If you're looking to label this music as one sort or another--classical, jazz, bluegrass--you're bound to get into trouble. The two Quartets at work here--the Turtle Island String Quartet and the Ying Quartet--are innovators, blending absolutely classical training with a love of experimentation, improvisation, and an ear for unusual textures. The CD begins with a cool, swinging, true jazz classic ("Yearnin'") for the full octet and ends with a version of John Lennon's "Because" which captures the piece's melancholy in just the right manner. Along the way, an original work by the Turtle Island cellist, "Julie-O," discovers the darker and more virtuosic reaches of the pair of cellos. Darius Milhaud's "La Creation du Monde," a 1923 piece that explored the combination of European classical music and jazz, gets a new arrangement, and another original piece, "Variations on an Unoriginal Theme," pits one quartet against the other in a friendly competition that touches on R&B and Samba. This is a just a great album to listen to. Weird and wonderful music, executed with joy and precision. There's a lot of power in this music, but it's delivered with such frivolous confidence that you barely notice there's a giant in the room. And as an added bonus, the album is sonically extremely pleasing. This recording has fantastic presence and ambience. A definite buy.

A great album - similar to the modern music composed by the Kronos Quartet, but more jazzy and upbeat. Every piece on this album is different and interesting- yet closer listening one can hear the themes that tie them all together. I've given this album to 5 people over the holidays - to both classical music lovers and those who never owned a string-quartet CD - and all have really enjoyed it.

OK, I admit I bought this CD because they were nominated for a Grammy (which they just won). It has quickly become one of my favorite discs. It's amazing what these performers can do with their instruments. I really enjoy "Yearnin'," and although I'm always skeptical about Beatles arrangements, the lush harmonies of "Because" lend themselves well to a classical/jazz interpretation. Our family is a big fan of the Yings, and we hope to hear more from this wonderful quartet!

as a founding member of this group, I want to say that this current lineup (with 2 of the original members) is one of the most versatile and powerful lineups for this band ever. And this recording is in many ways the best ever, technically and musically. Anyone who is interested in the TISQ, or string music of any kind, should buy this CD immediately!

An Estancia is a ranch, and this snazzy ballet is the Argentinian equivalent of Copland's Rodeo. The final Malambo is one of the most exciting ballet movements in the repertoire--a real rhythmic tour-de-force. The title of this terrific disc is Latin American Ballets, and both the Villa-Lobos and Chavez make up the balance of a sensational program. The late Eduardo Mata, whose death in a plane crash a couple of years ago came as a terrible shock to the music world, had a proprietary interest in all of this music, and conducted it with total mastery. Dorian's sonics give the music maximum impact, and the orchestra is world class. --David Hurwitz

The selections on this CD are excellent works that are unfortunately not very common in the classical repetoire. I really love this CD, especially for the 'Estancia' Ballet Suite. The best way to describe these Ginastera dances is intense, since they have such powerful underlying rhythms, and a driving energy that they will really get you going. In addition, there is a slower Danza del Trigo has a sweet flute and violin solos to conterbalance the driving energy of the other three movments. The last dance 'Malambo' is a whirlwind of a finale that will leave you a little out of breath at the end. I played this suite in orchestra and it was a real joy to perform and even better to listen to.

Uirapuru is a dark and intense piece. Musically, it doesn't seem to make much sense, but the then again the story it tells is a little strange. Great harmonics and some mysterious sounding melodies. I really enjoyed hearing this piece for the first time on this CD.

Though I wasn't totally enamored by the Caballos de Vapor Suite, it still had some great latin rhythms.

Overall, excellent work by the Simon Bolivar Orchestra. Bravo!

This is perhaps the most satisfying CD purchase I've made, bar none. If that seems excessive, well, O.K., it is. BUT, this disc is phenomenal, and for a lover of Latin-American classical music, its a must. The ballet Uirapuru cemented my view that Villa-Lobos is one of the most phenomenal orchestrators. Uirapuru is a dark, mystical score that tells the story of an enchanted rainforest bird who turns into a man, who falls in love with a madien, but then gets shot by an angry old flute-playing man with a bow who's upset because some hunters beat him up because he wierded them out. Well, the story may be somewhat silly, but the music is unsettlingly powerful, with glittering orchestration that is masterfully highlighted by Mata's superb Venezuelan players. Chavez's Horse-Power suite is fascinating in a much more visceral way, with a mix of neo-classical wit and chugging latin rhythms. The closing movement, 'El Tropico', far surpasses the Pat Benatar album of the same name, and weaves intricate Bach-ian counterpoint into a darkly sentimental yet energizing tango. The final selection, by far the most well known, is Ginastera's popular Estancia ballet suite. For those who DON'T know the piece, be prepared for blistering 6/8 rhythms and exhilirating syncopations (a mainstay for Ginastera works). The performances are phenomenal, and totally committed. Dorian (who have put out a number of excellent CD's surveying important Latin-American repertoire) provides top-shelf sound, as usual. O.K., so maybe it's not the BEST CD EVER, but it's close.

This album is not one of Runrig's best, as it moves too far away from the folk roots that make this band good. The frequent spoken vocals are a bit silly, and, though heartfelt, the album is not musically excellent. If you want to buy a Runrig album (and by all means do, they're a great band), you should buy The Stamping Ground or Heartland, or the live album Once In A Lifetime.

Perhaps my favorite Runrig album to be released after Cutter and the Clan,Mara is the band at its usual best.Mara means 'sea' in Gaelic and the theme of the album seems to be filled with sea metaphors its symbolism for life,change,the ebb and flow.Hebridean Gaelic culture has always been a sea-going culture and the omnipresence of the sea has played a large role is shaping the Scottish outlook.Maybe for that reason there's a fish painting on the cd cover.

My favorite song on the album is 'Meadainn oidche air an acairseid' (midnight on the anchorage),it's kind of hard to know from the lyrics what the song is exactly about but the sound of the music is beautiful,with the chorus and drumming and stirring Gaelic voices.This is Donnie Munro's voice at its best.Another excellent song is 'The Mighty Atlantic' wriiten by Malcolm Jones and is another beautiful anthem about coming home from the sea,with really moving instumentrals near the end.'Nothing but the sun' and 'Things that are' are not specifically Scottish in referances,but I liked them anyway,for the way they sound particularly. Note that this is the last album with Donnie Munro as a band member before he left to be a political figure in Scotland's labor party.

Although this album was not as fast-paced as what I've come to expect of Runrig, it is still worth purchasing. These songs are more sad than passionate but they are grand, nonetheless. My brother (Lowell) introduced me to this genre of music in '89 and I've bought everything I could since. I've yet to be disappointed, even through 14 albums. **WARNING** Expect to change the way you look at Scottish history.

It never lets go - from the off it grabs you by the eyeballs and by the hairs on the back of your neck. I defy anyone not to be moved by the word and music paintings on offer here. Espescially the most quiet and spine tingling song ever by this band of constant surprise. If you listen while driving - watch your speed!! You will drift over that limit with no consciousness.

Buy it - be transported to the silver sands, the seagulls, the waves - the tranquillity of Western Scotland.

The old flair of history, passion and rock come together in this trip from the Higllands to the sea. This is a gentile dose of Runrig with more of a folk feel that rock. Worth having in your collection if you enjoy a rock and roll feel to your celtic music.
