Album Description

Admirers of Dar Williams, Jonatha Brooke, Indigo Girls and intelligently emotional, intricately harmonized folk-pop in general will find much to praise in "Blame Sally", the self-titled, self-released first studio recording by an all-female Bay Area quartet that became a KFOG favorite on the strength of a live album. Blame Sally has four strong singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists in Pam Delgado, Jeri Jones, Renee Harcourt and Monica Pasqual, and while their individual voices are appealing, their harmonies are addictively creamy. Imaginatively arranged, expansive narrative songs such as"Touch", "Shame" and "Planet Ranch" are radio (and coffee shop) ready. —Joe Brown, San Francisco Chronicle Datebook

5 out of 5 stars Great harmonies, excellent singers........2006-11-12

I watched these ladies in person in Springdale, Utah this summer, then bought 2 of their CD's. They had excellent stage presence and their song writing and singing skills shine through on this CD. I recommend that anyone who likes folk rock, in which I think this group fits, should buy this CD.

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

    Album Description

Superfecta presents NMA's first-ever career-spanning 'Best Of' collection, Great Expectations!

18 singles are included--from their indie days on Abstract, to their major label days on EMI and Sony, to their recent releases on Attack Attack. Compiled with the assistance of lead singer/songwriter, Justin Sullivan, this release features hand-picked versions of their singles. The Extended Mix of Poison Street appears for the first time on a commercial CD and a new edit of Purity was requested by Mr. Sullivan himself. Furthermore, seven of the tracks have never before been released in the United States.

Longtime NMA cover artist Joolz has created brand new artwork for the album. And world renowned music critic & NMA fan from day one, Jack Rabid, has composed some stellar liner notes.

All of the tracks have been Digitally Remastered, so whether you're a longtime fan or just discovering New Model Army, this is the collection for you.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars an army that will never fall.......2005-01-14

New Model Army has often been compared to the likes of WAR-era U2, The Alarm, and countless obscure UK Punk bands who lean towards political and religious subjects, yet they are in a class by themselves by securing the dubious honor of being one of the few Punk bands to actively incorporate the use of a violin or an acoustic guitar into their sound. if there was ever a band who had such a burning desire in their hearts and minds for anything whatsoever, it is New Model Army. and this album certainly lives up to its title. on 1984's 'The Price', Justin Sullivan's introspective and breathy vocals ignite a passionate fire as he channels the vocal stylings of Sting back in the days when he was fighting for New Wave justice with The Police. on 1987's 'White Coats,' Sullivan and Co. question the existence of life, the tragedy of suicide, and what lies ahead of us in the great beyond. the two most recognized tracks on this disc are both from NMA's standout year of 1989: 'Vagabonds' and 'Green And Grey'. 'Vagabonds' is a true battle cry for anyone who has ever felt lost or alienated as Sullivan chants "we are in this together" in the song's chorus, set to a military-style drum beat, a strong guitar, and a piercing violin strain a la 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.' 'Green And Grey' is a haunting acoustic lament to a deceased friend. if you have ever lost someone you love, this song will surely make you feel their presence. it has also been said that Justin Sullivan's voice is "too pristine" to be fronting a Punk band. but like the music he sings, he is fighting for a noble cause, which in this case would be the fact that Punk doesn't always have to sound chaotic to be considered aggressive. and Sullivan's stunning rasp certainly proves that point.
although New Model Army never reached the enormous amount of popularity that the aforementioned U2 achieved, they remain one of the most driven bands of the 1980's and beyond. no matter what struggles they face, this is one army that will never fall.

5 out of 5 stars As good as a band can possibly be.......2004-05-18

This career-spanning retrospective of NMA is nothing more than a document of the only rock band that really matters anymore. R.E.M. have wandered off somewhere, U2 has become too inconsistent, and Bob Mould seems to have retired. NMA keeps soldiering on, however, and even with a five-year hiatus in the mid-1990s, they still bring that fire and passion that they always did. Every song is delivered as if it is the most important news you'll ever hear, and NMA continue to buck against all trends. While they may never have a massive commercial success here in the US, one listen should convince anyone that there is no one who deserves it more.

This CD suffers from one flaw: it should have been two. There are a few singles missing ("Queen of My Heart", most obviously, as well as the live version of "Space" from 1991's Raw Melody Men), but it gets five stars anyway because the material on it is so crucial and arresting and flat-out fantastic that it could hardly receive anything less. Of particular note is the US-only remix of 1986's "Poison Street", a must for collectors as its album The Ghost Of Cain is widely regarded as one of their best. Three tracks come from 1988's Thunder And Consolation, although in all honesty any three songs from that masterpiece would fit perfectly here. Understand that this is a band whose 1994 b-side compilation sounds better and more complete than almost any other artist's studio release.

