Album Description

As they celebrate a thirty-year career of filling arenas, selling tens of millions of albums and playing songs with which a generation of rock fans came of age, visionary rock legends Rush decided to have a little fun with the music they grew up with. Featuring covers of songs by The Who, The Yardbirds, Love, Cream, Buffalo Springfield and more, the trio's new EP Feedback is a rocking good time for anyone who loves Rush or just classic rock & roll. Drummer Neil Peart, in the album's liner notes, explains, "It was April of 2004, but Geddy, Alex, and I were channeling back to 1966 and 1967, when we were thirteen- and fourteen-year-old beginners. We thought it would be a fitting symbol to commemorate our thirty years together if we returned to our roots and paid tribute to those we had learned from and were inspired by. We thought we might record some of the songs we used to listen to, the ones we painstakingly learned the chords, notes, and drum parts for, and even played in our earliest bands. The tracks on this collection are songs we liked from the era that we thought we could `cover' effectively (meaning not too many backing vocals), and have some fun with. The music celebrates a good time in our lives, and we had a good time celebrating it."

5 out of 5 stars 30th Anniversary Rush EP Chockful Of Classic Covers!!!!.......2007-07-17

In April of 2004, Geddy, Alex & Neil got together and recorded a few songs that inspired them in their youth. These are the songs that they worked so hard when they were younger to learn so that they could jam them in their early bands. Here we have The Yardbirds, Buffalo Springfield, The Who and others in a free-for-all Rock Fest. Straight ahead flashback of classic rock to a time when the music was wailing and the songs were tight. Let's look at the songs:

Summertime Blues - Excellent rendention of the classic Blue Cheer (right?)tune. The vocals are a little rough and the song sounds like a recorded jam done live. Perfect.

Heart Full Of Soul - Killer Yardbirds tune. If I hadn't been nudged by Rush to seek out the original, I never would have done so. A great song.

For What It's Worth - I always liked this haunting Buffalo Springfield song. The boys from Toronto make quick work of it and it works out quite well. One of my personal favorites here.

The Seeker - The fact that these particular songs were chosen is awesome. Each one rocks out loud. This was always one of my favorite songs by The Who, now i get to hear one of my all time favorite bands doing it! Excellent!

Mr. Soul - Another nod to Buffalo Springfield. Lesser known song. It's obscure, but intense.

Seven And Seven Is - This is another great song. Driven. Grooving. Great.

Shapes Of Things - This Yardbirds song has been covered by so many people and yet it still rocks hard. Gary Moore, David Bowie, etc.... Now Rush. AWESOME!

Crossroads - A great Cream song. Alex shreds here. Very f*cking cool!

Overall, this is a great little EP to tide over the Rush fans and give a little tribute to the bands they admired when they were young. The 30th Anniversary tour was awesome! They played like 40-something songs. I love Rush and have since I was like 13 years old. That was a long time ago and I still can't think of anything I'd rather do than jam out to one of their album. It's been a great, glorious, ilustrious 30 years, and I hope they continue for another 30.

Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars Back to their roots..........2007-05-22

As a RUSH aficionado, I can appreciate this tribute by RUSH to their beginnings. Before they completely cut away from "covering", you could have caught them in Ontario rocking to these songs. I think they have done a great job mixing their inimitable qualities with these classics.

4 out of 5 stars Cover Songs .......performed by Rush.......2007-05-09

Perhaps not the best selection of cover songs, but not bad either especially how they punch the magnatude of sound. And yes perhaps we have heard these songs over and over again, but hey it's Rush, and they kick. I have been a casual fan of Rush for almost 20 years now and always they are a impressive band that re-invents themselves over again.

1 Summertime Blues 4/5 sounds like The Who version....nice try
2 Heart Full of Soul 4/5 good
3 For What It's Worth 5/5 sounds better than the original that's abused
4 The Seeker 5/5 better than Townshend...Alex
5 Mr. Soul 5/5 love how they start this song...awesome...one up on Young
6 Seven and Seven Is 4/5 least favorite, I like the original...missing last part of this song..I gave it a 4 though, my wife likes it
7 Shape of Things 4/5 not bad...better than The Jeff Beck Group version
8 Crossroads 5/5 Pretty good here...one on Clapton here..or Robert Johnson
This album goes good in the continuous play of any other Rush album, especially Snakes and Arrows, or even Vapor Trails.

1 out of 5 stars Another lame album of covers - well played though.......2007-05-01

Another band releasing an album of covers... yay. Great. Instead of wasting our time with original music, we get to listen to rehashed songs from childhood.

At least with Rush you know the playing will be phenomenal (which it is) and the arrangements will be precise (which they are). If you don't already have these songs by their original artists, go ahead and get this album. Otherwise, skip it.

And actually, they ARE covering the Who's version of "Summertime Blues", but with a little Blue Cheer thrown in. The *ORIGINAL* version of the song was done in the key of E by Eddie Cochran in the late 1950s. The Who transposed it to the key of A, and Rush does it in the key of A as well, and they're doing the faster, harder version popularized by the Who. The intro sounds more like what Blue Cheer did, but BC did the song in the key of C.

4 out of 5 stars This is a fun album.......2007-04-05

This album was definitely unexpected from Rush, but it was also a clever and fun way to celebrate their 30th anniversary. I think this is further proof that the members of Rush DON'T take themselves as seriously as a lot of their critics over the years have charged.

