Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14
Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

Good on Elvis for risking the ridicule of a blinkered pop world with this unprecedented (for him, certainly, and most anyone short of Kurt Weill) and quite lovely album of bitchy, wise, and funny art songs accompanied by strings. His freshest, most evolved work in years. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
The definition of Musical Genius.......2007-05-22
If/when this ever is reprinted you MUST purchase it. It is beautiful in ways that I can't describe. For a writer/musician who is known for writing some amazing pieces, this is his pinnacle.
You will sob. You will laugh. You will rage. You will be haunted.
From a purely musical perspective, when you listen to this CD you are in the presence of great genius.
Listen to it alone, at least at first. Listen in the dark and let the imagery flow over you like fog.
Epistolary reflections on Costellian themes..........2006-01-16
Elvis Costello (Declan MacManus) has done his fair share of collaborations in the past decade. From the Grammy-award winning project with Burt Bacharach in 1998 to 2001's subdued "For the Stars" with Anne-Sophie von Otter Costello has branched out from his rock roots in diverse directions. "The Juliet Letters" from 1993 was the first in a long line of such collaborations. Costello and the Brodsky Quartet were brought together by mutual appreciation (Costello went to Brodsky Quartet concerts while the Brodsky Quartet attended Costello concerts). And Costello's now ex-wife Cait O'Riordan provided the epistolary theme for the project. She spotted a newspaper article about a professor that responded to letters addressed to "Juliet Capulet". Costello then presented the article to the quartet for inspiration. The group of five ended up writing all of the music and words (though much of the music is credited to "MacManus"). The results fall somewhere between classical song cycles and Beatle-inspired "string rock" (a la "Yesterday" and "Eleanor Rigby"). Feelings of melancholy and anger pervade most of the songs. The strings punctuate these feelings perfectly. Fans of Costello's rock music probably won't find much to appreciate here. But the album contains many of the same classic Costello themes and vocal styles utilized in his rock.
Like a Richardson novel, letters provide the basis for the project. Failed and frustrated relationships abound. "Thank you for the flowers / I threw them on the fire / And I burned the photographs that you had enclosed / GOD they were ugly children" Costello sings venemously on the driving "I Almost Had a Weakness". After all, nothing seeps loneliness more than an unanswered love letter. But more than love gets the treatment here. Other songs include a suicide note ("Dear Sweet Filthy World"), a letter from a soldier to a stranger ("I Thought I'd Write to Juliet"), a bizarre experiment in selective exhumation ("Damnation's Cellar"), a reflection on separation ("Why?"), and a letter full of hope in the face of despair ("The Birds Will Still Be Singing"). Many songs explore the sad one-sided nature of letter writing. And no song responds to any other song. This fills the songs that deal with ineffable questions with an almost desparing isolation. But not everything is doom and gloom. "This Offer is Unrepeatable" picks up the mood with a humorously exaggerated letter from a scam artist (and it more than a little resembles the Tom Waits' classic "Step Right Up"). The final song injects some hope into the stark themes in the manner of "Old Man River": "Banish all dismay / Extinguish every sorrow / If I'm lost or I'm forgiven / The birds will still be singing". So in the end, things aren't as bad as they seem. The world goes on regardless of our ephemeral concerns. And as long as the world goes on hope exists.
This CD contains a lot of very beautiful and moving music. Two violins, a viola, a violincello, and voice provide all of the instrumentation. Costello branched out into something very different here. And not all of his fans appreciated it. Regardless, in retrospect "The Juliet Letters" pointed to the future. This year Costello will tour orchestra halls. Not only that, he also wrote a full orchestral score ("Il Sogno"). Strings appear more frequently in his recent music. And year by year he seems to embrace "classical" music more intensely. Still, he hasn't abandoned rock and pop (as "When I Was Cruel" and "The Delivery Man" testify). Though this early collaboration remains somewhat underappreciated, it nonetheless fully showcases Elvis Costello's diverse, adaptable, and broad musical scope. Costello will doubtless appear somewhere on the list of accomplished twentieth and twenty-first century musicians.
