Multitalented, award-winning composer and musician Joanne Shenandoah gets better with every album. On Orenda, the singer and instrumentalist, herself of Iroquois descent, is joined by Mohawk Lawrence Laughing; and their duets, including "Deer Dance" and "Unity," are among the album's strongest tracks. Shenandoah's voice is a rare gift; on Orenda, it's rich and clear, and never falters. The mix of backing instruments works well, including several percussion and wind instruments as well as guitars, while the spare arrangements allow Shenandoah's and Laughing's voices to stand out. The blend of the traditional and the contemporary in her music works very well indeed, bringing out the best of both. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars If you want your spirit touched............2006-08-16

Joanne Shenandoah and Lawrence Laughing have been gifted with beautiful voices that come from the soul, from the heart, from the spirit. I have found the music calming, thought provoking, and most enjoyable. I have it on my computer at work. It reminds me of what is really important when the world around me is petty and small. This CD is worth every cent it costs.

5 out of 5 stars real and beautiful.......2005-09-12

I like this kind of music, it takes me to another world. Starting with the first song and the introduction spoken by Lawrence Laughing makes my flesh creep. Joanne has a beautiful voice and the duets together with Lawrence are a good combination!

5 out of 5 stars Stunning harmonies, haunting themes........2002-05-26

I picked this disc up by chance on a vacation to Yellowstone with my family. It quickly became the signature music for a magical journey.

Joanne Shenandoah is a quietly powerful advocate for her musical and cultural heritage, which she represents on this disc with deep compassion. The album title means the oneness of all things, and the songs explore that theme in a few of its many components.

The album begins with the speaking voice of Lawrence Laughing describing the meaning behind the disc. We are here not just to live physically, but to be present and available spiritually. The final track brings this home in a most compelling way with lyrics (spoken in English by Shenandoah before they are sung in the native language) that emphasize our responsibility to stand up and be counted "in the spirit world." Like most good albums of its kind, this one represents life as a journey: "And when you are ready, O maker of life, I'll come home to you."

The female harmonies are simply stunning. Whether singing of love or friendship or reverence for life, they speak quietly but unmistakably to the central theme of the album --- oneness in different voices. A simple courtship dance, thoroughly accessible to children no less than to adults, is poignant in its simplicity and harmony.

Much recent "Native American" music has tended toward the New Age, and like artists in any genre, many Native American artists have sacrificed authenticity to make a buck. Not Shenandoah, at least not on this disc. The musical techniques are modernized, but the performers avoid catering to "pop" tastes and excessive sentimentality. Each tune is fresh, unique and purposeful, and Shenandoah uses rhythm as a complement to the music, not a substitute for it.

I recommend this as a first disc for anyone looking to begin exploring Native American themes through modern artists.

5 out of 5 stars Speaks a Universal Language.......2002-01-09

Moo-zik = de uni-voice all lang which... Music IS the universal language!

And: Joanne Shenandoah speaks it fluently on this CD! - Kontemplatif +sympathetique y soothing. Let a healing sonic vibe wash over your being-ness. If you stop to listen - you'll hear a rare thing... a friendly message. - mrk (cornplanter -seneca)

5 out of 5 stars Orenda Had An Effect On My Spirit.......2001-06-13

I'm not one to do this sort of thing so here goes...

I happened to be sitting on the porch alone on a VERY dark night when the stars were out. I had my stereo beside me playing Orenda. The effect it had on my spirit was unreal. I don't know what it was, but I could feel SOMETHING... this is powerful music. Joanne, of Iroquois descent, is joined by Lawrence Laughing who is Mohawk; and their duets 'Passage' & 'Across The Sky' are the best Native songs I've ever heard. Shenandoah's voice is a rare gift - never faltering. This is quite simply the best Native album I've EVER heard, and I have over 200 albums.

ANYONE would be foolish not to get this album. You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss it!.......2004-04-25

I had never heard of Bill Miller until recently attending several of his performances at a local Indian Market. I kept going back to hear and absorb more, and afterwards, ordered several cd's, including this one. I wonder how and why I could have avoided hearing of him and missing out on his fantastic music for so long. Mr. Miller is a consummate musician and his lyrics and music evoke unimaginable heartfelt emotion and imagery. He is a master of a broad range of genres, keeping his style fresh and unique. His voice, guitar, and flute are instruments of great beauty and power. His music is a treasure. I found nothing long-winded about this cd, in fact, it left me wanting to hear more.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction........2004-04-07

Vanguard took up the difficult task of summarizing Bill Miller's amazing career in 16 songs and did it wonderfully. This is an excellent introduction to the career of this deeply spiritual folk-country-blues-rocking singer/songwriter/guitarist/flutist of Mohican heritage. While a long-winded description of the man and his music, it is very accurate. Whether you're looking for some sort of spiritual enlightenment or just good music, "Spirit Songs" is a must-own.

