Luciano Pavrotti: The Best (Farewell Tour).......2007-06-27
Wonderful Pavarotti sings the best of the best. His voice never ceases to amaze me. Listening pleasure at it's finest.
Luciano Pavorotti.......2007-02-17
All the songs are wonderful, can never become tired of listening to his songs. Excellent.
Luciano is the best!.......2007-01-20
I can't speak more highly of this collection of Pavrotti's songs. I keep this two CD pack in my car so I can enjoy it on my way to and from work. Even after I have arrived, I find myself sitting in my car waiting for a song to end. Walking out on a song seems sacriligious. While I grew up listening to Caruso and Lanza, there is no question that Pavrotti is the Master! Although, I do have to admit Pavrotti has the greater advantage of modern recording technology to better present his talent than Caruso and Lanza had. However, Lanza definitely didn't have the power that Pavrotti has. With Caruso, we will never know... I highly recommend this collection of Pavrotti's, if you are a Pavrotti fan. If you aren't, buy it anyway and become one:)

Customer Reviews:
Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29
During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.
The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.
If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

This is an album of songs from Guernsey, an island off Cornwall but much closer to Normandy, and the music is as odd and captivating as the particular brand of French in which it is sung. The music, even to a not-particularly-sophisticated ear, seems a combination of Celtic twang and French charm, with unexpected springs of rhythm amidst melodies that are as graceful as swans. One might call it folk music and I guess that's correct, but with the use of baroque guitars, shawms, cornetto and, of course, the medieval harp--the instrument of Andrew Lawrence-King (who put the program together and is from Guernsey)--among others, the "classical" side of this project is just as crucial: it's a perfect union. Some of the texts are ribald, most tell stories. Paul Hillier's fine baritone occasionally comes close to a type of Sprechstimme, but it seems just right for these ballads, some ancient, some not-so. Soprano Clara Sanabras is from Normandy, and her seemingly untrained sound and approach are, by turns, earthy and tender enough for this music as well; she also plays guitar. The other players are superb: just give a listen to the hurdy-gurdy ("chifournie," in French, and also played by Lawrence-King). Victor Hugo lived on Guernsey for a while, and the CD's title comes from one of his novels. This music is presented with no affectations; as unusual as it is, the listener feels instantly at home with the wondrous sounds. Not just for early music fans, this is a piece of musical tourism. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Timeless Beauty.......2005-08-18
We ordered this CD after hearing excerpts from it on NPR. We find it an enchanting blend of vocal and instrumental music, part medieval, part Celtic folk. Listening to it envelopes us in the beauty and simplicity of an unspoiled natural landscape timeless in its spiritual purity. It's an antidote to the ego-obsessed ratrace of the present and reminds us of the essential human goodness that music can express.