Beauty? Truth? You Can't Handle Either!!.......2006-01-06
The reason the Costello/Brodsky collaboration "Juliet Letters" is such a difficult listen is also why its the MOST SINGULARLY BRILLIANT ALBUM IN THE ENTIRE ELVIS COSTELLO DISCOGRAPHY! And this declaration is coming from a man who could write a thesis on "Armed Forces" and "Imperial Bedroom" in his sleep! The idea of setting "letters" to music has certainly been done before, but Costello sticks his neck out, both as a composer and singer in ways he'd never done before. Accompanying yourself with just a string quartet (no snarling guitars or euphonious keyboard filigrees,) is the surest way to test your mettle as a vocalist. And sure, sometimes Costello's voice isn't exactly the strongest, but like say, Billie Holliday it always seems to occur precisely when the lyric calls for it: check out "Who Do You Think You Are?" or "The Birds Will Still Be Singing" and you'll hear exactly what I mean. Even his ode to a chain letter, "This Offer Is Unrepeatable" serves up a cheeky bit of satire worthy of "Three Penny Opera." Of course, you can only experience this album sporadically - could anyone watch "Death Of A Saleman" or "Long Day's Journey Into Night" repeatedly without losing one's mind? Emotionally-wrought exercises like "Letters" take a lot out of you, even when you're merely the observer (or listener,) rather than the participant. But that's what makes the journey, however bittersweet, one worth taking.
Deep and moving music from Elvis Costello........2005-06-18
The Juliet Letters is a moving colaboration from Elvis Costello and the Brodsky String Quartet. His deep vocals are complemented by the string quartet. This album is
neither fish nor fowl (classical or pop) it's just a musical
exercise. The strings are some of my favorite compositions,
(viola, cello and violin). Elvis Costello not only got the Brodsky Quartet a bigger audience but he inspired them to
write their own music (a third of the songs are composed by the Quartet).
While it might not be everyones cup of tea, the music is brilliant and Elvis reaches octave levels I thought I would never imagine he could ever attain. Maybe sometime in the near future he'll work with them again. I applaud him for taking such a bold step in making a non-commercial album.
Highly recommended.
Give it a Try.......2004-03-03
I've been listening to a lot of Philip Glass and Steve Reich lately, and its caused me to go back to this album to give it another go.Previously I thought that it was an interesting experiment which hadn't worked out very well. Now I think that it is a good album for rockers and classical music lovers to use to stretch their ears a little. So called crossover albums are usually horrifying-does anyone else remember that album that Procol Harum did with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra? Elvis flatly denounces the concept in the liner notes. And not everything on this album works. It isn't the brilliant work that some of the other reviewers seem to think that it is.But it is a worthwhile experiment and a work that should be given a fair chance.Rockers and classical music lovers tend to be snobbish and dismissive of one another. This is a good work for them to live with for a while. When Elvis and the Brodsky's click-on "Jackson Monk and Rowe" or "Romeos Seance"-the results are as beautiful and valid as anything either of them have ever done.
Three stars because some of this simply doesn't work. But this is a work anyone who likes Elvis or the Brodsky's should have in their collection.

A VERY FINE STRING QUARTET..........2006-12-10
Gould's String Quartet "Op. 1" is a rich essay in the vein of the twilight of late Romanticism/early Modernism. It's a synthesis of late Beethoven, Wagner, Bruckner, Brahms, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Reger, Franck, and early Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern. A substantial work, it runs about 36 mins. Here it is given an earnest reading by the first chairs of the Cleveland SO in 1960.
GG's SQ is composed in the key of f minor--a somewhat unusual key sometimes explored by Mozart (Fantasy K.608) and Beethoven (Piano Sonata, Op.57; String Quartet Op.95). GG says of the key of f minor: "[it has] a certain obliqueness . . . halfway between complex and stable, between upright and lascivious, between gray and highly tinted."
Gould conceived of the piece as being very abstract--almost indifferent to the string quartet medium. He performed it himself on the piano.
The work has been both highly praised and harshly critizied. Gould himself was very self-effacing and almost sheepish in his reception of praise or condemnation of the piece, but ultimately he was quite satisfied with it, deigning not to revise it in later years.
It stands as a monument to his own personal ethos, and stands on its own as an unique work of art. Certainly is can be enjoyed by enthusiasts of Strauss' string works; Franck's SQ; Reger's SQs; Bruckner's Quintet; Schoenberg's 1st SQ; and Berg's SQ "Op. 3."
.
