Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The movie version of The Rocky Horror Show has turned into such an enduring cult success that it has pretty much obliterated the fact that it all started with a stage show. And now Richard O'Brien's musical is back on stage, where some say it truly belongs (it was nominated for the category Best Revival of a Musical in the 2001 Tony Awards). With a great cast that includes Dick Cavett, Alice Ripley (Janet), Tom Hewitt (Frank 'N' Furter), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magenta), the revival fires on all cylinders. Note that while Joan Jett was in the cast as Columbia, she's not on the CD (Kristen Lee Kelly is). But Lea DeLaria, last seen stealing the show in On the Town, more than compensates by playing both Eddie (Meat Loaf in the movie!) and Dr. Scott--and doing great by both. As a bonus, the song "Once in a While" is back after being cut from the movie. Bursting with energy, this recording brings the rock back in Rocky. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite cast recordings.......2007-01-17
This was the first Rocky Horror album I've ever listened to besides the movie soundtrack. Despite the lack of Joan Jett as Columbia and the 2nd Usherette, this album is sweet. Daphne-Rubin Vega is perfect as Magenta. And Tom Hewlett 's interpretation as Frank N. Furter is just in sync with the character. But he's still no Tim Curry. And the rest of the cast is sublime. And with Dick Cavett as the Criminologist and famed lesbian comedienne Lea DeLaria as both Eddie and Dr. Scott is just excellent.
Thougt You Were The Candyman Didn't ya freggy!.......2006-06-22
I thought that this was gonna be just another edition of the Rocky Horror Show. But boy was I wrong.I loved it they really modernized and gave it more of a Rock flavor than in the original play which was more pop.I just loved how they had the Overture and Space shipa partof the cd.They really recreated great for broadway. When i heard that broadway was doing Then Rocky Horror Show I didn't know what to think.Because Rocky Horror had been an off-broadway show for many years. The thought of it being onBroadway was just amazing Because people back in the 70's and 80's always thought that The Rocky Horror Show was much too trashy to be put on Broadway.Because you always think about broadway plays as being classy and eligent. They didn't want a play about Sex and Horror and Gay Transvestites. But this was just a head turner.I loved it.It's definitely 5 stars. The cd quality was great. It was so professionally done and it was great.I think any RHS Fan will love it.This was no candyman!
The Rockiest Recording to Date.......2006-06-07
This 2000 Broadway revival of the cult classic THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW boasts a completely re-vamped orchestration of Richard O'Brien's score. This is certainly the most rock-fused version of these songs to date, and right from the "Overture" the listener can assume this. Many may not be able to accept this harder, bolder score and I myself am a bit skeptical, considering the more piano-driven and sci-fi sounding orchestrations of the film soundtrack or Roxy cast recording. However, it is so interesting to hear these songs done like this that I cannot help but enjoy it. The performances are half-and-half. Daphne Rubin-Vega belts out the opening number in that great gravelly voice she has, and Raul Esparzza sends chills down my spine every time I hear his two great solo moments ("The darkness must flow down the river...." and "Frank 'N' Furter, it's all over..."). Sebastian LaCause is amazing as Rocky, as thankless a part that is. Eddie and Dr. Scott being portrayed by a woman (Lea DeLaria) is one of the strangest casting decisions ever and is too distracting to be able to even listen to her (his? I don't know!!!) songs: "Hot Patootie" and "Eddie's Teddy." Tom Hewitt does his best as Frank 'N' Furter, but the character was so well defined by Tim Curry in the film (one of the most underrated performances ever) that one can't help but ignore him. I'd say that this recording is something every ROCKY HORROR fan should listen to; it just all depends on whether you like the new or original orchestrations.
Good recording, bad show........2006-03-10
Rocky Horror is an American institution. It's indelible, unforgettable, and entirely unique. But without the audience participation, the show is revealed - it's simply not very good. It's a passable (if dated) parody of '50s B-movies with a transvestite main character and some halfway decent songs. The show lives with and dies without an audience. The lyrics, the characters - nothing is half as fun without the audience throwing and shouting and bantering right along.
That said, this is a VERY good recording of what's there. Tom Hewitt does as good a job as anyone trying to fill Tim Curry's sequined heels, and brings some nice twists to the table instead of going the Curry-imitation route. Raul Esparza as Riff-Raff is electric - his rendition of "Time Warp" is unlike anything else you're likely to hear on a cast recording. He blasts it right into outer space, screaming like the world's going to end. Daphne Rubin-Vega is plenty of fun as Columbia, giving a nicely sinuous and raw-edged sexiness to the role. The orchestra gives their all to the new arrangements, and they sound crystal clear.
It's definitely the best recording of the show available, even sans Tim Curry.
Oh Daphne!.......2005-12-29
Most of the reviews have it right here - this production wasn't really Rocky at it's best. That being said, I must say that Daphne Ruben-Vega as magenta is probably one of the most interesting, refreshing, and note worthy things about this recording. Very cool in that regard.
That's All...

