It's hard to imagine that this album's bleak-spirited songs, grinding modern rock tack, and contemporary production aura are all the products of a musician who scored his first American chart hit in 1972, then was written off again a decade later after a string of MTV-fueled hits--including the classic "Jessie's Girl." But this is indeed the same Rick Springfield, his former bubblegum-rock incarnation belied by a tough musical stance that would be the envy of many a rocker half his age. But one doesn't have to dissect the slinky, eastern-inflected guitar hooks and fat, thumping bass of the wry "Jesus Saves" (chorus: "Jesus saves white trash, baby like you") very far to find that Springfield's songwriting instincts remain rock-solid. It's just as surprising to find that this self-produced album is the product of ears that have been anything but dormant in recent years, and savvy--or is it idealistic?--enough to turn a spunky, thrashed-up take of the Easybeats' 60's jewel "I'll Make You Happy" into a bridge across the generations. Cynical ears may mistake it all for a pose; if so it's an acting job the former soap opera star should be proud of. --Jerry McCulley

Different.......2007-05-16
This disc is quite different from the "Jessie's Girl" phase (if you will) that I grew up with. That being said, I still love this disc and singer/songwriter very much. I'm sure that I will buy anything that he puts out in the future.
Outstanding.......2007-05-16
Yep, its all true. This album is awesome. It kicks! ThX for the tunes R.S.
reality music.......2007-01-06
Just listen and it will make you think about your life.On top of that it is well written and sounds superb.
OH YEAH!.......2007-01-06
Coming from a fan of well forever-I'm as old as he is and have been to his concerts and have everything he's ever done. Not all have been great and he even lost me with a few-those of you not into the spiritual "out there" stuff he's done will know what I'm saying. but this, this is like going to rock heaven. I was allright!!! He's back. If you are only into his softer ballads don't bother. If you liked most of rock of life get ready to rock some more!
A Pleasant Surprise.......2006-11-05
I have been a fan of Rick Springfield's since 1972 when I first saw him on "American Bandstand" it might have been his first American TV appearance. I then got his second album, "Comic Book Heroes". I have followed, on and off, his music since then.
After having not listened to anything new of his for a long time I got back into the groove and bought SDAA. I was surprised, pleasantly surprised at how wonderful this album is start to finish.
Gone is the pop of "Jessie's Girl" this a rock and roll album. Hard driving guitars and fantastic drum lines each song is better than the next. Even my husband who is lover of Hard Rock likes this album.
I find it to be a mature album from an artist who wanted to, no needed to grow up even at this late age. I HIGHLY recommend this cd! Play it loud!

Customer Reviews:
What happened to the vocals?.......2005-11-23
Make no mistake, this is a fine slice of late 90's power pop. Featuring ex-Jellyfish leader Andy Sturmer on drums and some outstandingly melodic songs, it should have been perfect. I have heard the original Japanese issue of this CD, and this later edition is notably changed. Gone are some of the best harmony vocals, and it sounds as if a good portion of the lead vocals have been re-done, either with another singer or at least re-recorded. Frankly, it just isn't as good as the original version.
4.5 stars for this sugary pop album - this is the version to get.......2005-07-27
The Merrymakers are a Scandinavian power pop band that take obvious cues from genre touchstones such as the Beatles and Emitt Rhodes (covered here, with "Somebody Made For Me") as well as more modern influences like Jellyfish, their closest comparison. Though some tunes are almost overly saccharine and exuberant, their sheer joy and catchiness result in this being one of the finest albums of new-school power pop. Tracks are diverse enough to keep the listener's attention as well, ranging from the slightly Pink Floyd-ian ballad "Monkey In The Middle" to late-period Beatles romps like "April's Fool", complete with George-worthy slide guitar, to punky songs like "Superstar" that could go toe-to-toe with genre heavyweights like Fountains of Wayne. Overall, this is not to be missed by power pop fans, and some classic rock fans and alternative fans will be impressed as well. As for different versions of this album, this has the best price and the most tracks. You can't go wrong, even if you like the sequencing or artwork on the other versions. Enjoy!
Best Tracks:
"Saltwater Drinks" - Bounding out of the gates with this thrilling number, the Merrymakers quickly establish their position as the liveliest purveyors of power pop around.
"April's Fool" - Clever lyrics and great guitar work make this deceptively simple song a keeper.
"I'm In Love!" - Jangly, upbeat, innocent song that is reminiscent of the La's classic "There She Goes".
"Ms. Demeanor" - Amazing chorus, made all the more effective by being coupled with the restrained verses.
"Troubled Times" - Another song that is in constant rotation in power pop heaven. Nothing that reinvents the wheel but more than worthy of repeat plays.
