happy music.......2006-08-29

I could't offer a technical critique of this c.d,instead I'll attempt to describe the enjoyment it gave me.Imagine you're sitting in your car listening to the radio,not terribly enthusiastic about getting out to start work.You become aware there's a bright ,cheerful sounding tune being played-vaguely familiar,I find myself tapping out the beat and humming along-what's this called then?Then we get to the part I can identify-DAH-DAHdeDAHdeDAH-DAH-DAH-Oh,of course,it's the music they used in "The Hunters",oh the memories that brought back.That tune got me out of the car ,through the day's turmoil,and when I woke up the next morning at 3a.m.,it was still going throgh my head!Okay,log onto Amazon,click,click,all I've gotta do now is contain my impatience .The C.D. duly arrived,suffice it to say it exceeded all my expectations regarding quality and content and has become one of my favourites.

Vintage march collection for connoisseurs.......2000-05-26

It seems like the heyday for recorded march collections was the early stereo era. The classic Mercury recordings by Fennell and the Eastman Wind Ensemble dating from that time no doubt contribute to that impression. In this collection, they demonstrate the seriousness with which they approach this repertoire by unearthing some lesser known (at least in the US) pieces to go along with the usual Sousa-esque fare. However, there is no sense that they scraped the bottom of the barrel: all of these marches are first rate. Even the less familiar marches will have you humming along in no time, so infectious are they. These performers bring their usual gutsy exuberance and the necessary polish, too. The sound is on the bold side so turn the volume down a bit for this one.

Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06

I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

The Curse....That mainstream 'punk' and 'trendy hipster rock' lose their hold on you, and you don't even fit in with that type of "talk about the weather" anymore.

The Curse that you start thinking about things that could only upset your current 'applecart' and make you more of an outcast, than you already are :-) haha.

This record took me 5 listens to make it my Favorite Mekons Record. I must say, the Mekons have become my favorite band, through much listening and digestion.

Mekons Rock n Roll was my favorite, but with this album, every song is strong and unique and the last 3 closers, tracks 10,11,12 are the best cuts on the album, for 3 totally different reasons, in my opinion of course.

After that, tracks 13-16 are the Fun '90 Album, Mekons Dance tunes. Fun to listen to in the car, I like the closing track, #16, the best of the 4 tracks.

When I think real punk music, I think Mekons. I love Mekons!!!!!!!!!

The Mekons again display their amazing talent. "Wild and Blue" is amazing.

On 1989ýs ýRock ýN Rollý the Mekons were bearing the germ of rock n' roll through the Berlin Wall, but by 1991 the East Bloc had collapsed and leaving our heroes to stew in the detritus of a post-Cold War ideological wake of magic, fear, and superstition, numbing themselves with themselves with narcotics and whatever else the boffins could synthesize, reaching backwards to country, forward to an imagined apocalypse, and preserving in memory the whole long dull story of corruption while the victors queued to dance on socialismýs grave. Being on the losing end never sounded so good.

Bizarre and brilliant.......2002-07-23

The Mekons tell it like it is. The bleak message of Curse of the Mekons is not the snide cynicism of so much of the "alternative" music of recent years. Rather, it's a ringing condemnation of the erosion of human values as the capitalist and technological machine of modern life marches onwards. The Mekons must have tapped a very raw nerve indeed to make this record. I think the mood is summarized best on "Sorcerer": "miraculous and magical / his world is also demonic / terrifying, swinging / wildly out of control".

Musically, this is one of their best efforts. "Wild and Blue" is beautiful and poignant. "Secrets" and "Nocturne" are dark and enigmatic. "Lyric" is incredibly anguished. "100% Song" is irreverant and witty. Strains of country and folk are much in evidence.

This edition also contains the EP "Fun '90": although almost impossible to categorize, it somehow makes a fitting companion to Curse.

Here, the band slows the tempo while losing none of their hard-won cynicism about the music business. Gems abound: the accordion/guitar driven "The Curse," Sally Timms' galactic cowgirl turns on "Wild & Blue," the lovely sneer called "Brutal." If you don't know them, please turn in your credentials as a hipster and enjoy your Dave Matthews CDs. Comes with the fun "Fun '90" EP, complete with weird vocal by Lester Bangs and heartfelt Band cover.

The performances contained herein are very good. I only wish there were more Sousa marches in the collection. However, those that are there are well-performed and the recording is very good.