Glenn Gould, The Composer.......2001-04-21
Glenn Gould was undoubtedly one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. Of course, he was also a true individual, eccentric and opinionated, frequently dividing the classical music scene into two camps, or at least making them scratch their heads. This collection then is an interesting addition to "The Glenn Gould Edition" series from Sony. For once, the attention shifts from Gould the performer to Gould the composer. Included here are two Gould original compositions, "String Quartet, Op.1" and "So You Want To Write A Fugue?" They are challenging pieces to listen to, but rewarding in their own way (well maybe not the comical "Fugue"), particularly for gaining more and different insight into Gould's creative mind. It is no mistake that this CD is rounded out by Shostakovich's String Quintet and Poulenc's "Aubade," (which both feature Gould on piano), as these pieces cover similar sonic territory. This music is not for everyone -- those who know only Gould's Bach will be in for a shock -- but it is nonetheless an important document in the multifaceted career of Glenn Gould.

Originally released in 1980, the Gould Silver Jubilee Album brought together unreleased odds and ends culled from Gould's recording sessions. They have since been spread across Sony's Glenn Gould Edition. A Glenn Gould Fantasy, a comic discussion involving Gould's character-voice alter egos bantering back and forth, appears on CD for the first time, along with Critics Call-Out Corner. The humor is stilted, contrived, and interesting only to true believers. Likewise, a previously unreleased 1981 Bach Italian Concerto seems static and self-conscious compared to the pianist's glorious 1959 recording. Still, Gould completists will certainly want to give this set a look-see. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
Scarlatti and CPE Bach really sparkle. GG at his best.......2006-10-14
On the evidence of this disc it's a shame GG didn't record complete albums of Scarlatti and CPE Bach. This would have been a million times preferable to his horrid recordings of music he had not much sympathy for (eg.some of his Beethoven and Mozart):having sad that, the ist movement of the Pastoral Symphony is stunning.Much better infact than Gould's CBC broadcast version of te 1st movement which is too prosaic.
Insight into the real Glenn Gould.......2005-02-09
Glenn Gould was highly sensitive to criticism. Yet he often was the recipient of it, critiqued for playing Bach on the piano, for playing Mozart too fast, or too slow, or both. In "A Glenn Gould Fantasy," Mr. Gould creates for himself the opportunity to respond to his critics (most played by himself in amusing voices) - who have names like Karlheinz Kloppweiser (an eager German proponent of polyphony) and Theodore Slutz (a mellow New York beatnik). Mr. Gould was also famous for giving up concertizing, a result of his fear of leaving even the tiniest detail to chance. So the fantasy concludes with a mock performance by Gould on a sinking oil tanker in the arctic.
Glenn Gould is usually presented to us as an intensely serious Artist. This is a wonderful reminder of his humanity and silly sense of humor.
Listeners should be warned that the fantasy is chock full of inside jokes and musicological silliness that may be lost on them if they are not familiar with Gould's idiosyncracies, the criticisms of his style, or 20th century musical trends. (For example, if the idea of a "Kodaly Kindergarten" is funny to you, as it is to me, you'll like this. If not, save your money.) In keeping with his personality, Glenn Gould is not concerned here with whether anyone else gets the joke. But if you do get the joke, it's pretty funny. It's also a fascinating window into Mr. Gould as a man and an artist.
Gould's 2nd Italian Concerto Recording.......2004-10-27
As much as I have always found great pleasure in Glenn Gould's original record of the Bach Italian Concerto, I must admit that his second version was NOT a disappointment to me. Like his later interpretation of the Goldberg Variations, the newer Italian Concerto sounds less mechanical--less computer-like--and more human than the first record. That this 1981 recording seems less brilliant is due primarily, I think, to the very mellow tone of the piano used, rather than to big changes in the pianist's technique. Gould's first piano had a much brighter tone. However, in the higher notes of the piece, the new piano affords the performer a breath-taking legato that is very song-like and much more soulful, so to speak.
