Whether because of a creative impasse or a return to her club roots, Shawn Colvin opted to pass some of the time between her breakthrough Steady On and later, more mature efforts with this 1994 collection of cover songs. Paging through a latter-day Great American Songbook, Colvin acquits herself well enough on a selection of Bob Dylan, Jimmy Webb, and Tom Waits songs. Less successful are her rewordings of the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" (Colvin preserves traditional family values by switching the "she" to a "he") and Talking Heads' "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," neither of which benefit from the stripped-down approach. This is a pleasant enough album for fans, but newcomers are advised to start with Colvin's excellent A Few Small Repairs. --Bill Forman
Customer Reviews:
I just love this album.......2007-06-01
I just had to leave a five-star rating in hopes of bumping up the overall rating of this album. This is at the top of my list of Shawn Colvin albums, with Polaroids probably being right next to it. I especially love her version of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go." I also love "Killing the Blues," "Window to the World," and "If These Walls Could Speak."
Shawn Colvin has such a smooth, iridescent, mesmerizing voice. One of the most soothing voices I've ever heard.
Shawn Colvin is great!.......2007-04-28
Did you see her with Lyle Lovett on Austin City Limits? Super!
A question.......2007-03-14
This is a good album....but I had a question for Colvin fans that I could not find on the net.
The local radio station use to play a radio Promo of "Every little thing he does is magic" that was acoustic guitar only without the strings. Does anyone have any info on how to get it? The version on Cover girl is not as good.
Not Shawn's best effort..........2006-02-22
I am in love with Shawn Colvin. I love her in concert and consider her to be one of the great voices of our time. But I only "loved" a few of the songs on this CD. But I do feel that even a "mediocre" Ms. Colvin is still better than almost anything else out there.
Shawn Colvin does other people's songs her way.......2005-07-11
Believe it or not, Shawn Colvin started out playing hard rock with her own group, the Shawn Colvin Band in Illinois. But the music played havoc with her voice. Then she ended up in the Dixie Diesels, a Western swing band in Texas. By the early 1980s she had moved to New York and was writing and singing folks songs there and in Boston, when she was not appearing in off Broadway shows like "Pump Boys and Dinettes" and "Lie of the Mind." By 1987 she was singing backup on Suzanne Vega's hit song "Luka" and a year later paired up with John Leventhal, writing the lyrics to his melodies. A decade later we get to her big album "A Few Small Repairs," with the hit single "Sunny Came Home," which won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
The 1994 album "Cover Girl" is actually a look backwards in Colvin's ascent on the music scene. When Colvin first started working the folk circuit in Greenwich Village in the early 1980s she would take rock songs and turn them into tunes she could play and sing on her guitar, such as "Every Little Thing [He] Does Is Magic" by the Police and "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" by the Talking Heads. Of course, when she was signed to a recording contract Colvin focused on her original material. But the generation of music lovers weaned on MTV's "Unplugged" are more amenable to hearing covers of familiar songs done in interesting ways, which justifies this effort. This is not to say that everything here is a radical interpretation of the text, because that would certainly not apply to Dylan's "You're Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go." The only problem is that the best songs on the album are ones that are not mainstream works and it is hard to appreciate a cover song if you do not know the original (e.g., Greg Brown's "One Cool Remove" or Willis Alan Ramsey's "Satin Sheets").
This album is a mixture of studio and live tracks, and after listening to the likes of "Heart of Saturday Night" by Tom Waits and "Twilight" by Robbie Robertson, I will state a preference for the former. I have picked up Colvin's last album in preparation for hearing her in concert again this month. Since the last time was Lilith Fair it will be nice to hear her do more than a short set, and in addition to listening to her best known songs I will be interested to see what cover songs she shares with us this time around. Hearing this album can only whet your appetite for such things.
Concert Update: Colvin, back to playing solo with a pair of acoustic guitars, did some very inttresting covers during her performance at the Big Tent Chautauqua. She did a capella versions of the provincial song of Ontario and a couple of beer jingles ("Amazing what you remember," she told us). She also did "If These Walls Could Speak." Then during her three song encore she opened with "(Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night" (which apparently she only sings on Satruday nights) and closed with a stellar version of "You're Going to Make Me Lonesome When You Go" (her guitar playing is as good as her singing, which my wife finds a compelling combination of being husky and high). So all of the "new" stuff was from the album she is working on for release next February, which will certainly give us something to look forward to.

