Not the original artists. Very weak versions of beloved songs by marginal to downright bad vocalists.

Pretty good musical mix.......2006-03-10

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Love me sweet, pretty baby.......2005-01-27

In "A Grand Love Story," producer Kid Loco (real name: Jean Yves Prieur) has created the perfect downtempo album. His French trip-hop is laid-back and airy, but much warmer and sunnier than most such albums. Things get a bit odd in the middle, but it's never boring and never too strange.

It opens with the gently ambient "A Grand Love Theme," and follows up with gentle trip-hop and guitar-laced pop music. But things start to get a little eerie in "Bootleggers," a wavery little song that becomes darker and a bit more surreal, with horns and the occasional odd clatter.

"Calling Aventura King" is slower and more ambiguous -- it has warm, soft notes woven in the essentially cold beats. And "Sister Curare" is a patchwork of odd samples. Things shift back into warmer climes with "She's My Lover (A Song For R.)," an exotic little tune that brings us back into the realm of warm chill-out music.

That arc is what makes the album so intriguing, since it keeps listeners from predicting what the next song will sound like. It's a bit like walking into a haunted house on a sunny day, and walking back out into the sun at the end. On that note, "Grand Love Story," ends with the gently spacey "Cosmic Supernatural," which reminds one of watching the stars while listening to the radio.

There's a warm pastoral flavor to "Grand Love Story," as if Kid Loco is driving you through the countryside. These are truly beautiful pop songs, and they show Loco's exceptional skill as a downtempo artist, whether it's happily stoned pop, ghostly trip-hop, or warm ambience.

Some of the songs are almost completely constructed of sampling, although in songs like "Relaxin' With Cherry" the gentle guitar line and mellow drumming ties it all together. Prieur also contributes some faint vocals, and Katrina Mitchell of the Pastels gives a pretty guest performance in "Love Me Sweet." She sounds a little uncertain as she sings to a quiet percussion backdrop, although even that is charming to hear.

"A Grand Love Story" is perhaps the perfect example of a chillout trip-hop album, without a single dull song and with plenty of little tweaks to keep things interesting. Absolutely wonderful.

Quaint, not grand, love story.......2003-04-02

Due to sample clearance problems, A Grand Love Story never received a full domestic release, arriving heavily edited with half the original songs snipped out. Hence, Kid Loco's countrified take on smoked out, chilled beats (I dub thee twang-hop) slowly garnered buzz as a regrettably missed classic.

Which it's not. Though it has plenty of idyllic charm, complete with twinkling skies ("Calling Aventura King") and fluttering instrumentals ("The Bootleggers") laced with acoustic guitar and fleshed out with the usual orchestral nods. The addition of Katrina Mitchell's tender voice, highlighted with the indellible "Love Me Sweet," adds emotional resonance to this starry-eyed soundtrack.

Unfortunately, dialogue samples and moaning women - ten years cliché even back then - make unwanted appearances, notably on "Sister Curare" and "She's My Lover." It's a blotch over his sumptuous programming, and a mild lament; If Kid Loco would have let the music speak for itself, A Grand Love Story might have been indeed been a classic.

French Countryside Trip-Hop.......2003-01-04

Kid Loco's debut solo effort is very rewarding. The middle of the album gets a little forced and odd, but the beginning and the end are fabulous. A sonic journey through love, the opening track, "A Grand Love Theme," is astonishing in its blend of almost classical sounding melody and phat beat underneath. "Relaxin' with Cherry" has a wonderful, carefree guitar riff that relaxes you even with the quick beat lain overtop. When the beat does come in after a minute, it is one of those moments that are worth an entire album just to get to. After that, it kind of falls apart, but "She Woolf Daydreaming" picks up any and all the slack. Once you can get over the disarming love moans, it is a beautiful, enchanting song. It segues into "Alone Again So," the end of which is fantastic. "Cosmic Supernatural" ends the album with a feeling that everything is right in the world. I do not regret the money I paid to purchase this import album.

A gateway drug, nothing more, nothing less. .......2007-03-11

To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.

This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying destructions of the universality of the works and the intentions of the artist behind it, I am willing to give this collection another chance, since classical music is somewhere between Arabic and wine in degree of unmanageability. It also helps that all the tunes are familiar to almost every one of us, and the fact that the artists' intentions probably got killed by the hundreds of different conductors trying to convey their personal interpretation of the works.