This CD opened Glenn Gould for me.......2002-08-05
I must admit I knew very little about Glenn Gould until I received this CD as a present. I put it into my car's CD player (not the best place to listen to classical music), and for several weeks I didn't change CDs - I just listened to this one! My absolute favourite is C.P.E. Bach's sonata.
the great glenn gould.......2001-02-23
The main attraction for me to this album was the Beethoven transcription and the assorted works by Strauss, Scriabin and others, and of course my intense love of the music of Glenn Gould. Gould seems to have fallen out of public favor now, but his music remains just as intense and insightful as ever. The performance of the first movement of Beethoven's sixth is amazing... it is a work that stands up well as a fully realized piece in its own right. Ophelialieder is a wonderful work of melancholy songs, and here the work really shines. This is a wonderful and eccentric work, which describes Gould perfectly.

A good chance to recieve a Gramophone Award..........1999-06-11
Just a brief run-through of the disc reveals some very interesting things. I liked the idyllic quality of the Maconchy, which is very unlike her string quartets, I must say! And the Chen Yi piece has a haunting beauty to it as well. The Tania Leon has some interesting percussion additions in it that makes for a very colorful piece, and of course the Tailleferre is marvelous. She's a contemporary craftsman that doesn't usually wander too far from home, but her works always sound a bit "on the edge." I know several other of her compositions and enjoy them quite a lot. She's probably the most "establishment" of the composers, I would judge. It's interesting that the Carwithen piece isn't anything like some of her other works. I take it she is indeed a very versatile composer. The Barbara Kolb is one I'd like to spend more time with, because it seemed very fresh to me and even whimsical in places. Glad to see these ladies don't lose their sense of humor, even when writing "serious" music. In my opinion Sir George has produced a distinguished collection of works by a much-neglected corner of the field, and I'm really glad to see that happening. Especially for that reason, but by its own merits also I hope the disc does well. In terms of sheer content and presentability, I would say it stands a good chance of being recognized by some of the more notable judges -- the Gramophone Awards, such as. In as much as the performances are concerned, I can't say that I've ever heard of the FPO, but their playing on the disc was suberb, and I found the sound quality to be balanced and satisfying.

Customer Reviews:
Barber's wonderful, beautiful music.......2001-11-21
This is a collection of 19 works by Samuel Barber. It contains some very popular Barber works (Adagio for Strings, Medea's Meditation), some lesser known (Summer Music, The Lovers) and many I'd never heard before. All are beautiful.
This album's version of Medea's Meditation and Dance of Vengeance is surprisingly slow tempoed. It caught me off balance for a bit but it was a nice change of pace. The Hermit Songs were all instrumental only -- also nice for a change of pace. One song, "To Be Sung on Water" performed by the Oregon Repertory Singers, was absolutely glorious. "Hesitation Waltz", a piano duet, is an unusual work with emotional undercurrents that I didn't notice at first listen.
It's almost impossible these days to find an album which contains something other than the four or five most popular Barber works. This one showcases 17 of those hard-to-find pieces. What a great album!
A broad survey of Barber's wonderful music.......2001-04-05
In the history of 20th century classical music, Samuel Barber is a well-loved, if not "revolutionary", figure. His skill with the craft of melody is justly famous, and his work reflects elegance and craft; however, he was also a master of contrapuntal composition ("Adagio for Strings", aka the second movement of his String Quartet, could be used in advanced composition classes as a masterpiece of counterpoint) and a great orchestrator. His Capricorn Concerto is a jewel-like triple concerto (trumpet, flute and oboe with strings), full of rhythm, movement and light-- the second movement is especially brilliant, with delightful interplay among the solo instruments and a lovely slow section (soft strings and an exquisitely melancholy short oboe solo). The rest of the selections are also well-done and welcome (if the "Adagio" is overplayed, the "Hermit Songs" are just not performed enough!). A nice collection of Barber's high-quality oeuvre.

Customer Reviews:
Great - especially for music teachers.......2000-09-25
After many years of listening to Glenn Gould's piano playing, it was a pleasant surprise to run across his compositions in recorded form. There have not been many performers who have tried their hand at composing. I found the "So You Want to write a Fugue" worth the price of the CD alone - especially for music educators who would like to have something audibly "different" to illustrate this music form to their students. I also enjoyed his string quartet and the piano-bassoon duet as well as others.
some forgettable, some not.......1999-12-01
Gould was a great pianist, but his compositions, while good, don't match that greatness. Some of the pieces--in particular the string quartet and the piano-bassoon duet--are excellent and in my opnion worth the price of the CD. Others (``So You Want to Write a Fugue?,'' ``Lieberson Madrigal'') are cute but forgettable.
