Album Description
"Deja View" is the second album from the Texas-based group Hanna's Reef. The album is a follow-up to their 2002 live recording, "Reef Madness", which is also available on amazon.com . This album was recorded in-studio, and features 14 tracks of original music, all written by Hanna's Reef guitarist Jerry Diaz. Nine of these tracks were previously released by the band Key West, of which Diaz was a member. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Danny Broussard, at The Control Room, in Nederland, Texas.
The inside liner notes of the Cd contain the following message from Jerry Diaz:
"This album is called "Deja View", because it contains some of our favorite songs from our past, and also some of the new music that we're making now. We hope that by putting these songs side by side on the same album, our fans can see that we intend to continue where we left off a couple of years ago. The same style, but updated as we go along. You can expect that trend to continue on future Hanna's Reef albums.
So if you've been looking for something to fill that void that only a folk, country, reggae, rockin' calypso band can fill, you've found a home here on the Reef. We'll have the crawfish and raw oysters waiting for you. Later, we're gonna break out the rum and the cold beer, and have us a party. Welcome aboard mate!"
Customer Reviews:
Great album, great band!.......2004-08-17
What a pleasant surprise this purchase turned out to be! I heard about Hanna's Reef from a friend of mine in Texas. She had seen them perform at a festival there this summer. I had not heard them, but bought the Deja View CD on her recommendation.
"Rum in Pensacola" is just awesome! I think that if this song ever gets on the radio, it will be a national hit. But it's not the only good song here. They are just one right after another. "Tropical Girl" is great, and so is "Beer Drinkers and Sail Raisers". These guys just have a great sound, and their music really makes people feel good.
I definitley recommend this CD to anyone who likes fun, uplifting, "tropical" music!
Best yet.......2004-05-25
What makes Hanna's Reef stand apart is that in their live shows they blend original music with Buffett-esque covers. They are not just another cover band. This album combines nine of Jerry's original songs that were recorded in his previous lifetime, with five new original tunes. The opening track, Rum In Pensacola, is worth the price of the CD by itself. If this song doesn't get some radio play, somebody missed the boat. The rest of the new songs are great, and the older songs have been updated and sound great also.
Another great album from Hanna's Reef!.......2004-05-25
The second CD, first studio CD from Hanna's Reef has 14 tracks, 5 new songs along with 9 re-recorded songs from back when most of Hanna's Reef played under the name Key West-The Band. Unlike many "re-recorded" songs, these nine songs have been re arranged and reworked in one way or the other, and have a new feel and "soul" to them. They're like new songs and well worth listening to again and again.
The name "Deja View" (which I'm kinda partial to) was chosen because, in Jerry Diaz' words "It contains some of our favorite songs from our past and some of the new music that we're making now."
And Hanna's Reef is making some great music! This CD has been the only one in my player for over a week now and it's not coming out anytime soon.
The CD starts with "Rum in Pensacola", a "kick yourself in the butt because you didn't realize what you had" song. I've been listening to Jerry's songs for eight years now and this song is my favorite.
The next song, "Tropical Girl" is a tropical love story with a Latin flair.
"Beer Drinkers and Sail Raisers" gets it's start from the back of a Hanna's Reef T-Shirt. This song is destined to be the "Sing Along" song on the CD, with lyrics like:
"We're Beer Drinkers and Sail Raisers
Smiles away from the old rat racers
Three sheets to the wind and goin' strong.
We're all for one, one for all
Bound for another port o' call
Doing everything I said I would
Life is good!
"King of the Island" is a story about Galveston Island in the 30's when "Victor was king of the island" and the Mob wanted to move in.
"Island Time" Sometimes the world moves way too fast and there's too much technology. You just want to slow things down.
"Bitter Winds" We've all looked back and said "what if". This song reminds you to keep moving forward, reaching for your "pot of gold".
"Livin Well" This is a song about the "rock star life" but could also apply to a mid-life crisis. Hey, either one, along with this song sounds great and is nothing but fun. Jerry Diaz gets on the mike for this one.
"Jamaica Me Smile" Sometimes you meet someone that makes you feel better than a week in the Keys or in this case, Jamaica.
"Have You Seen Your Rita" We all know or have known someone like this.
"Local Knowledge" "Local Knowledge" is information and stories that you're not going to hear in the tourist traps. You have to go where the locals are. Those memories can sometimes be the best treasures from any trip. This song is one of the treasures of the CD.
"Sail Away" Had Enough? It's time for an escape, a get away. This song is the next best thing to just walking away and heading to the nearest boat.
"Makin' Waves" Another great song about 5 people getting away and Makin' Waves.
"Fun in the Sun" Classic 60's beach song. Very Beach Boy-esque. This song is screaming for a remake with Beach Boy Mike Love sitting in. If your not tapping your feet during this song, call the doctor - You're comatose.
"Everything's Gonna Be Alright" A catchy, feel good song to wrap up the CD.... Well, almost. Here's a hidden "track"
You'll be able to see Hanna's Reef not only at Meeting of the Minds in Key West this November, but also at Riddles in the Sand in Galveston, Texas the last weekend in July.
This review, along with $.75 will get you coffee in some places other than Starbucks. It's just my opinion and you know what they say about those.
Happy listening!
Incredible!.......2004-05-25
I've been following these guys for several years, even before they went by the name "Hanna's Reef". This album is BY FAR head and shoulders above anything they've released up till now. First, the production quality is top-notch. The person credited as "the producer" (Danny Broussard) has finally captured the "feel" that this band has been needing. There are several re-makes of songs that this band recorded previously, when most of them were with "Key West-the band". But with the improved production, and an obvious re-thinking of the instrumentation, these remakes really are like new songs. Especially notable are "Tropical Girl", and "Makin' Waves". They did a fantastic job of updating those two.
Now for the best part of the album though. The five new songs recorded here are superb. The album opens with "Rum in Pensacola", which has has got "radio airplay" written all over it. It's a classic love song, with the Pensacola Beach as a backdrop. Mike Barnett's vocals, and Jerry Diaz's guitar solo at the end highlight this should-be hit. Another great new song is "Beer Drinkers and Sail Raisers". It's a catchy little song that you'll be humming all day after you hear it. As a sailor myself, I can tell you that this is sure to be an anthem for the sailing crowd, once it gets circulated.
The other new tunes include "Living Well", which is a great showcase for Diaz's lyrics. Funny stuff! Also included is another great sailing song "Local Knowledge". It is actually my favorite song on the album. It sounds like something that could have been on Buffett's "Son of a Son of a Sailor" album. And lastly, a mindless little summertime tune called "Fun in the Sun" shows that these guys must have listened to a few Beach Boys albums somewhere along the way.
The overall feel of this album is exactly what I have in mind when I see these guys perform live. It has that heavy bottom end to it, but it's complemented with a breezy acoustic guitar throughout the album, and steel drums to spice things up a bit. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is one of the best albums I've heard in years. I'd give it a rating much higher than a 5, if they'd allow it!

