On the Homer Simpson palm-to-the-forehead scale, many sci-fi fan gave Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich's 1996 alien-invasion blockbuster three slaps; their heads hurt just thinking about it. But as stoopid as the filmmaker's efforts were (and they hadn't even signed on for Godzilla yet!), at least composer David Arnold "rose" to the occasion, producing a Williamsian piece of overwrought orchestral and choral melodrama that virtually begs you to take the proceedings seriously. If Arnold had been working the genre in the '50s, there's a fair chance that that vaunted AFI top 100 films list would've included Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers; now, there's a movie. --Jerry McCulley

I'm not really a kid, but i don't want to sign up for Amazon to write this review. I have been collecting soundtracks for almost 10 years now. I started with this soundtrack in 1996 and have built to 300+ orchestral soundtracks. Having listened to most all of them, 10 years later ID4 still reigns supreme. David Arnold has been the basis of comparison to every composer i have ever heard, and i have heard ALOT!

This may upset a few people, but i think he is definitely the best in the business. Not necessarily for his ability to write catchy tunes (Williams), or recycle his own music (Horner), but because he can write music with the complexity that boggles the mind. I have listened to my copy of ID4 so many times in the last decade, that i bought a 2nd copy just in case the first one wears out.

The way each theme is captured and rarely heard the same way each time: i.e. the love theme, the alien theme, the good/bad guy theme....all of it is so amazingly tasty each time it's heard. You don't get bored with any theme! My favorite tracks are Evacuation/Firestorm, Base Attack, and The Day We Fight Back. And I can't go on without touching on his "End Credits" titled track. A nine minute masterpiece that is the best medley from any movie i have heard; and again, i have heard my share. These showcase the true genius of his writing. That's the only way to describe it: pure genius. His use of brass and his perfect blend of strings and voices just provides so much power behind whats going on in the movie, that you can literally see the movie on your eyelids as you lean back and listen to the soundtrack. How many soundtracks do that?!?!?

There are so many levels to his music, not to mention the brilliance that comes from every measure. He doesn't flaunt multi-meter like James Newton Howard or the Newmans (randy, thomas, and david)....but keeps the overflowing sound in a driving 4/4 time. This is what kept me seeking his upcoming soundtracks when i was 10 years younger. After i heard ID4, i had to see what else he had done: Stargate and Last of the Dogmen were all that had been out. I immediately purchased both. Since, i have acquired his other titles: The Musketeer, Godzilla, The Stepford Wives, all the bond films, Shaft (2000), even Changing Lanes. I have NEVER been disappointed with his music. He is consistently fresh and free with his styles and layered composition. I challenge anyone to compare David Arnold with any other composer out there.

In closing, I am a musician myself, in college going for a BAE in Music and composition. I give credit to David Arnold as my inspiration to write music. To me, he is the Mozart of film composition and i will watch his career and all of his works with great anticipation until one of two things occurs: he dies or i go deaf. I hope neither happen......

A Real Classic Soundtrack.........2005-03-17

Before I buy soundtracks, I watch the movie to see how well it goes. If I like it I buy it. Well after watching Independence Day I knew for sure I wanted the soundtrack. as it was just amazing.. David Arnold did a wonderful Job with each track..

It's just a shame that half the traxks didn't make it on the official release. as their is another Soundtrack which has 2 Discs and features every single song from the movie. Indepedence Day Bootleg. It's really hard to find on the internet. But if you use the right toolz. You might be in luck..

I bought the CD two years ago. I still enjoy it, as much as my newer CDs. It has a very good patriotic theme, and lots of cool action music.

ID4 - one of the best sci-fi soundtracks.......2003-03-27

Independence Day is with all it's flaws a good and entertaining movie, but the soundtrack is without flaws! While I watched the movie, I noticed that the music was very good. So I finally decided to bought it. As a composer David Arnold was already familiar to me, since I own the Stargate soundtrack also. As he did wonderful job in Stargate, he did in ID4 too. My personal favorites in the CD are tracks 1,2,4,7,10,11 and 14. End Titles is the best of the best, since it takes all themes to one and long track. I have just one complain: as many of the customers have said, the CD could have been a little longer. But this satisfies me greatly.

