This recording (Arabesque Z6561) is one of three CD recordings of Victor Herbert's music by Don Hunsberger and the Eastman School of music produced in the early 1980's. (The others are Arabesque Z6529 and Z6547) All are superbly recorded using the original orchestra arrangements from a composer who was gifted in the art of orchestration. We get a sampling of marches, selections from operettas, humor songs, and a selection from his opera Natoma. Teresa Ringholt sings with the orchestra on a few songs and her sweet soprano voice is perfect for the part. We need more of Victor Herbert's beautiful music to be discovered and performed in the way Herbert intended it to be performed. The authenic Victor Herbert may be the next discovery in the same way the authenic Scott Joplin has been discovered by the public.

I was sorely disappointed...the entire CD is littered with commentary about the music by the English horn player. While the information she provides is potentially interesting to some listeners, I was wanting a music selection of dedicated English horn music. I found the (lengthy) verbal excerpts distracting and irritating to the point that I never listened to the CD again after it's initial run.

The music is great, though, when it's actually playing, despite the fact that you don't get the entire piece...

      If you're a Notre Dame alum, fan, or just from the midwest U.S., you may find some nostalgia in this recording of the Notre Dame Glee Club under the direction of Daniel Stowe. Unfortunately, the performances are under-energized, lackluster, and uninspiring. In addition, the performances are beleagured with serious intonation problems throughout.

      Despite a few interesting arrangements and patriotic salutes to Notre Dame, the CD is boring and rather lifeless. Look further if you're wanting a rousing men's choir recording.

        Album Description

        The Morning Of hails from Newburgh, NY where they humbly began playing any and every show they could. They quickly built up a rabid and loyal fanbase through regional touring. Their previous EP was then independently released and to date has sold over 1,500 copies in just a little less than a year. No small feat considering the band has up until just recently solely toured the Northeast. The band's presence on Purevolume.com attributed immensely to their popularity as they garnered upward of half a million plays through word of mouth alone.
