for as much as techno has "sold out" today (television theme songs, movie soundtracks and commercials) that it still sounds remarkably fresh.

As every classic rocker needs some of the essentials of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd with newer staples such as Metallica, Nirvana and Guns 'n' Roses, anyone who likes techno or DJ mixes needs to get a copy and develop deep roots.

1 out of 5 stars Practically the worst Sasha & Digweed mix ever.......2006-03-07

I've been listening to Sasha and Digweed for a very very long time, and I wanted this Renaissance mix collection after going to the nightclub in the U.K. because of the amazing experiences there. However, I was disturbed when I listened to this 3cd set. Infact it doesn't reflect on anything Sasha has done even before these mixes. I would never have bought this item had I known how horrible it is. While the mixing is good, the track selection is not what I expected, I learned my lesson...

5 out of 5 stars Essential CD for sasha fans.......2006-01-07

If you don't like Sasha and are just getting into him I suggest you try something a bit more current. This CD has been recently remastered and the mixing, production level, and track selection is truly historical but this CD is for people that like Sasha and want to own his classic sets hence the term collectros edition used on the casing. If you are new to Sasha or the genre get involver and then Ibiza and then Paul Oakenfold's tranceport for his take on the Gus Gus track purple which is considered by most people to be one of the most awe-inspiring remixes of all time.

Bottom line: U want it? go for it its pretty impressive from start to finish, featuring the likes of Leftfield, Sasha himself, moby and a tremendous host of others.

4 out of 5 stars Chopped & Screwed.......2006-03-26

I haven't heard the orginal release but I picked up the Chopped & Screwed version today. I'm not much of a Chopped & Screwed fan but it was impressive, which brought me here to purchase the orginal release. A common problem with the Screwed/Chopped is that you can't hear enough of the artists voice/inflections to appreciate the work.

Anyway, her lyrics sound a little more mature and earned.

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2005-01-05

Gangsta Boo is one of my favorite female rappers (checc reviews of her other albums) but this album is not hitting. The production on the album is terrible and her signature flow is almost nonexistent. Even her lyrics are wack on this album. One of the freestyles she did was horrendous and I'm wondering how it made the album. Then I started wondering how much time was actually put into the final product. The first three songs are the only good songs: Sippin & Spinnin, Zoned Out, and Scared, The rest are throwaway tracks. Hopefully this is only a bump in the road for Lady Gangsta Boo, cause she has the potential to release great albums. Not recommended. 1.5 stars

4 out of 5 stars Gangsta Boo's hottest release ever!!!.......2004-11-27

She really proves everything that she talks about. probebly one of the realest females in the rap industry. This cd has so many hot tracks, and only two duds. The beats on this cd are better than they have ever been and there are some really good rappers featured on this album, 8-ball, Playa fly, Bun-B, etc. There is also a screwed and chopped version available out there if you can find it and that version is very good if you like that kind of music.

4 out of 5 stars Boo's Back!.......2004-08-28

You have to show love to the lady. She left her previoous represtatives that she'd grown up with and started her own label with a sick cartel. Her artists (featured on this CD) are smart in sticking with Boo. She's living proof that women can kick in the door and stay in the game for longevity. This album is tight. It's a must-have for all Gangsta Boo fans.

4 out of 5 stars Typical 80's Pop Albums, Sort Of.......2007-02-09

When I got this in the mail, I put it in and started listening to "Birds Of Prey" immediately. I fell in love with "my body the car" because of the melody, the lyrics, and the arrangements. Goodness! This was released in the 80's, but it was strong. I was hoping the rest of the album would follow suit. It didn't quite follow the success of the first song. First problem I might have with the album is the use of synths and drum machines. While I am not technophobic, I lament that they limited themselves to these instruments for the album. The arrangements and the songs, as a result, run together. However, the arrangements ARE clever, especially for the genre. They really come up with interesting things to do with their synths, and keep things as fresh as they can. The melodies and lyrics are all top notch as well, making this a flawed, but worthy album.

Histor Mix is quite an interesting beast. Taking past 10cc and Godley and Creme songs, mixing them up, and coming up with new Art Of Noise beats and melodies, it is as confusing a listen as one can imagine. It's not EXACTLY a remix album, but it's similar in it's use of outside elements. To be honest, it's not exactly the easiest thing to listen to, with "Cry" standing out as a great, beautiful new composition. The rest of the album is interesting in a sonically experimental way, but I wouldn't suggest listening to this just before you go to bed.

