5 out of 5 stars A good value.......2007-05-17

I wasn't expecting to have 4 discs for this price, and the music is a quality selection of film music, giving a good scope of the genre, and a very listenable transfer.

4 out of 5 stars The Sound Track Since Bernard Hermann.......2006-07-25

This collection is bound to capture your heart and evoke a tin ear on successive tracks. I found much to like and some duds - easy to skip over.
Very good value.

4 out of 5 stars Good mix of film music.......2006-07-02

Good mix of films!
I'm a big fan of this soundtrack music and will be looking for more CD's like this.

4 out of 5 stars A mixed collection of movie music.......2006-02-23

For the price, this CD is a great bargain. The musical selections, as you might expect, are mixed in quality ranging from extraordinary to so so, the balance being worthwhile and interesting. Sonically the CD is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best!.......2005-08-06

I have all of David Lee Murphy's CD's and love them all, however, this has got to be one of my favorites. There is not one song on this CD that I don't like. He's got the ballads and he's got the rockers. If you've never heard him before, check him out. I guarantee you will like him!

5 out of 5 stars A great country album.......2005-06-02

David's roots are clearly in traditional country but his music has a contemporary edge to it. He is well capable of singing both ballads and up-tempo songs, always on themes that you expect from country singers. David writes (at least on this album) all of his own songs, though sometimes with the help of a co-writer.

The album starts in great style with Every time I get around you, an up-tempo love song. Of the other songs, my favorites are Genuine rednecks (another up-tempo song to get those toes tapping), 100 years to late (a ballad about a man reflecting on white might have been), Breakfast in Birmingham (a mid-tempo song about a man wishing he hadn't asked a woman to leave him) and I've been a rebel (a reflective ballad). All the other songs are also of a high quality.

David was one among many brilliant country singers that emerged in the nineties and had some success but was unable to sustain it. Nevertheless, if you enjoy the music of Alan Jackson, you will probably enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Artist, excellent album.......2004-02-19

This is still one of my all time favorite country albums. Out With A Bang was good as well, but this was even better. I can listen straight through without skipping anything. "Everytime I get Around You" is just an awesome song. "The Road You Leave Behind" and "She's Really Something To See" are both great songs as well. Pirates Cove is a cool little song in it's own right. I just saw David in his return concert last month promoting his new release coming out in March. He played a local bar and was just as good as ever. He really entertained and his newest song "Loco" has to be heard live to really be appreciated. I have to recommend this to anyone who is at all in to Country music.

5 out of 5 stars Nice album........2000-09-08

Country music started to lose its edge in the mid 90s and albums almost had to follow some sort of formula. This one in a sense did that, but for some reason it has staying power, whereas most of the country albums that came out at that time have just kind of faded away. The guitars are great, Murphy's got the voice thing going on, and the lyrics are a good match. I don't know anyone who doesn't like "The Road You Leave Behind." Most tracks pay homage to rednecks and the rural lifestyle, which is something I appreciate. I love this CD, but would like to offer David Lee Murphy one piece of advice: Lose the hat. Your hair is too big.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!!!!!.......1999-03-10

I have been a fan of David Lee since "Out With A Bang"came out.My favorites on "Gettin'Out The Good Stuff"are "Everytime I get Around You","The Road You Leave Behind",and "Genuine Rednecks".This CD is not a waste at all.It is the best one that I own.COUNTRY MUSIC AT ITS BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Minus Cindy Wilson this is marginally less cosmic than its multi-platinum predecessor. Still, there's plenty of delicious absurdity ("Is That You Mo-Dean"), Seventies camp ("Hot Pants Explosion"), serious romance ("Revolution Earth") and a tune ("Good Stuff") that frankly celebrates the wild thing. Let's not be stingy: this is great• stuff. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Underrated and Overshadowed.......2007-02-10

"Good Stuff" is a great album that has been overshadowed by "Cosmic Thing." On its own, it is a solid, well-crafted album that deserved both wider play and a wider audience. "Cosmic Thing" is an amazing album, and when "Good Stuff" was released three years later, people were expecting more of the same. What they got was the B-52's exploring more new territory. No worries, there is plenty of fun and plenty to love on this album, but it is definitely NOT a follow-up to "Cosmic Thing." "Good Stuff" stands on it's own and deserves more respect than it received upon it's initial release.

3 out of 5 stars I like it better than Cosmic Thing.......2006-05-12

Released in 1992, this is the B-52's last studio album. It is 56 minutes long and sound quality is very good. Although it does not have a smash hit like Love Shack (best song of 1989), I like it a little better than Cosmic Thing.

This CD is no longer in print, but is readily available at any used CD store at a very low price. I got mine for 3 bucks.

