5 out of 5 stars Fantastic! (Plastic. Machine.).......2007-04-01

What a great album! Every song is so quality-drowned. I can't believe it!

5 out of 5 stars ironic electronica = ironica?.......2005-05-14

Fantastic Plastic Machine is the latest project of Japanese electronica wunderkind Tomoyuki Tanaka. In 'Luxury', Tanaka takes elements like 50s movie themes, children's tv show themes, elevator music, instructional audio, and reblends them against catchy beats, turning what was once mundane into something wonderful. Often the songs manage to be musically ironic, mocking the drama and triteness of pop music and advertising themes through the 20th century.

My favorite songs on the album are the unexpectedly perky Theme Of Luxury, the terribly catchy You Must Learn All Night long, and the thoroughly bizzarre and mesmerizing I've Forgotten My Fagotto.

Overall this is a fun and listenable album, great for at-work background music or dance music for a party. I'd love to see more albums like this one, and I'd love to see ironic electronica become its own genre.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2004-04-05

Fantastic Plastic Machine has got it all; the super cool 60's style of Pizzicato Five, with insanity equal to that of Takako Minekawa or Kiego Oyamada (AKA "Cornelius). Tracks like "Electric Lady Land" and "You Will Learn All Night Long" make you want to rush outside, and dance. Or blow bubbles; actually, probably blow bubbles while dancing, only to realize just how difficult it is to blow bubbles while dancing, but you wont care. No, you wont care at all. This album will make your head explode, and you'll enjoy every second of it.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled By "Theme of Luxury".......2002-07-12

Because this is an obscure album in an obscure genre, most listeners are probably attracted to this album after hearing "Theme of Luxury," which was featured in a recent car commercial. "Theme" is a 3-minute acid-jazz masterpiece, one-half Vince Guaraldi on speed (frantic but melodic piano, deep but swinging percussion) and one-half latter day Copeland. The rest of the album, however, is so different that it might as well be a different artist. Think of hip-hop/dance music that samples '50s lounge albums. "He Became a Beatnik" and "You Must Learn All Night Long" contain some funky Moby-does-jazz elements, and make this disc an interesting (even enjoyable) listen, but don't be fooled by "Theme of Luxury."

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff, Maynard........2001-02-27

Not as good as the self-titled "Fantastic Plastic Machine" album, but good nonetheless. The second track (...Angel...), is hypnotic; worth buying the CD for, in my opinion. If you like Towa Tei and smooth beats, you'll probably like this one.

One-man music machine and cultural trendsetter Tomoyuki Tanaka (a.k.a. Plastic Fantastic Machine) is back in a big sassy way with his third release, Beautiful. Other than an overall mellowing of PFM's occasionally over-amped arrangements, the biggest surprise on Beautiful is the generous use of strings that make the record a bit of an odd duck, more appropriate for the boudoir than the dance floor. In fact, only the endlessly spunky "Take Me to the Disco" is a bona fide dance track here. Otherwise, Beautiful moves through a record collector's dream that includes the super-sophisticated, string-driven groove of "On a Chair," the fluty Latin jazz of "Whistle Song," the lazy, jazzy funk of "Black Dada," and the insanely overarranged spoken-word hoedown "Love Is Psychedelic." But despite all the musical territory covered there's a real cohesion to the whole affair; it's distinctly urban and hip without being pushy about it, with a sly sense of humor riding just under the surface. Occasionally Tanaka's broad palette gets a bit overloaded, with the strings going in one direction and the groove another, but for the most part he manages to pull it all together in a balancing act that both Burt Bacharach and Howie B could be proud of, and that's really saying something. --Carl Hanni

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, but bad order of songs.......2005-11-26

Truly very cool music this dude is talented, he takes from the 70's sound a bit actually although that's not a bad thing at least I think. Now the order he put the songs in flows well although he put the better tacks at the start & end, so he put all of the less outstanding songs in the middle which did not sit well to much ( although not that much). First disc I have picked up by Fantastic Plastic Machine and i'm getting all of his other one's

Very Addictive

4 out of 5 stars Trendy but appealing.......2005-10-13

The eclectic but funky tracks on this album are perfect for drives, parties, and pure listening pleasures. The best tracks here, aside from the title song, are "I'm Still A Simple Man" and "God Save the Mona Lisa," both sung by Bob Dorough--better known for his song "I'm Just a Bill" of Schoolhouse Rock. An odd choice, but one that works. Accessible and recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Unapologetically fun music.......2004-08-01

I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I purchased this CD but I certainly didn't expect how much fun it would be. You should be warned: this is silly, light-hearted, danceable music with a couple of slower, more thoughtful tracks mixed in.
It's really well produced with so many discrete music elements popping up all over the sound stage that it feels like a party in your head.:)

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic........2004-04-15

Tomoyuki Tanaka, AKA "Fantastic Plastic Machine" has once again produced an amazing musical masterpiece.
From the amazing "One Minute of Love" to the smooth "Whistle Song", Tomoyuki will fill your heart with love. I am almost certain that after hearing this album, you will want to give this man a very sizeable smooch.

Tanaka follows the Pizzicato Five trend with "Love is Psychadelic" in having an english speaker sing the lyrics, however it quickly turns hilarious as the words given to the deep speaking, slightly monotonic speaker turn more and more bizzare. ("Then, this guy finally got completely out of me, turned out to be a foot long shining chunk of light, and it was just floating in front of me.
In the next moment, this guy, well I mean this chunk of my love for you, started flying up to the celing slowly, then smashed into the mirror-ball hanging there.
Then it fell apart with it's intense flash, it became thousands millions of dots of lights, expanding to all over the place, and then started spinning around with the music.
But, the next thing I knew, I got back to myself. Was it an illusion? Or, was it real? Oh, by the way, I might have drank too much...")

The only unfortunate thing about this album is that some songs sound less than that Fantastic Plastic Machine everyone knows and loves and more like something you would find while browsing the disgusting fashion encrusted isles of the GAP.

All in all, this album is amazing with simply some minor musical missteps.

3 out of 5 stars A Very Odd Duck Indeed.......2001-11-09

(...) Personally, I find it very disappointing after FPM's previous album, "Luxury". "Beautiful" harnesses saccharine strings, anonymous vocals and odd rhythmic structures to generally poor melodies, resulting in music that twitches constantly without really engaging the listener; several of the tracks sound more like experiments with software than songs. The lyrics are generally silly and nonsensical without being funny or witty. As someone who usually enjoys what could be termed JapPop I find "Beautiful" an ambitious but unsatisfying addition to the canon.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Album..........2007-02-09

As soon as this album arrived, I listened to it all the way through. There are some truly outstanding tracks on here--"Fanfare" featuring Tahiti 80 is truly inspired. "Don't you Know" featuring Clazziquai project is the song that *made* me buy this album. "Take me Away" featuring Ugly Duckling will be stuck in your head for days--truly catchy. I highly recommend this album, especially to fans of Fantastic Plastic Machine's previous work!

A very different compilation. "Night & Day" by Everything But The Girl - hauntingly cool. "A Dream Goes On Forever" - resurrected decently. Give 'er a listen, it's not for everybody, but if you "get it" it's relatively unique.
