4 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2006-06-06

The Prodigy were a great singles band and the proof is in this compilation which contains basically everything a casual fan would want. I have to take a star off though for a couple of reasons. First, the non-inclusion of "Fire" and "Baby's Got A Temper" is a shame and secondly, the version of "Poison" on here must be a single mix or something because it's not the version I remembered from Music For The Jilted Generation (the intro isn't as good).

Overall a good compilation and a good substitute for their albums, which can be a bit tiring at times if you're not a fan of the genre generally.

5 out of 5 stars They did that???.......2006-05-25

This collection really drives home the reality that The Prodigy solidified and invented much of what we hear in today's dance music. It's based solidly on the rave movement of the late 80s, then goes beyond that. Reminiscent of Drum and Bass sometimes, Hardcore, and their music is, of course, a predecessor to the modern breakbeat sounds we hear coming out of Europe and Florida. This is a classic collection from a classic electronic group that deserves attention.

5 out of 5 stars I am feeling old.............2006-03-22

My daughter is 17 years old and she asked me about this album and I told her "BUY IT". I listened with her and it reminded me of my rave days back in the UK. It is awesome dance music. I didn't feel that it had aged all that much, it still sounded pretty fresh.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Album. .......2006-03-21

As a huge fan of The Prodigy, it's hard to find the right way to review this phenomenal collection. Do I review it as a fan or as a casual music lover? Because this album spans their entire career I think it's necessary that this review also span what brought us to this point at least.
Most Americans only have a passing knowledge or memory of the Prodigy when they seemingly invaded MTV and the radio airwaves in the late nineties with their monster hits "Firestarter", "Breathe", and the hugely controversial "Smack My Bitch Up". If you haven't heard of them since, it's not your fault. Following the milestone release of "Fat of the Land", which went number one in forty countries, The Prodigy went into a long hibernation. Prior to "The Fat of The Land", however, The Prodigy made a name for themselves in the underground rave scene of the late eighties and early nineties with the 1992 release of "Experience", followed by the hugely successful "Music for the Jilted Generation" which featured, what many consider the Prodigy's calling card, the single 'Voodoo People', made popular by the cult film "Hackers".
In 2002, seemingly out of nowhere, The Prodigy released the single "Baby's Got A Temper" and it seemed that after a five-year absence, the Prodigy were back in form. That single, however, was to be the last gasp of a dying era. Leading man Liam Howlett (not the guy with the horns) decided that particular single to be his 'wake up call' that a change was due. Not content with trying to rehash the success of "Fat of the Land" with a sequel, Liam scrapped the work he had done on a follow up album and started anew, sans vocalists Keith Flint (the one with the horns) and Maxim.
After a seven-year hiatus, "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" was released in late 2004 with hardly any American publicity. The album was poorly received by most, being a spiritually solo effort on the part of Liam Howlett with only a handful of outside collaborators, it was perhaps a departure from what many expected from the mad mind who unleashed "Fat of the Land" upon the world. That sentiment, however, is a testament to the essence of The Prodigy. Unlike other bands who are content with treading on the same waters of success, The Prodigy have always forced themselves to evolve and push the envelope and that is precisely what keeps their fans coming back for more after sixteen years.
"Their Law: The Singles" is a mix of many styles and genres that are almost impossible to define or categorize. You shouldn't try either. The music is daring and wild and truly inspired. From the rave era classics "Out of Space" and "Charly", to the sinister, hip hop inspired favorite "Poison", all the way to the recent World War 3 inspired epic "Spitfire", you really cannot find a single boring track. The one glaring omission from the album, "Baby's got a Temper", is missed, but in the grand scheme of things, The Prodigy present to us their proudest efforts. Disc two features two new tracks, various b-sides, a few unreleased remixes, and a taste of what the Prodigy can do as a live act with four live recorded tracks. These extras compliment the first disc well and while a casual fan may not realize the significance of the tracks, the second disc is just as hard hitting and furious as the first.
In terms of historical importance, I dare say that The Prodigy are on a level with The Clash as one the most influential bands of our time. If you've never bought a Prodigy record before, buy this album. If you only own "Fat of the Land", buy this album. No matter what kind of music you enjoy, buy this album, put it your home or car stereo, and turn the volume up, all the way up. Let your whole neighborhood hear it. And, if your system is up to par, let them feel it as well. They'll never know what hit them.

