Two CDs' worth of Gaynor is, frankly, a lot: Beyond her two classics (the brilliant, cyclically relentless title track and "Never Can Say Goodbye"), there's not much that made it above the dustier reaches of the charts, and not much that deserved to. Gaynor was a disco diva by the numbers, and her career lived and died with the style--her records are generic in the sense that they were absolutely of their genre. So I Will Survive is programmed for discophiles more than for Gaynorphiles--the real star here is the production. The set includes three medleys that occupied full sides of her first three disco albums, as well as tracks from her '74-'81 albums that show off what her arrangers could do. --Douglas Wolk

4 out of 5 stars one of the best Gloria compilations.......2004-04-24

However, like a few other people, I am disapointed a few key tracks like Substitute is missing. I think the song selections showcase Gloria's diversity in song selections and let's people know that she is a lot more than the singer that sang "I will survive". Hopefully Universal will reissue her "Love tracks" album on a double cd set with bonus cuts on cd #2, like the original I will survive in Spanish and the 12 inch mix of Substitute as well as the radio edits of I will survive and Substitute. Just a thought anyways. Peace out.

4 out of 5 stars Never Can Say Goodbye.......2004-02-19

To date this is the best Gloria Gaynor Collection out there. If I was a first time Gloria Gaynor buyer this would be the cd to buy. As well as the usual songs, there are some never before released tracks. I was pleased with the sound quality but not too happy with the order they were placed in. However there were a few tracks still absent like: TOUCH OF LIGHTNING , WE JUST CAN'T MAKE IT, SEARCHIN', FALSE ALARM, and YO VIVIRE (I will survive in Spanish) original extended version. Not one of the numerous remixes of the same title.

5 out of 5 stars The almost-definitive collection.......2001-11-10

Great collection ! Everything is here -including the fantastic « Anybody wanna party » in its 12" remix. Well, almost everything is here... Still missing : « Substitute » (the 8:30 version) and « Sobreviviré » (« I will survive » in spanish). And why « I kinda like me » is edited ? Anyway, this is the best Gaynor's collection available.

4 out of 5 stars The definite Gloria Gaynor compilation.......2000-03-17

This 2CD-set is the definite Gloria Gaynor-compilation. Although Gloria Gaynor has always been referred to as "The Queen of Disco", she actually only had a limited handful of hits, and her albums were - with a few exceptions - never as memorable, magical and coherent as Donna Summer's albums, so far they haven't been released on CD either but with this set, there really is no need for it either. The full-length 8-min. recording of ... yes ... "I Will Survive" opens the ball, and it strucks me every time I hear it what an all-time classic this song really is! Next is of course Gloria's ground-breaking side-long medley of "Honey Bee", "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "Reach Out I'll Be There" from her first LP, and Meco Monardo's tight production and Tom Moulton's excellent mix is still outstanding. Her two subsequent LP's "Experience Gloria Gaynor" & "I've Got You" followed the same concept, and both 18-min. medleys are also included here, and although the songs didn't make the same impact on the singles charts, "Casanova Brown", "(If You Want It) Do It Yourself", "Let's Make A Deal" and "Be Mine" are brilliant. For her fourth album, "Glorious", miss Gaynor teamed up with disco maestro Gregg Diamond, the slow jamming 9-min. dance delight "Most Of All" is included here. At this time, Gloria Gaynor was however having a hard time regaining the disco throne, and her "Park Avenue Sound" album from 1978 didn't help her much. The two tracks included: "This Love Affair" and "You're All I Need To Get By" are pleasant but forgettable, but then came "I Will Survive" from her "Love Tracks" album which is also represented here by a funky 12" mix of "Anybody Wanna Party". Following up such an enormeous success is definitely an ungrateful task, Gloria and the Dino Fekaris/Freddie Perren-team did try with "Let Me Know (I Have A Right)", a strong song in itself but too much a plagiate of "I Will Survive" and from then on it went downhill with her two last albums on Polydor, "Stories" (1980) and "I Kinda Like Me" (1981), although the title track of the latter is quite enjoyable. There's a couple of competent adult ballads on the set's second disc as well as her terrific disco version of "Walk On By" from her second album. The only thing, Polydor really didn't have to include is the 1993 remix of "I Will Survive" with Gloria sounding like Minnie Mouse, the original mix stands as strong now as it did then. Gloria's Hi-NRG version of "I Am What I Am" from 1983 (which made the UK Top 20) would have been a more essential inclusion but it wasn't released on Polydor. Still, this is a masterpiece compilation, the impeccable design + booklet with extensive liner notes and pictures and credits of all the albums.

