A long overdue collection by one of the English masters of the clarinet........2007-01-05

The Yorkshireman Reg Kell became famous for using vibrato in the classical world when it was unfashionable. He used it tastefully, and other artists such as Jack Brymer and Emma Johnson have continued to use it. He also had a series of tutorials with Benny Goodman (for Goodman's benefit) which led to Goodman changing his embouchure from the upper teeth on mouthpiece to the upper lip - as well as lower, -on mouthpiece, which perhaps in Goodmans's case was not a good move, as he had it right the first time!.

However these recordings originally came out a very long time ago in the early days of vinyl, and a re-issue is long overdue. Kell's excursion in to light music is interesting, though he stops well short of anything resembling jazz, although he had earlier recorded one record with Bert Ambrose's band in the 1940 which was the nearest he got, - but that is not included here. His main forte is in the works of Mozart, Weber, Beethoven and Brahms, but he also plays Bartok and Templeton. It shows what an accomplished performer he was. All were recorded after he left the UK to live and play in America.

This set shows his rightful place as a performer in the history of clarinet playing. He had raised the standard of the time, and had the benefits of improved recording techniques and length of play boudaries were removed with the LP record.

My only negative comment is that he rushes some of the runs; everything else is great!

This compilation brings more exquisite tango music sung by the greatest tango singer of all times.

Gardel voice is brought to life in this recordings thanks to nimbus records superb technology, music played by gardel guitarrist sound clear and more detailed than previous compilations.

This album as well as Vol.1 is a must for every Gardel lover or music enthusiast, you won't regret this album if yopu are an early opera singer lover.

Gardel is a natural baritone with perfect intonation, musicality and sense for drama and passion, you will be impress even if you don't speak spanish.

If you dig the "Macarena" or Gipsy Kings, you'll appreciate the Catalan rumba of Pierre Peret. In the late 1960s he rocked Europe with a flamenco fusion that earned him the moniker "the Elvis Presley of Spain." He innovated a guitar technique called el ventilador (the electric fan) that brought him tremendous success, but in the late 1970s he dropped out of the music scene for religious reasons. It wasn't until he was coaxed out of retirement to perform at the closing ceremonies of the 1992 Olympics that he began to reinvent himself. Now the transformation is complete with Rey de la Rumba (King of the Rumba), a dance-floor explosion of fiery rumba flamenca and gypsy pop. While Peret could have called on contemporaries like Julio Iglesias, Raphael, and Rocio Durcal for his comeback, he instead grabbed a whole new generation of collaborators like David Byrne ("Si Fulano"), Sergent Garcia ("El Muerto Vivo"), and El Gran Silencio ("Borriquito"). This CD is a real treat for people who like world music simmered with plenty of Spanish flavor. Peret emerges after a haitus to create a rocking, froliking musical stew that employs the use of a different international artist on each and every cut, count em, 15 cuts, 15 artists. The styles are as varied as the artists who guest appear. Eclectic would be an understatement. Let's put it this way, David Bryne is one of the guests alongside El Gran Silencio, Jarabe de Palo and Sergent Garcia. There are enough Spanish artists to keep it true to the rumba most of the time but there are forays into other areas like mambo, cumbia, salsa,jazz, bossa nova, rap, electronica and pop flamenco. If you like the Gipsy Kings this will suit you well as they owe much of their successful style to Peret and his rumba. Each and every song is very different in style and as mentioned in guest artist appearance. Check it out there are some excellent guests here. One might think that with such variety that it might not work but it does, in fact quite well as the glue that holds it all together is Peret with his vocals and infusion of energy as he interacts beautifully with everyone. It is clearly evident that a good time was had by all as the interplay comes across like a fiesta in the studio.There is only weak track on the CD and that is only the vocals by former frontman of Talking Heads David Bryne as he interjects his translations unnecessarily for "Si Fulano." Otherwise it is a masterpiece of world music as an aging Peret displays his vitality and shows he's not ready for the lounge act circuit as he mixes in with more modern sounds and artists quite well. My faves are his coupling with Jarabe de Palo as they soulfully sing "El lunar de Maria", the wacky "Espreferible" coupled with Tomino Carotone and Mistretta on various reeds and organ as they sing it is better to laugh and be happy than sad and cry, his classic "Lo Mato" reinterpreted in duo fashion with Estopa as they perform a raucous rumba, the fun song "Que Suerte" as he performs with Amparonia as they go back and forth on how lucky that they will seeing each other tonight, "Borriquito" the nice rendering by Mexico's El Gran Silencio that adds a little ragamuffin cumbia flavor to the mix and both songs coupled with Disminguet as they add more Iberian flavor to the mix with "El Mig Amic" and the authentic "Yo soy el rumba." The vocals by Peret are first rate and he leaves the listener understanding fully he is El Rey de los Rumberos. Not to be missed for world music lovers, this is a musical mix that displays old and new styles to create something innovative. Ritmo de Espana para todo el mundo!
