Album Description

Few artists have created such visionary and influential electronic music as Alex Paterson and his various incarnations of The Orb. The Orb's blissed-out music helped define the emerging ambient-techno/house genres blending natural sounds, spoken-word, dub bass lines and constantly shifting beats with a sense of humor, rolling rhythms and exhilarating samples to revolutionise UK dance clubs and '90s rave culture. Now after the resounding success of the earlier limited edition, Malicious Damage is proud to re-release this glorious first volume of Orb treasures from Alex Paterson's spherical archives. The track "Mummy Don't" has been replaced by "angel 3 dub" Covering fifteen years of conspiracy and collaboration with some of the biggest names in electronic music including Jimmy Cauty, Andy Hughes, Thomas Fehlmann, Nina Walsh, Fil le Gonidec, Vincent McDonald, Guy Pratt, Dom Beken and Aki Omori.

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag, but that's what it is meant to be!!.......2006-07-18

Since this is a collection of previously unreleased material, by it's very nature it's going to be very hit and miss. There are a handful of amazing songs on here that I'm surprised were left off proper albums, and then some average material. But, for Orb fans, it's great to have all this stuff, so no complaints from me, and I hope they release more volumes! I agree with a previous reviewer that liner notes might have been helpful in order to identify where and when the material was composed and recorded, but as the other reviewer also said, you can sort of tell by listening what 'period' of Orb the track came from. Anyway, essential? No. But for an Orb fanatic or completist, definitely pick it up!!

1 out of 5 stars The Orb hits rock bottom.......2006-05-30

I have been an Orb fan since "Adventures...". The Orb (mostly Alex Patterson) hit a creative peak during Orbvs Terrarvm, and ever since it's been a long steady decline in quality. This collection of odds & ends really provides no liner notes or info, is packaged in a cardboard sleeve & has to the worst Orb cd to date. The songs are as monotonous & unimaginitive as ambient techno can get.

4 out of 5 stars Songs from here and there . . . .......2006-03-21

This album has some great music. Then again there are some other songs, well let's just mention that they were not released on domestic albums for a reason. Don't get me wrong, I like the Orb and they make some great music, but this disc doesn't have the flow as some of the previous discs. If you are a dedicated Orb fan, then you just might like this disc. If you are the casual listener then you might want to look for a different disc.

4 out of 5 stars Treats from The Orb's Archives.......2005-11-04

This album is the first in what will hopefully be a long series of releases of outtakes and unreleased material from the vaults of The Orb. Like all such anthologies, it's uneven and doesn't always hang together as a whole, but hey, it's unreleased Orb music! The highlight for me has to be the very early, Cauty-era "Mummie Don't"--a nice long brew from the same cauldron of samples that spawned the KLF's "3am Eternal" and The Orb's "Adventures...". "Yungle" is an outtake from "Cydonia" that has circulated widely on the internet already. "Sail" is probably the closest thing to a pop song that The Orb have ever done! The rest of the tracks are mostly lightweight, beaty, fun music. None of this is the best of The Orb, but then again that's what that "Best of" album was for: Orb Sessions v. 1 is just simple fun for Orb fans. I do wish there was a little more information about when each piece was done and for what; a diligent Orb scholar can kind of figure it out from the personnel involved, but a little more information would help. The foil-stamped folder package with the cards is a nice touch. Wishlist for "Orbsessions vol. 2": the 60-minute version of "A Huge Ever-Growing, Pulsating Brain...", more Thrash-era material, some of the more mutated live versions of "Plateau", an "official" release of some of those "Chill Out" mixes... there's plenty to hope for.

3 out of 5 stars for completeists only.......2005-09-30

Of the two (soon to be 3) LPs and 3 EPs BOC has released, this is probably the last album of theirs you'd want to pick up. Why? every song on it is also on Music has the Right to Children. That's not to say this EP doesn't have has merit; two of the three songs on here are different from their LP selves.