I am a huge fan of the original versions of "Heart Full of Soul" and "Crossroads", and I think these two songs are the highlight of this album (also "The Seeker" and "For What it's Worth" are very good), particularly the great guitar work of Alex Lifeson on "Crossroads".

If you're a Rush fan, or a fan of any of the originals (or covers of the originals) on this album, then you should buy this, as you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.

It's understandable when artists want to grow their fan base in order to more easily make a living and also reach a larger group of listeners. The trick, of course, is how to do this without releasing artistically compromised records that, well, suck. L.A. underground vets J5 were almost a supergroup from the start, combining the formidable talents of the Unity and Rebels of Rhythm crews. If anyone deserves to move beyond the backpack clique, it's them (well, and Aceyalone). And while no one's going to condemn the band for pulling a Black Eyed Peas here, it's hard to imagine really listening to this album as much as its two predecessors, either. Take the lead single, "Work It Out": the jam has a smoove, down-tempo vibe that's nice enough, and the Dave Matthews vocal on the chorus is pretty excellent. But the lyrics--which deal with not only let's-get-back-together-baby material, but also vaguely PC hip-hop--never gel. It makes one yearn for the actual Daisy Age. There are a few outstanding tracks, but overall this is a hip-hop album that sounds as if it were written by a corporate committee--each song directed at a particular demographic--rather than a mini-manifesto crafted to get your fists pumping and/or your feet moving. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Decent, but disappointing.......2007-01-03

I have always thought that Jurassic 5 was one of the smartest, most innovative hip-hop groups around, but I fear they may be losing ground. Feedback, their latest, lacks the creative spark and revolutionary attitude that made Quality Control such an original masterpiece. It comes off more as a typical commercial rap album.

It's not just that they are missing Cut Chemist, although that sure hurts. It's also that DJ Nu-Mark's beats are quite a bit cheesier than usual, veering away from his usual jazzy complexity, and running dangerously close to the dance club pulse of MTV-land. The album does feature the inexplicably catchy DMB collaboration Work It Out, which I have been singing under my breath for days, but let us remember that catchy is not the same as lyrically great.

So if you're a J5 fan, instead of Feedback, I suggest you pick up Nu Mark's solo album Hands On, which serves both as a showcase of his spinning talent and a rich museum of jazz, funk and world music. In fact, with support from Chali 2na, J Live and a few other hip-hop artists, that release comes a lot closer to the original spirit of J5 than this stuff.

3 out of 5 stars These ARE the same guys, right?.......2006-12-01

I'm sorry; are these the same group of intelligent hip-hoppers that had us listening while everyone else had their Nelly and Bow Wow? Well, yes and no: DJ Cut Chemist left the fold, so the rest of Jurassic 5 had to soldier on. But they could have done a lot better that Feedback.

There are a few live performances that impress though, like "Turn It Out" and especially the album's opener, "Back 4 U". The latter gives you the idea that this will be another stellar J5 journey, but immediately following that song is the blatant "Radio". And the problem isn't that J5 is trying to become mainstream because as reviewer DJ Benny pointed out, they've always been on Interscope (kinda like people calling Dilated Peoples underground yet they're on Capitol Records); it's the fact that a lot of the songs are so different from their usual style that it's a little hard to stomach.

I don't think the lead single "Work It Out" (with Dave Matthews Band) is all that bad; the only problem I really have with it is that even though Dave is only singing the chorus, the music makes it feel more like Dave Matthews Band featuring Jurassic 5 instead of the other way around. But as other reviewers have mentioned, female-oriented songs like "Brown Girl" and especially "Baby Please" fall flat. The latter also isn't helped by the speed-rapping, OR the sample of Al Green's "Love & Happiness" for the umpteenth time. And there's absolutely no excuse for "In the House"; well, unless this was 1983.

One song that everyone seems to like is "Red Hot", but the chorus to that song ruined it for me. Songs that DO impress include tracks 8 and 9: "Where We At" and "Get It Together". Another highlight is "End Up Like This". The song has the chorus: "How did we end up like this?" which is exactly what I'D like to know. Maybe the guys in J5 don't realize that it's best for the MTV generation to jump onto their bandwagon because they realize the music is good, not because the artist pathetically changes their style to fit the mold. Hopefully they'll realize that the next time around because right now if most people were to download a lot of these songs, they'd probably want to send the feed back.

3 out of 5 stars Don't mess with a good formula.......2006-11-11

The latest Jurassic 5 album is a departure from their previous works of pure hip-hop, and moving towards a fusion of pop and hip-hop. With collaborations with Dave Mathews Band, you can definitely tell that they're moving in a different direction. I think it will garner more commercial success, but what's made J5 great in the past was it's honesty towards the craft.

2 out of 5 stars No New Tricks.......2006-11-09

I am a huge a Jurassic 5 fan, in fact they are probably the single biggest influence of why I started to like hip hop. On this album nothing catches your attention. The use the same formula that they have used in the past, but the execution of the songs sometimes seems forced. A lot of that has to do with Cut Chemist not being there. Nu-Mark is a good producer, but when he steps aside to let others produce the music you can tell the difference. "Back 4 you" and "Red Hot" are really the only two good songs on the album. There are a couple of other decent tracks but nothing that is going to get stuck in your head. Also the song with Dave Matthews Band is AWFUL, but J5 wanted to try something new, and I think that is an interesting artistic decision, it just does not work very well between these two styles. This is by far the worst J5 album, if you want classic J5 pick up Quality Control, or their EP, each of these are defining hip hop.

