5 out of 5 stars This Song KIX!.......2003-03-09

And I think the actual rap bits may actually be in Korean...but i'm not sure...Either way, it's a great and rarified song, and ACO (one of my favourite Japanese singers) sings a great chorus. This song gets stuck in my head SO OFTEN even though i've barely a clue what they're talking of (and wanna find out;)
Reccomended!:)

3 out of 5 stars Target demographic: Japanese rap fans........2001-07-13

In my opinion, DJ Krush produces of some of the freshest hip-hop in the world today. His many collaborations with jazz musicians (particularly Toshinori Kondo on "Ki-Oku"), rappers (ranging from Black Thought of the Roots to Mos Def), and other producers (check out "Duality" with DJ Shadow or "Le Temps" with DJ Cam) have been outstanding. This single sees Krush collaborating with a Japanese rapper (ACO) and singer (Twigy).

The beat is outstanding, but it's obviously designed for a rapper; on its own it becomes somewhat repetitive. The closest comparison would be the "Intro" on "MiLight." The problem here for me is the Japanese rapping. Because this single was only released in Japan and since the target demographic are Japanese, maybe I don't have any right to diss it. But all the same, I don't think the Japanese language translates well into the rap aesthetic. A lot of it seems to lack articulation (or maybe I'm just ignorant because I don't know Japanese) and flow. My roommate this past year was a Japanese exchange student and I got a chance to hear a lot of Japanese hip-hop (DJ Oasis, Dragon Ash, etc.). A lot of the beats were tight, but language just doesn't do it for me in the same way that English, French or German does. Another language that doesn't do rap particularly well is Russian (pronounce the word rap like "rep" with your r rolled). I'm not dissing Japanese or Russian rap; personally, I just don't care for the sound of their respective languages over a rap beat. But I'll keep an open mind. If anyone out there hears something that just blows their mind, send me an e-mail.

Tragicomic- the biggest hinderance to this song is the male vocalist. He delivers his lines inarticulately, preventing the song from getting any punch to it. He mummbles through his parts, leaving us with little to hold onto or remember. The female vocalist, on the other hand, is quite good. Her voice ranges from full and cutting to a quiet whisper. Unfortunately, her parts are few.

Tragicomic "beyond real mix"- Remixed by Dj Spinna, this version of the song is refreshing after the first. It adds a stronger beat, some flutes and a peppering of interesting sounds.

Tragicomic instrumental- This track is also good because it focuses on what I bought the CD for, Dj Krush's music. The hook is a nice, catchy bass and the beat is well constructed. Unfortunately the song was made to be rapped over so the first half of it passes by without much variation. After that the song picks up, though. The bass changes around a bit and a synthesiser steps in and out. But, overall dissapointing considering Krush's other work.

5 out of 5 stars Krush and Japan.......2000-12-27

Rare and very interesting disk. Many good themes of downtempo music was burn in Japan. Country with great trip-hop electronicaly atmosphere. Krush was born in Japan. Native power helped to him to made a greatest music self-remixes. Profesional scratches, calm drum loops and soft, very soft sound of Krush`s magic trip-hop. Its like a dream, dream with Japanese experience...

Product Description

If Arms of Kismet's 2004 debut, Eponymous, was a heartfelt affirmation, the new Cutting Room Rug is its prankster twin, fusing parodic rants with tragic laments in a playful cocktail of satire and sincerity. From the mischievous "Clover" to the ominous "Coil," the new CD is a dark joyride, careening from track to track like a condemned man in a funhouse. Its inhabitants can only cry at weddings, can only laugh at funerals. Fans of postmodern popsters like Beck, The Flaming Lips, and The Postal Service will find a kindred spirit in Arms of Kismet. Cutting Room Rug forsakes pimpin' and rides for pointed salvos wrapped as sweet confections. Split into three "acts," it attacks with guitars, hooks, and dancebeats, wooing the listener with sugary, stuck-in-your-head melodies and fractured lyrics. The format recalls The Firesign Theatre and The Who Sell Out, veering between spiritual yearning and crass commercialism, compelling passers-by to forget their troubles and "spin the wheel." It sketches a perilous, chaotic world begging for a skip and a chuckle. Arms of Kismet blends genres ("roots" music, '80s rock, hip-hop) in offbeat and revelatory ways. From the hooky "Outbound Train" to the folky "Life Imitates" to the house-soaked "Cracks," it paints a fast-changing landscape where one never knows what ripping good luck or bitter misfortune waits over the next hill. Brooding and poppy, funny and foreboding, it's toe-tapping, tragicomic rock 'n' roll. Cutting Room Rug was written and produced by Mark Doyon, mastered by Jon Astley (Tori Amos, George Harrison, Pete Townshend), and released by independent label Wampus Multimedia. Guests include Kowtow Popof ("Life Imitates") Janna Audey ("Coil"), Eamon Loftus ("Auriculara [Listen to Me]"), Scott Goodrick ("Clarendon"), and Paul Golder ("Auriculara [Listen to Me]").

4 out of 5 stars Arms of Kismet - well worth a listen.......2006-01-12

Like a fine single malt whiskey, Mark Doyon keeps improving with age. Cutting Room Rug, AofK's second release, is a strong follow up to Eponymous (which you must check out). Doyon can truly turn a phrase and the production and vocals on this recording are top notch. "Life Imitates" and "Pinnacle of Same" should be on everyone's playlist. 4.5 stars and hoping for lots more good music from this band. When's the tour?