Aquarius [Version 3] is a suberb song, but it isn't much different from the original version on 'Music has the Right'. They've added and subtracted a few layers here and there and the result is a version I'd say slightly edges out the original. The differences are really quite minimal though. Happy Cycling isn't one of my favorite songs of theirs. It rambles on a bit too long before finally collecting itself at the end. In any case, this version is identical to the one on 'Music has the Right'. Olson [Version 3] is where this EP earns its salt. The original was a really pretty 1 1/2 minute lead-in, which had been streched out by a minute and fleshed out into an actual song. It's easily the best track of the three, since it's essentially been reworked into a whole new piece.

If you have 'Music the Right to Children' you're basically spending $12 for a Olson ver 3 and a slightly better version of Aquarius. If you don't have it, spending a couple more bucks on MHTRTC will net you a version of every song on this EP plus 15 more tracks.

      4 out of 5 stars Tricky........2005-08-31

Short, yes, but very, very re-listenable. BoC are very easy to experience again and again, and nothing's different about this disc.

Aquarius almost(almost!) disappointed me. It seems to be reoughly the same thing (though this is to be expected from a Peel Session) having taken a step backwards and a step forwards. The added drums remove much of the ambiance of the piece, although they add their own "crunchy" flavor. A subtle reinterpretation of a great song, made for a different mood.

Olson is, always has been, and always will be incredible. They took a simple piece and completely changed the feeling. More Geogaddi like, calming and yet unnerving at the same time. Perhaps the best "new" thing on the CD.

Happy Cycling is the reason Olson is only the best "new" thing on the CD. It's one of the best things BoC has ever made, but if you've listened to Music has the Right, which most who buy this album will have, it won't seem new. It's the same thing.

XYZ, not listed on the tracklisting on Amazon for whatever reason, doesn't sound like you'd expect BoC to sound like. Very progressive, very drummy. Quite good. Worth a listen.

If you like BoC at all you should grab it. It has a little bit of everything they do.

5 out of 5 stars A complete masterpiece. The greatest Peel session ever........2004-11-27

This is undisputably the best John Peel session ever recorded. Words cannot express the sheer beuty of 'Aqaurius'. A sound akin to a quireboy on MDMA. Breathtakingly awesome stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Worth more then you might think.......2003-08-28

I have everything B of C have done and this is one of the best. They are at their most happy-sounding, almost giddy, with the first two tracks and then a meloncholy, gorgeous third track. The tracks flow together perfectly and it's impossible to listen to this and not feel slightly happier and in a better mood. It's minimal - short and sweet, if they put any more on it would ruin the effect.

You may not think it's worth it, but this is a really special record.
ok, this is a single with 3 tracks:
-Aquarius - a different and MUCH better version then on 'Music has the Right...'

-Happy Cycling - already on the american release of 'Music has the Right...'

-Olsen - see Aquarius. Almost a completely different track. Extremely beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars The best thing they've yet done.......2002-05-28

I really love this release. Short, yes, but it is very VERY good, the one CD of theirs which I play the most.

      VERY recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply Chilling.......2003-05-11

After thoroughly loving The Chillout Sessions 2, I eagerly proceeded to buy this album, and I was not disappointed. From the funky beats of Groove Armada's "My Friend", to the earthy rhythm of Nitin Sawhney's "Sunset", this album was a mixture of blissful beats and chilled out house.

A personal (and perhaps obvious) favourite, was Zero 7's "Destiny". Nearly all the songs were excellent in their own right, with the only ones I didn't think belonged on the album were Basement Jaxx's "Romeo" and Lamb's "What Sound".

Following the same composure pattern as the previous chillout session, the first disc was filled with flowy, melodical beats, while the second disc was more dance-orientated.

I would definately recommend this to ambient and non-ambient music fans alike.