Boogie ON.......2007-03-09
I don't know what's with that other guy. Has he never heard recordings from the sixties before?! So the recording quality is not state of the art. Are we here to boogie or are we here to whine? Boo Hoo, Sister Sue. We're here to BOOGIE! Where else can you get texas roadhouse boogie? the Texas Jewboys? Try to find one of their albums, why don't you. I saw these guys live a couple of years ago. The first set was killer. So what if the band was sloppy drunk by the second set. They were supposed to be.
Get a recording studio!.......2006-08-21
I'm not sure what's up with these recordings. I've had three of them now, two from amazon and one from another seller. Why don't these guys do decent sound recordings? They sound like someone went into a bar on friday night and turned on a tape recorder. They are terrible! I own over 1500 cd's and this is by a long shot the worst recording quality i've ever heard. The recordings are tinny and distorted, with tons of midrange, and even some distortion! Whoever made these recordings needs to get an ear! The songs themselves are good if you like Commander Cody. The music is what you would expect from this band.

Great Album, Sadly, It's Hard To Find.......2005-12-08
The Commander's 2nd album, full of great truck drivin, gear jammin tunes, that will be a delight to the truck stop rockin' redneck in all of us. This album was the most difficult to track down on CD out of everything the good commander ever released. It was released in the early 90s, and was pulled from the catalog real fast, and like Country Casanova, remains rare, and worth quite a bit of money on CD today, due to it's rarity. The only complaint I have about the CD version of this disc, is the MCA "Compact Disc/Compact Price Bastardization of this album" which removed the nice artwork from the back cover, and the super cool picture of all the people dancing to an early live performance put on by CC/LPA...maybe one day it'll be released...untill then, if you have this rare gem on CD, or vynl, or tape,or 8 track, or whatever...be careful with it! There's no replacing it without some effort.
+1/2 - Super album of hippie trucker country, rock and swing.......2003-08-06
After inventing their unique brand of hippie-country-rock-boogie-woogie on their debut, the Airmen returned with a second helping dedicated to truckers and trucking. As on their first album, the band wrote and borrowed originals to mix with brilliantly picked covers. Newly penned classics include the country rockers, "Truck Stop Rock" and "Semi-Truck," the seductive, bluesy "Cravin' Your Love," and the old-timey country-gospel of "Kentucky Hills of Tennessee."
Covers include one of the best-ever readings of Terry Fell's "Truck Drivin' Man" and a scorching, bar-ready take of "Rip it Up." The Commander takes the microphone for Memphis' Curtis spoken blues, "It Should've Been Me," with a fine fat-toned sax solo from Andy Stein. Stein also swings his fiddle for the cajun-flavored "Diggy Liggy Lo."
The toughness of the trucker's life is sung in the classic "Lookin' at the World Through a Windshield," and in Blackie Ferrell's brilliant "Mama Hated Diesels." The loneliness of the road and the emotional wreckage a trucker's life levies on those left behind is one of country music's most powerful archetypes, and the Airmen play it for all it's worth.
Though the recording is a bit tinny in spots, the playing and singing are top-notch, and an essential part of the Airmen's ouvre. MCA's put this out on CD and then let it drop from their catalog, which means you either have to track down a used copy or see if the Commander himself has any left in his personal stash.
4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.

I heard these guys live at JavaOne in San Francisco, and immediately knew I had to have the CD. Great Stuff! Spacey, but with an eastern flair, and a great beat. You can cha-cha to some of it too! :-) Highly recommended, and also recommended to see in person. (Check out venusians.com for some photos.)

Heard the Venusians at the Oregon Country Fair 7/01 and they are the most refreshing, innovative group in quite some time. Each track is different. Can't sit still to this great, spacey music!
Right on!.......2000-09-01
I dig it much. A cross between Peter Gabriel, Red Hot Chili Peppers and a being from an alien craft. Way funky.

"Welcome to the Planet " can be considered a great link in the revolution back to quality music by quality musicians.

Customer Reviews:
Soulful, Funky and Hip Rock.......2003-08-04
If you are the type of person that has been asking yourself, "where is the integrity in music today?" this is the album for you. I think my feelings for this album would be best expressed by quoting words first spoken by the brilliant artist Prince during last year's One Night Alone Tour, "real music, by real musicians, for real music lovers."
Not quite as fun as their first EP The Starcandy Incident, Welcome to the Planet is more mature and cohesive. Their new material is a little less glossy-pop and a little more brooding rock.
Don't get me wrong, the rhythm section is as funky as ever. Joe's drumming alone is reason enough to buy the album. The man is better than any drum machine on the market. There is not a single beat out of place; not one drum or cymbal is struck if it's not absolutely on time, in place, and absolutely necessary. Add unique, tastefully melodic bass lines in the league of Flea and Key Low and Hujo end up constructing the foundation for a band suitable for a downtown office high-rise. All the guitar and vocals have to do in not cloud the issue, and they don't.
The guitar and vocals add two more dynamic colors to the vibrant soundscape. The vocal melodies are clean and articulate and beautifully complement the rhythm section. The fact that you can understand every word the first time adds to the appeal. The vocals are emotive, sensitive and poignant.
Welcome to the Planet is chock full of soulful, funky and hip rock tunes that don't miss. Pop it in and just push play because you won't want to skip a single track. A true album, this is a collection of songs that complement each other well and flow from one song to the next.
