Eyes Adrift represents the first teaming of Krist Novoselic, guitarist Curt Kirkwood, and former Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh. While Novoselic's previous project, Sweet 75, was misbegotten, the ex- Nirvana bassist's new "tragedy all-star" band draws on a rich vein of lilting psychedelic country rock that borrows heavily from the mid-period work of another of its members, the Meat Puppets' Kirkwood. Eyes Adrift's Americana resonates thanks to its solidness and maturity. --Everett True

Curt Kirkwood ruins this album. Noveselic and Gaugh are great musically together, although Noveselic should not ever sing. Kirkwood is not good at singing nor is he that good at guitar. this album is not at all good. I wish the singer/guitar was Jerry Cantrell of Chris Cornell.

2 out of 5 stars Krist Is Great And The Puppets Are Ok But This Record Blows.......2005-06-07

This record really bores the heck out of me. The music just seems so mediocre. The obvious problem is people are looking for some sort of Nirvana brilliance to rub off on this record; after all, you've got Nirvana's co-founder and bassist on it, and in addition, a guy that played with Nirvana on unplugged, one of Nirvana's most successful feats.

Me, I'm a hardcore Nirvana fan from way back, and one thing about Krist that was always great was the way he'd sing these freak out jam songs, all crazy with that high-end, sometimes out-of-tune voice. Take their infamous 'Dazed And Confused Jam' as a perfect example of that. It was always a bit ridiculous and a bit awesome. Plus he was always very witty and humorous and the crazy stuff that would come out of his mouth really added to the greatness. Even Kurt Cobain would complain that Krist Noveselic's humour outshined his own.

Now if Krist would make some freak out music like that old stuff he used to jam on, he'd be back in the game. He'd never be as big as Nirvana but I could totally see him touring with bands like Sonic Youth (obviously) if he could put together some sort of freak out jam band. Maybe that'd be too close to his Nirvana days for him. Or maybe he never realized that besides his bass playing, those silly jams were his musical strength. But either way I hope he returns to music some day. The political world needs people like Krist Noveselic in it but the rock and roll world does too!

5 out of 5 stars Beach music- Krist Novoselic has a great singing voice!.......2005-01-03

I NEVER splerge on a CD that I've never heard.
But I did.
Well ok I did hear "Alaska" & "Inquiring Minds".
Well as soon as I popped this cd in with my friends we drove out to the beach and played it all the way through, my friends who are die hard SLIPKNOT fans had 2 remarks:
1. This is good!
2. I want to buy this album
This cd compliments a beautiful day on the beach.
The best song is "Pasted" sung by Krist Novoselic (who does a good job) I loved it sooo much that I'm buying the single to "alaska" because it has a song called "Son of Pasted" which I believe is a different mix of my favorite song.
It's such a shame that Krist Novoselic has left the music business.
Recently I heard that Krist is pondering a solo cd, that is great news considering my favorite tracks on this cd (besides 'Alaska' & 'What I Said') are with Krist Singing.

In my opinion this is better than the Foo Fighters.
I buy a Krist Novoselic solo CD in a second.

1 out of 5 stars Nobody likes a polititian. Especially when he's a drunk.......2004-05-22

To call this album dull is a monumental understatement. I love Folk and Blues, and this album ain't neither although it tries its hardest to act, sound, and reek of it. But in all actuality, the only thing Eyes Adrift reeks of is disc rot from being left on the shelf unbought in music stores across the country. I never cared for Nirvana very much (except for Unplugged), but you'd figure a little bit of Kurt's folk sensibility would have rubbed off on Krist after all those years of them living together. Too bad the only thing Krist was inspired to do was make the worst possible career move a musician of his level of former-fame could make; Krist Novoselic became a politician. And nobody likes a politician. Especially when he's a drunk and a stoner like good 'ol Novie. After claiming he didn't quit Eyes Adrift and music altogether because of the money and popularity this record failed to bring him, he then proceeded to whine about how poorly it sold. What, did you actually expect a politician to give a straight answer and not flip-flop? Me neither. The moral Krist leaves you with: Trade in your bass, your music career, and your soul for a shot at political campaigning. Wherever Kurt is, I'm sure he's is disgusted, as anybody with an ounce of feeling in their being should be.