3 out of 5 stars It's okay..........2006-11-06

...but only because it's Jurassic 5. As others have mentioned, Cut Chemist's presence is sorely missed. It's an okay album, but J5's worst by far. If you're new to J5 pick up the EP, Quality Control, and Power in Numbers before you even think about getting this album.

5 out of 5 stars DIRTY still sounds FRESH .......2007-04-03

DIRTY was released by Sonic Youth in 1992 during the grunge years. This album, their 8th release was produced and directed by Butch Vig the same producer for Nirvana's Nevermind and the Smashing Pumpkins debut: Gish.
Always changing their sound, this is their grunge effort. Very upbeat with a natural rock coolness that includes propulsive layers of sound and fury. DIRTY is the second shot of shorter pop songs in the same way "Goo" was produced. Both Goo and DIRTY sound more accessible w/o the long instrumental guitar noise passages that graced earlier albums My favorite songs on DIRTY are: "100%" - "Swimsuit Issue" - "Drunken Butterfly" - "Shoot" - "Sugar Cane" - "Orange Rolls,Angel's Spit" - "Chapel Hill" - "JC" - & "Purr"
ESSENTIAL SONIC YOUTH along with Daydream Nation(which sounds completely different) and EVOL- I also LOVE Murray Street, Sister, Thousand Leaves + 2006s Rather Ripped. I am also a REALLY BIG fan, I had to buy all of their albums.
DIRTY shows a wonderful transition for Sonic Youth still sounds fresh and clean - 15 years after it's release.

4 out of 5 stars another very solid SY release.......2007-03-14

Each Sonic Youth album has a very unique flavor, and each Sonic Youth album stands out in their extremely lengthy catalouge... yet it is hard to find a Sonic Youth album that is virtually flawless. Obviously, Sonic Youth are not at all interested with perfection, rather atmosphere... but isn't that what makes this band so great?

There seems to be two basic problems with Sonic Youth releases. On some, the production is way too obscure and lacking to let the beauty of the album be heard, and on others, the soaring sections of feedback and reverb can sometimes wander off into obscure directions with seemingly no purpose. Both are aspects that I do not criticize too harshly, because I think of Sonic Youth as artists rather than musicians, throwing the ugly in with the beautiful to create a very realistic picture. Reguardless, these flaws do bring down the overall release somewhat.

In 'Dirty', there are no throw out tracks, great (but not too great wich is a good thing) production, and the feedback sessions are shortened and too the point. This is a very straightforward release by Sonic Youth standards, but also a very dark and atmospheric work at the same time. Everything seems in place here, a classic SY release. The only complaint I have is that in some places, 'Dirty' may be a little too straightforward. Not quite a masterpiece such as 'Daydream Nation' or 'A Thousand Leaves', but a very solid, and entertaining album as a whole.

1 out of 5 stars I Don't Get It.......2006-04-14

Clearly I'm far too closed minded for this album. If I wanted to listen to people screaming and crashing and banging completely out of sync I'd open my window at 5am while the neighbors are screaming at each other again and the early-bird construction crew is cutting concrete outside my apartment while the garbage truck is slamming the dumpster onto the pavement repeatedly. Absolutely no musicality, no message, NO TALENT.

If I wanted to hear this I could go down to the local foundary yard and listen to them cutting steel.. FOR FREE.

I could go into a blow-by-blow for each track on why it's musical murder but that would be a grand waste of my time. Horrible.

This is one band that the indie snobs made it "uncool" to dislike, so everyone looks around like "wow this is flippin genious" while in their heads they can't believe that everyone else likes them and they don't. GET OVER IT. You want arty music, go listen to Sigur Ros or Godspeed you Black Emperor.

5 out of 5 stars Dirty sounds, but dirty is nice isn't it..........2006-03-05

"Dirty" was Sonic Youth's most commercial album. I am not sure if this was done on purpose, but it makes 'Dirty' SY's most open album. Open for the lovers of alternative/progressive rock with an almost jazzlike way of listening to music.

Musically it may not be as interesting as their 'Daydream Nation' or masterpiece 'Sister' but there are great songs on here. Without a doubt this is their best collection of songs.

'100%' was an MTV hit and could rival with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', the track following that 'Swimsuit Issue' (Gordon) with strained and coarse vocals has a great break and suddenly slows down.

A dreamer side of SY can mostly be found in the songs sung by Kim Gordon like 'PR' or the thumping, metallike 'Drunken Butterfly'. 'Shoot' is carried by Kim's voice and a rolling bassline.

Best song on the album is the brilliant 'Sugar Kane' with some great moments of pure musical genious, clarity, chord changes. I could go and on. Similar songs like 'Chapel Hill' and 'Purr' come close too.

Even know almost 15 years later there is so much you can still discover in the album, it surely shows that Sonic Youth are the godfathers of all the indie/underground bands that followed. Husker Du and Dinosaur came close, but in importance to alternative music only the Beatles, Neil Young and the Velvet Underground are above Sonic Youth.