Been looking for this particular song in the long version for a long time. After e-mailing various DJ's who never responded to my mail concerning this song I was ready to give up the search. I decided to try Amazon and Wallah!, there is what I was looking for. Very good price and excellant service as usual. Thanks Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars First Day Of The Rest Of My Life.......2005-11-07

This song has taught me a hard lesson. I am going to stop pining over a 34-year-old relationship. Today while feeling sorry for myself I too realized "I will survive." Walking in and out of my life for the past few months, today I finally reached the point where I just won't take it anymore. If you are feeling sorry for yourself, play this song over and over, you will feel much stronger and will stop crying and pitying yourself, I did.....

5 out of 5 stars hankaaron sucks!.......2004-02-07

ok, so it's really bad when there are people out there who pretend to be so educated about music, but are actually just rambling retards... an undergraduate @ the Eastman School of Music, I am taking a theory class in which we are studying this song. there's nothing wrong with it, and if nothing else, it's a great way to remember the descending fifths sequence... So shut up, you morons, and stop trying to influnence others with your idiotic intellectuallism.....

5 out of 5 stars When Music Really Did Survive..........2003-08-25

Although I am an 80s child born in the late 70s, I think this is one of the best songs I've heard. For any woman who knows what it's like to be put down or walked on by someone (which is all of us), this is the perfect song for you. It tells the story of a woman who's had enough and she's not going to take it anymore. She's moving on and she's ready to show the world what she's made of. A true, innovative "girl power" song.

4 out of 5 stars Great song but..........2003-07-27

I have to sorta agree with hankaaron. Don't get me wrong I listen to this song at least 3 times a week. The words are very meaningful and emotional! Flame on Gloria!

But, from a musical stand point it is a boring song. First off, the song has no chorus. It follows a simple circle of 5ths chord progression until it hits a B diminished chord instead of the B-flat so it can jump to E major then back to the home key of A minor....then the same sequence is repeated for an additional 8 minutes. There is no breakdown into other keys. It wouldn't have hurt for it to play around in the relative major key of C for a few bars, then return back to A minor.

The strings and horns add musical color to the repetition. And Gloria's voice and the meaning of the words ensured it's success.

But, not all people listen to music for the value of the words, or the beat. Some people are not tone deaf and expect good musical creativity from artists in addition to great lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2005-07-29

From beginning to end this CD is pure delight. A great recording has great music, a great performance, and great sound; this one scores on all three counts.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's musicals dominated Broadway in the 1940s and 1950s, and American musical theater has produced no more consistently eloquent and durable voice than Richard Rodgers. From his fertile genius flowed a surprising number of memorable songs, many of which have passed into and become an accepted and beloved part of modern American culture.

This well-filled CD (77:36) features symphonic arrangements (all but two by Robert Russell Bennett) of the music from Oklahoma (1943), Carousel (1945), State Fair (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959). All the great tunes are here in suites from each musical that average 10-12 minutes in length. The arrangements are expert: rich, varied, and colorful. The performances are polished, idiomatic, and irresistible; Kunzel and this orchestra are thorough masters of this kind of material. And Telarc's sound (recorded 1991) is state-of-the-art (engineer Michael Bishop deserves to take a bow).

In short, there's nothing here to cloud your listening pleasure (the only quibble I can imagine is that some of your favorites may not last long enough), so it's hard for me to envision anyone with ears and a taste for music who wouldn't enjoy this CD. Warmly recommended. Finally, if you like this one as much as I do, you might want to know that the same team has produced a companion volume, the Lerner & Lowe Songbook for Orchestra.