Customer Reviews:
Superb Early Music. Buy It........2005-12-13
'The Art of Courtly Love' is a two CD set, condensed from a three LP album performed by The Early Music Consort of London. I know less than I would like about early music, considering how much I enjoy it, but one very important thing I do know is that the director of this recording, David Munrow was, until his untimely death, the big man in early music.
One of the many things I especially like about this collection is that by showcasing a lot of vocal music, the tinny quality of a lot of early music is moved to the background. Antother thing I like is the fact that one can plainly distinguish secular from liturgical music by listening carefully to these selections. The biggest differences I see are the appearance of percussion instruments and male / female duets.
One reviewer commented on the quality of the notes. I agree they are good, but only about average for an old music offering by a major label.
Highly recommended to all who like early music.
A Fiver from one of the Archangels of early music performance.......2005-06-26
I bought this when the album was first released. Even though scholarship has advanced, and it can be argued that Munrow's interpretations are dated, what has been lost over the years is the joy in performing this music. Many modern performances are ponderous and much, much too serious. But David Munrow found this music as a wonderous discovery. Through albums such as this one, he released into the open air music that had been locked away, languishing in the libraries for years, trotted out occasionally for a scholarly study, and then tucked back on the shelves. Munrow's enthusiasm for this music is evident in this collection, and his performances make them walk - no, dance - in the open air once more. This album is beautifully performed. I hope the notes in the CD are as good as the ones in my original release.
In 1974, I had the great pleasure of meeting David Munrow and the other members of the Early Music Consort, and was blown away with that enthusiasm and unselfishness, their willingness to discuss their work - I remember Munrow trading recorder performance tips with a friend of mine - and Munrow's truly amazing store of energy. This 2-CD boxed set is the digital version of a 3-LP box from 1973 and was reissued in 1996 as part of the edition with which EMI/Virgin celebrated the twentieth anniversary of David Munrow’s unfortunate demise. The recordings, made at London’s prestigious Abbey Road studios, are digitally remastered to a very high standard, so that I found myself enjoying them via headphones more than via loudspeakers, something which is pretty unusual with CDs from the old analogue days. The two discs contains no less than some 156 minutes (51 tracks) of absolutely fascinating music. The first part is devoted to Guillaume Machault’s songs, works which can be dated around 1350 to 1360. The second part of the programme is concerned with the so-called avantgarde from Avignon (including names such as Matteo da Perugia), composers who wrote for esoteric circles around 1380 to 1410. And the third part (the third LP of the original) is devoted to fifteenth-century music from the court of Burgundy, the two great composers here being Dufay and Binchois.
Of course, David Munrow’s performances, fascinating and rivetingly interesting as they are, were shaped by his own interests and research at the time, and the booklet notes point out that since then “scholarship and performance practices have moved on healthily”, which I interpret to mean that today nobody would dream of performing this music the way Munrow did: for instance, he has most of the songs accompanied by a whole plethora of ancient instruments, although today it is generally agreed that works from this period should be sung unaccompanied or with minimal instrumental support. Munrow also performs some of the songs as purely instrumental pieces, a legitimate decision perhaps. Munrow also uses the two countertenors James Bowman and Charles Brett for many of the songs, and not everyone will appreciate being bombarded with their somewhat forced androgynous falsetto for nearly three hours; personally, it was the singing of Martyn Hill, tenor, and Geoffrey Shaw, baritone, which delighted my ear during these sessions. Along with the instruments, of course: slide trumpet, cornett, shawm, crwth, fiddle, rebec, citole and so on, plus several tracks with the amazing Christopher Hogwood playing an organ that sounds, at least, very old – unfortunately, the otherwise good liner notes give no details concerning the instruments used.
The Old French texts are printed in full with English translations, so it is possible to follow every nuance. Exceptionally good value for money! – For more historically-informed performances of music of this kind, I suggest searching names such as Gothic Voices, Hilliard Ensemble or Binchois Consort.
If 6 were available, this would get them!.......2002-02-16
Lovely, beautiful, amazing, charming, and vital. I'll not replicate the previous reviewer, though my favorites differ from his, but I bought this on LP 25 years ago and it changed my life. These are exhilarating performances, that move you effortlessly through time and space into a world both far away and very, very close. So much great music, wonderfully performed. Take a chance--it might change your life as well!
One of the finest early music performances ever recorded.......2001-09-03
And an intriguing work of scholarship besides. This was originally released back in the early 1970's by the late David Munrow as a three album box set.
The first part of this recording is basically dedicated to Machaut and his contemporaries. The chanson -Amours me fait desirer- remains striking to this day, with its unusual leap in its first measures. -Amis tout dous- is a lovely miniature, and so also is the monophonic -Quant je sui mis au retour-. But the high point of this part of the record is -Quant j'ay l'espart-, a duet between countertenor and bass cornetto (a serpent?), understated and heartbreaking.
The second part is weirdness from the Avignon court of the Popes, the time when rhythmic notation got more sophisticated, and composers grew more experimental. The unusual chromaticism of -Fumeux fume- is given a great performance here. The -Tre fontane- estampie is given a reading here that is truly frenzied. -Plasanche, ou tost- is a lovely song. You also get rhythmic oddities like -Le greygnour bien-.
The third album nears Renaissance music, and focuses on Dufay and Binchois. Loud instruments like sackbuts and shawms are featured on pieces like -Donnes l'assault-, which seems risky, but sometimes works. The usually quiet pieces on the -La Spagna- ground are here given a marching-band performance on loud winds. The real high points here, though, are the motet -O tres piteulx-, Binchois absolutely gorgeous -Amoureux suy-, and the setting of Petrarch's -Vergine bella-.
This is a definitive early music performance that should never be allowed to go out of print. My only complaint with the CD edition is that it lacks some of the more extensive notes that came with the phonograph record booklet.