Their approach to music is almost jazzlike, and like many jazzartists, after a while they started making fully rounded songs but of a scary quality.

If you are interested in buying a Sonic Youth album but never heard anything before get this one.

5 out of 5 stars Not as Dirty as it sounds.......2006-01-27

A very good sonic youth effort, I must say. Admittedly, there are a lot of songs on here I actually just don't listen to for one reason or another. But the songs I do listen to make up for it.
100% - GREAT. rocks. 'nuff said.
SWIMSUIT ISSUE - really like the lyrics of this kim number. "don't touch my breast / i'm just working at the desk"
THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD - good vocal by thurston here, but the title really does it justice. it's a sound-world of waxing guitars.
DRUNKEN BUTTERFLY - this song even sounds like its title, and is one of my favorites on the album. kim sings ' i love you i love you i love you whats your name?' quite appropriately. grating riff.
SHOOT - another good Kim song, about domestic violence in some way, it seems. but maybe that's my over-literal interpretation. "you only hit me when you wanna be pleased".. kind of a sad, but in the end, vengeful song. i like it a lot.
WISH FULFILLMENT - another favorite on here. like the lyrics a lot, and good vocals by lee. check out the rehearsal recording from the remasters as well, for an interesting take.
SUGAR KANE - really great song, rocks hard. brings back a lot of good memories of someone i used to have feelings for, probably because they liked this song so much.
ORANGE ROLLS, ANGEL'S SPIT - don't listen to this one. just too obnoxious for me.
YOUTH AGAINST FASCISM - i really want to like this song, but..
NIC FIT - no. this reminds me of being a 16-year-old at a TRUCK GRIND YOUR FACE show, not wanting to have people spill beer on me anymore.
ON THE STRIP - another great kim song. dark feeling, reminds me of SHOOT.
CHAPEL HILL - one of the songs i liked a lot when i first got this album because it was immediately accessible, and it still is pretty rocking.
JC - a high point of this album, definitely. something about this song is hypnotic and captivating, like you don't want to leave its presence. great lyrical work here and sonically it's just so fresh.
PURR - good song, but not -that- good.
CREME BRULEE - eh. like i said.

The ageless Sonic Youth return with a new, yet familiar, excursion into their own particular brand of ultra-amplified, dissonant rock. The quartet's CD A Thousand Leaves evokes fond memories of yesteryear's noisy, now-classic, avant-garde approach, while retaining snippets of traditional pop elements heard on several of their previous major-label releases. As Sonic Youth's music has gained a larger audience, they've preserved doses of the crunched melody and meandering structure that has always been their trademark. The new release sounds relatively unabashed, with wandering songs like "Female Mechanic Now on Duty" spewing extended barrages of feedback and Kim Gordon's dry, unsettling scowls at the listener. Look deeper, however, and there's a quiet resonance among the racket, with tracks like "Sunday" and "Snare, Girl" making use of Thurston Moore's cooler vocal tone and jagged, cascading guitar passages. --Matthew Cooke

5 out of 5 stars He's just a kitten..........2006-08-05

Another masterpiece in the Sonic Youth catalouge. Here the band keeps their avant style leaving behind the pop stylings of Dirty and Goo, and continue with 'Washing Machine' songs. As an SY fan knows though every album is much different than any other, so this of course has it's own unique.

The standout track is definatley "Sunday" with perfect Thurston vocals. Lee keeps up his spoken word masterpieces that always ring true. And the sometimes hit or miss Kim Gordon is in top riot grrl form blasting away on "Female Mechanic".

2 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth loses their way.......2006-07-02

I remember when this album came out. I had been a huge Sonic Youth fan for years and I ran to Mod Lang in Berkeley to buy it the day it was released. I brought it home, put it on, and desperately tried to like it. But I just couldn't. SY had always had a penchant for strectching out their feedback experiments into sprawling, fasinating compositions, but here it all just seemed to melt down into a pointless noise crusade. There are a few high points, but mostly I just find myself thinking, "there is no way this song deserves to be nine minutes long." The slide continued on the next record, but fortunately they got it together again on "Murry Street" and have been putting out great stuff ever since.

5 out of 5 stars The music sounds just like the color of the album cover........2006-07-02

It took me a little while to really get into this, but once I did I just couldnt take this masterpiece out of my cd player. All the songs have like a little weird twist to them, like dejavu notes or melodies you swear you have heard before in your mind. Kim Gordon's singing is pretty good too, at first it might seem like she's just screaming whatever she thinks of but keep listening and it will be very rewarding.

4 out of 5 stars Continuous vitality.......2006-03-22

Quite superb, if only for songwriting/production triumphs like "Wildflower Soul" and "Hits of Sunshine." Outside of several gorgeously encapsulated songs, the album's entire structure practically shakes with creative energy.

Part of an essential trilogy with "Washing Machine" and "NYC Ghosts & Flowers."

