Although this CD has an interesting lineup of songs, I found the versions of the songs bland and uninspiring. The recording is thin sounding and lacks the rich full sound that makes the steel drums a wonderful instrument.

A most distinctive singer. His clear mellow voice combined with that Jamaican accent is a perfect vehicle to express the range of emotions contained in his Caribbean flavored songs. Then there are other songs, less exotic, but still delivered from the heart. There are dozens Harry Belafonte albums, but this one represents an accurate cross section of what the man is capable of. No regrets.

I used to own the original best of compilation of HB but I was not really satisfied as I thought it was pretty short and the sound quality leaves much to be desired and so when this one came out, I quickly grabbed it.

The sound is much better and the disc has more tracks but I did feel the loss of "Matilda" as well but I suppose if you are looking for a decent-sounding one disc version of HB's best work, this is probably the cd you should get; at least until they decide to clean the sound up further and remaster it again...

This is without a doubt his best single disc collection, and with a written history in the booklet. Obviously it's missing a few key songs, but at 22 tracks it's hard to complain. Most of his best songs are here, including "Land Of The Sea And Sun", "Jump In The Line", "Cocoanut Woman", "Jamaica Farewell", "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)", and his early favorite "Day-O". Plus there's the Christmas time classic "Mary's Boy Child". Of what's not here, I miss "Scratch, Scratch" the most. His slower songs are some of the best ever, but it's his more upbeat ones that are so fun to sing along with, regardless of whether you're 7, or 57.

Like many reviewers who remember 33 1/3 LP, I do own this one. I can't give it up as it is autographed by Mr Belafonte...I stood out in the rain behind the stage door after a concert by Belafonte and he graciously autographed this cover LP to me. The music is great! But I can't play the LP anymore for fear of damaging it. So I have purchased the CD so I can play it on our cruise to the Caribbean Islands this Christmas. Even if you aren't going to cruise, this CD is great for the pool or beach or tropical parties. Everyone seems to know the words and, like pineapples and coconuts in lush settings with tropical drinks, "it's party time!" While I know there is a more serious side to most Island music and performers, including Belafonte, this is still a full recording for a fun evening.

This CD has the quality of the original LP. I listened for only a second and was swiftly carried back in time to my childhood, when the swaying choruses of Calypso streamed through our household. Harry B. was a part of my soul, my "forever in my heart" music. I still sing his songs in the car, the shower, wherever...humming along in silent elevators. The CD brings those earphones I use alive. I recommend it to anyone who wants a natural high for just a Caribbean dream. Nothing beats Harry Belafonte!

now i have heard better calypso recordings, but this one will do just as well. i think that belafonte and the producers got the true feel of the islands on here. i would've liked to have heard more upbeat material, but i cannot deny the tropical feel of the album as a whole. this is an essential 50s album. what amazes about this album is how long it stayed at #1 on the album charts...........especially considering the fact that it was done during the early days of the rock 'n' roll era.

Ocean breezes and steel drum music absolutely make my Caribbean vacations, so I was thrilled to find this album to I could bring a taste of the tropics to my own backyard.

I was so disappointed when I received this album...the sound of the steel drums are completely ruined by the addition of one of those old organs everybody's goofy uncle had in the 60s and 70s. You know the ones...they let you put a samba, bossa nova or fox trot beat over every Billy Joel song you tried to play.

It's a shame, because it is a nice selection of songs, but it turns the beautiful tropical music into a kitschy tiki lounge experience instead.

Bought this CD for a Caribbean themed party I was hosting. The music is great if you want to put everyone to sleep! Its like that background music you hear in the elevator! If I could give this C.D. 10 stars - I would! This is our favorite summer pool party music. Every track is fabulous! We even play this when it's just the family having hamburgers on the deck. It transports you to a breezy caribbean island with swaying palm trees. Okay, so it's just in your head, but man, this is a fun C.D.

This was expected to be 2 CDs of Steel Drums.
Instead, one of the CDs has no steel drums, just some stuff I was not interested about.

I'm very disappointed, thinking this was their way of getting rid of an unwanted CD, by packaging with something more interesting.