As Hammerstein writes in the opening song, "Many dames with lofty aims strive for lofty goals"--and Te Kanawa strives for successful crossover. Her beautiful singing exhibits impeccable diction and excellent phrasing; but "A Fine Romance" lacks anger and humor, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" lacks a storyteller, and "All the Things You Are" lacks romanticism. However, happy songs like "All Through the Day," "Look for the Silver Lining," and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill," are successfully interpreted. Jonathan Tunick's orchestrations enhance Kern's beauty through his captivating use of obbligato instruments. A pleasant, if not wholly satisfactory, listening experience. --Barbara Eisner Bayer
Customer Reviews:
kiri kern.......2007-03-29
Kiri is sensational on this CD. Jerome Kern music is stupendous and the arrangements superb. Three top esses.
Kiri sing Kern is a great experience.......2004-01-18
I love the way she sings Kern's songs. Though certainly not opera, Kern's songs benefit from an an operatic approach--not all of them, but certainly ones such Smoke gets in your Eyes, The song is you, All the things you are. I love Kern;s songs sung in many styles but Kiri's way is one of the best.
On the other hand, I did not like Kiri singing Berlin.
Lacks Splendor.......2002-09-01
Though I do enjoy Kiri's interpretation of most music, and this CD was decent, I did not find any piece particularly memorable.
The voice is undeniably beautiful, and Kiri has managed to keep her maturing voice sounding somewhat young, yet I find that I much prefer her rendition of "The Laughing Song" to that of "Smoke Gets in YOur Eyes."
If you love Kern, and couldn't care less who performs it, than purchase this CD. If you are a fan of Kiris', then perhaps it would be best to avoid this purchase...for it is not a shining star in her vast collection of CDs. All in all, it was a disappointment.
White Glove Kern.......2001-05-20
I am the first to admit that most "crossover" albums, be they of classical performers singing pop or vice versa never quite cross over. This album does splendidly. Kern's music is the most related to classical operetta , and therefore the least jazziest. Operatic soprano Kiri Te Kanawa gives luscious, heartfelt readings of these wonderful songs, backed by glamorous orchestrations. Hearing a voice of such opulence and beauty in this music is a rare treat. Just listen to "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" ,"Long Ago and Far Away" or "The Song is You" and prepare to be swept away to another, more elegant time.
mildly disappointing.......2000-09-30
Sometimes cross-over works, sometimes not. While Kiri te Kanawa has a beautiful voice, she never gets into the idiom of these Jerome Kern masterpieces sufficiently to convey their stories or their subtleties. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes especially stands out, she sings it with none of the pathos the song demands and her version pales compared to the Platters. The orchestral arrangements are decent and in many of the songs the purity of her voice is enough to carry them, but overall I would say this is a disappointing example of a crossover record. Ms. te Kanawa should stick to what she does best.

Customer Reviews:
The best from The Best Singer and Tenor of all time........2007-04-24
This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.
Gorgeous.......2001-11-25
Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.
Another great CD by the greatest singer of all time!!!.......2001-07-17
Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

How About What the Composer Wanted?.......2004-11-27
Gershwin, Kern, Berlin, even Victor Herbert share the questionable distinction of having been "improved" upon by subsequent arrangers until the music becomes frozen and dead (funeral march arrangements of Blue Skies), or so "Jazzed up" that it is a distortion in the other direction. Joan and Morris and William Bolcom "honor" all that is in the music of Irving Berlin by performing it in an honest and polished manner that relies only on those qualities to "sell" the songs. John Wilson, Musicologist

Customer Reviews:
The Real Thing.......2007-01-27
I'm a HUGE Mantovani fan and have had mixed results trying to upgrade my collection to CDs. This collection is the original orchestra arrangements of all the classics. This is the one to buy.
Fantastic Collection of Favorites!!!.......2003-07-02
The Mantovanti Orchestra shows off their "marvelous versatility" in this "wonderful" collection of "8 CDs", with titles that tell you "just what to expect", such as: "The Love Songs", "Memorable Classics", "Itallian Favorites", "On Broadway", etc. You can set the MOOD for practically ANY occassion! There are even some "popular" selections that we all know and treasure like: "Moon River", "Over the Rainbow" and "Autum Leaves"!
You will NOT want to remove these GREAT CDs from your CD Player, once you have listened to them! They make "nice" background music for small get-togethers or "lovely" background music for those "ROMANTIC DINNERS", for you and your "SPECIAL SOMEONE"!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SET!!! It is a GREAT DEAL for the money, even at the full price!!!
