"This is the sound that sparks the fire," sings Matt Breen on Emanuel's debut album, and it's easy to see his point. Soundtrack To A Headrush is filled with songs that immediately burn into the brain, from the rampaging guitar histrionics of "You Cannot Rape The Willing" to the measured emotional pull of "Make Tonight." The thing is, there is no specific sound to speak of - this is the kind of album that immediately sets off a game of guess the influence. Was that chord change more reminiscent of Helmet or Black Flag? Does that rhythm sound more like The (International) Noise Conspiracy or Cave In? Was that just an AC/DC riff I heard? Fortunately, the Louisville, KY band's unflinching intensity and Breen's throat-ravaging growl is distinctly its own. And sometimes that's enough to keep things ablaze. -- Aidin Vaziri

"Listen up motherf***ers ..........2006-06-16
... this is that new, unheard of, unspoken. So if you're down, then get down, and if you're not, then get the f*** out!" begins track number one, The Hey Man. I look for this band to do great things in future. These days, it is difficult to find a band in this genre that brings something new to the table. "Soundtrack to a Headrush" is full of energetic music that is sure to get your blood pumping, but it also has some tracks that slow things down and show another side of the band. My favorites are below :
1. The Hey Man - One of the best intros that I have ever heard. It really does its job well - introduces you to what the rest of the CD will be like while at the same time keep you wanting more of it.
3. You Cannot Rape The Willing - I guess what really makes this song great is the chorus. Nuff said.
6. Soundtrack To A Headrush - The title track is sort of one of those breaks in the action. It slows things down and pleases your ears better than the other lighter tracks in my opinion.
So, here's the deal, if you're into this genre, this is an innovative band. However, you might want to wait until their next album if this stuff just aint your scene. Thank you for your time.
A "New" Sound for the Screamo Scene.......2006-05-20
I'm always looking for a band that maintains the raw rock sound that I love so very much, but that gives the sound a unique twist. Emanuel is one of those bands. Now I'm not saying that they're perfect as this is a pretty raw debut album, but it's a refreshing sound in the stagnant, sound-alike screamo genre of today.
Emanuel manages to mix a sort of dance-core, screamo, and straight up rock sound together with this album. Whether you want to play a rock album in the background of a party, drive really fast, or mosh your face off Soundtrack to a Headrush works great. This album has a great mix of sounds from the screamo/rock of "Hey Man" and "Buy American Machines" to the pop-rock, punk-influence drive of "The Willing" and "Breathe Underwater" to the slower yet powerful rock song "Make Tonight".
Pros:
~ Lots of different sounds on one album, which allows for Emanuel to pretty much go any direction with future releases without alienating their fanbase.
~ Lots of energy
~ Not angsty
~ The songs aren't all about girls and poor emo-boys getting their hearts broken. And even when songs are about women they aren't the typical angsty, "ripped my heart out" lyrics.
~ Unique twist on Screamo/Rock genre
Cons:
~ Not too much depth in the music (by depth I mean changing sounds in one song, which is hard to pull of, especially in a 3 minute song) Fortunately, depth is not the most important part of this type of music.
Forewarning: There is a lot of screaming, which may be good or bad depending on your preference. In my opinion the screaming is well done. Also there is swearing and adult subject matter, so conservative parents might not want to get this album for their kid.
Overall this is a great debut album and I can't wait to hear more from Emanuel.