5 out of 5 stars Their Law, My Satisfaction.......2006-03-21

It's something unusual for me to buy compilations from my favourite bands; most of the times they are not destined for those who already have the original records and so I generally see it as a waste of money just for a couple of remixes or new tracks you can easily get separately these days; even more unusual is to play compilations for more than a few days... But that's not the case here - I'm listening to Their Law: The Singles for a 2nd week on a row and things tend to carry on like this in the near future.
The look of the box did one part of the job on the store; the presence of a 2nd CD with live material on it did the other. All landmark tracks from The Prodigy can be found on disc 1 - if possible I would only add the rest of the tracks of "The Fat of the Land" but for that is better to get the album, of course... As for disc 2, the remix of "Voodoo People" gives this classic a second life and - speaking about second life, all 5 live-songs are tremendous (Their Law in particular!), raising their original power even further. Excellent compilation!

4 out of 5 stars Metroplex: gateway to an electronic dreamscape........2007-01-12

This is a solid compilation of metroplex releases with the characteristic feel of the label: in some ways cold, aloof, intellectualized electronica initially but as it becomes more familiar it gains a kind of intimate and in some ways sad emotionality which paradoxically then makes it warm and comforting. It is a compilation of great historic interest really as through Cybotron and Model 500 Juan Atkins is the originator of electronic music and alot of the music on this release has served as the backbone and template for most things that have come subsequently in the genre. You can clearly hear the Kraftwerk influences. This music has a substance and integrity which much more recent techno lacks. In many ways it represents creative (and non-commercial) experimentation with very limited predecesors. If you are not familiar with the genre or with early detroit techno in general you may find this release a little inaccesable. The only reason it doesn't get a 5 star rating from me (which it deserves in terms of the quality of the music) is that most of the material has been previously issued on other compilations. When you've been a fan of this type of music for over 15 years like I have the main ingredient you are looking for is a relic from the past that you are not familiar with to recreate the magic.

5 out of 5 stars This collection is truly essential.......2006-04-28

This 2-disc retrospective of the techno godfather himself has been needed for some time. For the first time ever, people curious about the origins of techno have a convenient compilation of Juan Atkin's vast body of work under his aliases such as: Cybotron, Model 500, and Infiniti. I personally place Juan Atkins right up there with Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream as far as influence goes in the field of electronica & dance. With that said, this collection is truly essential!

5 out of 5 stars an excellent introduction to techno.......2005-09-04

I'm a student at Wayne State University in Detroit and have been looking for albums to listen to w/the windows down while cruising down I-96. This is one of them. Juan Atkins is "The Godfather of Techno." Some of these techno tracks are 20 years old and hands down beat anything you hear on the radio or in clubs today. Old school Cybotron beats like "Clear" and "No UFO's" can be listened to and enjoyed ad nauseam. There's not a single bad track here.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Good.......2007-01-18

...sometimes you find an album that you play over and over again but it never gets boring, the more you listen to it the better it gets, you hear more details and wonder - how the f* can you mix THAT live?

_CD1 by Loco Dice - is a solid mix from begining to end, mixed very well - each track flows into next one smootly. I would call it a journey.

_CD2 by Ricardo Villalobos - good too, except the last track, which should not be there because the one before it sounds like it finishes the CD. First 3 tracks are brilliant.

Thanks to technology both CDs sound extra crisp, sounds are deep and full, basses are strongly enriched - you notice that right eway.
People are screaming on the background from time to time, which adds proper mood.

Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-09-29

Wow.. Loco Dice and Ricardo Villalobos on two cds. As soon as I saw that i placed the order. The cover doesn't look very appealing though. CD 1(LOCO DICE) is straight up funky while CD 2 (RICARDO VILLALOBOS) is more spacey and cerebral. I love the way cd2 begins, it just sets the mood for the entire cd, deep and quirky. CD 1 is so groovy, tracks like funky voodoo mama and Perry Rodhan just blew my mind. I wish i wouldve been at that festival.

5 out of 5 stars An overview of the Pop Ambient Series...........2007-05-30

The label "Kompakt" label has been long since well known for it's output of Electronica/Techno, decided in the latter-half of 2000 to release a compilation that showcase not only the broad range of artists on the label (with a few artists licensed to appear on some volumes) , but a chance to compile some of the more subdued, delicate, restrained & intimate nature of the featured artists work. In this case "Ambient techno" with a decidedly accessible and unassuming slant (hence the "Pop Ambient" tag). Following the success of the release of the first "Ambient 2001" edition, every successive year has seen a new release (the most recent volume being "Pop Ambient 2007).

For any preconception of harsh, thumping, or even groove based music when the term "Ambient Techno" is used to describe the general overall genre of these volumes, you have to bear in mind. What each Pop Ambient series deals almost exclusively in, is that tracks don't concern themselves hard edged beats, or driving percussion, and reverberating basslines. And instead focus more, on directionless modal harmonies, and emphasizing densely layered, highly nuanced, and meticulously arranged ambient soundscapes. Which can on one track veers more towards soft gentle swirling synth tones and glistening piano-like melodies, and another track can feature a pastoral guitar strum, with looped piano chords and a sublime mix of bouncy rhythm, and light soundscapes. And other tracks can be dreamy glitch-lite tracks, with the sort of atmospheric drone-like twinkly/crackly shadings, full of radiant, gorgeously low-lit sound. And then have the following track deal an unhurried minimal percussion, working well alongside ethereal, woozy synths
.

Pop Ambient compilations seem to take in a multitude of influences..ranging from: Dub/ Ambient / Techno / Electronica / Glitch/ Electro-house & Soundscape music are all touched upon, explored and interpreted, crossed-referenced in a way that the sound & textures are absolutely compelling, yet the simplicity of the arrangements give this it `Pop' feel. It's not an series of compilations that is there to immediately impress, as it's far too considered and delicate in its approach to have an immediate effect. The spare twinkles of guitar and humming drones, and minimal undulating bass certainly wont have your friends begging you to sell your copy, but taken on it's own terms, and listened to without outside interruption, it's a series of albums that eventually win you over with a vast array of soft thrums, subtle rhythmic structures, meditative pieces, or melodic simple softly fading distant tunes, poignant moods and fractured sounds that skilfully blend deep, granular sound design, with the 4-bar rhythmic intensity, mixed with spare late-night introspective sound of diverting vamps, working alongside tracks which feature nearly imperceptible sparse polyrhythms, in a way that relax in a totally disconcerting manner.

The revolving door approach to each of the releases, ensures that although there is a certain musical aesthetic that each edition of these compilation works and adheres to. The rotation of different artists does give the series new material to work with (although some artist works, do feature throughout the series). I have all the volumes in the series so far (2001 - 2007), and I do find that they're all relatively similar in a lot of aspects, and thus relatively interchangeable. And everyone will probably have their favourite volumes (although a lot of people consider volumes 2002 / 2003 to be the finest volumes), you could probably pick up any one in the series, and have a relatively reasonable idea of what to expect from the other volumes. And for those with a passing interest in this series, then there's probably no way that you really need to buy all volumes...but for me personally, each volume works so beautifully in a downtempo and chilled environment, that for me....I found that each volume worked perfectly for late-nights at home, when the music needs to be low, or just when you fancy listening to something electronic/electronica, but without any driving progression, and just something that locks you into a particular mindset (solitude, introspection, reading, working on the computer, etc...) but I found that the sophisticated, yet relaxed music worked so for well for me, that I ended up grabbing each volume, and never regretting each purchase.