Classic score! A superior effort!.......2003-02-19

One of David Arnold's first movie scores and a totally overachieving effort. One of the first score's that I ever listened too, ID4 represents a high quality effort that I do not think Arnold has ever reached again. From his themes representing the heroics of Will Smith and Bill Pullman to his more electronic feel for the aliens, ID4 is an all around masterpiece. His excellent and patriotic themes are very powerful. While he is better known for his James bond scores, Arnold's first successful score deals with annihilation, death, destruction and finally worldwide victory. This is among the best scores written in 1990's. Although outmatched by scores such as Lord of the Rings etc, Arnold's ID4 score still great and highly recommended.

First off I hate country music, but Carrie Underwood is the only exception.Another reviewer said "The next best voice of perfection" and they were right. She has got the sweetest voice and we all know she really can sing naturally and without the help of computers.She sings two songs: "Inside Your Heaven/Independence Day"

"Inside Your Heaven" is her single from American Idol.
Im not sure exactly what the song means but it is beautiful.

"Independence Day" is the song she sang at her audtions and during the show.This is a touching song, it deals with domestic Violence or abuse, but you really have to listen to the words,for those of you who haven't gotten the chance to here the song it is not dark and deppresing, actually it's quite lovely.

I strongly encourage everyone to buy her first album
"Some Hearts".You will get your moneys worth.

Disappointing.......2006-08-19

I like the music, but the sound quality is terrible. I bought this CD because it was released in 2003, but there is ZERO improvement in sound quality from previous older tracks.

Enough with the damn compilations!.......2005-06-11

First of all I like Vangelis very much. However I have had it with the way that his music is being released. We are consistently given compilation releases (usually of the same tracks that are on other releases). WHAT IS THE POINT????!!
All the more frustrating is that Vangelis has a ton of unreleased music that many fans like myself have been after for years. Sorry the bootlegs on Ebay just don't cut it.
Where's an official release of "Cavafy", "The Bounty", "Francesco", and "Bitter Moon". Where is all the still unreleased music from "1492", "Blade Runner", "Antarctica" and "Chariots of fire", yes he released soundtracks for these films but they were sadly lacking.
Unfortunately we will probably have to wait for Vangelis to demise before we ever get these tracks, if even then.

worth buying, has seven good Vangelis songs.......2005-05-25

Some may complain that this is not a definitive Vangelis CD. Nope, it is far from being that, but it has seven good songs on it that make it worth purchasing for less than $20. Those seven good songs are: Hymne, Alpha, Chariots of Fire, Missing, Pulsar, Petite Fille de la Mer, and L'enfant. Of course, those are just my personal favorites.

Excellent Overview of Vangelis' Best Known Songs.......2004-06-10

It's hard to keep track of the number of compilations of Vangelis. Off the top of my head, I can think of "The Best of", "Greatest Hits", "Themes", "Portraits", and "Reprise". But they never got it right, something was always off, or one period or another of his career was not covered. Now comes "Oddisey: The Definitive Collection". While it may be pushing your luck to proclaim anything as a Vangelis "definitive" compilation", given his prolific output over the years, I am here nevertheless to tell you that this compilation is as good as it will get.

"Oddisey: The Definitive Collection" (18 tracks, 78 min.) in my opinion truly does compile all of Vangelis' best know tracks and greatest hits. Most of the tracks on here will sound immediately familiar, many because they are movie themes (Chariots of Fire being the most famous of course, but also The Missing, Blade Runner, thankfully containing both the beginning and end titles, Mutiny on the Bounty, and others), and other that became well known in commercials (Hymne, L'Enfant, among others). There can be no denying the creativity and talents of Vangelis. There are 2 bonus tracks, "I'll Find My Way Home" and "State of Independence", the 2 best known tracks of Jon & Vangelis, a nice touch to the album.