Customer Reviews:
Best collection of marches!.......2006-08-07
In spite of the mixed reviews below, after listening to the samples, I had to send for this CD. I am so glad I did - this is the best collection of marches I have ever owned. It's worth noting that the Band of the Grenadier Guards is a British military band whose history goes back 300 years!
The Best Sousa Album.......2005-09-06
This is the best album of marches I've heard. I agree with the reviewer who said they like these versions better. The orchestral versions are good, but I used to play in the band in high school (no, I don't have any "this one time, at band camp..." stories), so I like this type better.
Sousa Marches.......2005-08-15
I like this CD better than any of the others I previewed, and when it came I wasn't disappointed. I purchased the CD to use with my dog, Nina. She loves it and it has helped her relax and gait more smoothly in preparation for exhibiting in dog shows. This CD was the only one that wasn't performed by a string orchestra. It's more like you would actually hear a marching band at a half-time football game.
There are 2 sections in this CD.......2005-06-30
There are two different sections in this CD. Section 1 includes marches 1 to 12 and it is not the best recording that I have ever hear for Sousa Marches. However, Section 2 includes marches 13 to 23 and I consider that this is one of the best recording I have ever heard for the marches of the USA Services. So, even if the two sections are very different, you may buy this CD if you have never listened the Sousa marches; it will give you the opportunity to hear them. After that, if you wish to buy a high quality CD of Sousa Marches, continue to shop on Amazon.
A Bit TOO "Budget Buy" For Sousa.......2004-05-16
I have become quite the Sousa fan in the past year. While my ear for classical music is that of a casual fanboy and not a seasoned classical music critic, I have become particular in my Sousa preferences, and this particular release left me cold. The pace of the marches on this CD are sluggish, and sounds tinny even to a listener with a tin ear.
John Philip Sousa marches are just too good and lively to settle for a budget release like this. A good release like those by "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band series is a better place to start your Sousa collection!

