"A great debut that marks Maas as a new talent to watch"

Product Description
Diversity and freeness of thought clearly resonates on Multi-Panel’s debut for Unschooled Records, Alone in the Field. Like Four Tet, Multi-Panel is primarily concerned with making music that is structured, crisp, and melodic, yet with a distinct subtlety and intelligence all his own. Though his work is often branded as ‘laptop folk’, that simplicity is almost misleading: an ocean is not a big lake, nor is a flower a small tree. Both are something all their own. And so is Multi-Panel. This is not yet another example of soulless electronica being tinged with wholesome bits of real instrumentation. Alone in the Field is a collection of carefully cultivated songs with strongly organic roots accented by bright blooms of a digital hue.

Alone in the Field

Alone in the Field,Multi-Panel,Unschooled Records,Serves as an interface between the analog and digital worlds, dividing time between acoustic guitar and samples; between solitary thought and making real music.

Dimitri Hvorostovsky, born and bred in Siberia, has Russian folk music in his soul. So do about 100 million other Russians, of course, but they don't have his magnificent voice. When his artistry is joined with that of the Saint Petersburg Chamber Chorus, the result is hard to beat, especially when the arrangements were made by such composers as Shostakovich and Rimsky-Korsakov. Don't expect happy songs, although some of the offerings on this disc, such as the title song "Kalinka," have their rollicking passages. In characteristic fashion, the lyrics dwell plaintively on laments for lost love or melancholy recollections of the Russian countryside. Unusually for a Russian chorus, the Saint Petersburg ensemble is not dominated by the lower-pitched male voices but by the women, blissfully free from stridency, who swell their cadences in the way so typical of Russian liturgical music. The disc is accompanied by the Russian text and a useful English translation, although both suffer from minor errors. --Ed Killham

5 out of 5 stars Delighful Hvorostovsy.......2007-03-31

I heard the CD Kalinka. I've never stopped admiring this wonderful Russian bsritone. I went to his concerto here in Mexico, several months ago. I was in Heaven

The songs are chosen with care and love, and it reminds me always of my so wonderful stay in Russia (3 years). This really is from "Russia with love". The thrilling voice of Hvorostovsky gives me the chills and makes me dream. Thanks for a wonderful and delightful record.

This Cd is not the "academic" version of the Red Army, pleasant as well. This is fresh, bucolic and belongs to the people that are in the enourmous fields of corn in Russia and Ukraine. It is naive, with the beauty of naivite.

Hvorostovky is versatile and in the songs que needs to be sweet, plassionate or melancholic he achieves it masterly!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Power of Voice, The Music for the Soul .......2005-05-09

Listening to these eighteen Russian folk songs, artistically arranged and vocalized, one feels that the musical border between folksong and opera has somehow been melted away, and what are heard are the best aspects of both. There is something very special in Russian folk music. Dmitri Hvorostovsky and St Petersburg Chamber Choir have grasped the spirit of it with their heartbreaking vocal force. Whether it is the melancholy melodies; the somber harmonies; or the primordial elements, they pierce directly through your heart and get to your soul... Simply wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars a cup half full, but still splendid.......2004-05-22

With his rich and powerful dark honey voice, Dmitri Hvorostovsky is one of the greatest operatic baritones alive, and as an interpreter of Russian music, no singer can top him; his exquisite renditions of folk melodies, as well as the rapturous songs of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff on his other recordings are sublime.
Here he is backed not by an orchestra, but by St. Petersburg Chamber Choir, and together they present a superb collection of traditional melodies.

Unfortunately for those of us who are big Dmitri fans, he only sings on 10 of the 18 tracks, and though the chorus is excellent, his magnificent voice would have made these songs even better; the "chorus only" tracks are 4-5, 8-10, 14, and 16-17.
The popular title track, "Kalinka", has probably been included in practically every film with a Russian theme I have ever seen and is instantly recognizable, and some of the others are rare gems, but all of them will be enjoyed by anyone who appreciates Russian music.

My absolute favorite is the final "Vihaztu adin ya na darogu" ("I set off alone down the road"), which with its beautiful melody and soulful singing is glorious. Dmitri recorded this song for his first CD of folk songs in 1991, with the Ossipov Russian Folk Orchestra, with balalaikas instead of a chorus to back him; both versions are wonderful, but with this one having the edge, as I think he sings it on this recording with more emotion.
Total running time is 56'41.

5 out of 5 stars Here is proof that Russian vintage only gets better with age.......1999-06-06

Dmitri Hvorostovsky has outdone himself, which means his admirers are in for a treat. Maturity only adds depth to his interpretations of Russian folk songs, now on a larger scale than on the earlier CD 'Dark Eyes'. His musicianship is such that he blends in perfectly with the superb St. Petersburg Chamber Choir whenever this is called for. Marvelous stuff here - highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-05-14

Worth congratulating Philips that here (as in several more recent releases) "Russian Text" really means that, in cyrillic not transliteration. Timing 56'40.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss it!.......2004-03-31

Ewa Podles' voice is incredibly rich, her technic is astonishing and she sings so expressively that really brings tears in my eyes. She is definitely a diva and performs these wonderful pieces the way they should be performed. The booklet includes libretto with English translation, which is very helpful for those who don't speak Russian. However, the music and the performance are so emotive that can touch you even if you do't know the words.