I share my frustration with other reviewers here that there is tons of great Vangelis music out there that remains unreleased. To be sure, Vangelis deserves a box-treatment of rare and unreleased tracks. But if you are looking for a single-disk overview of his best known songs, look no further: "Oddisey" is it. Released in Fall, 2003, it is a nice way to commemorate Vangelis turning 60 (say it ain't so!).

Good overall.......2005-07-20

Technically a very clean album. It has a good selection of tunes, particularly for the history buff, however some of the polished choral pieces sound funny when you think that most of them are essentially folk tunes that should be sung with a somewhat less practiced air. Overall, worth the purchase for historical value and good production.

Great Music from the Birth of Our Nation.......2002-02-02

A great collection of music from 18th century America.

If you enjoy fifes and drums, choral compositions, patriotic songs, and uplifting music from the birth of America, please get this CD.

A perfect selection for a patriotic American to play, especially on the 4th of July.

Protest Songs of the 1770s.......2002-01-24

The music that was composed and performed during the American Revolution is presented on this 1 hour CD. Since I was a child, I've enjoyed hearing the drum and fife corps on the Fourth of July and during the Presidential inaugurations, and this CD has several good drum and fife marches. Other selections are 18th century protest songs about taxation ("A taxing we will go...} and British tyranny. There are also some good harpsichord numbers contained on this CD. The musicians are excellent and the sound is clear. I don't know how many common people got to hear music like this during the Revolution, but at least this CD gives the 21st Century listener the opportunity enjoy the "popular" music of 200 years ago. Classical music lovers will enjoy this CD too.

Important work of musical heritage.......1999-02-25

I fell in love with this CD from the first track.The music of the American Fife Ensamble is stirring, I felt positivly rebelious. The satarical songs based on the tunes "British Grenadires" and "Hearts of Oak" are like the paintings of W. Hogarth set to music. You should have more than a cursory knowledge of the 18th century though, to fully enjoy this CD

A good source of enjoyment and education.......1999-02-23

We will never know exactly how these songs sounded when the citizens of Boston were darting black looks to the British regulars on the streets, but I would wager quite a bit that these renditions come pretty close. Of course the "American" accents are an anachronism; but most listeners might be puzzled to hear British accents used for these anti-British songs (with one exception, composed by a British regular!)I have already used selections from this CD to a groups of 3rd and 5th graders and they loved it. So teachers, take note, but be sure they have the words in front of them. A very valuable educational tool that also happens to be a very enjoyable program to hear for its own sake. And as with most New World releases, the annotations alone are worth the price of the product.

The penultimate collection ..........2006-12-07

Generally I agree with Strategos in his ecstatic Spotlight Review above. It is a joy to here some of the most memorable themes and cues from some of the most memorable science fiction and fantasy movies (re)recorded in great sound and in lavish (re)orchestrations, played by renowned classical orchestras, namely the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, no less.

I have always had a weak spot for (good, or maybe even intelligent) science fiction/fantasy and film music, especially its way of evoking mystery, grandure and wide open spaces. Call it a weakness if you want. But it was maybe really kick started off, for as far as I can remember, with Star Trek. But especially Star Trek II, III and IV - essentially a trilogy - because of their very romantic but very warm, human core, set on the broadest canvasses of unlimited and mysterious outer space. But then there was the music for adding that essential extra dimension of emotion and atmosphere. I am happy that much of the music on this album is from the Star Trek series and films, often equaling or sometimes even outclassing the original recordings.

