Although he's described playing the role of Roger as a mere "stepping stone," Adam Pascal made it to the cover of Newsweek thanks to his part in the Rent phenomenon--and the dramatic edge he brought to his doomed character. While he's continued his work in musical theater with the blockbuster Elton John/Tim Rice show Aida, Pascal returns to his roots as a rock singer on Model Prisoner. His debut solo CD--with backing from Saturday Night Live alumni band members--comes out on Internet-based Sh-K-Boom Records, a label interested in bridging the musical theater-pop music gap for a hip young audience. In fact, Pascal's pre-Rent years were spent fronting a band called Mute; the singer's brand of raw energy makes it clear he's spent a lot of time admiring the likes of Axl Rose and Queensryche. No doubt that the rough passion of his delivery goes some way toward compensating for the repeatedly formulaic quality of his tunes (Pascal wrote 10 of the album's 12 songs)--which can range from leftover hair-metal choruses to dirty-blues-framed laments. But what always comes through is the unmistakable intensity of Pascal's voice, and its ability to shift and shade the moods being expressed. Pascal may be at a crossroads, but he's determined not to be held prisoner by the patterns his fame has cut out so far. --Thomas MayDescription
After years spent in rock bands, Adam Pascal made his off-Broadway debut as Roger in "Rent," going on to win Obie and Theater World Awards plus Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations for his performance. He is currently starring on Broadway in Elton John and Tim Rice's "Aida." "Model Prisoner," his debut solo CD of original compositions, is a deeply personal album that is the culmination of years of work as a musician and as a writer. The album brings together Adam's roots in rock music with his passionate performance style. Songs: Liken a Razor, Just Here to the Left of You, Every Time Around, Model Prisoner, Which Way to Nowhere, Time It Takes to Fall, Ordinary Boy, Cellophane Sun, The One That Got Away, Precious Little Meltdown, Rhyme and Reason, Undiscovered.Customer Reviews:

In His Own Sweet Way: A Tribute to Dave Brubeck

You might ask: why a tribute to Dave Brubeck on John Zorn's killer-pedigree, Japanaese Avant imprint? The answer is anyone's guess, since In His Own Sweet Way falls outside the scope of Zorn's Jewish-composer series on Tzadik (which includes the stellar two-CD Burt Bacharach homage). Listening to the collection's 14 tracks, the "why" is altogether irrelevant. Brubeck purists will cringe from the opening bars of Dave Slusser's electronics-laden "Blue Shadows in the Street" onward, except for Bill Frisell's poetic acoustic guitar take on "Summer Song," Medeski Martin & Wood's swinging "Tokyo Traffic," and cellist Erik Friedlander's lyric reading of "Winter Ballad." But anyone familiar with Brubeck's own searching music--especially the stuff of the 24 Classic Original Recordings, the Octet, and virtually all the strange rhythmic studies--will find this whole affair thrilling, if in a sometimes skewered way. The Ruins doing "Blue Rondo a la Turk" create a rockish juggernaut; Dave Douglas's collage of his own multi-instrumental playing on "Nomad" rings true to the tune's title; and Eyvind Kang's electronic, beat-rich "Calcutta Blues" is utterly poignant when the viola is steering the tune. Michael Blake's Slowpoke makes an elongated swamp thing out of "Sixth Sense," and Joey Baron does a fantastically melodic Joe Morello with bassist Tony Scherr on "Three to Get Ready." As anyone who knows Zorn (or any other musician on the CD) would expect, this tribute is all over the map. So was Brubeck in his heyday; it's all in the same spirit. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
A fine tribute........2004-05-16
There are acoustic / free- interpretations of the material by pianist Anthony Coleman and MMW. Pianist Uri Caine pounds out a swaggering performance on "Far More Blues" and Sex Mob belts out a distinctive grinding dirge on "Jumpin". Pachora and David Krakauer dig into a middle-eastern music stream for their renditions. Solo contemplative pieces are rendered by guitarist Bill Frisell and cellist Erik Friedlander. Drummer Joey Baron and bassist Tony Scherr deliver a cool swinging track and Slowpoke eases out a smokey blues groove. Dave Slusser, Eyvind Kang and Dave Douglas contribute the most experimental tracks to the tribute, with Douglas' solo-overdubbed work resembling late period electric Miles Davis as filtered through Sun Ra and modally based eastern musics. The Ruins deliver what may be the standout track of the whole disc however. Their bass and drum prog-rock workout of "Blue Rondo A La Turk" is not to be missed. Worth the price alone.
