Dreamcatcher, not listed as a greatest-hits collection, is made up of previously recorded works. Secret Garden, Irish violinist Fionnuala (fi-NOO-la) Sherry, and Norwegian pianist/keyboardist Rolf Lovland, along with various guest musicians, always manage to surprise and execute their craft with a remarkable gracefulness of sound. Lush, rich, full-bodied, and passionate, Secret Garden stands eye-to-eye with other successful Celtic/world-music hybrids such as Loreena McKennitt and Clannad. Highlighted by the ethereal vocal styling of Gunnhild Tvinnereim ("Nocturne") and the tender laments of Karen Matheson ("Prayer"), Secret Garden weaves a mystical tapestry of classic Oriental notes, Irish flutes, deep bodhran, and bold violins. With the crystalline quality of pure water, Secret Garden descends over one's spirit in a tranquil waterfall of renewal, as demonstrated in "Sigma" and "Songs from a Secret Garden." "Elan," which originally appeared on the album Dawn of a New Century, reflects the fire that burns at the heart of Secret Garden. The song soars with a wild, sea-swept energy, a true soundscape of white-sand beach and blue sky. A bonus cut, "Last Present," closes out Dreamcatcher with a simple, balanced melody--poised and inspiring. Dreamcatcher, a collection of some of the best musical moments of Secret Garden, is a fine acknowledgement of an inventive group of musicians who are consistently setting a high and impressive standard in modern Celtic/New Age music. --Leslie R. Marini
Customer Reviews:
Secret Garden has been a secret for TOO long!!.......2007-01-21
Secret Garden's Dreamcatcher weaves an ethereal pageant of wonder and joy. My initial thought was "It sounds like a movie soundtrack of some mysterious delightful romance." Liner notes say "People tell us that our music is 'visual' and 'evocative' It has been suggested it music to a film yet to be seen." Imagine that!
If you like Celtic music, you will love Secret Garden.
GORGEOUS MUSIC.......2006-07-25
This music is so immaculately beautiful. It's a new twist if you love Loreena McKennit as well as Enya. You might also love the double CD, The Celtic Circle: Legendary Music from a Mystic World. I know I do.
Magical.......2006-04-16
My husband and I signed up for a helicopter tour of glaciers near Juneau AK. The weather had been quite foggy/rainy all day and I was certain that they would cancel the trip. Then I was terrified when they didn't - -sure we'd crash into something with all the mist.
The pilot put in the Dreamcatcher CD as he prepared for takeoff and what had been intensely stressful for me became one of the most peaceful and beautiful -- even magical -- experiences of my life.
To this day, I can hear the music, close my eyes and be hovering over the glaciers. Or I can be looking at the pictures I took from the copter and hear the music in my mind.
The two are forever linked for me.
An honest joy.......2006-03-18
I like traditional/world/folk instrumentals, and contemporary instrumentals (such as those of Yanni). I don't particularly like Irish/Celtic music; however, I ADORE Secret Garden.
If you're new to Secret Garden, Dreamcatcher might provide you with a clue as to what they're about. Dreamcatcher is not my favorite of all the CDs graced by their name, but it does suffice in introducing one to the flavor and depth that constitutes Secret Garden.
Of these tracks, I recommend "Nocturne," "Moving," "Sona," "Passacaglia," "Elan," "In Our Tears," "Steps," "Adagio" (!!!!!), & "Dawn of a New Century."
Personally, a few of my favorites are Dawn of a New Century for "Children of the River," earthsongs for "Fields of Fortune" and "Lotus," and once in a red moon for "Elegie." White Stones is also amazing, especially "Poéme" and "Sanctuary;" I think these 2 songs are about as lovely, deep, transcendent, meaningful, and emotional as is possible.
Secret Garden is, in a word, wonderful. If you enjoy excellent, introspective, unique, quality songs and instrumentals, then please consider this awesome duo of amazing talent! As far as I am concerned, they are unsurpassed.
Breathtaking!.......2006-01-27
What a great album! What a great album! I bought it from a bookstore as a tryout, and I'm IMPRESSED! The entire album is breathtaking (and I don't usually use this word), it starts with a great song (Nocturne), and ends with another great song (Last Present), and I'm disappointed when each song ends, craving for more. The vocals of this album is great, and the instrumentals are exceptional. Current New Age albums are not as good as this album. This album is up there with the other older New Age albums.