5 out of 5 stars Not even a thousand words could describe the beauty of this recording.......2005-11-02

This record kinda has the same crisp sound one could find on Washing Machine which is as great as this one. There are several reasons why this album is so impressive.First of all, lyricswise it's so inspired and coming from me it really means sthg as i'm not who usually pays attention to what the singer has to say. And this really blends in so well with the guitar and bass playing.I would also like to say that they do have a great sense of climax just listen to wild flower soul, at the end of the song the guitar burst into a wild symphonic coda before suddenly coming back to the initial theme. You also have a great variety of song structure not just the verse chorus verse you're used to and pleasz don't listen to those who say their songs are to long, their judgement is merely based on a stupid assumption that a song must last no more than 5 minutes(if you think about it that's because a radio has to bring ya commercials evry 4 or 5 minutes...) and I absolutely do not agree that Kim Gordon is a poor singer .Of course occasionaly she rants like on French Tickler but it adds a contrast to the song if you want the perfect exemple of her musical talents listen to little trouble on washing machine or kissability on DN or I love you Golden blue on the latest release Sonic Nurse.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Shine.......2007-02-27

Sonic Youth is not a Robot. They are here to make you react to the now. This world is spinning at a certain frequency and this album whirls in your mind like a celling fan on a hot summer night. This is one of the best Headphone recordings I own out of my 1000+ collection. Thurston and Kim's songs dominate this album for me much like Siter. If you like Sonic Youth this album Is A must have along with 1991 The Year Punk Broke Through. Sweet Shine Is my Favorite Song. Thats right period.

5 out of 5 stars Great, top to bottom.......2006-09-13

This was the first Sonic Youth album I listened to, so for a long time I figured my opinion on it didn't count. Had to bow to the opinions of those long time fans, you know, who didn't seem to care for this one. I've since heard several other SY albums over the years, and I always gave them a great chance -- because, damn, this is the group that made Experimental Jet Set, etc. And I think I'm ready to commit now -- this album was their best, at least of the ones I know. It was one of the greatest albums of the 90's. There isn't a bad song on it, and the best ones are, well, transcendent. I can't rate this album any higher.

5 out of 5 stars Their best?.......2006-05-29

Sonic Youth was always good, this may be their best, and one of 4 great 90's albums, along with "CIA Drug Fest" by Old Skull, "Undisputed Attitude" by Slayer, and "We Are They Who Ache With Amorous Love" by Half Japanese. "Winners Blues" is acoustic, a crazy move for these noisemakers, and then we get what we really came for, noisy improv-ish songs that are fantastic, exciting, and occasionally intelligible! Some of the early SY stuff is a little overrated, but this, "EVOL", "Goo", and "Confusion is Sex" are sure to please fans of noisy music.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy.......2006-04-24

it's amazing how everytime SY can make an album that is completely different than the previous one. Again so now, after the 'commercial' -Dirty- (which was an awesome record) comes this one.

Starting with the previous unexplored world of acoustic lo-fi, which was relatively big in the indie scene back then, in 'Winner Blues' comes an instant SY classic, 'Bull in Heather'.
For some reason this song is perfect for around 5 am in the morning, it just has that scary feeling, but in a seductive, sexy way that borders on the pornographic when Kim is droning up numbers. Kim's songs are very good on this album by the way, 'Doctor's Orders' having a great chorus you can sing along, and it could almost be a Nirvana chorus.

There are some swing-and-misses, it could have done without 'Androgynous Mind'

In line with 'Dirty', there are some great Thurston Moore songs, if you can call them that. While never reaching the level of 'Sugar Kane' or 'Chapell Hill' songs like 'Waist' and 'Screaming Skull' (with a great riff as a break) have their moments.

It may not be the best SY album, but it's still very good and worth listening to over and over

4 out of 5 stars Good record.......2006-03-06

This is one of sonic youth's best work I think,If you are new to sonic youth this isn't a bad start.

If all Sonic Youth albums pretty much sound alike, as skeptics grumble, some Sonic Youth albums definitely sound more alike than others. And Sonic Nurse is one of those. Practically Sonic Youth concentrate, the disc manages to sound like a distillation of the band's career and a promise that they can keep doing this forever. Sonic Youth has trimmed away its more direct hooks, while also curbing its artier indulgences. That isn't to say that melody or noise is absent--especially when it's Kim Gordon's turn to rant on cuts such as "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream"--but that these elements are carefully balanced and defer to an overall sound that's richer than ever now that newest member Jim O'Rourke has fully integrated himself into the band's gestalt. The mood may be pastoral and domestic, but often, as on "Peace Attack," it's grounded in an undercurrent of concern. --Keith Harris

5 out of 5 stars Gave up, but this renews my faith in good music!.......2006-05-26

I wasn't a huge fan of Murray Street, but this album blows me away. After Murray Street, I thought maybe they had lost their touch and weren't going to retire with a kick. Well I was proven wrong. I was really surprised that they came out with this, I had kind of given up on them since they came out with Murray Street (Sorry Murray Street fans), and then I just looked them up for old times sake, and whadya know - an awesome album. This is as good as it gets as far as good music is concerned. I can't wait for their new album to come out!

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth Progressing .......2006-03-18

Another album, experimental as always, but at the same time it is listenable.....The melodies are obscure, consisting of harmonics, and sound manipulation with the effects.deep bass ..the drums are used in complex time signatures, making it stand out and has a new approach making it different than the other albums......chaotic noize and complex melodies... the sound goes on........