This is probably not something I'd recommend to every one, as there'll be those that are expecting something eclectic, and progressive, and maybe even something that musically takes them places...and those people will be disappointed, with this purchase. Also, there will be some like ambient music, but find the whole exercise (primarily because of the "Pop" tag), a little too accessible and electronic-influenced to really engage. That's fine!!, as this was probably never complied with you in mind. Admittedly this is a series of volumes that takes you nowhere fast.....'But wasn't that the point of Downtempo/Chillout music in the first place??'.

Definately worth the money to buy rather than to download the individual songs. If you are a true fan, then you'll notice how the songs (most not all) are ever so slightly different than the original. They're labeled nothing special, but it's just a little incentive to buy the album. The special edition is well worth the money, the second disc is full of remixes, b-sides, and live reditions. This one is for the fans for sure. Granted Baby's Got a Temper would have been a good addition, but i'm not dissapointed in the album at all.
    Work of art.

3 out of 5 stars great collection but...........2005-12-28

Why did they not include "Baby's Got A Temper" ?
I hate it when collections aren't complete.

4 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Trip Down Memory Lane.......2005-11-02

The Prodigy try to salvage what mass audience they have left to release a compilation of their heydays - and after numerous disappointments recently, they couldn't have released this compilation at a better time. Their Law reminds the listener of the glory days: when the band was able to produce gems like The Fat Of The Land - until Liam Howlett began to lose his touch and released "Baby's Got A Temper" in 2002. And that was officially the start of The Prodigy's imminent downfall (although 2004 album Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned contained some excellent tracks, it had - unlike any of their preceding albums - many tracks that were just simply fillers).

Their Law starts with "Firestarter" - the song responsible for putting the boys from Essex at the forefront of the British dance music scene in the mid-nineties. This track is without a doubt the band's most successful single to date. And why wouldn't it be? The controversy surrounding the song and the music video was enough to send millions of young people dancing around in public sewers whilst it made old people run scared to the opposite direction. "Their Law" follows next - a song that inspired the name for this compilation. The naming is possibly a tribute to this song as it was purportedly meant to be released a single from Music For The Jilted Generation, but was eventually declined. The rest of the tracks proceed very nicely as we are taken on a journey through the bands triumphs - undeniably most of the tracks on this compilation - and tribulations - an example being the third release off Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned, "Hot Ride", which failed to break even the UK top 40 chart.

In short, Disc One has basically got a nice mix of selections from their four studio albums, and gives us snippets of the best of the band's music through the fifteen years that they've been around. The tracks quite obviously missing from this otherwise quite complete collection has got to be "Fire" and non-album single "Baby's Got A Temper". I am not quite that surprised that the latter has been decided to be left out of this pretty much perfect list of punk electronica: it is heavily muted and under-produced as far I am concerned; a single best forgotten to have ever existed. "Fire" on the other hand leaves a large hole in the compilation. It was without a doubt one of the best releases from the Experience LP, apart from "Out Of Space".

Disc Two offers some new material, live tracks and some fairly interesting mixes. The new tracks are nothing to shout about - they are yet again examples of the band's failure at producing fresh exciting songs they once seemed to dish out effortlessly. Metal scratches across tarmac floors and electronic sound warps however all fit quite nicely together in the mixes. Nonetheless, there is still something missing from the mixes that leaves much to be desired. In fact, it will probably have most listeners wondering if much effort has been put into them at all.

I would recommend this dual disc edition to any serious fan of the band, just on the merit of the band's decision to include new (yet mediocre) tracks - which makes it a must-have for any serious collector. But for the rest of us, the single CD edition should do just nicely as it includes most of the band's top tracks.

All that's left for us to do now is to dance to this compilation of re-hashed numbers whilst we wait and see where the band heads to next after this. And we certainly all wait with much anticipation.

3 out of 5 stars motown meets house.......2007-04-18

I'm not so sure that I like this double cd really - it's not the music I'm into, and the closest I could describe it would be 'motown meets house'. It's the only CD in my collection that I'd like to sell to somebody who's into this music.