What I am saying is that this CD can be to classical music enthusiast what 'absolute rock' can be to a rock enthusiast, or to someone slightly interested, with no conceptual frames of where to start the search for knowledge. "Best Classics 100" offers nothing except a selection of melodies where there's bound to be one for every taste, but where the album feeling, the entirety or completeness intended by the composer, or conductor, or performer is completely lost in a trade-off made with variety.

The collection is attempted organised by giving each CD a different theme, supposedly to describe the mood of the music, and the labeller succeeds only to a limited extent as we move from themes such as 'uplifting' and 'relaxing' towards 'golden'. I wonder what that golden feeling constitutes. It apparently is to be found in, amongst others, "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde", and in "My Heart Will Go On"?

But no matter how I try to describe this CD it will sound worse than it actually is. This because to me it works as a great reference to which I can always turn with my classical music questions. Was it Schumann or Schubert who were the sad one? Of all the -inis, which where which again? Who composed "O Mio Babbino Caro"? The starting point for finding out if you belong to the romantic or the renascence wing, lies within this assemblage, if you look with your ears.

If you feel that classical music is something you like, and you'd like to learn more about it, this is a way to get started. If used together with a book on classical music, or wikipedia, it can be a gateway drug, leading you towards the great different experiences to be found within the different genres of classical music, and within the different periods ranging from the 12th century, maybe even earlier, towards yesterdays and tomorrows spectacular compositions of melodies that conveys a feeling, a state of mind with much more precision than any other musical genre. Expect a fairly alright collection of classical prunes, and you won't be disappointed.

Decent Selection, But..........2005-04-21

...The Audio Quality is really not great. I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great! 100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good. I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
I then played the CD's through my home stereo, with the same results. I plugged in my SHURE E5c headphones and the sound was soft, uninviting, lacking punch, with significant backgound noise (not just from the headphones), which was especially distracting when the music would get softer. I have heard much of the music before, and it was much more dynamic, entertaining, this recording seems too flat.
The music selection is ok, but I was hoping for some more interesting selections from the vast classical genre.
Overall, not that great of a recording, but many might not notice the difference, so if you are new to classical or aren't like an audiophile, get this album because it's a great overview of pop-culture classical, and it's pretty inexpensive.

A must-have classical music set!.......2005-01-06

Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away!

Prelude to "Love".......2005-05-09

It's a bit deceptive to call this remix collection "Prelude To A Grand Love Story," since it remixes several songs from Kid Loco's exceptional "Grand Love Story" album. How can you have the remix "prelude" to an album, if the album's content is remixed?

And while it isn't quite as good as that legendary chillout album, this is still an excellent accompaniment to the original. Much better, in fact, than most remix albums are.

Evidently "Love Me Sweet" is a favorite: There are four different mixes of that song on here. The Original Radio Mix is an enchantingly mellow song, while the St. Etienne Remix is a sparkling, music-box remix, the Jim O'Rouke Remix hass a weird, dark, tripped-out reggae beat, and the Tommy Hools Remix has a murky, acid-jazzy sound.

"She's My Lover" gets two mixes: the exquisite Original Mix, and the meandering prettiness of the Bang Bang Remix. "Relaxin' With Cherry" also gets two remixes: the eerie guitar-laden Gak Sato Pre-Echo Mix, and the clubby dancey beats of the Dimitri from Paris+Bibi Remix, which is twelve minutes long. And there's also "Sister Curare," a chillout tune that sounds like the descent of drum-playing aliens.

I was lucky enough to find "Grand Love Story" is a discount "used" bin, though I can't imagine why someone would get rid of it. And since remix albums are usually a disappointment -- or at least a mixed bag -- "Prelude" was a pleasant surprise, a remix album that is a good addition to the original collection.

Perhaps the most enjoyable thing is that these remixes (for the most part) preserve the unique flavour of Kid Loco's original recordings, albeit with more drums or beats.The one exception might be "Relaxin' With Cherry (Dimitri from Paris+Bibi Remix)," which is extremely generic. It could have been done by pretty much anybody.

Despite the dud final track, "Prelude To A Grand Love Story" is a solid collection of Kid Loco remixes, and a good accompaniment to the "Grand Love Story." Well worth getting, if you have heard the original.