5 out of 5 stars A tribute to the electric guitar.......2006-01-27

I liked 2000's "MURRAY STREET" a lot, and was interested to see what direction they would take this one in. I wasn't sure I would like it. I was not disappointed though, and now i think of the two albums as companion pieces, not sure which i like more, though certainly this is a more lengthy, and probably developed record.
PATTERN RECOGNITION - this song just kicks ass, no way around that. i love the riff, the lyrics, kim's vocals, everything.
UNMADE BED - this might be my favorite song on the album, but that would be hard to say for sure. not too much noise or experimentation here, just a very poignant song that is sonically blistering and beautiful, and has excellent arrangement, touching vocals, and amazing feeling. the guitars are just unbelievably great. short, but packs so much into it.
DRIPPING DREAM - i've heard a lot of good things about this song, and i think it was one of the first ones i liked when i first heard this album, but now it doesn't seem as good as i thought. it's good, just.. it gets better.
MARIAH CAREY AND THE ARTHUR DOYLE HAND CREAM - oh, wait.. did they change the name? oh, i see. it's now KIM GORDON. probably afraid of offending ole' miss carey. not a bad song, they played this when i saw them on tour for murray street. it's enjoyable, but nothing amazing.
STONES - this would have to rival UNMADE BED for favorite on the album. the guitar work here just blows my mind, and the bridge and climax of this song just send me into sonic ecstasy. due to misfortunate events, i didn't get to see them tour on this album, but i had REALLY wanted to hear this song live. there is so much intensity in the playing.
DUDE RANCH NURSE - this song is really good as well. i mostly like it for its lyrics, and thought the album should have been called this instead of sonic nurse. kim really grabs you with her vocals in this song, "Let nurse give you a shot!".. it's very erotic in some weird way that only some of us could understand, haha.
NEW HAMPSHIRE - a good song, somewhat autobiographical for thurston, i gather. good lyrics, good vocal, great guitar work once again.
PAPER CUP EXIT - another high point of the album, but i'm not sure what to say about it. love the lyrics, love the guitar work, yadda yadda. i sound like a broken record. this is a lee vocal, and one of his best ones. one of the more political songs on the album, and a bit less obnoxiously so than the last track..
I LOVE YOU GOLDEN BLUE - somewhat in the vein of 'SYMPATHY FOR THE STRAWBERRY,' and although i like the other better, this does a good job. starts out with the noisy part like 'sympathy,' and then goes into a sultry kim vocal. very haunting, beautiful. but also, somewhat hopeful at moments. very good song.
PEACE ATTACK - i really liked this song when i first got the album, and i still think it definitely has a good point, and the climax of the guitars is pretty kickass. it just seems a bit kitsch now.
so overall, this is one of the best albums, like, ever. buy it. steal it. whatever you have to do, if you're a fan of the guitar, get this album.

5 out of 5 stars This nurse can take my temperature anytime!.......2006-01-13

This would be album 13 by the greatest rock band of the last 25 years (that is, "major" albums, as opposed to EPs, live albums, best-of's, SYR releases, side/solo projects and various other sonic effluvia). The band will be eligible for Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame membership in about 2007 (don't start writing that speech yet, Thurston; if Patti Smith and Iggy can't make the cut yet, the Hall is useless anyway) and by now their name can apply more to their actual kids. Normally this means that it would be time to bland out and gently jam their way into senescence. For Our Heroes, this is fortunately not the case.

Upon intitial listenings to "Sonic Nurse," one can be forgiven for thinking otherwise. The songs are generally long (only two clock in under 5 minutes) and some have relatively little--or none--of the free form sonic freakouts that are supposed to be the band's stock in trade. Heck, some of Thurston's offerings here have more than a little of a certain hippy-ish vibe. On "Stones" he even sings "the dead are alright with me." Wait, is that as in the Grateful freakin' Dead? The full lyrics are of course too eliptical to tell for sure, although they seem to be about endurance in the face of adversity and death, so there's a definite acknowledgement of getting older, anyway. Mind you, song titles like "Peace Attack" with its "nature sex" refrain (at first I thought it was the more punkish "nature sucks") can worry even hard-core SY fans. Thurston has described "Sonic Nurse" as a cross between Black Flag's "Damaged" and Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors," and one can argue that it's too much of the latter, but give this one a chance to sink in and you'll be hooked.

Not everything is peace n' love, thankfully. Kim Gordon has turned out to be the band's edgiest songwriter (check out her SYR project with Ikue Mori and DJ Olive), and her contributions kick those jams out the door, down the street, into your house and knock you over but good. The album's opening salvo "Pattern Recognition," about pro corporate trendspotters, buzzes and screams like some of the primo "Dirty" material, and what can be said about the puckishly titled "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream"? It's a gossipy, hilarious take on recent events in the life of Mariah Carey ("how was your date with Eminem?/Did he bake you and then forsake you?") with the album's stormiest musical backing that is, in a word, fierce. Kudos also for name-checking free jazz great Doyle as well.

It should also be noted that despite the softer moments, the album is still loads more dissonant than most of what passes for "alt rock" these days. Sure, I love the Arcade Fire as much as anyone, but it's great to have a group that combines that level of songwriting prowess with the musical un-orthodoxy bred of punk, free jazz and experimental musics. Sonic Youth are still more than relevant, my friend--they're necessary. No Wave? Try Now Wave.