5 out of 5 stars Delectable!.......2003-01-15

This disc is altogether delectable. With few exceptions, Russian opera is little known or appreciated in this country. Perhaps, if it always had interpreters as stupendously capable as Ewa Podles, the story might be different. She is a true contralto, and, as such, more than capable of bringing appropriate power, flexibility and idiomatic darkness to these largely unfamiliar arias. Even more impressively, she uses her magnificent talent to get inside the character of each piece. The result is a virtuoso variety of texture. The sumptuous richness of her sound makes even the finest counter-tenors seem rather thin-voiced. Do not let the unfamiliarity of most of the pieces put you off. Full translations are provided, with the Russian being helpfully rendered in Roman letters. So, let this superrb and thrilling singer introduce you to some very fine music.

5 out of 5 stars TODO LO QUE ELLA CANTE ESTÁ BIEN.......2002-09-07

5 out of 5 stars She's back!.......2002-07-01

The first time I heard Ewa Podles was in a live performance of Verdi's "Requiem". After that I've been buying all her records and trying to hear her live. I still don't understand how she is still ignored by the major record companies...
This CD of russian arias could not be rated less than extraordinary: if the voice itself wasn't enough - and it is more than enough - the interpretation would.

5 out of 5 stars Indescribably beautiful music, superlative performances........2005-09-06

This CD was hard to find. After a few months of searching, I decided to buy `gently used.' But I am not sorry at all. I very much wanted to hear more of Sviridov's music, having absorbed the thrilling Petersburg song cycle, also performed by these two extraordinary musicians.

Let me say first that Sviridov's music truly drives both performances. Long a fan of pianist Mikhail Arkadiev, I was surprised by what I heard. His playing is always superb, but on this CD, he is beyond inspired.

This sentiment goes double for Dmitri Hvorostovsky, whose interpretation of Russia Cast Adrift has been criticized in the past. I was very moved by his work here. His artistry is always amazing, but the depth of his interpretation is such that I can barely explain how or what I feel when I listen to it. His voice is superb, his performance flawless, his talent seemingly without boundary. An original, unique, and singular vocalist.

If you can find this CD, buy it at any cost. Otherwise, you will be missing out on something very special indeed.

    5 out of 5 stars One of Hvorostovsky's best.......2004-12-15

Hvorostovsky is in terrific form here, bringing a compelling intensity to these often-anguished Sviridov songs. While many music lovers may initially be drawn to the more accessible Rachmaninov songs, it's the Sviridov cycle that ultimately stands out here. Enhanced by Hvorostovsky's dark timbre and sensitive phrasing, songs such as The Owl and the riveting Milky Way emerge as profoundly haunting miniature masterpieces. Shortly after this recording was made, the octogenarian Sviridov (1915-1998) would write another song cycle - this time expressly for the great Hvorostovsky: the equally memorable Petersburg - a Vocal Poem, released on the Delos label in 2004.

5 out of 5 stars Come for the Rachmaninov and stay for the Sviridov!.......1999-06-06

The world of music should be grateful that the late Georgi Sviridov found such an invincible champion for his stunning and yet accessible song cycles. Even with uncharted repertoire Hvorostovsky does a painstaking job and never disappoints the listener. Mikhail Arkadiev works magic with the often episodic piano accompaniments, which sound by no means easy. Of course the Rachmaninov is very nice, like a refreshing salad before a scrumptious main course. But the Sviridov deserves a wide audience. It is to be hoped as of this posting that his cycle 'Petersburg' (a foundation stone of Hvorostovsky's latest recital tour program) will also be recorded in its entirety.

5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

2 out of 5 stars Skampa Quartet is great - the singer... yikes.......2005-07-28

I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

      Album Description

Diversity and freeness of thought clearly resonates on Multi-Panel's debut for Unschooled Records, Alone in the Field. Like Four Tet, Multi-Panel is primarily concerned with making music that is structured, crisp, and melodic, yet with a distinct subtlety and intelligence all his own. Though his work is often branded as `laptop folk', that simplicity is almost misleading: an ocean is not a big lake, nor is a flower a small tree. Both are something all their own. And so is Multi-Panel. This is not yet another example of soulless electronica being tinged with wholesome bits of real instrumentation. Alone in the Field is a collection of carefully cultivated songs with strongly organic roots accented by bright blooms of a digital hue.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Guitar Shorty 1.......2005-03-13

First, let's get one thing straight: This can't be that U.S. west-coast based Guitar Shorty, who regularly flabbergasted club audiences in the 80s and 90s with onstage frontflips, backflips and flights of humor and fancy while never missing a note, and who deserves your record-buying dollar not because he may still do somersaults (by now, against doctor's orders), but because he's still a great performer and musician. Any festival is made more fun by that Guitar Shorty's presence.

This Guitar Shorty (I'll call him Guitar Shorty 1) plays an acoustic guitar - maybe a bit like Bill Broonzy. Though I can't find much info on him (why hasn't some knowledgeable cb person reviewed this yet?), it's apparent that the tunes have been re-released, with a somewhat double entendre title (unless maybe it came from the way this Guitar Shorty may have been discovered...).

That aside, listen to the cuts and you'll find a robust and unique-sounding songster. His sound reminds me of gut-bucket-defining, underpublicized John Lee Granderson, with some Lightnin' Hopkins phrasing and some Pink Anderson-type vocalese. Sounds like this Guitar Shorty was was recorded in the 60s, or maybe even the 70s (probably the 50s!).

I give this recording 5 stars because it's unique - and because it's new to me. After a few more times listening, it'll still probably rate quite high, because the way this Guitar Shorty puts together soulful and rollicking with old-style and "modern" vocal phrasing is fun to hear and still unique.