2 out of 5 stars Cedar Dream Songs.......2006-10-09

I fell in love with Bill Miller with such albums as The Art of Survival and Reservation Road. The songs in these albums were unique and were colored with Bill Miller's Indian heritage. One of them has a really wonderful Indian flute instrumental, Wind Spirit. Each time, I looked forwarded to new releases from Bill. Then, one day it seemed that he felt guilty that he was denying his 'traditional' Indian heritage. From then on his albums, like this one, sounded like every other Native Indian recording. Sigh!!! The later albums are so ho hum. Bill, please go back to songs like Reservation Road, Ordinary Man and Tumbleweed. These songs and others on the other two albums I mentioned above, were drawn from your Native Indian heritage and are so far above anything you are producing these days.

5 out of 5 stars Cedar Dreams.......2005-11-18

My favorite Native American flutes are cedar- especially Spanish Cedar. Pick up a cedar flute and feel how the wood feels in your hands. Blow on it and feel the cedar enter your nose, your lungs. Look at the flute and realize what Bill does with the pentatonic scale. Such simplicity, such eloquence, such genius.

I used to play a lot of his songs when I volunteered as a DJ at a tribal radio station. I liked to be in the studio singing with him, thinking of his words, his music, going out over the airwaves.

Bill distills experience and songs to their essence and shares his gift with us in the form of incredibly beautiful and soulful music. I am very grateful for that.

And really, pick up a flute and play it. There is no wrong note. There is playfulness and opening up to the music you have within you. Listening to this album is an excellent guide to what open heartedness and mastery sound like.

5 out of 5 stars This CD deserved the Grammy it won!.......2005-09-02

This CD is yet another side of an extremely talented musician, artist, poet. His ability to touch your soul with his music is second to none. I have had the pleasure of listening to his music since the 1970's, he is always improving and his music is never predictable. The sound quality of this CD is exceptional. Buying any of Bill's CD's will be a worthwhile investment for your music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Gets into your Spirit!.......2004-11-19

This album is full of music that gets inside you. In my opinion, this is Bill Millers best CD. This is not just flute music. The mix on this CD just works, almost putting you in a trance. I do not suggest you listen to this while driving!

There was nothing like the Robeson sound, ever. To describe his deep, rich, perfectly equalized instrument is futile. Go instead to "Balm in Gilead," the opening track, and see if you can listen to the last pianissimo phrase without falling to pieces. Robeson was at his best when the music was slow and the words contained spiritual or social messages. Faster, lighter fare like Kern's "I Still Suits Me" or Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So" find the serious-minded singer out of his element, lacking irony and swing. "Old Man River," though, gets a simple, dignified treatment. It's Songs of Free Men, though, that will just keep Robeson's artistry rolling along, especially in Sony's astonishing transfers. --Jed Distler

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Robeson on wax.......2007-06-19

I found this album in a thrift store last week, for a couple of dollars. It's the original pressing on four 78 RPM records, in a gatefold format. It's in pristine condition. I really bought it for the incredible cover art, although I hope to be able to listen to it in this format at some point.

5 out of 5 stars The voice, the sound quality and the interpretation.......2004-09-24

Put this on your stereo and if it is good enough the depth and richness of Robeson's voice will make your fillings rattle and your chest rumble. The power of his voice is awesome. This CD is superbly recorded with no audible noise at normal listening levels.

4 out of 5 stars A Voice from the 40s, often dated, often moving.......2002-09-01

