Product Description
This outstanding debut from 22 year old Texan Micah P Hinson is produced by fellow Texans the Earlies and sounds like a cross between Will Oldman/Johnny Cash/Lambchop and The Tindersticks with a splash of gospel thrown in. An often breathtaking record, it will undoubtedly feature in many critics best of year polls. Sketchbook/Spunk. 2004.

Album Description
Of all the comparisons his body of work has received, we have to recognise that those that choose Leonard Cohen (one of his idols, besides John Denver) are very right. His new EP A Dream of Her puts him closer to the legendary Canadian singer/songwriter. It occurs from different perspectives. One is the mystic effect of his songs. Micah has reinforced that effect with a little stylistic change. When it comes, a change is always interesting if it provokes an artistic progress. That's what happens here in two pieces, 'Me and You' and 'The Dissappearing', where the piano leads the pulse and takes the reins of the score, leaving the guitar - usually, the main instrument for P. Hinson - with a secondary role. This new landscape allows Micah's melancholic voice to show a humbler echo and sound more vulnerable in its search of his personal truth.

Album Description
At the age of 19, Micah met the widow of a notable rock star who was initially his muse, then his downfall. After forging prescriptions, he was sent to county jail, then found himself homeless and penniless. During this "lost" period, he penned these songs. His twisted, dark tales of love and loss are matched only by a cracked vocal and songwriting that belies his mere 22 years. Received glowing critical acclaim in the UK press where the record was released in 2004 on Sketchbook Records. For fans of Silver Jews, Bright Eyes, Mark Lanegan, and other gifted literate singer-songwriters. He walks the fine line of heart on your sleeve lyrics and raw emotion, but does so in a way that never goes too far without you feeling he really means it. Repeated listens will render you helpless over its charm.

A great young talent just getting started.......2007-06-26
On this Abileene Texas singer songwriter's debut full length, less is more. Hinsons haunting vcocals and beautiful guitar arrangements provide the perfect soundtrack to hangover induced hazy mornings. A solid follow-up to his debut ep (re-released by Jade Tree last fall), Micah P. Hinson and the Gospel of Progress is an exciting progression in the career of this highly talented performer. Check it out.
Loved it so much I 'bought' it twice!.......2006-11-03
OK, I stole this cd. I was briefly sharing an office with a music magazine and this cd was languishing at the bottom of a huge pile. No one seemed too interested in it. I liked the title, and the cover, so I 'borrowed' it.
First listen I wasn't sure, second I was interested, third I was hooked. Now, a year and a half later it is still a red-hot regular on my stereo. Don't worry Micah, I believe in supporting great artists, so I returned the cd to the music mag and told them to review it, then went out and bought my own copy. From the opening classic, 'Close Your Eyes', to the powerhouse of my favourite, 'Patience', this is one classy and brilliant album.
I have since found his first, and watched some clips of him online (he might sound old and weather-beaten but, surprisingly, he looks like a cross between Harry Potter and Jack Osbourne).
This is a fantastic album. Buy it and give it a few listens. it will stay with you forever.
Please tour Down Under Micah!!
Sober,Somber, Elegiac Songs.......2006-06-24
This collection of love-lost and the the anguished aftermath songs are hauntingly effective in conveying the soul wrenching and soul draining effect of a major relationship meltdown. Hinson's craggy voice is not an angel's but one of a guy who who has to-must let these songs out.The songs are basic but beautifully framed .The last track alone-The Day Texas Sank to the Bottom of the Sea- is worth the purchase. It's one of the most achingly beautiful, SADDEST songs, EVER.
Underwhelmingly Dismal.......2006-01-28
Years ago, A friend of mine used to refer to a certain Neil Young Track as "Music to slit your Wrists By". But we still liked Neil anyway!
Ever seen many people with unique names insist upon using their middle initial? Here you go... Almost as interesting as the hyphenated last name crowd, and some of them are much less self important.
Micah P. has upstaged Neil (what is Neil's middle initial anyway?) and brought new meaning to that phrase. This Disc brings new meaning to the slowing of a tempo, and has the potential for conjuring wicked nasty storminess on a perfectly sunny day. If we could play this CD at 16 rpm, it would sound at least humorous, I'd be tempted to play it at 78 rpm just to have it over with!
I feel that my Washing Machine has more rhythm and swing than Micah, and to be honest, I would rather have a real low down case of the blues, than to feel like this guy does. The only thing worse that a disc that sounds like the soundtrack to a bad horror movie is when the guy, who is clearly not a singer, or a rhymer, can't hit the notes... But surprisingly the notes are within the guy's talking voice range, cracks and all... Go Figure. Could this be Elmer J Fudd's singing Voice? I wonder...
The Music makes you feel lethargically awful, the Singing makes you want to drink or run away. If you get past the music, and listen to the lyrics, you feel a cross of "Where is this man's Sack?" and "Oh My, we need to rush him a suicide intervention". Musicality wise, I apologize, there is no music here just a super sad, sad droning of whine. Unless you are so healthy that nothing can scar you mentally, Keep your Prozac close at hand! Buyer beware! Yes, I am being a bit tongue in cheek here, but this is really bad.
Please allow this review to help you. Seriously, Save your money. If you buy, I can't say I didn't try to warn you. If you really are one who likes Micah's work, you'd be one of a very few.
Micah P. Hinson.......2005-08-15
Moving themed album of heartbroken love gone wrong, inseperable from Hinson's own real life suffering & struggle, as deep and affecting as Richard Buckner's Devotion & Doubt (although lyrically less prfound), of a sustained melancholic mood but lifted by the varied intrumentation and by the quality of the melodys