5 out of 5 stars "Some Enchanted Evening" with Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops.......2003-12-26

Erich Kunzel's Rodgers and Hammerstein anthology with the Cincinatti Pops Orchestra is one of the best and most ravishing instrumental Rodgers and Hammerstein albums of all time. With sumptuous arrangements and warm, natural Telarc recording, this glorious 77-minute CD presents sweeping, melodic arrangements of over 60 Rodgers and Hammerstein selections, spanning eight scores, and Kunzel allows the Pops to play with a characterful and polished understanding of the Rodgers and Hammerstein idiom. The disc is enough to cheer you up on a dull day and make you smile, and it might even want to make you feel like a convert to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.

This CD has all the scores arranged chronologically. The OKLAHOMA! suite that opens this disc promises a feast for the senses, Kunzel ably evokes the territory's "bright, golden haze" in the way he conducts the various excerpts, until you feel the atmosphere of the country charm of the show, and the love-affair between Curly and Laurey. Then, in CAROUSEL, he ably evokes the pathos of this tragic R&H masterwork, especially in the truncated Waltz, but he leads a wonderfully melodic "June is Bustin' Out All Over" and a devotional "You'll Never Walk Alone." Although this suite does not include Billy's pivotal Soliloquy, it includes "If I Loved You" as an expression of his love for Julie, and within minutes you could be soaked in the ups and downs of the show's mood.

After a brief STATE FAIR suite, with sweeping renditions of "It Might As Well Be Spring" and "It's a Grand Night for Singing", we are brought into the disc's showstopping highlights. These highlights are the excerpts from SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I, and THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But yet Kunzel conducts the rest of the disc until the various suites amount to a series of showstoppers. These three suites present wonderfully-arranged versions of their many familiar classic songs, with well-played solos. The SOUTH PACIFIC suite presents the songs in chronological order, yet preserves the atmosphere of the show at the same time. Kunzel ably brings out the romance in "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Younger than Springtime," and contrasts it with the exotic and dreamlike "Bali Hai'i" and the comic "There is Nothing like a Dame" and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair". Although the suite ends quietly with a reprise of "Dites-Moi" rather than the reprise of "Some Enchanted Evening," within minutes we are swept into the KING AND I suite. Kunzel ably brings out the Oriental pathos in this score, and he captures the warmth of Anna's rapport with the King's Siamese children in "Getting to Know You", and with the King himself in "Shall We Dance." There is also romance in the love ballads "I Have Dreamed" and "We Kiss in a Shadow." Similarly, in the selection from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Kunzel conducts this until the orchestra soaks itself in the atmosphere of this Austrian R&H score. This SOUND OF MUSIC suite has more of a feel of the score compared to the bonus track on Sony's reissued version of the Broadway recording. You can almost feel as if you are following the progress of the Trapp family and how it lifts its spirits with the joy of music. Kunzel gives us a soaring version of the title song, and spirited versions of "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favourite Things." He balances it with the open-air quality of "Edelweiss" and "The Lonely Goatherd." Although this suite could have included "Something Good," the love ballad written for the film, the three recollections of the songs that were cut from the movie only last for a while. And, the towering version of "Climb Every Mountain" crowns this portion of the disc, and this sumptuously-produced recording. But, I should also mention the infectuous FLOWER DRUM SONG medley, where Kunzel turns this underrated score into a work of art, until it convinces you to buy the cast recording. And, don't forget about the brief CINDERELLA WALTZ, too, when Kunzel conducts it magically, until you feel like you are in the company of Cinderella and the Prince. He is able to show how this R&H score marked a comeback for R&H after the failiures of Me and Juliet, and Pipe Dream.

