Although he's described playing the role of Roger as a mere "stepping stone," Adam Pascal made it to the cover of Newsweek thanks to his part in the Rent phenomenon--and the dramatic edge he brought to his doomed character. While he's continued his work in musical theater with the blockbuster Elton John/Tim Rice show Aida, Pascal returns to his roots as a rock singer on Model Prisoner. His debut solo CD--with backing from Saturday Night Live alumni band members--comes out on Internet-based Sh-K-Boom Records, a label interested in bridging the musical theater-pop music gap for a hip young audience. In fact, Pascal's pre-Rent years were spent fronting a band called Mute; the singer's brand of raw energy makes it clear he's spent a lot of time admiring the likes of Axl Rose and Queensryche. No doubt that the rough passion of his delivery goes some way toward compensating for the repeatedly formulaic quality of his tunes (Pascal wrote 10 of the album's 12 songs)--which can range from leftover hair-metal choruses to dirty-blues-framed laments. But what always comes through is the unmistakable intensity of Pascal's voice, and its ability to shift and shade the moods being expressed. Pascal may be at a crossroads, but he's determined not to be held prisoner by the patterns his fame has cut out so far. --Thomas May

I only got this cd today. But man, it is GREAT. I love his voice so much!! "precious little meltdown", "model prisoner" and "just here to the left of you" are my favs. But I am sure it will change.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome debut.......2005-02-15

As an Adam Pascal fan, I was anxious to hear this, yet nervous that it would be less than perfect... and I was wrong - I really like this cd. The songs are "singable" - Liken A Razor and Rhyme and Reason are my favorites. For a free preview of him playing an accoustic version of it, go to (...)

5 out of 5 stars Good CD!.......2004-08-24

Very good! I only had the privilege of listening to a few songs, but I love them all! Unfortunately, when I tried to buy it at Borders, they said it wasn't available from anybody. Not even the distributor. So I couldn't get it. But anyway, after hearing Rent and Aida, I really thought of this as a refreshing alternative to my...obsession, if you will, with Broadway stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Adam Pascal: Model Prisioner.......2004-03-26

As a avid fan of RENT, I had bought the RENT OBC about 5 years ago and basically havent stopped listening to it since. RENT was the best and most orginal show B'Way had seen in decades. And upon listening to this CD I heard this golden voice of raw power and soul. It was Adam Pascal. And as he has been equally brilliant in everything he's done since(Aida, Cabaret).
So when he came out with this CD about 2 years ago, I bought it. I must say, I loved it instantly. Adam has a very distinctive voice. Filled with power, emotion and soul. His voice is ear-shattering....But in a really good way. And on this wonderful music journey he hits shades of 80's hair band rock, Heavy Metal, Pop, Country and infuses it with fresh modern rock for just a very strong CD.

5 out of 5 stars Best ever!!.......2004-01-25

5 out of 5 stars ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23

This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

You might ask: why a tribute to Dave Brubeck on John Zorn's killer-pedigree, Japanaese Avant imprint? The answer is anyone's guess, since In His Own Sweet Way falls outside the scope of Zorn's Jewish-composer series on Tzadik (which includes the stellar two-CD Burt Bacharach homage). Listening to the collection's 14 tracks, the "why" is altogether irrelevant. Brubeck purists will cringe from the opening bars of Dave Slusser's electronics-laden "Blue Shadows in the Street" onward, except for Bill Frisell's poetic acoustic guitar take on "Summer Song," Medeski Martin & Wood's swinging "Tokyo Traffic," and cellist Erik Friedlander's lyric reading of "Winter Ballad." But anyone familiar with Brubeck's own searching music--especially the stuff of the 24 Classic Original Recordings, the Octet, and virtually all the strange rhythmic studies--will find this whole affair thrilling, if in a sometimes skewered way. The Ruins doing "Blue Rondo a la Turk" create a rockish juggernaut; Dave Douglas's collage of his own multi-instrumental playing on "Nomad" rings true to the tune's title; and Eyvind Kang's electronic, beat-rich "Calcutta Blues" is utterly poignant when the viola is steering the tune. Michael Blake's Slowpoke makes an elongated swamp thing out of "Sixth Sense," and Joey Baron does a fantastically melodic Joe Morello with bassist Tony Scherr on "Three to Get Ready." As anyone who knows Zorn (or any other musician on the CD) would expect, this tribute is all over the map. So was Brubeck in his heyday; it's all in the same spirit. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A fine tribute........2004-05-16

Jazz compilation / Tribute albums have a tendency to fall into stylistic ruts more often than not. Tributes to past masters of the Jazz canon usually are very traditional in scope and some what sterile. But not this one. John Zorn's all star cast contributes 14 tunes, most of them lesser know Brubeck compositions (there is no "Take 5"). Their interpretations of these tunes are as varied as the artists themselves.

There are acoustic / free- interpretations of the material by pianist Anthony Coleman and MMW. Pianist Uri Caine pounds out a swaggering performance on "Far More Blues" and Sex Mob belts out a distinctive grinding dirge on "Jumpin". Pachora and David Krakauer dig into a middle-eastern music stream for their renditions. Solo contemplative pieces are rendered by guitarist Bill Frisell and cellist Erik Friedlander. Drummer Joey Baron and bassist Tony Scherr deliver a cool swinging track and Slowpoke eases out a smokey blues groove. Dave Slusser, Eyvind Kang and Dave Douglas contribute the most experimental tracks to the tribute, with Douglas' solo-overdubbed work resembling late period electric Miles Davis as filtered through Sun Ra and modally based eastern musics. The Ruins deliver what may be the standout track of the whole disc however. Their bass and drum prog-rock workout of "Blue Rondo A La Turk" is not to be missed. Worth the price alone.

3 out of 5 stars Young Jazz Guns' Dave Festival.......2000-06-14

This disc will be attractive for those interested in contemporary jazz players or fusion of jazz and international music or, of course, Dave Brubeck. I was attracted as this cd included the name Bill Frisell (He is my favorite and so is 'Summer Song' ) and Dave Douglas. The musics are nice when you sit on the corner of cafe in Paris or walking around maze of paths in Venice. Scene changes.

The only short coming is there is not enough of Sheila Raye. She has one of those voices you could set back and lose time in. She is an example of the fruit not falling far from the tree. I can't wait til she does another CD.