NMA have always been overlooked in the US, although as of this writing they are touring here for the first time in at least 10 years, playing clubs around the nation. Any fan of English punk, post-punk, rock, balladry and lyrics that actually say something should absolutely not miss this. Those of you who do not know NMA could very easily start here and hear what happens when you don't sell out.

Combining the talents of Sly Dunbar on drums along with the vocal and song-writing pedigree of the Mighty Diamonds, this is a record truly representative of the Front Line label. It was originally released into the summer of 1978 & has never before been released on CD.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars * 1976 INSTRUMENTAL DUB CLASSIC *.......2005-09-19

Well Charged consists of a number of dub versions of tracks mostly from The Mighty Diamonds LP, "Right Time." The music here is played by a loose group of the finest Jamaican session men, known collectively as The Revolutionaries ("Vital Dub" is just a name given the Revolutionaries by this particular producer for this particular set). The results are nine tracks of purely ecstatic instrumental dub from 1976, every one being a juicy, colorful and joyous celebration of life and music. If you like tasty bass grooves, skanky upfull rhythms, splashes of organ, and loads of tripped out and happily echoing horns, then you will find this to be a masterpiece of instrumental reggae and dub. The fact that these are all dubs of Mighty Diamonds tracks engenders the disc with a truly cohesive feel emotionally and instrumentally.

Musicians playing on these tracks include Sly Dunbar, Ansel Collins, Sticky Thompson, Ranchie McLean, Dougie Bryan, Ossie Hibbert, Herman Marquis, and the great Tommy McCook. These are jazzy, irie, skanky reggae instrumentals, which would be fantastic on their own. The tastefully applied dubs (mixing courtesy of Ernest Hoo Kim & Ossie Hibbert) only sweeten the pot, adding just the right amount of reverb here, the right amount of echo there, and leaving out bits and pieces only sporadically, rather than stripping it down to drum and bass for long, sparse periods. Like I said, these dubs are juicy.

Sound quality is excellent here, so what, if any, are the drawbacks? Well, despite the hilarious photo of an utterly spliffed individual on the cover, the insides are bare, and the back cover only provides the briefest bit of info on recording and personnel. The length is only just over a half an hour, but the price of the disc still makes it a bargain, and it plays well over and over again, sounding fresh every time. Every track, bar non, is a five star number, so you won't need to be skipping any tracks, which ads further to the value. So really, the drawbacks are minor, but the rewards are great.

Ask a fan of the Revolutionaries what is their best dub set, and you will find "Well Charged" at the top of the list more often than not. This is classic and positively indispensable instrumental dub, and we are blessed to have it, end of story.

5 out of 5 stars vital dub: well charged.......2001-06-22

a classic 1976 recording that hits the spot. not a lot of effects, very little vocals. rather a short recording by today's standards, and virtually anonymous without much in the way of liner notes. features some big names, however: sly, ansel collins, tommy mccook, sticky. leads mostly by horns and keyboards--this music stands on its own as instrumentals. the drawbacks of the poor packaging are more than made up for by the quality of the music and the low price.

5 out of 5 stars True Legacy Rock - Culprit set the stage for things to come.......2007-03-11

These guys rock. If you love 80's metal, you MUST know Culprit and own this album - they were the predecessor to the metal rock and roll that we grew up with and loved. After listing to this album, a profound sense of respect is due. Hat's off to Jeff L'Heureux, Johnny DeVol, Kjartan Kristoffersen, Scott Earl and Bud Burrill - and thanks to Hellion Records and Amazon for keeping the sound alive and making this album available !

      5 out of 5 stars Seattle, At it's finest!.......2002-12-19

Seattle in the early 80's was one of the defining moments in my life as so many new artists (most of whom were my friends) began to emerge showcasing their musical abilities. The NWOBHM had taken root and spawned a newfound avenue of artistic expression and the results are not only etched in time but have forged a permanent place in the annals of Rock and Roll! Culprit was a band that paved the way for what has since become the "Seattle sound". Born of a three piece hard hitting power trio that included John DeVol's Guitar Wizardry , Scott Earl's destroying the stage as well as his fingers on bass, and Bud Burrill's pioneering techniques on drums. Shortly thereafter, Jeff Le'Roux and KJ Kristofferson would join and the result was a 9 track album full of high energy, raw heavy metal that even 20 years later still holds to the test of time. Culprit's live shows were a non stop adrenaline rush that fed and nutured the eyes, ears, and soul of those in attendence. If heavy metal is your forte-Culprit is a must have. A+