This kind of music (for the movies) should be seen as an art on its own rights with its own merits and qualities. As such, the musical sequences on these CD's are a beautifully played cross section of some of the most evoking orchestral music for science fiction/fantasy film ever created. And I very much like the nicely blended, wide and deep orchestral soundpicture with enough reverberation to evoke a sense of wide open spaces.
I am quite thrilled by tracks like the evocative music from Dune, truly transporting one to the vastly sands of Arrakis (the music is wonderful, but to my great regret I think the movie itself is a flawed masterpiece at best, alas.). And then there is the very different, goofy music for Ghostbusters (memories of childhood), the spoofy but electrifying music from Mars Attacks (lovingly parodist music, this, with not a little touch of irony) and the happily adventurous, forward driving Theme from Galaxy Quest ('Never give up, never surrender!'), now also used for the internet-based fan-series Star Trek: The Hidden Frontier. On the other side of the spectrum we have the atmospheric music for Enemy Mine (an underestimated 'little' movie), the Theme from The Right Stuff (actually science FACT, not fiction, this film, just like Apollo 13, of course), the eerily attractive music for Species, the original End Title for Alien (not used in the theatrical version of the movie, where it was replaced by music from howard Hanson's Second Symphony), the exquisitely exotic music for Stargate, the sweet and warmly sympathetic, beautifully re-orchestrated, theme for Starman, the title cue for Star Trek: TOS (much more melodiously played than the original! If only a series nowadays could continue to be as thought provoking and as original as Star Trek was during its launch, fourty years ago ...) and a truly overpowering End Titles Suite from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. I especially like the thrillingly grandiloquent rendition here of the music for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. And how nice it is to hear the (thematic) similarities between James Horner's music for The Wrath of Khan, his great break-through as a film music composer, and his (two years) earlier music for Battle Beyond the Stars (which did indeed help him earn the job for writing the music for Star Trek II) ...

But on the 'down side', if one is looking for - for example - the gorgeously expansively played End Titles from Cocoon, it is not included here: one has to acquire the album that 'kicked it all off', so to say, namely 'Space and Beyond', also on Silva Screen. I was very pleased also with the inclusion on that album of some of the music from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation, namely where one of the characters, Tasha Yar, in one of the episodes (Skin of Evil) is saying goodbye to her crewmmates: sweetly sentimental and simple music which I have always wanted to own on CD. I guess that a few cues from the other two sequals ('Alien Invasion: Space and Beyond II' and 'Space3: Beyond the Final Frontier') didn't make it onto this 4 CD collection-album as well, but I guess that it would be the 'better part of the bargain' to opt to buy this 'The Science Fiction Album' instead of buying all three albums separately. Well, of course it is for yourself to ultimately decide what you really want ;-)

If I were to nitpick (which is not easy with such a marvellous project as this one), then I would say that while all music is performed with magnificent grandure and with style, some of it is not performed as crisply and as technically 'on the spot' as some of the original recordings: ensemble is a little slack and the playing somewhat stilted sometimes, losing some of the edge and the originality of the writing. ET and Star Wars spring to mind, but then the soundtracks for Star Wars are traditionally recorded with the magnificent London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by maestro John Williams himself, and these superior recordings (especially the ones for Episode I, II and III) can't really be bettered, IMHO. Likewise for the music from Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I believe that in the end one really has to resort to the ultimate reference, namely the original recording (which is true in many other instances of 'original recordings'), and then the 20th anniversay colector's edition of this soundtrack on Columbia/Legacy (truly unmissable, this veritable classic of sci-fi/film music soundtracks!).

But all in all this 4CD-collection amounts to probably being the penultimate high quality sci-fi music album collection (I certainly know of no other project that comes as close quality as well as quantity wise), with some of the most memorable musical moments from classic to modern sci-fi/fantasy film captured in lavish orchestrations.
Collection-wise: five *stars*. Playing: generally four *stars*, sometimes more. The recording quality: five *stars*. The music (qualified on its own merits as film music) and its (re)orchestrations: generally five *stars*. In the end this is all highly recommended, and certainly not to be missed by science fiction and fantasy film music fans. Klaatu barada nikto.