This cover band does a great job with some old Caribbean classics! I enjoy the songs "River of Babylon" and "One Love". The steel band version of Guantanamera is terrific... but my all time favorite is cut #6 "Barbados"!!! It starts with the pilot from Coconut airways and the sound of a plane taking off! It's alot of fun and worth buying for that song alone... this CD is definately worth it!

I have really enjoyed Harry Belafonte's Cd! As a kid, we always played these songs at gatherings and party's. I have not owned a recent copy of these old favorites and I was thrilled to be able to order the CD and have it arrive in time for my family gathering of 80 people! Us 12 kids, husbands, wives and all the nieces and nephews thoroughly enjoyed singing and dancing to our old favorites. Thanks, Amazon for making our party an even bigger success! The sound and quality of the CD are great!

Ultimate Collection with Harry Belafonte is an amazing collection from a true crooner of calypso and island folk music. He has an amazing vocal ability and the lyrics for his tracks are quite well done and never sound forced or phony. It is true that most of the tracks are not written by Belafonte himself. However, still takes nothing from this collection of amazing island and calypso tracks such as Banana boat, Mary's boy child and many other nice tracks that are amazing to listen to and if one has a decent vocal abilities (like I do) then they are fun to sing as well. The book-let looks cheap but the photo is nice and shows Belafonte looking suave. This is a great summer album whilst drinking some gin and tonic.

I been searching for years for a song on this CD. A wonderful collection of Belafonte classics and some more obscure recordings. I really enjoy his version of some old folk songs.

like the others, i like the album version way better. however, this version was enjoyable for me as well. i am not big on live albums, and there are very few that i will give a positive response to. this one is one of them.

Having owned the 1959 "In Living Stereo" version on vinyl, I admit, the CD version does have it's shortcomings but it offers a decent compromise for the modern audience to hear Belafonte. Don't be tempted to cull the entire CD just because it's missing a few songs. The "best of" the Carnegie concerts are included on this CD.

For we purist's, we already know that LP was (is) the superior format and modern technology simply can not be the silver bullet replacement for everything. The original LP, burned to CD, with all of the interludes and chit chat runs almost 100 minutes and well beyond the capacity of just one disc.

Certainly, RCA considerded this when selecting the album for re-release but common sense must prevail and business decisions must be made. Just be thankful they still have the master tapes. They (the record companies) are in business to make money and do so with the least effort possible...that way they can pay multi-million dollar contracts to keep the franchise alive with the "Britney Spears'" and "Snoop-Dogs" of today.

This, incidentially, has always held true...it's all about money albeit this recording was for charity. As mentioned by others, these particular concert excerpts were recorded on April 19th & 20th, 1959 at Carnegie Hall. The concerts were put on as benefit fund raisers for two schools. The April 19th show was for The New Lincoln School and the April 20th show was for the Wiltwyck School for emotionally disturbed boys.

Belafonte's singing contributed $58,000 on one night alone for the Wiltwyck boys school. WOW! $58,000 a n d in 1959...more than the average worker's salary nearly 50 years later in 2007.

In short, If you want the complete LP as released, be prepared for a double CD pack or dust off the record player and revive that vinyl. And all that still cannot capture the "entire" 2 night's worth of entertainment. ...even the original wasn't the COMPLETE CONCERT as advertised in 1959.

The other reviews mention the four missing songs, but don't mention that some cuts (in particular, Matilda) were shortened, and that most of the patter between the songs was eliminated. On the original album, Belafonte explains the history of "Saints" and as an alternative sings it as an old English madrigal. Priceless.

One of the main reasons I still maintain a turntable is to play this album. The CD can't measure up.

There's one thing I love about reading amazon reviews. Now I know what I didn't know, that there was a lot missing from the CD release of Live at Carnegie Hall.

This is one CD I've always gone back to, simply because it's neat. I named my first bird Sylvie because when she rode home with me for the first time she thought that song was so lovely that she sang along. Mama Look a Boo Boo, Man Smart (Woman Smarter), John Henry, and the delightful audience involvement in Matilda.... love it. Really I do.

