Welsh warbler Donna Lewis is a curious animal indeed. Given her proficiency with synth keyboards and her unabashed love for flowery textures, she appears to be wandering into faux-Kate Bush territory, her thoughts floating in the stars. But Lewis has a quirk that always brings her back down to earth: she's a sucker for a good hook. Remember her singsong 1996 hit "I Love You Always Forever"? This "thinking man's pop" schematic is echoed several times over on her sophomore album. "Harvest Moon" functions on such a childishly simple level, it almost feels like a nursery rhyme. "Falling," its rhythms bounding like Jell-O, plugs into a sunshiny '60s optimism that feels honest, not arch. And the minimal piano-set-to-metronome-beat "I Could Be the One" is kept aloft by Lewis's charmingly breathy vocals. She occasionally overreaches, as on the quasi-industrial "Beauty and Wonder" (try as she might, this lady just can't sound threatening) and the funned-up "Love Him." But Lewis has her ABBA/Kate niche all staked out and finely feathered, so it's easy to forgive her for a couple of indiscretions. --Tom Lanham

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2006-05-12

This is a fantastic CD! Its completely mesmerizing. Behind Donna Lewis's voice calm and soothing voice are very sophisiticated and heart-felt lyrics. Lewis has excellent control of her voice, letting it range from soft whispers to passionate refrains as the tide of the songs rises and falls.

4 out of 5 stars An underrated pop gem.......2003-11-20

Donna Lewis has never been given the respect she deserves. Aside from the industry award for the Most Played Song of 1996 on US radio, her talent has gone largely unrecognized beyond "I Love You Always Forever." Her second album, Blue Planet, has some really lovely moments. Timeless production and real musical restraint make this well worth owning for any "thinking" pop fan.

5 out of 5 stars Still radiant after the test of time.......2002-07-06

In 1999 I wrote the review attached below. I have only written two Amazon reviews in my life so that itself speaks to the power of this CD. Virtually all of the songs on this CD mesmerize and bring one to a new place. Some instantly and some after worming their way in over time. Deeply romantic and introspective, magical, subtle, strong, pioneering, deceptively simple. I came across the music video in a lonely hotel room in Panang Malaysia while there alone on business. I heard the song "I can be the one" on the tv behind me, swung around gripped by it's magnetic power, and have had a new space carved in my romantic soul ever since.

Following written in 1999.
I had never heard of Donna Lewis until I saw her music video of "I can be the one". I was writing on the laptop, the tv on in
the background in a hotel room in S.E. Asia. She came on, and I was stopped in my tracks. I was mesmerized, and have yet
to fully recover. Later, I got the Blue Planet Album, and found most of it only Ok. Some of it grows on you. "I can be the
one" stayed fresh through many many playings however. It speaks at a visceral level. It beckons to some primal need.
Inspired.

5 out of 5 stars Blue Planet - Perfection.......2001-12-31

This CD is the most beautiful and perfect CD in existence. I am not kidding. The wonderful songs on this leave (again) nothing to be desired. The songs are all wonderful. ...

4 out of 5 stars Pop at it's best.......2000-11-16

Donna Lewis is one of the greatest contemporary singer song writters and at the same time, one of the most underrated ones. Don't let the childish voice to mislead you ! This CD is full of inspiration and sensuality - a divine soothing breeze for a cynical hi-thec age.As an avid rock fan, I find Donna lewis as a superb pop artist.

5 out of 5 stars good work from a great band.......2004-09-09

I have seen these guys over the years in New York. GREAT live band. Really good CD but these guys ROCK live. The CD just scratches the surface. Jon Paris is a great and soulful blues guy. His bassist of many years is the best woman or man live.
The rock the universe and now the planet. Buy this for your archive.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-06-06

Jon Paris is a New York bluesman.

This cd rocks.

Jon released his first cd in 1995 -- it took nearly 10 years to get this second cd out. This represents an enormous artistic leap forward in every respect.

Jon shows a clear artistic vision and style that I love. He shows a virtuosity in his guitar playing that moves him to the top ranks of blues-rock guitarists. And the harp parts he puts on a few tracks show he is also a great harp player.

Jon played with Johnny Winter for years, then with Bo Diddley, and frequently sits in with Les Paul in New York. He worked with Muddy Waters in Muddy's Johnny Winter days, Chuck Berry from time to time, and other blues and rock fathers. He has internalized all the lessons he learned and has finally developed a strong original wonderful artistic style and identity that made it to cd.

I know in my heart there's a lot more to come from Jon Paris. Check out "Blue Planet." It's a gas.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational, pure and simple........1999-03-19

Whoever thought to put both film soundtracks on one CD was a genius.

Blue Planet gives an incredibly rich view of the delicate yet intense planet we inhabit. The music is surreal, almost dreamy.

The Dream is Alive captures, for me at least, a renewed enthusiasm and energy in our space program. It also reminds us that venturing into a new frontier is rought with uncertainty and danger, as evidenced by Challenger.