5 out of 5 stars Sonic Youth keeps it going........2005-09-08

Wow. Sonic Youth is indeed a band that has racked up the years as they continue to throw out album after album. And still, their magic hasn't faded a bit with Sonic Nurse. Starting off with "Pattern Recognition", this album is loaded with catchy noise songs, an array of sounds accompanied by the amazing vocals of Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon. Despite not having the mainstream, `normal' sound of most music nowadays, the songs on this album, such as "Pattern Recognition", "Unmade Bed", and "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream", and the like, are, dare I say, catchier than anything you can find on Top 40 radio.

So as a whole, this album really is a pleasure to the ears. If you like noise rock, Sonic Youth, or just good music at all, I strongly recommend "Sonic Nurse". It's one of, if not the best, album of 2004.

3 out of 5 stars Disc 2 non-existent.......2007-02-07

I have to echo the comments of the prior reviewer here. There is no disc 2 with this particular item. I ordered this, looking forward to the extended tracks on the bonus disc, but what arrived had only one disc (disc 1 above). I spoke with amazon customer service, so they sent another copy (while I returned the original), and that too had only one disc. It's great Bangles music on that disc, but don't get your hopes up about any bonus disc...

4 out of 5 stars Definitive Collection is a nice collection but lacks the extended play versions........2007-01-04

This remastered edition of the Bangles' "Definitive Collection" brings back great memories but does NOT contain all the songs that are advertised. The desciption for both the original and remastered "Definitive Collection(s)" lists a total of 26 songs (21 tracks plus five extended versions). The Product Details lists the Definitive Collection [Original Recording Remastered] [Import] originally relased on January 1, 1995 as having one disc but then on the track listings itemizes the contents of two discs (the first disc has 21 tracks and the second disc is supposed to contain the Extended Mixes and Remixes of Walk Like an Egyptian, In Your Room, Haxy Shade of Winter, Walking Down Your Street, and Manic Monday). The Definitive Collection [Import]that was also listed as originally being released on January 1, 1995 lists one disc with 26 tracks. The extended versions are tracks 16, and 23-26.
Other than the missing tracks, this is a great disc if you like the Bangles' music.

4 out of 5 stars A 2-DISK (STUDIO & LIVE) BYRDS SAMPLER.......2004-08-04

Although the album contents as listed above suggest a single CD, this is actually a two CD set. The first disk of 25 studio cuts runs 72:58, and a second disk of 4 live performances from '(Untitled)' clocks in at 24:56.

The first CD is probably the best single disk compilation to cover the band's entire career, and despite some curious choices it is for the most part very good listening. I love the opening programming sequence of the 5 "Tambourine" album cuts, and that promising start is sustained with growing excitement for most of the disk -- at least through "Sweetheart's" 'You Ain't Goin' Nowhere'.

The only album not covered is "Dr. Byrds", which is represented by the overdubbed single 'Lay Lady Lay' issued in that period. It failed to make the original "Dr. Byrds" album in any form, and whatever your opinion of that single (which many find either hugely impressive or disasterous), omission of 'This Wheel's on Fire' (especially), 'Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man', or something from "Dr. Byrds" is for me a significant stumble -- after which the program loses momentum and fails (in my opinion) to adequately convey the quality of the later albums.

'America's Great National Pastime' especially is an unworthy conclusion to a Byrds career retrospective. Almost anything else from "Farther Along" would have been more satisfying.

Still I have to admit enjoying the way this program laces the obligatory cuts with unexpected choices like 'Lay Lady Lay' and 'I Trust'. This makes for a fresh listening experience to USA fans, where the first of these did not chart and the second was never issued as a single.

The sound quality is good but a little short of first rate, so I suspect these were compiled from European EQ masters rather than the originals. In fact there's a production error tip-off: the slamming door that opens 'Get To You' on "Notorious Byrd Brothers" appears here at the end of 'Wasn't Born To Follow'; the engineeer thought it closed the latter track instead of opening the former. Clearly, he was working from an EQ copy of the "Notorious" album, not the song's master. And 'Lady Friend' is a rarity, the original monaurel single, which may interest collectors. It sounds fine and you probably won't notice the monaurel track without headphones.

The second disk of live performances from "(Untitled)" is an entertainingly edited little excerpt that seamlessly melds 'Lover of the Bayou' and 'Mr. Tambourine Man' into a continuous performance, followed by the 16 mimute 'Eight Miles High' jam; as on "(Untitled)" the jam ends with a bridge song and McGuinn's farewell -- but this disk then edits in "Mr. Spaceman" as an encore brought on by the cheering crowd.

Overall I found this an entertaining album worth buying even for Byrds fans who have everything. The sheer volume of material rates four stars at the least. It's a nice alternate program for those times when you're in the mood for the Byrds from a fresh perspective, and not a bad introductory album.

I also like having a 25 minute Byrds live mini-concert on a separate disk.

However, as a full career retrospective of this band's long run on Columbia, "Definitive Collection" fails to beat out the 2 CD set "The Essential Byrds".