I previously wrote that the B-52's were a one joke wonder (which, of course, upset a lot of long time fans). But, they were one of the many gimmick new wave bands to come out of the late seventies/early eighties. These gimmick bands were fun but usually very limited, musically. The B-52's gimmick was beehive haircuts, electronic music and yodelling. When they first started out, they couldn't even play instruments, and used recorded guitar loops. But, they did make some fun, danceable music.

When the B-52's started out in the late seventies, playing in punk bar bars, they were young, novel, innovative, exciting and edgy. Trying to prolong that music style when they are 15 years older is just pathetic.

The CD starts out with the dreadful Tell It Like T-I-Is. This is a song that goes back to the original B-52's sound. If it were a quick 2 minute romp, it might be good. The problem is that it gets strecthed out to 6 minutes and just becomes annoying. And this is the problem with most of the later day B-52's songs. Their songs used to be edgy, short numbers. Now they try and drag out the songs too long.

The next song, Hot Pants Explosion is another case of trying to drag out a song too long. It is really a fun, and funny song that is ruined by being stretched out.

The worst track is the World's Green Laughter which is a rhythm with a bunch of silly noises.

This CD is at its best when the group abandons the old sound and goes for more traditional rock, but still with that new wave influence. The good songs are Good Stuff, Revolution Earth and Bad Influence.

1 out of 5 stars Caution, ye B-52 fans.......2006-01-05

I have loved the B52s since 1980. I bought this CD when it came out and listened to it once. I just took it out and listened to it again, before throwing away so I could make good use of the case. There's a reason why Amazon currently lists 150 used starting at 40 cents.

I wouldn't even waste my time writing this, but there are some really good reviews on here, and somebody has to tell the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Solid cd!!!.......2004-09-08

Really this cd is underated I mean ok it is a little annoying with like Mo-dean and stuff but the intermentals sound great and alot of the songs have really catchy vocals. Lot of hits like Hot pants explosion, Tell it like it t I is, bad influence and all those others. The worst song on the album has the coolest band beat tho so it makes up for it's annoyinginess. As for Mo-dean the tought was there the concept was great song tho rather annoying.

4 out of 5 stars Not a cosmic hit!.......2004-07-13

Following the release of COSMIC THING in 1989,B-52's member Kate Pierson joined R.E.M. in the recording of ME IN HONEY and SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE from R.E.M.'s 1991 megahit album OUT OF TIME(I forgot to mention the latter song in the review for COSMIC THING). In 1992 came this album which sold far less than COSMIC THING. The B-52's were reduced from a quartet to a trio. Cindy Wilson quit the band after COSMIC THING. Fred Schneider's words,as usual, are spoken instead of sung. On the first track there's a bit of weirdness("tell it like it T-I is"). HOT PANTS EXPLOSION("at the factory") is awesome("they're getting so hot,we might have to take them off!")! The title track is also awesome. Pierson sings,"How about giving me some of that good stuff!". Schneider replies,"Here it is,here it is!". IS THAT YOU MO-DEAN is cool. To this day,I have no idea what that's supposed to mean. THE WORLD'S GREEN LAUGHTER is instrumental. Other cool tracks are BAD INFLUENCE,VISION OF A KISS and BREEZIN'. Not one song on this album gained as much attention as COSMIC THING'S LOVE SHACK. After this album, the band recorded MEET THE FLINTSTONES for the 1994 Universal film,THE FLINTSTONES which I like better than the version heard in the animated sitcom's opening and closing montages.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music but really mellow towards the end.......2004-03-03

I picked up this CD after being exposed to Eric Bibb on the Sisters & Brothers disc.

This CD is really good and I like it. The one comment worth mentioning is that it gets pretty mellow half way through and slows down quite a bit.

This isn't a CD full of foot stompin accoustic blues although it kinda starts out that way.

It is still really good none-the-less. Since life is all about expectations, I thought it useful to let you know what you're getting: a great accoustic cd with soulfull delivery of bluesy/gospelly material.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic Acoustic Blues!.......2002-07-26

I take my hat off to Mr. Bibb! The CD touched my very soul! Muddy, John Lee, and Son House have got to be looking down with proud at that young man! Get it, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful.......2001-09-13

Eric Bibb and Needed Time's "Good Stuff" is one of the best CDs I have listened to in a long time. Their gentle treatment of Blues and Gospel creates a wonderful atmosphere (this is further enhanced by the fact that the CD was recorded in a special studio - the music as it was recorded wasn't modified in any way!). Whereas Keb' Mo' (unfortunately) seems to be drifting away from Blues towards Easy Listening, Eric Bibb has stayed closely related to Blues, keeping the Blues alive and well for all of us to enjoy. Acoustic Blues at its best! Good Stuff!!