Album Description
On the full-length follow-up to his critically acclaimed "The Baby And The Satellite" EP, Hinson offers a substantiated account of misery and triumph, evoking translucent memories and physical struggle. During an ironically twisted period of heavy medication and pain brought on by recent back surgery, this release is the product of rallying above physical torment, facing proverbial closeted skeletons, and discovering eventual resolution through the power of euphoric connection. A veritable reminder that progress through pain can be intimate, heartfelt, and epically necessary. For fans of Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens, Silver Jews, Smog.
Customer Reviews:
Great Album.......2007-07-19
This album is great. An excellent range of music that truly showcases his talent as a musician and his songwriting abilities.
a real treasure.......2007-04-23
I first heard of Hinson when the local college radio station played a couple songs from the Opera Circuit. I haven't been so impressed in a long time. I picked the album up a couple days ago and am absolutly in love with it. Great lyrics and use of instruments that are seldom combined in one style. So few people use the underrated sound of the banjo and Hinson uses it to great effect along with cello, violins and horns. Hinson's voice is another great standout, sort of a softer version of Tom Waits. If you're looking to get drunk and pine over lost loves, this is the album you want to be listening to. I highly recommend picking up this album before Hinson becomes another name brand. Hopefully he won't.
An Ablolute Gem From An Amazing Songwriter!.......2006-10-21
I originally saw Micah when he opened for David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) a few months ago, and he was amazing. In fact, I saw him do the sound check before the show started, and talked to him a bit about music and everything (really great guy). From there on, I've been a fan of his, he just keeps getting a whole lot better with every record (you should get his other records, too). "...and the Opera Circut" is an absolutely amazing record. The added arangments suit his songs and voice perfectly, they don't overwhelm and/or distract. My favorite songs from the record are is the beatutiful granduar of "Jackeyed", the lush, lively "Diggin A Grave" and the intimate "Drift Off To Sleep". This record is an absolute gem, just do yourself a favor and buy it.

Album Description
Hinson's first release for Jade Tree harkens back to a stripped-down, self-professed "lost" period for Texas's critically acclaimed singer/songwriter. This EP animates the emptiness of back country roads and late teenage displacement. Hinson's distinct brand of country-noir is delivered over hushed vocals and subdued guitars, shaded by fragments of Dylan's storytelling and Bill Callahan's (Smog) ability to tap into the darker emotions of real life. This is an endearing journey through Hinson's fractured past, searching for signs of hope in the somber halls of a downtrodden Middle America.

Beautiful and Honest Music.......2006-11-11
I came across this cd while ordering another and decided to buy one based on the samples. I'm truly amazed at Micah P. Hinson's talent - he must be an old soul, as everyone keeps saying. I have since bought the other cd's and love them all. If you don't like music with sincerity, depth or an amazing singer, then you might agree with one reviewer, but otherwise I think you'll love this artist and cd.