Album Description
This is dark instrumental surf music. Reminiscent of classic surf artists, Dick Dale & the Del-Tones and The Ventures but with a darker modern twist. Murder On Beaver Street shifts between different styles within the surf genre. For example, the fast picking style of Dick Dale, the spaghetti western feel of Ennio Morricone, and the primitive rock and roll style of Link Wray.
Customer Reviews:
Pay No Attention To The Song Titles!.......2005-09-03
Overall this is well-played instrumental surf music of a gentle nature. I have no idea where the group came up with song titles like "The Mummy's Curse," "Shallow Grave," or "Death, Death, Death." There is nothing eerie or ominous about any of it. In fact this CD could be played in the background of a quiet get-together with friends and set a very nice ambience. It is worth owning but don't buy it expecting music in the "horror surf" genre.
AWESOME!!!.......2004-06-08
This CD is great. If you are looking for a different type of music other than the same old pop music out these days, pick up this CD!!! You can feel the soul in the instruments these guys play and you WILL be caught dancing or jumping around!!! This is the best surf I have heard!!!

Fabulous American Church Music.......2001-10-25
Amy Beach had a fine touch with sacred music, as heard here. 'Jesus, My Savior' is a beautiful piano/voice duet that should be in every church soloist's repertory. Her 'Service in A' rates serious consideration as one of the finest American oratorio-sized works from the 20th century, eclipsed only by Bernstein's 'Chichester Psalms' and Lauridsen's 'Lux Aeterna'.
Mr. Strimple's anthems 'Two from Isaiah' and 'Let This Mind Be In You' are exquisite examples of this art. Brilliantly voiced and solidly musical, they stand with some of the finer English anthems of the early 20th century in texture and concept.