5 out of 5 stars doc_ENT.......2001-02-12

Saw Eric in a small venue concert and had to have this CD. Great music to listen to. Will make you smile, tap your foot and feel good, no matter what kind of music you lean toward. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars 'Good Stuff' Indeed!.......2000-03-31

I hardly know where to begin! Gorgeous playing, wonderful songs, great vocals, pristine recording! If "Shingle By Shingle," "Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down" and "Happy Home Recipe" don't lift you to some higher plane, I don't know what will. "Rough Waters" actually brought tears to my eyes. By all means, discover Eric Bibb!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Isabelle is the best.......2004-04-27

I'm a french girl leaving in L.A and I didn't know Isabelle Antena before this compilation. Not only her track (the opening one) is the best of the CD , but I discovered her best of album (l'alphabet du plaisir) and she's one of the greatest bossa singer I've ever heard.A real diva.

5 out of 5 stars Good CD........2002-06-11

While I profess to know very little about music, I think I have good taste. I love this cd, every track from start to finish seems to find the right blend between groovy/relaxing. Would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2002-03-25

Another one of those trip-hop/jazz compilations that just won't leave the CD player. An eclectic blend of smooth cuts from Thievery Corp, Nightmares On Wax, and others, perfect for coming down from a fast night of drinking too much and sobering out. The song by Cool Blue (track 9, not 10) is just so chill, it sends shivers and Dub Tractor's "104 Dub" has that ambient groove to it...way cool.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-03-12

This CD has been in almost constant rotation in the CD player at our house since purchase. It flows really well, each song is very different, but very interesting, and they all seem to complement each other. Can't wait to try the other ESL offerings.

4 out of 5 stars Sizzles, fizzles, then sizzles........2002-02-06

I was interested in this track as I knew of Batu and some of the other artists featured. But to be honest, the only tracks I listen to on this album are the first two. The Isabelle Antena track is incredibly smooth while the Batu track seems to teleport you back in time to Brazil in the 70's early 80's. But from then on up for a while the album goes into a 70's sort of lounge feel, which isn't really bad considering that's the way the album's supposed to go. Just not my cup of tea.

So if you're looking for something like the first two tracks, where are heavy Bossa Nova/tropical feel, you get it in the first two tracks only. Otherwise I'd recommend Jet Society instead - and if you have that, Boss-a-Troniq (1+2), Brazilectro (1+2) or Hedkandi's Serve Chilled Volume 3. The rest of this album is solid with some ups - notably Shantel and Thievery Corporation's own track in it.

Having pulled often-stellar duty in both genres for many a year, film-scoring vet Alan Silvestri should know if the show-biz adage that drama is easy, it's comedy that's hard is true. For the Brad Pitt/Julia Roberts comic-romantic adventure The Mexican (the title refers to an antique pistol that must be smuggled back across the border), Silvestri taps a little of his recent history--and some sage genre insight--to conjure up a breezy, playful score that evokes everything from Leone's Dollars trilogy and traditional Mexican folk music to pastoral jazz flourishes and club kitsch. But a decidedly Morricone-meets-Bacharach sensibility prevails throughout, with the composer often lovingly tweaking the familiar banjo, harmonica, and choral clichés of the spaghetti Western into music that is refreshing even as it is strangely familiar. A handful of pop songs adds another layer of loopiness to the proceedings--especially the remix of Men Without Hats' chestnut from the early 1980s, "The Safety Dance," and the sprightly "El Cable" by Mexican exotica master Esquivel. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Ennio Morricone or Alain Silvestri.......2004-06-11

Alain Silvestri did a great job. He choose the songs' melodies sounds like the Spagetti Western Movies' great composer Ennio Morricone's unforgettable Spagetti Western movie themes. The Main Title and The Mexican songs are the great example ones. Also "Where is my staff" too. "Thieves" is another one of the greatest. And list goes on.. I love Ennio's songs that's why i love this soundtrack. If you love Ennio's stuffs too this soundtrack give you all you need.
Many of the soundtracks don't have every songs. So you have to find the other songs anywhere. For God's shake The Mexican is not an example oof this. This is not just a Soundtrack. IT'S a SCORE and a SOUNDTRACK. You can find the MOVIE SONGS and THE OTHER lyrical songs in this soundtrack. This is it's other plus too.

3 out of 5 stars A complement to the movie which does not stand alone so well.......2002-05-27

I thought the sound track to the movie was a great complement to it but after I bought it I felt that it did not stand up by itself very well. Its themes seemed too short and disjointed. But, I plan to play it on my CD player in random mode along with other CD's. Then I think it can complement the music it is interspersed with - depending on the music.