"Red diaper babies" have greeted this disc with nostalgic joy, and it captures a time and an aesthetic and a political belief with precision. Anyone interested in the emotional life of the pro-Soviet left of the 1940s should buy this disc. It's something like Henry Wallace set to music. There is much more to Robeson than that, however, and Sony has given us Robeson whole: there are songs by American masters of the musical, there are labor songs, religious songs, as well as the kind of faux-folk songs which the butcher supreme Josef Stalin encouraged and which were not taken seriously inside the USSR (except at gunpoint!!) but which were taken up by dupes around the world. This is Robeson at his least savory - willing propagandist for a vile mass murderer. Songs such as "Native Land" (fittingly, Robeson is referring to the Soviet Union) and the Red Army song are the equivalent of the "Horst Wessel Song", anthems of murder, and it is difficult to listen to the worst of them without retching. On the other hand, Robeson's commitment to American folk culture was real. "Balm in Gilead" is deeply beautiful; "John Henry" is heroic; "By an' By" is both resigned yet hopeful. "Joe Hill" captures an era in labor history. Anyone interested in American popular song should hear these. Turning to Broadway, his "Old Man River" is very fine, though Robeson changed the lyrics for political reasons and Leonard Warren has done the song better. I disagree with the editorial reviewer: "I Still Suits Me" is wonderfully playful and shows Robeson using his gorgeously rich voice to tease and poke fun. However, Marc Blitzstein's "Purest Kind of a Guy" is beyond saving - another example of Robeson recording an unworthy song by a political fellow-traveller. Ugh. But for every miss there are two hits. Robeson performs Mendelssohn's Elijah with nobility, and sings his favorite song, "Water Boy", with joyous pride: "There ain't no hammer that's on these mountains that rings like mine, boys, that rings like mine."
No one need have any fears about the mono sound quality. The orchestra in the second half of the program is at times a little dwarfed by Robeson's voice, but it generally sounds clean and colorful, and the great artist's voice rings like no other.

5 out of 5 stars Robeson at his best.......2000-05-12

It's hard to believe that most of these recordings pre-date the advent of magnetic tape: the CD transfer is superlative. The songs and performance are beyond reproach. Notable is the imaginative packaging in miniature 'record album' format, complete with the original cover art, and a replica of the original Columbia record label applied to the CD.

In response to a previous question: Robeson's performance of Danny Boy (Londonderry Air) can be found on the Vanguard LP entitled "Robeson" (VRS-9037).

5 out of 5 stars some of the greatest songs of the last century.......2000-05-05

In the 1940s, before rabid McCarthyism and racism had taken its toll on him, Robeson made these wonderful recordings of spirituals, classics and pop tunes. Accompanied by the solo piano of the incomparable Lawrence Brown, or by an orchestra, the songs ring out with pride, dignity, skill and unmatched integrity. The shameful treatment that Robeson was subject to from American authorities certainly seem grotesquely absurd to a modern listener. The wonderful version of "The House I Live In" included on this cd should forever kill off any suspicion that Robeson did not love his country deeply. This album ought to be heard by millions of people, world wide. Robeson's voice is nothing less than a glorious high point in 20th century music, and it's hard to think of any recording capturing it to greater advantage.

At long last a cd of Lakota Canunpa songs, one we can understand and learn from. Of course like most recordings of this type, it's not quite melodious, but it serves the purpose. It would have been better had the words been included in both Lakota & English....for those who don't know what they are singing about, but for some reason it seems as though the words are not provided as some sort of deterrent to those people who would just go along and sing these Sacred songs just for the hell of it. As if! Most common people would even bother..... But it has helped me....

Joseph Shields, Jr. has given a gift of spirit. This compilation of Lakota pipe songs is very sacred, honest, and pure.

The editors at the Madacy label did a nice job with this collection in choosing stirring, beautiful traditional music from various Native American cultures. Liner notes would have helped explain the significance and context of the different songs, but even without them the performances are highly enjoyable. Included are chants and dances from the Cherokee, Navaho, Sioux, and Comanche nations as well as a "Rain Chant," "Burial Chant," "Hunter's Chant," and other songs whose origins are not identified. Most of the songs present strong unison male voices backed by a large ceremonial drum. However, the whistles far in the background of "Dance of the Sun God" and "Chieftain Dance" add a delicate counterpoint, effectively evoking the mysteries of the natural world, the next world, and the meeting of the two. --Bob Tarte

5 out of 5 stars great for homeschooling!.......2007-01-19

we listened to this CD while learning about Native Americans. it is great because each song has a purpose.
plus the song list describes what song was sung for each festival.

1 out of 5 stars Not excited.......2006-01-16

In search of a better understanding of the essence of Native American cremonial music, I found myself quite dissapointed on hearing this CD. Reading each song title as I went. I discovered the same two songs repeating over and over, as the titles changed. This CD does a disservice to Native American culture by not properly crediting the tribal origin of each song.