UNT Wind Ensemble is Phenomenal.......2007-01-04
This is a very professional group that makes consistently superb recordings. As a student I had the opportunity to participate in a few music clinics with Eugene Corporon and they were always wonderful experiences. I absolutely respect his work and the musicianship of the UNT wind ensemble and hold them both in the highest regards.
Exceptional Klavier release.......2000-05-22
The Klavier Wind Recording Project, already preparing to release its twenty-second and twenty-third discs this autumn, has produced a wonderful collection of contemporary music for band in addition to identifying several important pieces of the standard repetoire. This particular 1998 release, while full of interesting music, likely only holds appeal for the so-called "band aficionado." The selections on here constitute one of the darker Klavier releases to date, containing music of a somewhat more somber nature.
Opening with Carnegie Mellon-based composer Nancy Galbraith's brighly orchestrated work about mischievous elfin beings, "Danza de los Duendes" provides an excellent opener somewhat reminiscent of John Adam's writing. From there, the title track, Walter Mays' 1996 award-winning "Dreamcatcher" follows. The work, dealing with the Ojibwa belief about the nature of good and bad dreams features quotations of an actual Ojibwa folk tune in many of its melodic motives. Leslie Bassett's 1985 commission to compose a lullaby specifically for band, in particular, for the the conductor's newborn daughter, Leslie, utilizes the composer's "trademark compositional technique." More specifically, a non-serialized twelve-tone method. While the only other Bassett work that I am personally familiar with is his trombone quartet (although he has written a considerable body of music, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Variations for Orchestra"), I still remain unimpressed with the very brief "Lullaby for Kirsten" despite repeated hearings.
Another Pulitzer Prize-winner, Eastman-faculty member Joseph Schwantner, and his ethreal "From a Dark Millenium" provides one of the true high points on this album, although I must agree with a previous review about its disappointing sonics. As in his other two works for wind ensemble (also available from Klavier), the piano contributes a very interesting timbre to the already varied band palette. David Gillingham's 1996 "Waking Angels," inspired by Olga Broumas poem on AIDS, "emanates the mysteriousness, pain, and ruthlessness of the disease...through the imagery of music." Prefaced by Will Thompson's "Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is Calling" (of which Gillingham derives some melodic motiff), the work is very interesting and wholly satisfying. Gillingham, currently on the faculty at Central Michigan, is enjoying growing popularity for many of his band works. To conclude this disc, German-composer Rolf Rudin's two-part "Der Traum de Oenghus," based on an Irish fairy tale dealing with nightly visions and dementia (in keeping with the overall theme), with its shimmering introduction, violent (and sometimes martial) middle sections, and quiet closing pages provides a very satisfying finish to this Klavier disc.
The North Texas Wind Symphony under Corporn turns in polished performances, at times full of warthm and brilliance. Technically clean and with good intonation, this disc highlights exceptional wind band literature that would otherwise wait years to be recorded. Recommended for serious band enthusiasts or those simply interested in finding band music of a less "oom-pa" oriented nature.
Wonderful music and wonderful recording.......2000-01-08
I am a huge fan of the Klavier Wind Recording project and this is one of the best CDs yet released. There is a nice balance of works here that center around a common theme. From the bright sound of the Galbraith work to the dark and ponderous "From a Dark Millenium" by Joseph Schwantner, this CD has much to offer its listeners. I am always amazed at the fact that these are college level musicians and not professionals. Everything is technically precise and at the same time very musical and the recording is clear and very well balanced. This is can said for all of the recordings in the series as well. I wish Corporon and Klavier all the luck and hope they continue to deliver such high quality music.

More incredible work from Eugene Corporon!.......1999-12-03
Once again, Corporon's integrity shines through with this effort, a worthy addition to his numerous wind symphony recordings. I must disagree with the criticism of the Schwanter in the previous review. From a Dark Millenium is not titled "For Percussion" like the other mentioned piece. The balance is probably intended to make sure that every line in the music is heard. It is still loud enough to shake the trunk of my car. Overall, the recording deserves much accolade.