You wonderful four disk collection of SF music. It startsa up the the grand master of SF music, 2001: A space Odyssey all the way to Superman. This is all American SF music and several themes I would have liked to have included are not there. All in all though, a collection you will enjoy.

The Ulllllltimate Sci-Fi Music Collection.......2005-10-23

If one person gives great gifts, it's the illustrious Codemaster Talon. I've received a fair number of gifts in my lifetime, but so far, my older sister's take the cake. Take this one for instance. I'm real big on orchestral music, to the point where I listen to them more than any other kind of music. I've got orchestral versions of video game themes, orchestral soundtracks to truck-loads of anime shows (Big O, Escaflowne, and Giant Robo are incredible), and could probably spend the rest of my life just trying to study the nuances of all the classical music I've got. Being such a huge fan of orchestral music, I also have come to believe that orchestra music produced for movies and television is the new classical music (or as someone once said, Mozart would be making music for movies if he were alive today). Being a huge sci-fi fan, that kind of music has always been particularly near and dear to my heart. But were I to buy each and every soundtrack for every sci-fi I liked it would cost quite a bundle, and would include a lot of sub-par music along with the grandiose and fantastic main and memorable themes. That's where this beauty comes in.

The moment I ripped off the shrink-wrap and popped it into my cd player was a moment of great trepidation. Believe me when I tell that I've seen my fair share of sub-par orchestral recording in my lifetime. Very often they are in those big super-packs of music, and suffer from poor direction, improper mastering, and sometime even pathetic orchestration (or worse yet have something sounding like a cheap synthesizer and a kazoo in place of a full orchestra). I needn't have worried though. This sucker is fantastic.

Many people who are not audiophiles will probably miss the point of this cd collection. It is not the original versions of the pieces. It is re-orchestrations, mostly by the phenomenal Prague Symphony Orchestra. Many of these themes didn't sound all that hot in there original versions because they were low budget films or were not recorded in high-fidelity. Here they are given the full treatment, mastered with the most loving care imaginable. Often the version found in these cds is SUPERIOR to the original.

Remember the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey? Of course you do. But how many times have you heard a cheap imitation of the original version from the movie, starting too low in volume and ending too high (and missing the essential pipe-organ that gives it that extra oomph)? Well, this first track in the entire collection is not only everything it should be instrumental and timing-wise, but it also has been oh-so-carefully adjusted during the mastering process so that at no time is the music either too low or too high in volume (surely a benchmark for every other recording ever to be made of the piece).

Or what about the theme from the (at-the-time) uber-creepy The Black Hole? The orchestration of this piece of music goes from tiumphant to terrifying and back again, with a splendor and cleanness that I CERTAINLY don't remember being in the original recording.

Then there's the new version of the theme from Independence Day, complete with a violin solo, a far more electrifying ending climax, and a chorus so thunderous that you feel like applauding at the end. Simply indescribable. Kind of like the MIND-BLOWING rendition of the theme from The Last Star Fighter. This has been one of my favorite themes for a long time now, but I've never heard it played like this. I think the original version of the theme is something like 1 minute long, but this new version doesn't just fade out (HAHAHAHA!!!!) THIS version is THREE minutes long, goes through the main theme THREE times, with the final strains being so triumphant and joyous I could not help but feel an electrifying charge the first dozen or so times (come to think of it, I still feel that way). This is superior to the original in EVERY way. AWESOME.

And let's not forget the incredible new rendition of Stargate with it's heavy use of clarinets (for Egyptian effect!) and a triumphant new ending (completely lacking the chanting from the original version. This version is so different that for the first minute it is very hard to tell that it is in fact Stargate. But then the main theme kicks in, and then you get this incredible flute solo for my favorite part of theme (the whole thing is played slower, but arguably more powerfully than the original). My goodness. At first I found the thing so different I didn't like it. But then I listened to it again. And again. And again.