Redefining an overcrowded genre..........2006-04-04
let's face it... today the emo/screamo/hardcore trend is so terribly milked out that it makes me forget what an actual "good" band is in this genre. sure you have your great bands like taking back sunday, thursday, thrice, brandnew, armor for sleep, the used, finch, coheed, etc. but in the last three years it's hard to pick apart innovative bands like the aforementioned when it seems like it's all been done.
i introduce to you a band called "emanuel" and their debut album "soundtrack to a headrush". even though this band is young, don't that fool you. this sounds like a band years into their career and i'm not afraid to say this is one of the best albums released in the last couple of years in this genre. sure you can label them "screamo" or but that just doesn't do the band justice. the diversity on the album and the freshness is what makes this band standout from the rest. you can label this band probably 5 different genres but all in all, they just flat bring the rock!
i found out about these guys from an armor for sleep interview and they said emanuel was one of their new favorite bands. with that said, i purchased the album and was blown away with the rawness and power. i thought to myself, i've never heard anything quite like this before.
the musicianship is very tight and the singing/screaming is not your typical screamo duals. also, throughout the album you can hear some 80's metal in the music. it's very fresh sounding and the lyrics are very relatable and humorous at times. their are also some slower songs that break up the more anthem driven songs but overall is a great split of both.
if your a fan of screamo you will probably enjoy this album. although it's not your typical screamo, they actually have some talent and a fresh sound. i believe this is the sleeper album of 2005 and i can't wait for a new release from these guys in the future. this band has a huge sound here and lets just say these guys should be getting recognition soon. highly recommended...
Surprisingly good..........2006-02-09
Let me start out by saying that this album is not the best album ever created. It has some flaws, slow moments, and randomness. However, as a self-proclaimed music snob and one who very rarely likes "the next big screamo band," I find myself begrudgingly admitting that this album is pretty freaking good. Emanuel has one thing a lot of their "screamo"/"punk" counterparts don't have: talent. They know how to write a catchy and energetic song and their delivery is unique and at times, inspiring. If every band that came down the pike claiming to be "punk" sounded like Emanuel, the world would be a better place. However, we're still stuck with bands like A Simple Plan and Good Charlotte, meaning all is lost.
Emanuel deserve all the positive attention they've received, as this is one of the better albums of last year.
One of the best of 2005........2005-11-25
If you're familiar with this genre, you know there's a literal ton of bands that claim to herald a "return to riff rock," then end up sounding like pale rip-offs of In Flames. How appropriate, then, that Emanuel claim to do no such thing and yet do more for that assertion than truckloads of other screamo/metal outfits.
Emanuel's music is punk metal of the caliber one would expect from Kurt Cobain taking a weekend to fully indulge in his Led Zeppelin fetish, or if someone dropped an anvil on Brad Nowell's foot too many times and really pissed him off. The punk influence is still the band's strongest element, but the screams and some of the rhythms shed light on a metal edge that cannot be denied. Lead vocalist Matt Breen possesses a throaty yelp that howls with sincerity while meshing perfectly with the meaty crunch guitar backdrop.
Breen is usually screaming his piece against fashionistas and the damnation of pop culture, like on the opening cut "Hey Man!" and my personal favorite, the social awareness anthem "Xeroxicide" with its full throttle rhythmic pound. The chorus breakdowns interrupt the song like heads rolling away from the guillotine, but conversely to that situation, "Xeroxicide" is one tune that will stick inside your head. Elsewhere, Breen croons this band's amusing idea of a love ballad on the slow-grinding "Make Tonight," like a Motown hit if Barry White were a punk that liked to sing about cunnilingus.
"Soundtrack to a Headrush" is quirky in the best ways and rocks all the way through. You'd be hard pressed to find many albums recorded under the flag of hard rock this year that come close to touching "Soundtrack." Hey brother, put your best shoes on, grow your hair out long, and tell your sister her music sucks.

Album Description
Drawing upon varied roots, The Booda Velvets' collaborative songwriting has evolved to create a unique sound that combines strong melodies, evocative lyrics, captivating guitars and solid grooves. Their debut album, "Headrush," displays an impressive range and depth, from the moody and kinetic title track to the hard-driving anthem ''American.'' With a blend of lush distorted guitars, melodic vocals, and layered soundscapes, The Booda Velvets craft songs that are passionate and intelligent. Their music explores dynamics ranging from intense and visceral to dreamy and serene, with an undercurrent of pop sensibility that occasionally rises to the surface.

