German 60s pop, watered down.......2007-03-23

I really enjoy krautrock, bands like Can, Amon Duul, Embryo, Guru Guru, etc. The only song I knew by this band, was THE WITCH, which is their biggest hit. THE WITCH is a very catchy pop song from 1969, lots of guitar, reverbed drenched lead guitar, overdubbed witch laughter, bizarre string charts, thick harmonies, etc. Ever since i first heard the song i wanted to buy it, but the RATTLES BEST OF collections were always too expensive. Then, this very inexpensive collection came along, and I thought, "Why Not?". Well, if you check out the songs on this 2CD set, against the songs on their sixties singles collections, maybe you can tell what the problem is. First off, you DO get some fun songs on here from the sixties, including a couple from their 1963-1965 years. THE RATTLES sort of sound like THE ANIMALS crossed with MOODY BLUES. I guess they were trying to recreated that British Invasion sound. The later stuff (THE WITCH was from 1969) is psychedelic pop music. NOT psychedelic rock, like the early CAN music, or XHOL CARAVAN, or the handful of other early german krautrock experimenters. (I dont think a single song goes past 3 minutes.) But still, you can sort of hear elements of AMON DUUL II's pop sound, in the handful of psychedelic numbers from THE RATTLES late sixties numbers. Now, the problem is that about a third of the songs, are from the early 80s. ITs very jarring, to move from 1964 greasy blues and psychedelic production numbers from the late 60s, to these cheesey "NEW WAVE" attempts. The songs like HOT WHEELS, and the other mid 80s numbers, have that over amped SNARE drum sound. (I think its a drum machine.) Plus, you have that 80s horrible synth pad sound. Yuk. The sixties stuff at least had a good hammond organ. Their 80s guitar sound doesnt sound very original either. I suppose that the 60s songs, in their own way, might be a little trite too, but at least the production sound for those psychedelic songs from that era, is fun to hear. In the end, I can only say that I would recommend this 2 CD set, for anyone that wants to hear what this band is about, without putting out tons of money. If you add together the good cuts from the two CDs, you will get at least one BEST OF CD that will have a few songs on it you'd like. The price is right, being so budget minded. Still, I'd rather have a CD of just their best numbers from the late sixties, and two or three of the early 60s songs, without the bar band versions of songs like SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES and THE GREAT PRETENDER, done with drum machines and synths. So, this is for GERMAN ROCK MUSIC COMPLETISTS ONLY. OR, if you need that song THE WITCH, and cant find it any other way. (I fall into the second catagory.)

It's old stuff, pulled from the bins, but if you like the blues (and I do), you'll probably enjoy it. The downers are that there's not much "Clapton" to this and the recording quality isn't always top notch.