5 out of 5 stars Drovers offer a great blend of Irish folk and rock music.......2005-09-20

This CD is great. It's perfect for those that like traditional Irish music, but it also appeals to those that that prefer the rock genre. The songs are unique, moving and catchy. It offers a nice blend of fast, upbeat songs and slower ballads. Appropriate for children and adults of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Six Star !.......2005-02-06

I first heard of The Drovers, when I saw the movie 'Blink', then tried in vein to get hold of a copy in South Africa...None of our outlets had ever heard of The Drovers. Thanks to Amazon.com I got hold of World of Monsters, and cannot understand how on earth they are not world famous, but then got hold of a copy of Little High Sky Show...Not worth the effort !
I have no doubt in my mind, that if The Drovers stick to the style and creativeness of World of Monsters, and perhaps approach a recognized label, they will be rated as the top Irish type Celtic group ever.....A fantastic composition !
Can some-one suggest an equal to World of Monsters ?
Absolutely Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Original.......1999-02-03

The Drovers have obtained a loyal cult following, especially around their native Chicago, playing venues and drawing crowds normally reserved for more commercial acts. Their original release, World of Monsters, explains it all. Very original, very inspiring. Their use of strings blends deep within the music, creating a hypnotic sense that for once doesn't put you to sleep, but rather gets you hooked.

5 out of 5 stars That's Not All..........1998-11-30

Everyone here on this page has stated that The Drovers are totally underrated and they are right. If you can listen to any cut on this disc and not tap your toes,(let alone do some Michael Flatley impersonation) then call the coroner because you must be dead!! The Drovers are the real deal and with performances in 2 major motion pictures ("Blink" and "Backdraft") it seems that only Hollywood knows their great talent and potential. Now if they'd just release their new CD...

5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal achievement.......1998-09-17

All right, I'm not going to mince words: the Drovers are the best live band I've ever seen, and "World of Monsters" is one of the best albums I've ever heard. This was recorded during the two-year span in the early 90's when they were at their peak; almost the entire CD is first and second takes. "The Boys and the Babies," "All Good Times are Past and Gone," and "Book of Songs" alone are worth the price of admission, but honestly, there are no missteps here. I have yet to encounter anyone who understands both Celtic and rock, and the juxtaposition between the two, as well as the Drovers do. It's high time the world outside of Chicago caught up to these guys.

Women in industrial music are a bit like pedestrians in Los Angeles--yeah, you'll find them, but you have to look really hard. Happily, a woman (Yone Dudas) decodes half the feedback in this Italian-Canadian band, and not as a pretty voiced vocalist, either (that's handled by musical partner Marco Biagiotti, who sounds anything but pretty), but rather as a keyboardist, sequencer, and percussionist--traditionally male bastions. Fine, you say, but what about the music? More good news. Decoded Feedback follow up 1997's strong Technophoby with an even stronger disc loaded with clean, energetic beats and inventive keyboard sequences that contrast nicely with Biagiotti's "No, I haven't had a tracheotomy, that's just how I sing" voice. But perhaps the best thing about Bio-Vital is its demure quality; Dudas and Biagiotti clearly know how to use space and pacing to their advantage and never unnecessarily cram a song full of samples or pounding, sludgy beats. In an era when the objective in industrial dance music is to hammer you into submission, Decoded Feedback have made a true listening album. --Steve Landau

5 out of 5 stars An electro-industrial masterpiece.......2005-03-22

This album captures many of the best elements of industrial and combines them in this very enjoyable album. Bio-Vital was my introduction to Decoded Feedback and almost 3 years later remains my favorite album from them and one of my favorite albums in my collection out of any.

The songs on Bio-Vital are very well put together and have a fun, driving beat and rythm. The vocalist's distorted vocals are somewhat cliche in the industrial genre and many groups use them to cover up the lack of singing ability on part of the vocalist. Not so with Decoded Feedback. Marco Biagiotti can indeed sing and his vocals are used to great effect on this album, helping augment the music and not just fill in. Yone Dudas has great skill in making the songs catchy and fun to listen to.

My favorite tracks on the album are Breathe, Bio-Vital, and God's Sin. There are no really weak tracks on here and I can play this album end to end without hitting the track skip button. If you enjoy the electro-industrial sound then Bio-Vital is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars A dark intense electro group with a rather strange name.......2004-09-29

I think this is probably the best Decoded Feedback album, at least that I've heard. The album has a perfect blend of dark gothic vocals with intensely hard electronic beats. If you combined Wumpscut with Funker Vogt you'd probably have something like this. It's an improvement from their previous album Technophoby. The songs are more unique and distinguishable from one another on this album than on the previous.

So check them out. This is one of the better releases in the electronic music genre. Decoded Feedback is a rather strange name for a group though isn't it?

5 out of 5 stars An awesome album by Decoded Feedback.......2004-09-23

I love Decoded Feedback, always have. This is simply one of their best works ever. The music is awesome, the lyrics are also good and the vocals are distored just right so that it al blends in so well. It's an awesome album from start through finish. This is a definite must-own for anyone into EBM, etc.

4 out of 5 stars Bio-Vital: Decoded Feedback's best album yet.......2000-07-14

Attention all electro/industrial fans...this one's for you. Combines hypnotic synthesizer sounds with a steady beat for great balance. If you're in the mood for a fast/more aggresive song, listen to the title track "Bio-Vital" or "Ragescape". If you prefer something a bit slower, choose the opening track "Breathe" or "Again". A great buy for any techno fan.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2000-03-20

I saw Decoded Feedback live when haujobb cancelled, and was completely blown away by them. They had a very simple stage setup, but the atmosphere and music were so beautiful. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. I ordered this album, and it didn't disappoint. My favorite tracks are Bio-Vital, Machine Kontrol, Again, and of course Breathe. A very beautiful work, remnicent of both EBM and goth music.