4 out of 5 stars soundtrack , the mexcian.......2001-04-22

the starting theme song, is the my all time favourite, watch the movie, and u'll know y.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack for a good movie.......2001-03-06

The Soundtrack for "The Mexican" is not necessarily one of the greatest soundtracks ever made, but it does capture the essence of the movie. The distinguishable guitar plucks and the internitten catchy songs are great. Overall...if you liked the movie, you should like the soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Fun.......2001-03-06

Hot Fun is the best way to describe the soundtrack to The Mexican. It's fast paced, boisterous, and makes for great listening on any type of trip. Be prepared for drives to the grocery store to become a lot more exciting! The mix of vocal and instrumental selections add to the versatility of the disk and give it a unique flavor. Even if you haven't seen the movie, this CD would be a great addition to any CD collection!

3 out of 5 stars must have album.......2007-02-13

The album is just great, but i give 3 stars because of the sound quality is a little dissapointing (taken from vinyl and sounds like a cd from the mid-eighties), the original masters are gone??.
Every serious soul fan should have the song "what about my love" in his collection though.

    5 out of 5 stars Required Listening!!!!.......2007-01-25

I have purchased this cd time after time, only to be "jacked" by various family members after playin' it again and again. This really is the last orchestrated soul music made! The title track is worth the price by itself! His ad-libs, the string arrangements, etc. really will make you cry. A must have for any soul music lover.

4 out of 5 stars The last truly great soul music ever recorded........2005-12-13

If one omits the last two tracks, which are disposable by anyone's standards, and listens to the first four only, this is soul music's final triumph before it became corporate fodder with drum machines, songs without melodies and Pro-Tools pitch tweaked vocals. What we have here is one of the handful of LPs (the vinyl issues sound far superior to the CD releases, they're well worth hunting down) issued on the short-lived Beverly Glen label. Many complaints were made by the few artists that recorded for Otis Smith's short-lived label about non-payment of royalties, but whatever the truth is about that matter, the music recorded on Beverly Glen was generally of the highest order. This is the label where Bobby Womack recorded the classic Poet I and Poet II albums, Chapter 8 released the stunning "How Can I Get Next to You?", Anita Baker recorded her finest record, "The Songstress", and Johnnie Taylor made this album. Why is this music so superior to all the dross that has followed it? How about: no drum machines, no sampling, real musicians, exotic string arrangements, brilliant songs, genuinely soulful performances by the lead artists, and, underneath it all, PATRICK MOTEN (and to a slightly lesser degree, Michael J. Powell). The late Patrick Moten was a keyboard player and composer/arranger, and you will find his stamp all over these Beverly Glen records. Literally anything Moten managed to get recorded clears the floor with the work of his contemporaries. Check out Mica Paris' 12 inch B-side "Where Are the Children" - yes a B-side mind you, Moten often got relegated to B-sides; or Rosie Gaine's "Crazy" - you'll soon be trying to track down everything Moten was associated with - want more proof? How about Bobby Womack's "How Could You Break My Heart" from the Roads of Life album. Moten, like the little known Sam Dees, was perhaps soul music's last stand: after Moten it has been endless streams of cod-soul, cornball electro-funk and Prince-alikes. Today, I don't even think there is such a thing as soul music. Anyway, if you've read this far, just go ahead and by this CD - Taylor sings from the pit of his soul, the first four songs will melt your heart, and the title cut, "Just Ain't Good Enough", is one of the greatest soul compositions and performances ever recorded - once you're familiar with the song, pay attention to the string arrangements, the instrumentation, the backing vocals - then weep - this is how records used to sound, but never will again.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC , THE Great JOHNNIE TAYLOR.......2000-06-12

I have not heard this gem ,since it was released back in the year 1982. Listening to it again, just blew me away! This is must buy for any Johnnie Taylor fans. R.I.P JOHNNIE TAYLOR!

5 out of 5 stars The Legend has passed, but his legacy still lives on!.......2000-06-11

What can you say about the whailer! He was a phenominal talent. Anyone who does not have J.T. in their music collection, is indeed missing a part of soul music history!

May he rest in perfect peace.

      Album Description

Avid's well filled (78.23) re-mastered CD contains Max's first recorded live shows at the Holborn Empire in 1938, together with two further routines recorded live at the Finsbury Park Empire between October 1939 and September 1942. For good measure we have also included wartime recordings with an appreciative forces audience and two extra `studio' recordings.

With his machine gun like repartee and his exotic flowered suits and kipper ties Max Miller was certainly a true original….as the man once said of himself "there'll never be another".