I could go on and on, talking about the fantastic new rendition of Moon Raker, the ear-popping Battlestar Galactica, the classic Star Trek (First Contact has a minute or two of the theme from Star Trek:The Motion Picture before going into the main theme), or the sweet renditions of music from the Star Wars movies (or the music from E.T.).

I have to mention though that this collection was not picked based merely on what people want, or on what is popular. No, the people who made it obviously thought a GOOD music collection was better than a popular one. That's why you get a heartbreakingly beautiful theme from A.I. instead of the main theme. It's why you get music from movies that you probably never gave a second thought to the music (because the movie was lousy). It's why you get Armageddon, Judge Dredd, and Robocop (who would have guessed their music was so COOL when there was all that crazy action and bad-acting going on on-screen).

I said it before and I'll say it again. This cd-set was mastered with tender-loving-care, and it shows BIG-TIME. High-fidelity the likes of which I have not seen since the days when cds were brand-new in the world. Dolby Surround. Perfectly balanced. BEAUTIUFL orchestrations. About the only thing that makes me scratch my head is the weird sound-effect tracks (Oooookay.....). Other than that, it's PERFECT. Obviously they could not include every sci-fi theme ever (no one can), but this collection is REALLY GOOD. A lot of great themes that got away (forgotten gems :), new versions of old favorites, and under-appreciated classics aplenty, but ALWAYS the full and complete versions with nothing cut-out (the theme from Dune is quite extended).

If you love movie music (and sci-fi movie music in particular) you MUST buy this awesome collection). It is not the original recordings. Almost always the new ones are better (if they aren't better they're just equal). This is what you have been waiting for. I for one am going to be buying quite a few cds from this company in the future. Give your ears the treat they deserve. Buy it NOW.

SciFi Album gift.......2005-07-20

I bought the Science Fiction Album as a gift for my son who is twenty-one years old. He is a musician, and also a huge fan of many SciFi shows and movies. I thought this would be the perfect thing for him and I was right. He loves it!

Away From to be a Collectible Peace.......2004-12-16

If you like Sci-Fi movies and want a compilation of their important scores, this is the CD-set to buy. But let me warn you about that very few songs in the cds are from the original soundtracks. Most of them is re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. But the sound quality of cds are very good, because they have HDCD and Dolby Surround labels. This set is away from to be a collectible peace, but it is a good general compilation of favorite Sci-Fi movie scores.

FOSTERCHILD RAWKS.......2007-06-27

FOSTERCHILD's newest (originally heard on their myspace page)
is even better than their first.

The drummer, originally from the band 'Fuel', seems to have found some new boys to play with that rock just as much.

I would like to say that I saw them, but I actually only heard them last year (2006) at the Sterling Hotel in Allentown PA. The place was too packed to actually get into the 'seeing' part of the venue, so I just listened.

Personally, I think their new stuff is reminiscent of the 2nd Audioslave release, in the effect that I felt that I was back listening to Bad Company and Led Zep influences with Audioslave. (Even Paul Simon which was kinda freaky). When I heard the newest FOSTERCHILD, I closed my eyes and thought I sensed it eeked a bit of Beatles and a bit of some of the better 80ies hair bands (as they are now termed). Anyway...I think it's obvious FOSTERCHILD has been influenced by several genres of musical styles. Who knows if that influence is anything like what I heard.

That's what I like. It seems most people end up listening, in their older years, to the music that they grew up with. Makes me wonder what the kids today will listen to in their 40ies and 50ies. (kinda scarey to think about)

Unfortunately, (for the mass market) they (FOSTERCHILD) seems to be quite content laying low in the surrounding Lehigh Valley Area and as my now deceased brother-in-law would say, being a 'bar band'. hehehe. I know better. You gotta start somewhere and it's lucky that so much good music in the past century has come from this part of PA, including +LIVE+ and Fuel. I guess it's good that when one great group of musicians break apart for whatever reason, they end up forming two really great yet separate entitys to listen to. It all started with Days of the New...loving them....then kapow....we had Tantric. Same great quality, yet so much more to listen to.