Now all the reviewers (admittedly older than my tender years) have wised me up to the fact that not only are some of Belafonte's songs missing, but the rest of the evening's entertainment is missing as well. I find that to be a shame. I wish I had been there. I'm sure the night was magical, and I bet the record was better.

This CD though... I'll be honest, I still get a big kick out of it. And I'd buy a more faithful remastering of the originals, just in case there are some record producers out there reading the reviews.

A superb taking of a superb artist in a superb mood. Need a say moore?

If you only plans to own five CDs this must be one of them. Mr Bellafonte at his absolute best. I enjoy every second of this CD. Not only is it musically outstanding but it is also a true high fidelity record.

A CD not only for easy listening but also for true listening sessions!

Tracks flow into each other with no "silence" between; its just like the "Living Stereo" black vinyl Long-Play records. All of the content on the LPs is indeed here. Awesome.

Sound quality is quite good. CDs were issued in Germany in 1993 (performance dates were 19 & 20 April 1959). There are no markings on the CDs indicating remixing, remastering or other processing. Despite this, the sound is a little more "natural" than my LP transfer which had that circa-1959 bass richness. This may be just coloration in my turntable set-up and the CD gets it right. There is minor tape hiss in the background noise. The dynamic range may have been increased. The CD allows me to hear more in the music than I ever heard before (musican banter, HB's breathing etc).

The CDs are a great replacement to the LPs transfers I had on my iPod. (I'm not sure yet if I'll miss the ticks and pops from the needle. It was kinda cool on an iPod.)

Regarding musicality; the other reviews have said it all. I agree that this is one of those rare recordings where everything is perfect. It is unthinkable that this concert could even have one second edited from it. I love this concert. It is genius.

Harry Belafonte, is on of the greatest, most influential man ever born in the United States, as well as a hero to the world as well as to all Americans. Mr. Belafonte, World WarII veteren, who volunteered and was on the battlefield, and still serves his nation and the World, with his international travel on behalf of Unicef.
As far as his totally unique talent, this magnificant talent, shows all of his power, his heart, soul and love for all humanity with the best live album ever created.
I have a sentimental feeling about the famous Carnegie Hall concert since I grew up in blue collar family in Brooklyn attended this show. Growing up, I used th hear my parents play this many times on weekends, while doing their chores and nothingw ould light up their faces, create laughter, got them to sing, more than when they listened to the album of this Carnegie Hall concert.
I was about eleven or so when I started hearing it, and I have the album about memorized and grew up loving the album, Mr. Belafonte, his talent, his incredibly diverse careers, and non-stop dedication to all of humanity.
There is comments by an individual who does live the CD about how Harry did "novelty songs" in the second act. THOSE ARE NOT NOVELTY SONGS, THEY ARE FOLK SONGS FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD. But I guess to an American, International folk music is a "novelty song". Grrr. I know the gentlemen who made that comment meant no harm, but I hope it is understood. Mr Belafonte is currently and has previously spent his life unfolding the cultures of nations from all over the world by singing and giving publicity to the great folk music that tells the story of the people of the world.

It is great that this import has the entire concert, but I have to admit that I am ashamed as an American, that it has to be AN IMPORT, that no American music company has taken the original tapes, re-mastered it with love as they would any major piece of history and re-released it. He was born in Harlem and is one of the great, great stories of someone who has lived the American dream. Please remember the racism he experienced as well as being blacklisted suring the McCarthy hearings. But nothing stops his optomism and love of humanity.

He talent is unequaled and no one delivers a folk song with more power, heart and soul.
Besides, he probably was the best guest the Muppets ever had.

A couple of quick pieces of info on Mr. Belafonte. Bob Dylan was recorded for the first time on a Harry Belafonte album, where Harry hired him as a harmonica player.
Mr. Belafonte is a graduate of the Actors Studio in N.Y. the produced a generation of great actors.
Calypso was the first album to sell 1 million copies, but how many people know that he followed that album up with a album where he read and discussed the works of the great American writer, Mark Twain.