Overall, this glorious Rodgers and Hammerstein recording is guarunteed to make you want to pucker your lips out for a whistle or sing along (to paraphrase another revew for Kunzel's Disney Spectacular disc) - even if this recording is music only, and as long as you know the words to the songs (and you might know a large handful of them already.) There is always a certain magic in this fine CD that makes you feel like you're sitting in the theatre watching these musicals, until it makes you feel like it is truly, to borrow two R&H song titles, "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Something Wonderful" to be in Kunzel's company for this R&H offering. It would certainly be one recording that could make you feel willing to buy the complete cast recordings of the shows. And I guaruntee that it will make you feel willing to pull out your existing copies of the cast recordings to listen to them again. I also guaruntee that it will be a cornerstone in any Rodgers and Hammerstein collection, just as it is in mine. Recommended heartily to any Rodgers and Hammerstein enthusiast and to fans of Erich Kunzel's work. And, you can play it while reading the Richard Rodgers biography, Musical Stages, until Rodgers himself would count this as his favourite disc in the afterlife.

By the way, most of the arrangements for the suites on this CD were done by the veteran R&H orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett, and it surely adds to the appeal of this recording. This itself is enough to amount to the icing on the cake, since Kunzel conducts them well on here, and since this recording still allows the suites to have the original theatrical atmosphere. And, although this recording is like the Mauceri collection of the Rodgers & Hammerstein overtures in compiling orchestral suites of Rodgers & Hammerstein, I think that I like the Kunzel recording even more because Kunzel has more magic in his conducting of these suites.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2003-04-08

This is one of the best Erich Kunzel/Cincinnati Pops collections we own! A must for Rodgers and Hammerstein fans, too.

5 out of 5 stars Doin' It Her Way.......2004-05-08

What a great album this is and what such an underrated one it is. This woman can sing. There are some artists who just have good production on an album to make it sell but this one has that as well as a good voice which I can only describe as strong and smooth. For some reason her voice always reminds me of honey. I'd recommend this album to anyone that's after something to relax to aswell as for those romantic evenings. It's a more than decent album to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars UNDER RATED!.......2002-11-30

This was a very nice cd. I purchased it on cassette in 1997 & played it until the tape wore thin. This is truly a collectible.
All this woman needs is a concrete producer & promoter!

4 out of 5 stars A Good, Not Great Debut........2002-06-23

Her remake of Gloria Gaynor's disco hit, into a soul gem is a stroke of genius and one of many highlights here. Tight production, great sound quality and a fair share of variety make this a good CD. "Turned Away", "All Night, All Day" and "90 in The Red" are my favorite cuts and they all sparkle with a mid to late 90's commercial soul sheen, but there is also a bit too much filler to make this a true soul classic. The title track makes this worth owning, THIS is what a remake should really be!

5 out of 5 stars She will survive!.......2000-05-23

Being honest, I should say that I'm not really feeling a lot of female rnb/hip-hop, they just don't do it for me (apart from Missy) they chat/whine about money, who can do who better, but this was amazing.

I remember first hearing it at my friends house in 1996, and I bought it straight after. To this day, it's one of the best albums I own as well as one of the best rnb albums I own. I have a lot of respect for her and her music. Simply put, it's a wonderful piece of work.

It's real laid back, moody, jazzy - true fans of the genre will not be disappointed. She even stays clear of the commercial formulae by having tracks up to 6/7 mins long, and if you're wandering whether or not she can hold a track that long...she can.

I can't even pick any top tracks, because once it's on, it plays all the way through.

I'm honoured to have it.

Given the massive box-office success of the original Men in Black, the only real surprise was that it took Hollywood five years to crank out the loopy, CGI-laden sequel. Composer Danny Elfman keeps the original MIB creative team intact, weighing in with a typically energetic orchestral score that dutifully ratchets up the suspense and punctuates the action. But it's a largely connect-the-dots exercise; aside from the deliciously loungy pair of Austin Powers-savvy bossa novas that bookend his work here ("Worm Lounge #1 (Worms in Black)," "Worm Lounge #2"), there's a sometimes uncomfortable lack of originality (let alone melodicism) in much of what remains. The tense, workmanlike efficiency works fine with the film, but longtime fans may find this a decidedly McElfman listening experience. Still, the soundtrack ends on an a pair of appropriately goofy/cheesy notes: Tim Blaney's gravel-voiced Frank the Pug crooning "I Will Survive" with grating canine fervor and the duet of Will Smith and Tra-Knox gettin' jiggy with the hip-hop/Bond music hybrid "Black Suits Comin' (Nod Ya Head)." --Jerry McCulley

but the only song I like on this one is "Nod ya head (Black suits comin'). It's the original version in its entirety. Will Smith's "Greatest Hits" has a different version than this. If you buy MP3's online, then just download this one song. Otherwise, the CD is a waste of money. Sorry, Will!