Not Deep Purple!.......2003-01-31
"Dreamcatcher" isn't anything like Deep Purple... Of course that is not the reason this album isn't that good. The reason is that the songs just don't work, except "That's why God is singing the blues".
The best rock vocalist ever??.......2002-09-25
Maybe yes! Mr. Ian Gillan: a real master of vocals!! All his work, in Deep Purple or solo, are great, each of them has its own magic. Maybe that's why Ritchie Blackmore was always so envy of him...
Born in 1945, Gillan continues to deliver strong music even today. he can abrange a lot of musical styles without selling out. He can flert with different sounds without making lousy music. He's a great composer, simply as that. One of the best EVER.
Now, let's talk about DREAMCATCHER. It's a melodic, envolving, beautiful album. Alright, it's definitely not about hard rock, pure and simple. It has some new textures, some new idead, some hand-picked covers. It has it all!!! The production is not so great, I don't even know who played bass, keyboards and drums here. But the album can be listened from the first to the last track with a smile on your lips! A gem!!
CAn't hardly recognize Gillan here..........2002-03-16
I couldn't hardly recognize Gillan here. The album is weak, poppish, something really weird.
INTELIGGENT ALBUM WRITTEN BY A GREAT MUSICIAN.......2001-11-09
This album by Gillan is about music, not formulas, not rotules like "rock", "jazz" or whatever. Gillan smartly used his time outside Purple commitments to record some different stuff. That was not the case in the MR. UNIVERSE / GLORY ROAD / FUTURE SHOCK days, when he had not Purple to release his full rockers, and so did it with his own band. No. Now, with Purple going strong and strong with Steve Morse on board, there was no need for Gillan release and old-fashioned rocking album. If he did that, I would be dissapointed. DREAMCATCHER is interesting since the first page of the booklet, when Gillan talks about the recent passing away of his father. The songs are well crafted and emotional; the production is simple. I just don't know if all drums and bas are electronic, because the credits only contain Gillan and his long time mate Steve Morris on guitar.
Past his prime?.......2001-09-11
I thought that with Gillan, how can I miss? This is one of the worst Gillan cd's I have ever heard, not an interesting memorable track on the entire cd. Gillan fans be warned.

Look out guys, these ladies can swing!.......2004-11-11
This CD is perfect for everyone who loves jazz, and even for those who don't realize they love jazz (they will after listening to Dreamcatcher!). The very first time I listened to it, I found myself tapping my feet, swinging along, and even trying to anticipate the next track.
This group shows that the ability to play top-notch jazz and swing is not limited to men - the women of Seattle are a major force, and their future is very bright!
swojo rocks!.......2004-10-27
I picked this CD up at a "swojo" performance at Jazz Alley earlier this month and it kicks a**! Great tunes, great section playing, great soloists (Angela Smith (trpt), Ann Reynolds (piano), Sheryl Clark (tenor) ), and fantastic guest artist contributions from stellar Seattle vocalist Greta Matassa, tenor player Sue Orfield, and vibraphonist Susan Pascal. Great tunes, including originals from the music director, Daniel Barry--really a lovely and well-done recording! -deb
Big band is alive and well!.......2004-10-26
This is a great CD for any one who likes their big bands to play their music from the heart. The section playing is superb and the soloing is terrific. A real find!

Secret Garden - Best of.......2000-08-19
This is a "good news - bad news" review since this CD is a compilation of already released Secret Garden material. If you're not yet a Secret Garden fan, this is a wonderful and delightful means of introduction. If Secret Garden is already in your collection, then you have to think twice. Songs on this CD are from their previous (excellent!) releases, "Songs from a Secret Garden" (tracks 1,5,6,12,14&15), "White Stones" (3,8,11,13&16) and "Dawn of a New Century" (2,4,7,9,10,17&18).
If you're not yet a Secret Garden fan, then I strongly recommend this CD for it's breadth of introduction to their material. Imagine a tall, gracious and strong marble piller with strings of flowering vines running up it - that's Secret Garden. Strong Danish melodies with a Celtic violin weaving throughout, supported by an evocative blend of vocals. And, should you have the chance to experience them live, don't miss it. Incredible!!
Nothing New!.......2000-08-19
While this album may be a good choice for someone new to this group, all of the songs are on the three previous releases! A pretty good sampling of the very mellow Secret Garden sound.