Thank you Harry for this great album and the great memories you leave me listening to it and the great pleasure you gave to my late parents.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Just Wild About Harry (Belafonte)!.......2006-02-04

Nowadays the "powers that be" (read: "murderous thugs within the Bush Administration")are on a campaign to depict Harry Belafonte as being mentally unstable. Why? Because he had the courage to point out the all-too-obvious fact that George W. Bush and the dirty old dingbats around him are the biggest sources of world instability since Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.

It's nice to know that he's still Harry after all these years; Still holding up a mirror to a sick and hypocritical society that obviously doesn't like what's reflected.

Belafonte At Carnegie Hall, recorded on two nights in April of 1959 is, no doubt about it, the finest "Live" album ever recorded. All these years later it still has a freshness that is irresistable. The fact that it was recorded with state-of-the-art equipment, you can close your eyes and it's almost as if your sitting, front row. It's moving and riotously funny all at the same time. Trust me on this one kiddies, you won't be disappointed!

I grew up with this album that my parents had, unfortunately I recalled it as Belafonte RETURNS to Carnegie Hall. Thankfully I ordered this first, then later got Harry Returns (basically for Odetta and Miriam Makeba).

The man is brilliant in concert and it is unbelieveable they were daring enough to try to record these performances live. I shudder to think anyone currently who could pull this off (with the exception of Midler who thrives on a live audience).

Does Belafonte have an incredible voice and fantastic range? Not really. He has a great voice but the man has PASSION and intelligence in his hip pocket and he presents a priceless show.

It's amazing to me, now, to realize what a global attitude this man has, did I mention passion and intelligence? So I did, but it's well worth repeating.

I played this album for a 7th grade class and they ape over it -- they knew two songs from the movie Beetle Juice and insisted I download the lyrics. When it came time for Cucurrucucu Paloma they went wild (and the staff freaked when they heard it was a live performance) so I knew Mama Look a Boo Boo would be appreciated.

I know Mr. Belafonte is known and loved for many of his standards (basicaly Day-O) but I my faorite piece will always be Merci Bon Dieu. It's so beautiful, it's heartbreaking in a wonderful way.

I hate live albums because most artists cannot do live what they create in the studio. Not so with this -- he sounds even better live. A truly talented man with intelligence and passion -- darn, that's rare and very much appreciated, especially in the year 2005.

I think Belafonte's music is great, really great. And this compilation is fine, but I wanted to warn to anyone considering buying this disc that -in a way I can only describe as absurd and unbelievable- it has the same song TWICE on this very album/CD. As you will note if you read the list of songs, number 2 is "Banana Boat Song", and number 11 is "Day O"; so we have his biggest hit duplicate (and it's the very same version, the original). That added to the fact that it has only 14 (well, 13) songs with a lot of space that could be filled, make me not recommend it even for beginners. Try another compilation to begin with, like All Time Greatest Hits, Vol. 1, or the 3CD box set Banana Boat Song. And it is essential The Concert at Carnegie Hall (the first one) but, again, NOT the american version but the import edition in a double disc set (which is complete and totally worthy).

I have been looking for some of these songs forever. However one of my all time favorite Belefonte records is "Love Is a Gentle Thing" please, please please put this out in CD.
Scarlet Ribbons and Turn Around are just a taste of what is on that wonderful record.

My husband and I also have been trying to find what we think are among the 2 best Belafonte lps we have - "Love is a Gentle Thing" and "In My Quiet Room". There are so many albums of his with duplicate songs - we just wish his promoters would let us buy these special two. We still have 15+ of his lps with non-dupe pieces we would love to find in collections without getting ones with 95% songs we already have on them.

I was looking for music for an island theme party. The selection looked fun -- a lot of recognizable summer party songs with the steel drum flair. But then I bought it and actually listened to it. The steel drum parts are really good; however, the synthesized accompaniment is over powering and really cheesy (it sounds like it should be on Barney). Please, save your money and look elsewhere.

We listen to this CD while we are swimming in the pool or just hanging out with neighbors on our deck. It is great background music and makes you feel like you are on vacation.