Worth the Time.......2005-11-05
So, what's in a name? The Booda Velvets may have taken their name from an animal care product, but they hail from New York City, so the `Velvets" reference is not going to go unnoticed. Nevertheless, these guys have precious little in common with the Velvet Underground. Nor do they have much in common with the underground scene at all. Instead, they are quite excellent songsmiths who appear much more interested in making good, mainstream music than in maintaining some formulaic allegiance to any underground (can you say "The Strokes?"). To my ears, the band they most resemble is Live (less that band's pompous, straight-faced self-indulgence), which I think is also surely unintentional. Even then, this resemblance is mostly due to the production, particularly in regard to the processed lead vocals.
Headrush is a musically accomplished piece of work that can insistently demand your attention, without becoming overbearing. Indeed, it is this set of contrasts that brings most of this disk to life. The lyrics can be pointed and purposeful, but never lapse toward pedantic or preachy; The vocals are consistently emotional, perhaps even desperate, but never shrill or pathetic; And the music is well arranged and cautiously produced, without sounding false or overworked. The arrangements deserve special merit, with all songs full of good ideas that help them to resonate well after the song ends. Two songs incorporate cellos ("Altitude" and "Everything Under the Sun"), and in both instances, they push the songs higher, until they soar.
"Cassius Clay", a song that uses the boxer as a metaphor for never quitting, is not as corny as it sounds, and in fact would probably make for a great lead single. "American" is a track that invokes the pre-9/11-but-post-Amadou-Diallo point of reference toward the police force; perhaps unfortunate in its timing, but not any less relevant than, say Springsteen's "41 Shots" (interesting faux pas: the guitar lick imitates a European siren, not the nauseating squawk that is so ubiquitous in New York City). Although they are unashamedly driven by the alternative-pop-rock market, the Booda Velvets aren't afraid to tackle odd time signatures, either, with "Salome's Wish" kicking hard in 7/4 for four solid minutes before it breaks the tension and resolves into a standard 4/4 beat. Also deserving special mention are "Staring At the Sun", "Solitaire" and "Waiting", which are good enough to trash all unnecessary comparisons; taken together, these songs prove that this band is good enough to stand on its own.
I think it's pretty cool that these guys appear to be completely disinterested in posing, or playing themselves into a corner. New York City is a tough environment for a band that doesn't adapt to its pre-ordained sense of what a NYC band ought to be, and the Boodas music rings true because they don't compromise. The songs on this collection have an emotional resonance that rings true, and it ought to ring well beyond the borders of the city that has borne them. A- Tom Ryan
Beautiful, intense rock.......2005-08-05
A fantastic debut from a band that was enthralling live, and here is captured just as compellingly. From high-energy rockers like "Cassius Clay" to the sparkling title track, to the politically charged "American," this CD is packed with great songs. Fairly successful at the indie level, it's a shame that this band never made it really big -- they were just a couple of years ahead of their time.
*BAM*.......2002-12-15
I loved this cd, me and my women make love to this cd all the time *BAM*
Fantastic Fusion.......2002-05-25
I saw the Booda Velvets live in Urbana, Illinois. They openned for Gene Loves Jezebel, believe it or not! But unfortunately they followed a horrible frat band and the crowd was thin when they went on. Regardless, they put on a fantastic show and hooked me to their fusion of all that's good about modern rock. They are fun to watch and definitely experience their music when they play. They're also really nice guys and came down to introduce themselves to everyone in the audience. "Headrush" is a phenomenal debut.
An incredible debut album!!!.......2002-05-01
I have yet to miss a show in Uniontown with these guys. I actually heard them live first, which they produced an incredible show. I then bought the cd. I have become a huge fan. They could be classified I guess as an "Electric Rock" type of band but they pull in such a wide variety of melodies in the music spectrum. If you like Stereophonics, Radiohead, Coldplay or The Clarks, you will definitly like these guys. With Dan on vocals/guitar, Adam also on guitar, James on bass and John on drums, this band will have great success. I hope to hear these guys on the radio soon. Buy the cd, I highly recommend it!!!