My pic is from the night at the Sterling, and I do believe I also saw them somewhere else, just can't think right now. I'm a little disappointed that they are not still selling the Tank T shirt I bought that night cause I know one of these days I'm gonna be doing a clorox load (of laundry) and splash it. It's my favorite T, although very Harley-ish, it's extremely comfortable and long. (I guess the corporate world will get ya somehow...in terms of record labels, designs, writing songs, merchandising, yatta yatta) So, pick this up while their still in their new and raw stage.

On another note, their look is rather 'rough' on promotional stuff I have seen lately, but when I talked to them after their show that night, they really were very nice, down to earth (? did I just say that).....uhm....ok.....good folks to talk to is what I meant. LOL.

So....give a listen if you like any of the other music I mentioned. Or go to their space on that space site.

And another note.....friends of mine are doing an Independent Film and when talking to my friend that's involved in that he mentioned FOSTERCHILD might be doing one of their songs in it. I hope that gels. I love that. I remember when that sort of commercialism was frowned upon in the rock arena. Yet, it tickles me when I'm sitting around watching a stupid Chick Flik (Love & Sex) and +Live+ starts playing, or I see a commercial for Special K cereal and Collective Soul is playing that they too are feeling better now. (Especially because Dean Roland is wearing the jewelry I designed in their HOME video....done in Altanta, Ga with the Atlanta YOUTH Symphony Orchestra.)

I need originality to be inspired.......2006-06-18

I think it's great that this woman stands so strongly behind her convictions and she is clearly a very talented poet. I just wonder why talented artists who clearly have an abundance of creativity cannot find their own voices and instead insist upon copying Ani Difranco's style. This makes the album painful for me to listen to. Clearly, Alix is an amazing poet. However, hearing her recite them is like listening to someone trying to mimick Ani Difranco. She is great at sounding like her. I honestly could not tell the difference. Sorry, but I think thats kind of lame. I can't listen to Alix. I think she is extremely talented...yet this whole business of stealing Ani's style... I can't stand it. It happens to often and it is just..kind of lame. What happened to originality? If I want Ani, I'll listen to her. Otherwise I'd just like to read Alix's poems.

Not so subtle sister.......2004-12-28

I've had the pleasure of hearing Alix perform several times. In addition, I've had a chance to talk with her. This woman stands fully behind what she says. There's no glamour or glitz; what you see and hear is what you get. She truly lives to speak about what she experiences and to empower women. This album is incredibly raw and overflowing with the truth of what is going on in this world. It also runs the gamut of political commentary (like the title track "Independence Meal") and personal reflection ("8 x 10"). Alix's voice is an instrument, rocking the listener with her own syncopated rhythm. Seeing her perform is the only thing better than listening to this album!

More than Just Ani Difranco.......2004-09-03

It's easy to say that Alix is just copying Ani Difranco, especially if you're a huge Difranco fan. But, let's be honest, folks, I really think that Alix is unique and very, very clever. Her poetry is more than just words, it's what all writers grasp for... a voice. She can make us all look back and wonder what life is really like. She has a tour coming up and I highly recommend you check out her web page for details. I won't miss it for the world.

thr originality of passion.......2004-06-03

I give her credit where it needs to be, but honestly folks, if I didn't know any better I would say that Ani Difranco had a new album. Alix uses the same patterns, phrasing, and vocal techniques as Ani- and to such a large extent that it sounds just like her!! When playing the album, I've had others ask me when did Ani release this new record. Originality Alix, please.

Another wake-up call from Alix.......2004-02-28

To say this woman has a way with words is a serious understatement. She can not only make you feel what she is saying, she can take you there, put you right in the middle of it. This is not happy little songs to get you through your life, this is the truth,with nothing held back. Alix is nothing less than extraordinary.