    5 out of 5 stars First rate.......2005-01-23

For G&C fans this is a great buy. You may not have heard them, but the two albums on this twofer are excellent. They have all the elements of the pair's best work: beautifully crafted pop, humor, exquisite vocals, exceptional musicianship, knockout production, and eccentric (but not pretentious) experimentation. There are some nice bonuses, including the single "Welcome to Breakfast Television," and a stirring remix of "Snack Attack." I can't imagine that fans of G&C wouldn't like this CD, and you never know when this music will become permanently unavailable. Snap it up while you can.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting mix of two G& C albums.......2004-08-11

Two interesting if not entirely successful Godley & Creme albums put together for this release. Birds of Prey opens with the brilliant "My Body the Car" presented with Creme and Godley imitating instruments with their voices and a lyric that is accurate if slightly skewed. Birds of Prety suffers from a minor flaw--it's a product of its time. The decision to use a drum machine throughout most of the album identifies it as an album from the 80's. That's not necessarily a bad thing there are many classic albums that sound very much of their time but the use of real drums might have given the album considerably more power. Luckily, the compositions are, for the most part, strong enough to over come the limitations of the production choices.

"Worm and the Rattlesnake" comes next with its inventive melody and lyrics. "Cat's Eyes" sounds like a wild collison between the style of the previous album and the 80's production touches of Lol Creme. "Samson" sounds as if it could be a musical outtake of a Pokemon game. The most satisfying track, though, is the powerful "Save a Mountain for Me" with Kevin Godley's soaring vocals. "Out in the Cold" with its odd rhythm bed and the vocal distortion closes out this album which uses as its theme the different types of prey and predators that exist in the world. The bonus tracks are a mixed bunch; "Welcome to Breakfast TV" sounds like a parody of the themes used for radio shows and television shows during the 80's. We also get a dance remix of "Samson" one of the more interesting tracks on the album. Didn't care for the remix but the hopping beat will get your toes tapping. "Golden Boy" soars on Godley's beautiful vocal and has a number of witty, funny lines.

A bit less sucessful is the duo's next to last album "The History Mix Volume One". Buoyed by the terrific single "Cry" (included here in both its album version and the single version as a bonus track). This remix album done by Godley & Creme with Nigel Grey takes a number of classic 10cc and Godley & Creme tracks melding them into interesting and sometimes completely unrecognizable new tracks. "Wet Rubber Soup" takes "Rubber Bullets", "Life is a Minestrone" and "I'm Not in Love" weds them to a dance beat and adds some new vocals to make a dance hall favorite.

Next we get the grand long version of "Cry" with the line "big boys don't cry" used as a clever introduction to the song. This is followed by "Expanding Business/The Dare you Man/Hum Drum Boys in Paris/Mountain Tension" all of which sample tracks as diverse as "Neaderthal Man" to "Business is Business". It's quite interesting in spots. The bonus tracks include "Love Bombs" , a remix of "Snack Attack" from Ismism, the single edit version of "Wet Rubber Soup", a remix of "Golden Boy", "Light Me Up" all of which use the thumping dance beat common throughout most of the album. It's not Godley & Creme's best album but certainly their most successful.

5 out of 5 stars Leave it to Rhino to create the best possible sampler.......2005-10-19

If you're new to the genre of space-age pop, I'd reccomend picking up three discs. "Space Age Bachelor Pad Music" by Esquivel, Rhino's "Exotica" Martin Denny comp, and this collection of some more obscure artists from the great Rhino records. The best of the more obscure Exotica is represented here, as these tracks are surreal, campy, and dated to the extreme. Its hard to find good exotica (as another reviewer put it) mainly because while some of it is great, the more sedate stuff is boring. Most of this stuff was made to exploit the new marvel of stereo sound, but even without that merit its entertaining. Some of the tunes here are bound to get stuck in your head for a week. It conjures up images of the future of tomorrow, where anything is possible as far as space travel goes. Music so incredibly dated and yet so incredibly fresh and unique at the same time, I fully reccomend this album. Please Rhino, get this back in print.

4 out of 5 stars Too cool for words.......2005-02-10

This album consists of "Space-Age Bachelor Pad Music". It is all pop instrumentals recorded between 1956 and 1962. Generally, pop instrumentals recorded during this time period were kind of dull (see anything by Jackie Gleason). But for this CD, the wildest and swingingest tracks were selected (although there is nothing by Esquivel, the King of Space-Age Pop). Most of the tunes here have bizarre instrumentation and crazy stereo effects. Which, of course, is exactly what makes this CD fun to listen to. If you dig cool and strange music, I think you will enjoy this CD.

      4 out of 5 stars It's like, spreem, man!.......2001-10-24

Fun, fun, fun. If you're just getting into "lounge" music, this is a great place to start. It is all instrumentals, just so you are aware. So, pour yourself into something fabulous and enjoy!