One of my favorite albums.......2003-04-05
I actually know Josh from camp many years ago. I have owned a copy of Headrush since 1992 (and many since then because I have played them till they were too scratched!) I play this album usually when I need a pick-me-up as it natuarlly gives me a high on life. I recommend it to anyone that enojoys great rock n roll!
This album contains a little bit of everything........1998-06-01
Joshua Path is a very unheard of talent. His music has not reached any mass markets but I think it should. His music is fantastic! He plays a wonderful guitar, a mind-boggling saxophone. He's got music that makes you feel great. Some songs are funny, some are about drugs, some are about everyday life. His lyrics will blow your mind. His voice is very pleasing to listen to, comparable to the late Michael Huthence of INXS. The music rocks, you can head bang to it, you can dance to it, some of the songs are soothing melodies. This masterpiece contains a large variety of musical styles that will lift your spirit and will make you want to listen to it over and over. A MASTERPIECE!

Customer Reviews:
For Labyrinth Fans.......2006-10-04
Frontiers has a pretty stellar track record when it comes to giving established vocalists new projects that stretch their talents a bit. In the last couple of years they have served up From the Inside (featuring former Tyketto vocalist Danny Vaughn), Place Vendome (featuring former Helloween vocalist Michael Kiske), and Starbreaker (featuring former TNT vocalist Tony Harnell). I loved all of those albums, so when I saw that Headrush featured Labyrinth singer Roberto Tiranti (a.k.a. Rob Tyrant), I knew I had to check it out.
Comparisons to Labyrinth are inevitable. I mean, as soon as you hear Tiranti's voice you immediately think of Labyrinth. The Headrush album is also very melodic (it is a Frontiers album after all), which is another similarity to Labyrinth. That's where the similarities end though. The melodic hard rock on this album is a far cry from the progressive power metal that Labyrinth is known for. We're not talking Journey-style AOR here, but it's not metal either.
The music on Headrush is somewhere between Dokken and Pink Cream 69. It's heavy enough, but the emphasis is definitely on the melodies. The real question is whether Tiranti's vocal style fits this type of music, and the answer is...sometimes. There are moments on this disc where everything fits together perfectly, and then there are times where Tiranti's unique voice sticks out like a sore thumb. It's not that he does a bad job - far from it. You just find yourself expecting Olaf Thorson to break in with a blistering metal solo at any minute.
Overall, this is a pretty solid melodic hard rock album. It doesn't quite measure up to the albums I mentioned earlier, but it should appeal to most Labyrinth fans.

the band of the new mellinium.......2001-04-04
This is the biggest musical break through sence, Pink Floyd... This is the 1st album that, in more years than I can remember, deserves to be called an album. Urrbin Ledjinz is very comparative to the likes of "Dark side of the moon" or " OK Computer"... The production quality of this record is down right spiritual. These guys know how to capture emotion. I can't wait for them to start scoring film.
The album takes off in high gear with "Roar", and ending with the pillow talk of "Keez" down right intimate Serena, MC Sonic, TC Izlam and Von Da Fierce who would have thought of a better cast of characters to portray a thought...Every song continues the thought of the last there are no breaks and no singles because thay are all about music you can feel it...Genius!
"HEADRUSH"=Shaka and Conrad aka WZRD and JNGL are the force two be reconded with and "The HEADRUSH Cru(THC)"... the band of the hand. Trent Reznor, David Lynch, Maynard of Tool, Portishead, Massive Attack, Dillinja, Pantera, Def Tones, Aphex Twin, Bjork, Chris Cunningham and now HEADRUSH.
The funny thing is they are all more than likely listening to them now. The must have for any true music lover..