Rimsky-Korsakov's operatic suites used to be standard repertoire, but like so much attractive and colorful music, it seems that recording has absolved orchestras of the need to play them live! It's a rare day that you will find such lovely works as the Christmas Eve or Snow Maiden suite in the concert hall, so by all means invest in this comprehensive collection and enjoy them at home. This was the first project in Neeme Järvi's epic collaboration with the Scottish National Orchestra, and as is so often the case in such instances, everyone really plays their collective hearts out. Even Chandos outdoes itself in providing sound of speaker-shattering impact. A great set. --David Hurwitz

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Little known but wonderful.......2007-06-03

When was the last time you sat down and listened to Sheherazade? Have you ever heard it at good volume on good equipment? I thought not. So that's one thing to do. And now even better news: Rimsky-Korsakov wrote much great music in operas which have remained unknown to Western audiences. Here is a little of it in orchestral suites - good performances and sound and at a reasonable price. May it be the beginning of a delightful new journey into Russian opera!

5 out of 5 stars Rare Rimsky-Korsakov well done........2006-07-19

Actually I was already familiar with some of the selections--most notably "Procession of the Nobles" from "Mlada" and "Dance of the Tumblers" from "The Snow Maiden". Thus I had a standard of quality from which I could compare the unfamiliar music.

Every piece sparkles. Rimsky-Korsakov's music is, generally, a study in elegance. Every note of these suites proves it. Frequently, when you hear music that is seldom performed, you discover WHY it isn't done. That does not apply here. I think it is a shame that I have not heard most of this music before.

Neeme Jarvi and the Scottish National Orchestra do a wonderful job performing all these suites. I whole-heartedly recommend this recording.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection for Rimsky fans. (And if you're not a fan, you will be.).......2005-08-19

I have fond feelings for this collection. It was my introduction to the Chandos label and to conductor Neemi Jarvi, and I was bowled over. Since that time, recording just about every piece of music written by Western composers has apparently reduced some of Jarvi's enthusiasm, because his later recordings are often not as just-right as his Rimsky performances herein. But these performances are everything they should be. Jarvi and his Scottish orchestra stress the sparkling colors and the near-classical leanness of Rimsky's orchestrations. No Wagnerian bloat, no Brahmsian bottom-heaviness here. Rimsky seems to return to Berlioz as his orchestral paradigm, I always think.

I was immediately attracted to the Christmas Eve Suite, which I hadn't heard before; it builds to a wonderful climax in the tempo of a polonaise. Move over, Piotr I. Tchaikovsky--this music is a great change from chestnuts out of the Nutcracker (a pretty lame pun, but I'll let it stand).

However, Christmas Eve is not the only pleasure these discs provide. Jarvi offers first-rate performances of the lovely May Night, Rimsky's finest overture, as well as suites from the Golden Cockerel, the Snow Maiden, and Mlada, which contain some of Rimsky's most memorable music: the Dance of the Tumblers, the Procession of the Nobles, the Wedding Feast and Death of King Dodon. Great stuff.

And then there's Chandos' recording: incredibly clean and wide-ranging, with just the right sense of hall sound. I'm still impressed every time I listen.

5 out of 5 stars As complete and good a collection as you're likely to find........2003-08-02

Over a 35-year period, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wrote fifteen operas, all but a handful of them still in the active Russian repertoire. A few of them have even gained something of a foothold recently in the U.S., with Valery Gergiev and his Kirov Opera company performing them on tour. For those seeking orchestral works of Rimsky-Korsakov beyond Sheherazade, the Great Russian Easter Festival Overture, and, perhaps, Capriccio Espagnol and the 2nd ("Antar") Symphony, a logical place to start is with the orchestral suites he fashioned from several of his better-known operas (covering nearly half of his operatic output).