The Essential Set of Poulenc's Orchestral Works.......2005-06-08
Save for the Organ Concerto, the Aubade and the Piano Concerto, this 2-disc EMI CD set contains the major orchestral works of Francis Poulenc (1899-1963), all conducted by the composer's close associate Georges Pretre. To my taste, this is the indispensable collection of these works.
Pretre (1924- ) was an uneven, even erratic, conductor. Many of his opera recordings were marked by eccentric tempos (e.g., the complete "La Traviata" with Caballe on BMG). But Pretre's affinity for Poulenc's music is undeniable. This recording of the complete ballet "Les Biches" includes the rarely-heard choral numbers. The music contains brief references to works by other composers, such as Mozart's Haffner symphony, Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments, and Enescu's 1st Romanian Rhapsody. Pretre does an amazing job of making London's Philharmonia Orchestra sound like a French ensemble (likewise the superb Ambrosian Singers). The playing, especially by the brass, is absolutely first-rate. Pretre's interpretation lacks the inimitable rhythmic bite and sparkle of the classic mono recording of Roger Desormiere (the suite only on Testament), but then so does everybody else's. The more I listen to the few precious recordings that Desormiere made before his debilitating stroke in the early 1950's, the more I feel that he may well have been the finest of ALL French conductors.
The other performances here are with French ensembles. Pretre's reading of "Les Animaux Modeles" - a masterpiece if there ever was one - is the finest on disc. Several of the items here - especially the Sinfonietta (the closest Poulenc came to writing a symphony) - are very infrequently recorded, so having them all together in one set is a pleasure to hear. The "Concert Champetre" (Rustic Concerto) is exquisitely rendered by harpsichordist Aimee van de Wiele (it's much better played than by Poulenc himself on piano in a live recording available only in a 10-disc set from the NY Philharmonic).
This account of the Concerto for Two Pianos with the great Jacques Fevrier and the composer himself on keyboards is a bit slower than Pretre's stereo re-make with Tacchino & Ringweisen. That was probably a concession to Poulenc's piano technique. Both readings are wonderful - the later one is coupled with Tacchino in the Aubade and the Piano Concerto (see my review).
Other great Pretre recordings worth hearing are his Poulenc Gloria & Organ Concerto (the premier recordings, alas on a now out of print EMI CD), his extraoordinary account of "Le Loup" by Dutilleux (perhaps the finest of all postwar French ballets, coupled on EMI with the Les Biches Suite and Milhaud's "La Creation du Monde"), his superb complete Roussel "Bacchus et Ariane" (EMI), and three intriguing works by French composers based on stories by Edgar Allen Poe: Debussy's "La Chute de la Maison Usher," Caplet's "Le Masque de la mort rouge," and Schmitt's "Le Palais hante" (all on EMI 64687).
For Poulenc's major orchestral works, this Pretre set is simply required listening. C'est magnifique!

Melodies to miraculously cure the moribund!!!.......2005-09-10
This 2000 3-CD set is a new edition of 2-CD set from 1990 titled "Opérette-Passion" from EMI France. By popular request, this adds to the already mirific collection a third CD containing some of the real glories of mid-XXth century French operettas: Maurice Chevalier, Tino Rossi, Fernandel, Alibert, Denise Duval, Luis Mariano, Georges Guétary, Bourvil, Mathé Altéry, Anny Cordy, Gise Mey and Armand Mestral. The selection is not exhaustive - that would be impossible* - but it does give any listener a major incentive to go ferretting for more of the same and the complete score of some of those genuine masterpieces of charm, humour and melody by Fancis Lopez or Maurice Yvain (among many others). For students of the French language and French opera, this collection is priceless as it gives a very good impression of what makes the French singing voice different from any other: something called "le phrasé", which unfortunately cannot be duplicated or improvised by international stars who simply dabble in French (except maybe the multi-talented Petula Clark). The recordings range from a restored antique of the 20's by Chevalier to full stereo scores from the 70's. The result is a package whose value will never be duplicated in discriminating choice, sound quality and sheer listening enjoyment. One very minor reservation : The dates of the recordings are not indicated as they were in the "Opérette-Passion" collection and the names of the lyricists are not given. The liner notes are composed of a 2-page essay which gives a general outlook of the evolution of French operetta (in French) but could have been a little longer, in my humble opinion. Details like this would have made the difference between a wonderful album for connoisseurs and a genuinely educational tool. * The operettas of Vincent Scotto are not represented. WARNING: These recordings are genuine treasures and are never available for long either individually of collectively, so buying this collection is an absolute no-brainer.
FROM OFFENBACH TO LOPEZ.......2002-08-16
Yesterday ,before going to sleep, you told your wife:I have nothing against FRENCH operettas, but what i want to hear is the songs ,not the dialogue that goes with the genre when you listen to complete works. Here in that collection, all the composers who created that particular form of light music are represented. It is so much more entertaining than traditional opera.Among the highlights are songs from OFFENBACH's works like LA BELLE HÉLENE and LA PÉRICHOLE;MESSENGER's VERONIQUE and MONSIEUR BEAUCAIRE;the famous LA VEUVE JOYEUSE that was successfull around the world;CHRISTINÉ's PHI PHI created the day after armistice in 1918.One of the pleasant surprize for me was hearing songs from LES MOUSQUETAIRES AU COUVENT and one from LA FILLE DE MADAME ANGOT (JADIS,LES ROIS)and another from CIBOULETTE(NOUS AVONS FAIT UN BEAU VOYAGE).MADY MESPLÉ,one of the best singers of the genre is featured on seven songs, and she is always a joy to hear in any role of the repertoire.FRANCIS LOPEZ, who is remembered as the last important composer is well honoured with eight selections with singers like BOURVIL,GEORGES GUÉTARY and LUIS MARIANO.Don't try to resist THE MERRY WIDOW ,she'll get to you one way or another.

