Goldfrapp are Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory, This is their first ever release and prefigures their debut album. The feel is French 60's film noir soundtrack...it's Francois Hardy meets Ennio Morricone and John Barry at 5 O'Clock in the morning on the banks of the Seine...slightly hung over...slightly melancholic.     If one likes traditional songs created during the days of the sail ship from the U.S. and England, then this is a good cd for that. I enjoyed it very much.

    This CD is a real delight as Michael Feinstein is one of my favorite performers. He does a great job with this music by Burton Lane. I have both Volumns of music by Burton Lane and I enjoy listenting to both of these CD's

    It took awhile for me to enjoy the songs on this CD, but once I did, I couldn't stop listening. There are romantic songs, funny songs, powerful songs. A little something for everyone. If you don't enjoy it at the first listen - don't give up! This CD will definately grow on you!

    The Norwegian Kirsten Flagstad was the pre-eminent Wagnerian soprano of the 20th century, but she also gave hundreds of lieder and song recitals, the pick of which bejewel this ravishing double CD. the first offers three complete song-cycles, Grieg's rippling 'Haugtussa', all pastoral maidens and brooks, Flagstad singing as light as a breeze; Wagner's 'Wesendonck-Lieder', that ghost of his masterpiece 'Tristan and Isolde', my favourite lieder cycle - this is the best interpretation I have ever heard, passionate, yearning and, in 'Im Treibhaus' and 'Traume', genuinely spine-tingling. Sibelius' enchanting songs complete the CD, with 'The Maiden's Tryst' unexpectedly lush and romantic.

    The second disc of Anglo-American songs may be less demanding, but are no less delightful. Highlights include Landan Ronald's operettish 'O Lovely Night', Frank Bridge's rollicking 'Love Went A-Riding', Bax's hushed 'The White Peace', Elgar's hymn-like tribute to his vocation 'Speak Music', Delius' rapturous 'Love's Philosophy', as well as a tantalisingly muffled 1937 recording of Stephen Foster's 'Old Folks at Home'. There are also no less than four lullabies, which attests to the Victorian hangover on bourgeois tastes in the middle of the last century.

    Most of these recordings date from the 1950s, so the sound is relatively clear, and if Flagstad is past her operatic prime, her ability to express intense passion with an imperiously cool technique would put most modern singers to shame. her regular accompanist, Edwin McArthur, is a model of self-effacement, quietly playful and inventive in the background. My only complaint is that, at this price, surely a lyric sheet could have been provided. There is, however, a fascinating biographical piece, detailing, amongst other things, the soprano's dubious wartime conduct.

    To correct/inform the previous reviewer, Lovely Head is not a remake or a cover of another group; the song was written by Goldfrapp duo Wil and Alison. Ambient and mysterious, it is a hauntingly beautiful song topped off with some eerie lyrics. The Staré Mesto (dark) and Miss World (loungy) mixes were both done by Goldfrapp themselves, and while they are both kind of opposite to each other, together they make a great pair. This single from the UK seems to be hard to find as it is now long out-of-print, and while you can find the two remixes on other releases it is still a nice addition to the CD collection of a Goldfrapp collector. They're not for everyone, but it is my opinion that Goldfrapp are geniuses making absolutely beautiful, sexy music.

    And to correct Amazon's listing, the first track on this single is actually the Album Version of Lovely Head, not a single version.

    I need to know who did the original version because it is a VERY CREEPY SONG. I have it on an mp3 file I found years ago but lost the artist's name!!! arg. This is a popped up version and is just ok.

        This cd contains compositions for the church year (from Advent to Trinity Sunday) by Bram Beekman, organist of the 'Oostkerk' Middelburg (Netherlands) Bram Beekman himself performes the compositions on his organ, a baroque instrument by the builders 'De Rijckere' 1779. The works originated partly as improvisations performed during services and recitals, and notated from memory specially for this disc. The style varies considerably, ranging from romantic to cautiously modern; from sugarly and Reger-like to Messiaen. The pieces were conceived with the sound of the 'Oostkerk' organ in mind.