Prelude is generically a number of remixes, For example 'She's my lover' appears on A Grand Love Story. Kid Loco as usual remixes up to top standard. Personally I would go for A Grand Love Story.

This is my first kid loco cd to buy, I'm satisfied... I didn't get to hear much of it before I bought it... it kind of has a touch of reggae in it... but other than that it's pretty hoppy... it sounds like music that I would put as a score for a movie... thank you for your time..

"Fly With Me" is an unabashedly romantic collection of piano solos and ensemble pieces by pianist/composer Esteban Ramirez. There are some keyboard washes, but most of the additional instruments are "real," and include oboe, cello, and violin. Warmly optimistic from start to finish, the pieces are melodic and very easy to listen to both in the foreground and background. Calling the CD "like a soundtrack to a love story, " not all of the pieces are full of sunshine. There are a few bumps in the musical road, but most of them are small. About half of the twelve tracks are solo piano, and even though the ensemble work is beautiful, I really like the solo pieces best.

The CD opens with "Promise," which has the fresh innocence of "The Feather Theme" from "Forrest Gump." "Alone Is Not For Me" is a gorgeous piano solo full of passion and yet reflective - a bit of soul-searching at the piano. "The Embrace" sounds like the perfect movie theme for a great love story, full of grace and emotional energy with strings and oboe behind the piano. "Love and Moonlight" is one of the solos, and is so gentle and serene. It is easy to imagine lovers doing a slow dance on a warm evening surrounded by stars and soft moonlight. "Tonight You Shine" is a tender love song that is again sweet and serene. "A Dream Is Not Enough" reminds me a bit of Kevin Kern - strings, oboe, and an uplifting message. "I Am Stronger Now," the closing piece, is a bit more complex and introspective. Again very emotional and expressive, Ramirez' passion communicates very deeply. Made up of several sections or movements, this piece is gorgeous. "Fly With Me" is a very enjoyable CD full of touching moments and deep emotion.

I'm not sure why this time and not others, but I have been listening to your new CD to and from work for the past two weeks and I just love it...it transforms my mood to one of optimism and joy! Another work of Esteban's that has filled me with joy and peace. As Esteban knows, I have all of his cd's by my bedside and listen to them nightly while going to sleep. His musical talents are known by my friends around the world as far as away as Thailand and Indonesia. My grandmother recently received Fly With Me as a birthday gift and mentioned that she felt so relaxed after listening to his cd. Spoken from a woman who does has never really known the meaning of "relaxation." Good Job, Esteban!

Music takes flight.......2003-10-24

Esteban has a style and feeling of playing that makes you think you are actually hearing him play live, in the same room. This album conveys the "heart" he brings to the music. Even the titles of each selection are meaningful. This is a cd to keep handy for listening again and again.

The music is so quietly powerful, each passage carried me forward so gently to a wonderful peaceful feeling when it ended. Great for meditation. I will feel blessed evertime I play this CD.

Dennis O'Neill is a wonderfully sensitive, intelligent singer--a tenor who varies his tone and delivery for each character. He also sings the music as written, with every dynamic shading in place. Yes, he manages high B-flats pianissimo without resorting to falsetto, and he also rises somewhat heroically to heavier moments. But there's a rub. The loud, high notes are a bit nasty--a slight wobble comes into the voice and a sense of strain is more than noticeable. His exquisite, piano beginning of "O paradiso" ("Oh land of dreams") from L'Africaine is only a sad memory when you hear the vaguely bawled high notes throughout. His "Reve" from Manon is lovely in its sustained peacefulness, and while he's very exciting in the big Act II duet from Ballo (with soprano Susan Bullock as a fine Amelia), there are always those unfortunate "big" notes to reckon with. Perhaps that's why the gorgeous Pearl Fishers duet, with baritone Anthony Michaels-Moore, ends the program so successfully. The soft notes are more prominent than the troublesome forte ones. Perhaps this is being too picky--O'Neill is a worthy singer, he makes these arias and scenes palatable in translation (even Alvaro's music from Forza is believable), and artistry like this is a pleasure to come across. --Robert Levine

I have long been a fan of duo piano teams, and Ihave to say that this team, Pierce and Jonas is just, WOW! especially the way they performed Slaughter on 10th Avenue and Candide (one of my favorite Bernstein musicals.) The other arrangements, well, I can hear vocals when I listen to them. especialy when listening to the "La Cage" medley.