I haven't received my CD yet but I don't need it to revue the album. I've had 2 vinyl's since they where first released. After years of storage and then more years without a record player I'm more than ready to hear the classic early heavy metal riffs of Johnny and Kjartan the fierce rhythm of Budd and Scott and last but not least the awesome vocals of Jeff L'Heureux. Definitely a heavy metal classic, the only band I can think of off the top of my head to compare them with is RIOT ... and to me that's way up there baby. It truly would have been great to hear another album or 2 from these guys but at least I have a CD now. Culprit Lives!

Culprit was one of those bands that should have been huge. Guitars, bass, drums and vocals roar along without burying melody. Tons of energy from these sons of Seattle. Good production quality. Oh, what might have been.

      Album Description

Weaponizing bass lines, shifting the timing of energies, moving backwords heading toward nonsense. The low end materializes itself in spirals while the attraction of grooves empties the bowels of ecstasy. The disease of dynamics opposed to walls of sounds. A modern temple to harmony travelers. Ranging from dub to funk, from free jazz to ambient, Charged has been travelling across borders, manipulating perception and physical boundaries.

Led by acclaimed Italian composer/producer Eraldo Bernocchi (Sigillum S, Mick Harris, Francesca Lago, Jungle Brothers), Charged Live captures performances in Japan, Germany, and Holland with an ensemble consisting of bassist Bill Laswell (Herbie Hancock, Pharoah Sanders, Tony Williams, Peter Gabriel), electric trumpet player Toshinori Kondo (DJ Krush, United Future Organization, William Parker), drummer Hamid Drake (Peter Brotzmann, Ken Vandermark), percussionist Aiyb Dieng (Sly Dunbar, Herbie Hancock, Bootsy Collins), and turntablist DJ Disk (Rock Steady Crew, Primus).

5 out of 5 stars better than the sum.......2004-06-20

This is an excellent live piece from eraldo bernocchi and bill laswell, with all the people listed above. This has way more of a jamming dub feel to it than the studio cut. The recording is really nice but not as nice as the tabla beat science live piece but better than the nicky scopelitis ecstacis live. The last song also has gnawa musicians of morroco. This is the best guitar ive ever heard from bernocchi. Dj disk who i dont really appriciate even though hese disked for the best in the world is ok on this release except for one song hese really got in. The first and second songs are some of the best ive ever heard from laswell. Gotta get enjoy dubbing/ if you like this one ecstacis live is almost the samr band except nicky and raul bjorkheimer on guitar, they cover mantra, and black lotus.

      Album Description

Album Description Laura Doyle's amazing debut, "No Easy Answers" takes on many difficult topics including child abuse, suicide, and love lost and discovered. No matter what the message Laura manages to take the listeners on a journey of discovery, and healing with thoughtful, intelligent lyrics and emotionally charged vocals.

From the first notes of "Awaken" through to the award winning first single,"Let You Go" and the finale of "Radiance" you are somehow, entranced, intoxicated, and enlightened all at the same time.Laura is often compared,to the likes of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Dido, and Sinead O'Connor among others. As lofty as these comparisons are one of Laura's most impactful qualities is her "girl next door" sense of lifes reality. Enjoy!!!

      5 out of 5 stars A great CD........2004-05-14

Hi, I'm not normally known for posting, but hey I got this CD with my girlfriend at the time, from Laura herself in Vancouver, how cool is that? and of course her dog helped =). The music is great and Laura seems very cool. I think you should give her a chance. You can't go wrong in buying this CD. Not too many other CDs deserve your cash like this one does.

      5 out of 5 stars Seattle.......2002-07-26

This is a great CD!! Laura has a wonderful voice and the whole album makes you feel. I also met Laura briefly on the streets of Vancouver, BC. She is as real as her music. You need to buy this one!

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, haunting music.......2002-03-17

For me the stand-out songs are definitely "Your Love" -- which features Doyle's exquisite haunting vocals, "Chasing Bees" -- which has a nice rollicking rhythm and gorgeous lyrics, "View of the Child" -- which is lovely, contemplative and sad, "All The Pretty Horses" -- which is the most aching lullaby-like tune you'll ever hear and "Last Exit to Surrey" -- which appears to be an autobiographical song about being strong in the face of the suicide of the singer's father. All is not doom and gloom on this CD, however. The tone is always surprisingly upbeat even when dealing with painful subject matter. Definitely worth checking out!