For those so interested, my first - and highest - recommendation goes to this Chandos boxed set, with Neemi Järvi conducting the Scottish National Orchestra (as it was known in 1984, when this recording was made; it is now the Royal Scottish National Orchestra). With the possible exception of some incidental music from Sadko and The Tsar's Bride, this set contains virtually all of the most popular orchestral music from Rimsky-Korsakov's better-known operas.

Over the years, Järvi has developed somewhat of a reputation for "recording everything in sight," not always with the most effective of results. But here, in what the editorial reviewer identifies as his first recording session with the SNO, he has done a splendid job all around, bringing out the often gorgeous coloristic effects of the music, with an orchestra that fully does justice to the performance requirements, and with stunning sound captured by the Chandos engineers.

Particularly noteworthy are the suite from Mlada (with its dramatic "Procession of the Nobles" march), the atmspheric and magical music from The Invisible City of Kitezh, and the better-known suite from The Golden Cockerel. In all of these suites - and in the balance of the boxed set as well - Järvi and the SNO capture the orchestrational genius of Rimsky-Korsakov with perfection: brilliant brass, shimmering strings, nicely-detailed woodwind playing, as is seldom heard from all too many Russian orchestras.

This was clearly an auspicious debut album for Järvi and the SNO, an orchestra that he would direct in many recordings over the following decade or so. And, though not inexpensive, it is the single finest (and most complete) album of Rimsky-Korsakov's orchestral suites from his operas that I have had the pleasure of hearing.

Recommended without reservation.

Bob Zeidler

5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation.......2000-09-07

I concur that this is an excellent set, performed exquisitely by Jarvi and the Scottish National Orchestra. The comprehensive liner notes refer to the Procession of the Nobles from the Mlada Suite as "splendid." Indeed it is, a tour de force of orchestration that has few peers. The panache with which it is performed here is a touchstone for the quality of the entire set.

This should be a must-have for fans of Rimsky-Korsakov. It certainly assembles much of his best work, some of which is not very easy to find. The one quibble, albeit a big one, is the price. At first glance, you may think that the price isn't too bad, given that you get 3 CDs. But these CDs each contain only 50 minutes or so of music. A technical justification is that a 2 CD package would have required one of the suites to straddle 2 discs. I'm sure that most listeners, however, would have preferred such a cut if the pricing were more realistic. Tough call. Maybe drop a big hint to a friend that you want this as a gift.

I bought this japan import (with 2 extra tracks) because I love 'Pasted'-this cd includes 'Son of Pasted'.
'Son of Pasted' is a very cool track with Curt Kirkwood of vocals, whereas 'The Cup And The Lip' has Krist Novoselic on lead vocals.
Both of these songs are awesome and well worth buying!
The Japan import also includes another booklet with lyrics!
This import version also include the music video to 'ALASKA' which is very cool!