Album Description
A live recording from the beach resort of Crystal Beach, Texas. Recorded on Labor Day weekend, 2002, the album features the "live" sound of the band inter-acting with a very rowdy, very drunk, crowd of beach-loving, beach-music fans. This is a "party" album, full of in-between song banter, and plenty of crowd participation. This album is perfect for playing at your pool party, crawfish boil, or other fun gathering of party people.
Customer Reviews:
A great CD!.......2004-05-25
This CD, "Reef Madness", is one of the liveliest, fun albums I've heard in a while. It reminds me a lot of Jimmy Buffett's, "You Had to be There" CD from 1979. The band Hanna's Reef performs several of their own original songs here, as well as a few Buffett cover tunes. Their original music, is catchy, and every bit as good as the cover songs that are on the album.
As for the review directly before this one, I don't think that guy has even heard this CD. He couldn't have. First of all, he mentions that the band Hanna's Reef sounds like a garage band trying to play Buffett. Well, there's not a whole lot of Buffett here, and what they do cover is excellent. I've heard that another band out there called "Key West-the Band" used to be comprised of several of the members of Hanna's Reef. Rumor has it that KWTB is so childish that they write reviews of Hanna's Reef CD's, (anonymously)and put down their album. I don't know if that's true or not, but I don't see how anyone would rate this album a 1, on a scale of 1-5. For the record, I do have a copy of the one CD from Key West-the Band that is available here on amazon, called "Americana". It's really hard to review, since almost all of the songs on it are cover tunes. Why put out an album to sell to the public, if it's mainly just remakes of songs by other artists?
Regardless, this is my review of the Hanna's Reef album, so I'll not digress again. This CD has some great tropical stuff on it, including my favorite track, "Beach People, Beach Music". An equally fun song is "Let the Good Times Roll", with a great Cajun beat to it. And the cover of Buffett's "One Particular Harbor" is the best I've heard by anyone other than the Coral Reefer Band. I saw these guys live at the Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores in 2002. They were as good live (and in person) as they are on this album!
THIS MUSIC SUCKS.......2004-04-21
THE WORST CD I'VE EVER BOUGHT.
I BOUGHT THIS CD BASED ON ALL OF THESE RAVING REVIEWS THAT YOU'LL READ BELOW.
I TRIED TO DOWNLOAD THE MP3 SAMPLES, BUT PROBLEMS WITH HARDWARE/SOFTWARE/AMAZON/AOL OR ALL OF THE ABOVE KEPT ME FROM FROM SAMPLING THIS PURCHASE.
IT WAS VERY DISAPPOINTING.
SOUNDS LIKE MY SONS GARAGE BAND TRYING TO PLAY BUFFETT SONGS.
A fun album!.......2004-02-04
This album is like having a party in your CD player! It is a live CD, recorded at some "beach bar" in Texas. I had never heard of this band, Hanna's Reef, until a recent trip to New Orleans, for a party there. These guys were awesome. They have great original material, and their covers of Jimmy Buffett songs are the best I've ever heard.
If you are in the mood for a fun album, this fits the ticket. About the only "serious" song on here is "Sunday Morning in New Orleans". It is excellent. And so is the rest of the album.
What was that guy thinking?.......2004-01-26
I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but after reading the one before this one, I just had to. I bought a copy of this album, "Reef Madness", and frankly, I am very pleased with it. I heard Hanna's Reef in Key West, Florida last November, when they played at the Meeting of the Minds party down there. I was so impressed with their live show that I bought a copy of their album. They do an excellent job on the 4 cover tunes thay have here on the album. But more than that, their original songs are extremely good. They really seem to have captured the "Texas beach sound" that they talk about in the liner notes.
As for their claim that they are the original members of "Key West - the band", I only have one comment. I saw Key West the band years ago in Pensacola, and it seems like these guys actually are exactly the same ones that were onstage with the band then. Ironically, when I recently saw the band Key West (in Key West, Florida), I didn't recognize a single member except the bass player. I don't really know what's going on with that situation, but frankly, I don't care. I really like this album from Hanna's Reef, and I can't wait to hear their new material.
As for the current ensemble of Key West the band, I don't really care for them too much. They play a lot heavier music now, and they all look like they just got out of jail. I think I'll pass on them...next time.
typical Buffet cover band dribble.......2003-09-26
This group bills it's self as the original Key West the Band so I tried it out because I like that group.
No contest!
If I were Key West the Band I would sue for misrepresentation!
I tried listening to this music but it was tough to make it all the way thru.Bad, clique lyrics and songs. The singer is good but can't make up for the horrible songs and grainy recording techniques.
Maybe next time -- but I doubt it.

A favorite for 30 years.......2006-10-05

Proof that American songs can be great.......2002-07-05
I have had the lp issue of this album for many years and have enjoyed it more with each encounter. The songs by Duke, Bowles, Citkowitz, Chanler, and Copland are based on some familiar poems, but the songs are not, themselves, well-known. I particularly have liked the witty and memorable Duke settings of E.A. Robinson's "Luke Havergal" and "Miniver Cheevy," but the real musical highlight of the disc would probably be the settings of James Joyce's "Chamber Music" by Israel Citkowitz. Donald Gramm is in fine voice for his selections and Bethany Beardslee proves again her legendary status as an interpreter of all kinds of modern music. It is definitely a good thing that this has been reissued on CD and I hope it will reach a wide audience.

Album Description
"Sky Blues" is the new CD from the Sauce Boss. This is not your "crying in your beer" kind of blues. "Sky Blues" is up
way up. Blues for the beach from the Florida-based Gumbo Man. Full of energy and good vibes, like the legendary live shows by the Sauce Boss, this CD was shot from the hip with mostly first takes and few overdubs. 12 new originals from the Sauce Boss and a cover from Robert Johnson "Come on in My Kitchen" and one from John Martyn--the prophetic "Don't Want to Know". It's as close to "live" as you get in the studio. Salt water blues from the dude with the hot sauce.