Best and cheapest of Koechlin chamber music........2000-12-12
At less than half the price of most of the other Koechlin CDs available, this one is a bargain, but what is most remarkable is the variety of selections and instrumental combinations. The playing is uniformly good, as is production. Many of the pieces are not recorded elsewhere, and those that are, are often definitively performed. As owner of 16 recordings dedicated to the works of Koechlin, I can say that this is one of three best, the others being the "Trois Oeuveres", played by Jean-Pierre Ferey, and the lone collection of Koechlin's choral works, the name of which escapes me (it is available on Amazon). If you are interested in Koechlin's chamber music, browse quickly through the welter of chamber collections, then save some time and money and get this one.

UNIQUE MUSIC WORTH LISTENING TO.......2006-05-25
HIP HOP OUTSIDE THE MAINSTREAM
Spearhead, with Michael Franti, Home (5*)
Spearhead, with Michael Franti, Chocolate Supa Highway (4*)
Spearhead, with Michael Franti, Stay Human (3*)
MC Solaar, Prose Combat (5*)
MC Solaar, Le Tour de la Question (5*)
MC Solaar, Cinquieme As (Fifth Ace) (3*)
The best hip hop today is being done outside the mainstream, by Michael Franti in San Francisco and MC Solaar in France. (I'll make an exception for the music from Hustle and Flow!) I first heard Michael Franti and MNC Solaar on the compilation, Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool. Spearhead did "Home," the best song I've heard on living in the shadow of AIDS. MC Solaar collaborated with jazz bassist Ron Carter on "Un Ange en Danger."
Franti is a master lyricist; his group (groups, since he changes personnel on every record) lays down interesting and varied backgrounds. Above all, Spearhead plays real music: the melodies stick in your head, along with the lyrics, when you're done listening to them. Home is the best album: cuts like "Home," "Red Beans and Rice," "Caught without an Umbrella," and "Hole in the Bucket" tell mean and witty truths about being black and powerless in America. The killer track on Chocolate Supa Highway is "Lonesome Traveler": a plaintive woman voice sings the familiar folk tune with a gospel tinge and Franti raps along underneath. Stay Human is disappointing: the songs sound tired and the gimmick -short blasts from a radio broadcast are interspersed among the songs--doesn't work.
MC Solaar sings in French but is black -he's from north Africa. Surprisingly, French is a marvelous language to rap in -nasal, elisive, hypnotic in pulse over drum machine beat, synthesizer smears, vinyl scratching and background singers. The lyrics are funny at times, angry at others. Prose Combat is a studio album of uniformly high quality. Tour is a two-CD compilation from live concerts.
It's interesting to listen to differences in the live and studio performances of some of the songs on these two albums: in general, the live performances are pumped up a bit. There are so many exceptional songs on these two records that it's hard to pick favorites: listen to "Nouveau Western," "La Concubine de la Hemoglobine," "Onzieme Commandement," or "Gangster Moderne." Or "Zoom," the opening cut on Tour, with MC and his gang coming in over the sound of helicopters landing behind them. It kicks!
Cinquieme As finds MC back in the studio again. This time, the background is thinner and lyrics sound recycled. But, hey, two out of three ain't bad!
[If you like MC Solaar, try Les Nubians, Princesses Nubiennes, two young Noerth African French women, stunningly beautiful, who sound a bit like Sade if she had grown up on hip hop.]
Fantastic!.......2001-02-25
I love music, I listen to everything but I usually do not bother with rap. But MC Solaar is different. He is one of the few artists that I listen to, and every time I do, he impresses me more. His lyrics are intelligent and challenging. His message worth listening to. His compositions stay with you long after you have shut down your stereo. You will find them coming back to you as you move through the day. I really recommend his work, you can't go wrong picking up this album.
Great!.......2000-07-21
Finally a live album from the best French rapper ever. This album gives a new dimension to Mc Solaar's amazing songs. I wish that you could all understand his lyrics. This is a "must have". I highly recommend this CD, satisfaction guaranteed.
memories of montreal..........2000-06-16
I first heard MC Solaar during my summer rowing in Montreal. I wouldn't say I'm a hip-hop fan but MC Solaar was our crew's favorite CD during erg workouts and training. My French has faltered (understatement), but I had to dance when I heard this CD. "Zoom" is perfect for my funky workouts. Slower tracks work with single-malt and kicking-back.
MC Solaar is also brilliant live.......2000-03-03
The live versions on this album really differ from the studio albums. These versions are more funky and soulfull, while the studio versions are more rythmic. For fans of MC Solaar, this album is an absolute must, although it's not cheap. All the classics are on this, in exciting new versions.