4 out of 5 stars Minimal electro-funk at its best..........2006-08-02

Chicken Lips (a.k.a. Dean Meredith and Andrew Meecham) have been mery much hyped a few years ago when they unleashed their semi-hit "He Not In", whose bombastic intro blasted every discerning dancefloor when selected. At that time, they were also mistaken as being part of that so-called "Electro-Clash" dance scene, while their style was far less rock-influenced than most of their peers at that time. Mostly instrumental, their sound was an exciting architecture of electronics, dubby effects and live playing (for that matter, check their 2002 "Extended Play" CD). This time, things got tightened up a bit within the arrival of singer Jonny Spencer (featured on all of the eight tracks here); what you get here is actually real songs instead of four-to-the-floor fillers (even if these were brilliant most of the time).
Obvious influences rank from early Prince (remember those classic first five albums ?) or David Bowie circa "Scary Monsters" (as evidenced on the exquisite "Lovin' Cup") and even at times they sound like a Martin Hannett-produced combo who would have had a black singer instead of a dark one (kidding). Even if this looks like a curious melting pot, it results in one of the most original sound I've heard in recent times. Spencer's voice diversity is really convincing and the duo's musicianship is clearly more affirmed than on their first two long-play efforts and even if it is cohesive as a whole, "Making Faces" (in its cheer 36 minutes) displays a wide range of club-friendly tunes and... oh, i didn't mention those highly suggestive lyrics ("I'm known for my pleasures / I'll treat you to my treasures / Don't sit down just yet / till it gets as good as it gets" in "White Dwarf" or "I know you're feeling down / No place lower than the ground / All you want is to be loved / Makin' love without sound" from the deeply contagious "Without Sound").
And if you still can't understand why I think all this act is about is so special, "Making faces" features the only love song to a... cow (or is it...?), within the single "Sweet Cow" ("She may not look divine / But she's fine / And I love the way she moves me / Make me feel like a king / She don't sing / But her moo knows how to groove me"... oh God).

Japanese version features 4 bonus tracks, including a tremendous remix of "White Dwarf" by Josh Wink.

Highlights include: "Sweet Cow", "Without Sound", "Lovin' Cup" & "White Dwarf".

5 out of 5 stars Indescribably beautiful music, superlative performances........2005-09-06

This CD was hard to find. After a few months of searching, I decided to buy `gently used.' But I am not sorry at all. I very much wanted to hear more of Sviridov's music, having absorbed the thrilling Petersburg song cycle, also performed by these two extraordinary musicians.

Let me say first that Sviridov's music truly drives both performances. Long a fan of pianist Mikhail Arkadiev, I was surprised by what I heard. His playing is always superb, but on this CD, he is beyond inspired.

This sentiment goes double for Dmitri Hvorostovsky, whose interpretation of Russia Cast Adrift has been criticized in the past. I was very moved by his work here. His artistry is always amazing, but the depth of his interpretation is such that I can barely explain how or what I feel when I listen to it. His voice is superb, his performance flawless, his talent seemingly without boundary. An original, unique, and singular vocalist.

If you can find this CD, buy it at any cost. Otherwise, you will be missing out on something very special indeed.

      5 out of 5 stars One of Hvorostovsky's best.......2004-12-15

Hvorostovsky is in terrific form here, bringing a compelling intensity to these often-anguished Sviridov songs. While many music lovers may initially be drawn to the more accessible Rachmaninov songs, it's the Sviridov cycle that ultimately stands out here. Enhanced by Hvorostovsky's dark timbre and sensitive phrasing, songs such as The Owl and the riveting Milky Way emerge as profoundly haunting miniature masterpieces. Shortly after this recording was made, the octogenarian Sviridov (1915-1998) would write another song cycle - this time expressly for the great Hvorostovsky: the equally memorable Petersburg - a Vocal Poem, released on the Delos label in 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Come for the Rachmaninov and stay for the Sviridov!.......1999-06-06

The world of music should be grateful that the late Georgi Sviridov found such an invincible champion for his stunning and yet accessible song cycles. Even with uncharted repertoire Hvorostovsky does a painstaking job and never disappoints the listener. Mikhail Arkadiev works magic with the often episodic piano accompaniments, which sound by no means easy. Of course the Rachmaninov is very nice, like a refreshing salad before a scrumptious main course. But the Sviridov deserves a wide audience. It is to be hoped as of this posting that his cycle 'Petersburg' (a foundation stone of Hvorostovsky's latest recital tour program) will also be recorded in its entirety.

5 out of 5 stars This Smooth Melody.......2000-08-04

All songs have really nice melody which everyone likes. Both of the bember of Samuel Purdey, Barney Hurley and Gavin Dodds, had been a tour member of Jamiroquai. Actually, the former bassist of Jamirouqai, Stuart Zender, played in track NO.10. Not only him but also two members from the great band, the brand new hevies played in this CD. If you like Jamiroquai you will like it I promise!