This CD is inspirational, pure and simple.

The Blue Planet is a collection of pieces that present a common thread of expression using lyrical songs as well as instrumentals. This expression of David's ability to create a mood or image with his words and music is another interesting extension of the over-used category for "folk" and "acoustic". Listening to this work you will again be able to travel both backwards and forwards through the history of popular music.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Genius.......2005-08-27

Chuck Greenberg was one of the true geniuses of modern new age/jazz. A wonderful melodist, a more than competent instrumentalist, a far better than average composer and a great lead musician or sidekick. This CD shows him at his best, although there were some unbelievable duets with Chuck and Will Ackerman, too. The duets here are with Alex DeGrassi, who ain't too bad a guitarist himself. As usual, Chuck is brilliant, melodic and wonderful. Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Both less -- and more! -- than Shadowfax.......2003-03-27

Recorded at a time when Shadowfax faced a very uncertain future, this album by group leader Chuck Greenberg showed a side of the man's music that hadn't quite shown up on the most recent band releases. The other group members were becoming increasingly involved in the songwriting, so Chuck had accumulated quite a backlog of material.

On his own album ,we are missing some sides of the band's multi-faceted musical personality. The emphasis on various ethnic percussion mixtures, or the gentle acoustic or dynamic electric guitar parts don't really show up. Chuck pretty much sticks to beautiful, gentle pieces based on keyboards, over which he solos distintively with his trademark wind instruments, sax and lyricon.

These pieces, though, are highly melodic and engaging, showing the full range of Chuck's writing, performing and produicing skills. The one departure is the amusing "Two Headed Alarm Clock", with a very funky electric guitar rhythm and lyricon all over the place. Very fun!

If you think music labeled "New Age" is dull background music, then this album will change your mind. It's getting harder to find, so get it and open up to the great music of Chuck Greenberg. Then, check out his work with Shadowfax.

5 out of 5 stars Very typical of Chuck Greenberg, meaning wonderful.......2002-06-13

This is Chuck Greenberg's first, and only, album under his own name, and it is well worth having. Mr. Greenberg has contributed to many albums by other fine musicians, as well as to the great group "Shadowfax", but I have not heard him play any better than he does on this album. Just the track "No Long Goodbyes" is worth many times the price of the disk. Please, if you like music, buy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Close your eye's and listen..................2000-11-26

The CD "From A Blue Planet", by Chuck Greenberg, is a must for everyone who enjoys Instrumental Music. Textures of intertwined sounds and movements, best describes this wonderful experience. Violin, Guitar, Saxophone, Flute, Drums, all blending together to evoke emotions from the listener.

My only regret is that I am unable to find anything else by Mr. Greenberg. So scoop it up, share it with friends, you will not be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Timeless:.......2000-04-12

That's what we call all of the late Chuck's work. What makes it so? The failure to duplicate. New Age Music has evolved into a generic blend, but there has only been One Chuck Greenberg and this album is his first and only solo endeavor. Originally released in 1991, many consider it to be his finest ever. My favorite track is "Two-Headed Alarm Clock," named after the Greenberg twins by Alex De Grassi, who also adds some of his finest guitar work on tracks like "The Secret of Time." Audiophiles who've come to expect the finest in sound quality from Chuck and Shadowfax will not be disappointed. Nine years later, this impeccably recorded album remains superior to most music released today.

John Patton's career goes back over 40 years. He actually scored several hits by Lloyd Price (remember Personality ???) before a fruitful association with the likes of GRANT GREEN and Blue Note Records. - - From the begining John distinguished himself for a unique style of Jazz organ playing. If you're looking for just another Jimmy Smith copycat... forget this one. John is a founding member of two schools of the B-3, one the "heavy" experimental one, which would be taken over by Larry Young, and the other SOUL JAZZ, which would be taken over by Reuben Wilson, Charles Earland and countless others. BIG JOHN PATTON though is the roots. And here he is in the '90s with a sound that's the perfect blend between classic soul Jazz organ playing and hints of things to come. This album is one of his best. Earthy, Unconventional, hip and lot's of energy. John is alive and well, so keep an eye out for him - - I recently saw him in NYC with Reuben Wilson and he was hotter than ever. GET THIS ALBUM then dig deep into his classics then let me know what you think.

Well we have all see the documentary, an incredible collection of footage superbly narrated by the one and only David Attenborough. One of the things that made the series was the enigmatic and inspiring music by George Fenton. Some of the best from the series is on this CD, but alas there is much missing. Still, there is plenty to keep you going. If you enjoyed the series and loved the music then this is the CD for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Blue Planet.......2007-01-07

Only containing about an hours worth of music from an eight hour proram, needless to say that there is missing music. However, the music presented is great. Some cues are expanded, and some are only a feeling of an entire episode. But overall, this is a great listen. The show was fantastic in almost every way, and the music in the series plays well with the images. The soundtrack is worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Georges Fenton à son meilleur.......2003-04-17