Once described as the gadfly of DJs, Morillo is a true clubworld chameleon, working under a slew of pseudonyms (Lil' Mo Ying Yang and RBM among them) while remixing everyone from Basement Jaxx to Enrique Iglesias(!). With all his personas in tow, as well as a reputation for sweating up dancefloors from Ibiza to Indiana, Morillo is just about worth this gargantuan three-disc house-trance marathon. Swift of hand and stuffed full of tricks, Morillo effortlessly provides a coat of funky warmth that lavishly covers the entire collection. But the secret ingredient, the one that lifts Subliminal Sessions Three above its immediate house-trance peers, is Morillo's indulgent, malevolent, leering hedonism. Indeed, when he drops Adam Beyer's sci-fi apocalypse "Remainings 3," then upshifts to the filthy, funk-laced "Glitterball" by FC Kahuna, it's obvious the man knows nasty fun. --Steffan Chirazi

      3 out of 5 stars too bad.......2003-04-05

this is a let down from erick -- too commercial!!! if you like an quivalent of "top 40" in house/club music, then this cd is for you! my favorite out of three cds is #3 which is vocal and diva house. it's the only one that sounded fresh (and i am not a fan of vocal or diva house at all).

      5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2002-08-17

I've been a fan of house music for a long time and I've purchased mix's that have some good tracks, but haven't had much direction or energy. I'm excited to say that this one is worth the purchase. THis has a nice combination of those tracks you've heard and those that you haven't, but are happy you know have. Anyone who has purchased headers such as MOS or Euphoria and have been let down at times, buy this one. Erick never lets you down.

5 out of 5 stars Subliminal Sessions Three.......2002-08-07

What can I say? Typical Morillo, not for the johnny come-lately club head. Lots wont get it, but as a club head from the 80s, oh yeah, this one is smoking. As always Morillio Brings it on this one!!

      5 out of 5 stars Stellar..........2006-01-08

I have never heard anything quite like this. Though I did the rave thing for a while and understand the downtime thing, I never got that vibe from this mix.

It's simply a mix that removes you from your surroundings for a while. With songs by such artists as Human League and Depeche Mode you'd think it would be pretty cheesy. However, these actually help to make the mix. Both discs start slowly and you suddenly realize what an amazing thing you are experiencing.

There's an overall moodiness and ominous feel to the mix with some hypnotic beats and samples the likes of DeNiro's ranting in "Taxi Driver" that are reworked to stunning effect. It's definitely downtempo but not in a narcotic way.

So it's truly an afterhours mix but it works anytime to really set the mood, especially if you are looking to chill. There is not a bad song in the mix.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Your Collection..........2005-05-13

Picture yourself at 10am, driving home from the club, most likely a high energy night. You want to keep the vibe going but you've had enough of the hard hitting trance and in-your-face breaks for one majestic night. What to do? The AfterHours series was created for this reason, and they did a damn good job. So, before ingesting yet another capsule make sure to pop in your AfterHours CD (no pun intendend). BTW: If you're sober now, this CD brings you back to those majestic nights.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of cd's bought and even fewer worth playing..........2003-11-21

...cd 1 ok. cd 2 awsome. I'll include cd 2 in my play list.

5 out of 5 stars This is the world where we live.......2003-11-20

Some where between too old to rave, and too young to buy a house in the burbs exists the world of Afterhours. Right after the club closes the real night begins. All the ametures go home and the proper party starts. This is the sound-track for that moment. This is not a comedown, chill out exercise. I thought it might be, so I stayed away for almost a year. Its a true mix for the middle of the night, maybe early morning. Sounds dark murky with this almost eery energy. One of GU's best efforts to date, overshadowing the 24:7, Taronto and lights out releases.

Ps. to an earlier reviewer, Some of GU's artist have mixed their own effort including Sander, James Leville and Sasha. However they are all "mastered" by cheeky paul whom I think mixed this one. Most all mixes have been "enhanched" using protools. I do remember reading how Danny Howells spent hours getting his nubreed mix right in the GU studio at the computer after he sent them the initial tapes. Altough I think this takes away a bit of the human componant, it makes for better listening at home and in the car. In the end though, if you want to praise an artits live mixing skills, go see them live. Mix CD's just show off programming skills, the far more difficult but less sexy side of DJ'ing.