4 out of 5 stars Elfman is back in black.......2002-11-04

Danny Elfman, having scored the first Men in Black is back again scoring the sequel. No other composer could have done it but Danny Elfman. This score is much more groovier than the first. Elfman uses the Men in Black theme much more in this one than in the first. It is not exactly the same as the theme from the first, as little variations are thrown in to make it a bit different. In fact, almost every track uses the M.I.B. theme in some way or another. When you first put the CD in the player, this hip-hop tune starts up. "Worm Lounge #1" is Elfman in crazy form with swinging trumpets, hip-hop bass, and quirky la la vocals. Don't try dancing to this one, it will make you look stupid. Most of the score is groovy sounding with electric guitars along with a rhythm section and a moderately sized orchestra. "Big Jeff" is a thrilling action cue, with firing brass and choir. The chorus is also utilized in other cues, such as "Headquarters". "The Real Story" and "Heart Thump" take a break from the quirkiness music and show a more mellow side. From "The Defense Begins" to "The Finale", the music really takes off and shines. A massive brass section and a thrilling choir showcase these tracks and show Elfman in top form. "I Will Survive", the classic Gloria Gaynor song, shows Tim Blaney singing as "Frank the Pug". It doesn't really sound like singing, but more like talking. Will Smith's song "Black Suits Comin'" is cool and better than his song from the first film. He too is a talented artist and a great actor. However, Elfman is the spotlight of this soundtrack and showcases his incredible writing talents throughout. A thoroughly enjoyable soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Really Great Cd, Elfman Keeps Gettin' Cooler and cooler..........2002-09-14

Well, here I am to report on yet another Danny Elfman score. With super-high expectations for the summer box-office, we were expecting some profound movies. What we got was having the top-grossing film of the summer, "Spider-Man", contain an Elfman score! YES! Now I am here to review "Men In Black 2". Although the first movie was done better and the score was a very common thing of the Elfman of that time, his methods have evolved. I sit here listening to a track from the first "MIB". Then, I will put on an "MIB2" song and compare. ...........Done. The verdict: the "MIB2" score is better than that of the first. "Men In Black 2" has a more frenetic feel than the first one. Plus, almost every track ends in one of the billion transformations of the "MIB" theme, which is a good thing. There's J's theme, that kind of Bond-esque "Do do....do do." There's also K's theme, the really light guitar melody, played at its most weirdly heart-wrenching best in the middle of "J Nabbed/K's Back", it is used again, very well, near the end of "The Light". I only have one question, where is Serleena's theme? She is the villain, all villains have themes. The Green Goblin had one, why can't Serleena have one?! Anyway, on "Chop-Chop", she doesn't get a theme but when you listen to it, you kinda sorta get the sense that shes there. "The Chase" is a really cool song, with synth, bongos, and orchestra in the background. You listen to it and its just really cool. It's kinda "slick" (no reference intended), in that way that only Elfman can deliver it to us, his ever adoring fans. Ah, "The Light". It delivers yet another transformation of the "MIB" theme, then after :25 it just calms down. It turns into someting really mellow and yet cosmic and choral at the same time. Elfman then delivers our pseudo love theme for J and Laura. To me, it isn't pseudo at all. It's a damn love theme to me. I think they should have kissed before she left. Crashing into a motif for the re-emergence of Serleena (she looked like an aerial view of Medusa's head). It calms down again with another showing of the love theme, crescendo-ing strings, to............A BANG FINALE!!! I told you all Elfman scores have one. (See: Batman - Original Motion Picture Score, review name "Elfman's Best Action Score). The CD could have done without Frank singing. Overall, BUY IT! Its really a good CD, if you want a cool vibe in your CD player.