1 out of 5 stars Many repeat songs.......2005-07-28

This CD does have authentic Native American Indian Music but many of the songs just repeat with different titles. There are 2 songs that are copied 4 times each # 2,4,6,8 and 3,5,7,13 and 2 songs which are copied twice #15,17 and 9,12. Better bet for your money is Authentic Native American Music.

1 out of 5 stars The "S" word..........2004-08-02

Not only this includes public SI releases for Native American social and ceremonial dances as any other recording (in the EXACT order), but it renames them in a wicked fashion!!!!!

Other than that, few track simply repeat!

Definitely worth sparing your money for something different!

PS.: I would rate 0 stars, but this thing won't let me

4 out of 5 stars authentic music.......2001-07-10

I ordered this for a class of young students. I needed an authentic example of native american music and found it in this cd. The best aspect of the cd were the various selections from many different tribes. The kids enjoyed it, and I was pleased to find that it was not a bastardization of native american music as so many others have been in the past.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Native American Music.......2006-03-01

This is the most centering/grounding of all the Indian drumming, chanting, and instrumental music I've listened to. It's relaxing and sometimes even somewhat haunting. But the spiritual tone will resonate through your soul and revive and strengthen your spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully soothing music!.......2001-07-27

This is a very calming and centering cd. The chants have a soothing and calming quality, and the background ambient music fits perfectly with the chants. I often hear for several hours in a row, and I feel more at peace, more centered. What better recommendation can one give?

3 out of 5 stars I like the ambient background music, but not the chanting.......2001-06-16

This CD was disappointing to me. I bought it after hearing one song from these guys on a "Planet Chant" compilation CD. On the piece chosen for Plant Chant, Primeaux and Mike's chanting has a trance-provoking, ethereal quality to it. However, on Sacred Path, I did not find most of the chants to have this quality. Many of the chants on Sacred Path have a repetitiveness that becomes quite annoying after a bit. I realize that repetition is the hallmark of chanting, but I did not find the repetition of these chants to have a healing affect on me. In fact, I found some of them to be downright unpleasant. On the other hand, I did like the ambient music played behind each piece. It had a gentle and more relaxing quality than the chanting on me. Botton line on this CD: Upon repeated listenings, I find the chanting just does not work to provide me with relaxation, but the ambient background music does. Unfortunately, the chanting negates any effect the ambient background music has on me. I would not recommend this CD for relaxation purposes.

5 out of 5 stars mysteriously peaceful music.......2001-02-13

This is the only CD that I own at present by these singers. There is something almost mysterious about it. When I play it last thing at night I have the best sleep of all & feel very rested the next day. Each track blends together to make a lovely sound. I really would recommend it to anyone who finds it hard to relax. Any suggestions for my next CD by Primeaux & Mike?

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Healing.......2001-02-10

In listening to this music, you feel touched by the Creator. Although good to hear anytime, these sacred chants are especially a gift when you feel alone, in a hurting space or in a "dark" time. The voices are soothing, comforting, and nurturing, bringing the "Presence" to touch your heart. Reverence, humility and healing will embrace you as you hear it. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Pluto too!.......2004-01-27

Although my daughter is only a year old, she loves bouncing to this music and if she's crying in the car, she calms down immediately. I enjoy the funny lyrics to these songs and am thankful that this isn't the average New Agey, saccharine children't music that fills the shelves. We've purchased this CD for my daughter's non-Indian friends and they love it too.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2003-07-05

I am native american and listening to these songs makes me think of the pow-wows my family and I go to, my niece and little cousins enjoy this cd so much. Thanks black lodge for making something for the whole family.

5 out of 5 stars Your child deserves this CD!.......2002-12-01

I am not a tribal member, but I love this CD. The members of Black Lodge really understand that play is a child's work. By letting them "practice" being adults with fun lyrics, they are developing an interest that may change a child's and a community's future. My first experience with the CD was in a tribal school, but now I'm buying it for my nieces and nephews. I want them to see how culture is just a different way to express lots of things that we all feel and enjoy. And I want them to remember the friends they met while I worked there. Thank you, Black Lodge! And thank you, Amazon, for making it so easy to find.

5 out of 5 stars Pow wow music breaks the stereo-types.......2002-10-28

This is such a wonderful CD! For kids who are native and think pow wow music is for the old folks, think again. For old folks who think pow wow music has to be somber and serious, think again! We love this at our house, and sing the songs often. Anytime someone mentions 'fifty-cents' we can't help breaking into song. Thank goodness for a native CD that's FUN! My favorite is when they sing, "Oh my gosh, it's Mighty Mouse!"