4 out of 5 stars Setting the record straight.......2003-11-19

I sick of reading Global Underground reviews exclaiming how "flawless" the mixes are. Of course they are. I hate to burst your bubble, but all of the global underground CD's are mixed by the same guy, in a studio, on a computer. The artist picks the tracklisting, and is the face on the cover of the cd...Thats it. These albums are NOT mixed live, and G.U. has never claimed them to be. But, besides that fact, they are great albums.

American DJ Christopher Lawrence has had a productive partnership with Scotland's Hook Recordings since he started working with Hook label head Chris Cowie in 1998. Un-Hooked: The Hook Sessions concentrates on the self-produced material Lawrence created there, by and large a top-heavy collection of peak-hour anthems. "Navigator" and "Shredder" are prime examples, but then "Filmer" makes an appearance as well, a sparse, downbeat track that gives the listener a moment's rest before the thumps start raining down. Lawrence doesn't do much mixing here (though the tracks are blended), but his stamp as an "up vibe" DJ is just as prevalent as it was on his first artist record, 2004's All Or Nothing. It's enough to make you wish Lawrence would spend even more time in the studio; after all, the world's club DJs could certainly use more of that elusive wax known as quality trance. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars Chris Cowie, perhaps the best music producer ever. .......2006-04-03

Considering Chris Cowie (owner of the now defunct Hook Recordings) is the author who is at the heart and soul of these tracks I think his name should be equally mentioned. CL has come a long way indeed, but in the Hook days it was Cowie who was the real master-mind behind these tunes.

Nothing against CL. He is a great DJ and songwriter, but Cowie deserves equal credit. This is indeed a fantastic album. A+

      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-09-27

Way too chill for my tastes. Nothing very catchy about any of the tracks.

      5 out of 5 stars Chris Lawrence.......2005-09-09

Don't let the squaeky clean white image fool you- this DJ has got game, Home Boy, and lets the beats speak louder than the words.
I really couldn't agree more with the other two reviewers about the CD and music quality of this artist.
Only wish that other reviewers were as accurate in their summaries.

      5 out of 5 stars BENCHMARK.......2005-02-26

CL sets the standard for all trance Djs and producers. No cheese , EVER. Solid dark, heavy, sleek, and graceful tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Top notch boom-tiss.......2005-02-05

While the album starts off with the more downbeat 'Filmer', have no fear. Before long, an onslaught of some of the most straight-ahead boom-tiss gushes forth.

This is good, hard trance that simply...moves. If you've seen and heard Lawrence live, this is a good disc. This is a continuous mix of Lawrence's best tracks, though the mixing isn't the main focus. This thing pounds right out of the stereo, and is best listened to beginning-to-end, and then back to the beginning.

Easy to recommend, very dependable. Perfect driving music, which is why some of Lawrence's music pops up in video driving games (like 'Rush Hour' in Need for Speed 2). Also perfect for blowing up a mega-club.

5 out of 5 stars top drawer techno.......2006-03-05

I miss this CD desperately. I lent it to DJ Johannes and he won't give it back! Return it immediately and all is forgiven.

4 out of 5 stars progressive melodies and forward -thinking.......2002-12-05

A compilation of today's finest techno producers incorporated as an intelligent mix with just the right balance of melody and beat. Never switching into total overdrive, this mix from the brilliant Beyer is somewhat removed from his reputation for speed and power live. However, this is definitely no wimp-out and displays Beyer's ability to incorporate both power and melody into a very listenable and enjoyable set. Hopefully, in the not-too-distant-future, he can play San Francisco, a town with a good house-progressive scene, but sadly, starved of serious techno.

4 out of 5 stars A Mellow Side of AdaM BeYeR.......2002-06-20

My initial response when I first listened to this CD was... hmmmm. I have heard Adam Beyer before and I was expecting to hear some hard-hitting techno beats. This album seems to convey a mellower side of Adam Beyer, because his live sets are hard as hell. All in all though, this CD is good enough for a rating of four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Adam Beyer's- Stockholm Mix Session.......2002-05-11

This cd is point on!! Mixing is very smooth and the programing is perfect! If your into deep chuggin techno, this is the cd for you. This is how techno is meant to sound!
