Customer Reviews:
So easy to listen to.......2007-07-03
I'm new to Don Edwards but I'm going to be buying up all of his available catalogue. This is the kind of music to listen to when you just want to relax. He has a handsome voice and his songs are traditional folk and western. He is a good yodeler. This disc seems to be less gunfighter ballads/western songs than others he's recorded and more folk and Jimmie Rodgers type material. It opens up with a great rendition of My Blue Heaven. His voice is reminiscent of Marty Robbins. Good liner notes with brief descriptions of each song. Highly recommended for traditional country music lovers! So easy to listen to!
GREAT!.......2007-02-07
As a Don Edwards fan, I'm obviously biased. Having met & talked with Don only strengthens my bias. He's the real deal & his music is true. This is NOT country western. This is classic cowboy music as only Don Edwards can perform it.

Best of the Hildegard recordings so far.......2007-01-13
I own nearly all of the recordings of Hildegard von Bingen's work, some on LP, CD, and SACD. Origin of Fire has rapidly become my favorite. First, it contains some of her best (to my ears) works. Second, the performance is top notch - flawless, involved singing. Third, the SACD layer (sorry, have not listened to the red book layer yet) is fabulous. Bottom line: I never get tired of listening to it. Yesterday, it came up as the next disc in the 5 I had loaded in my player, right after some nice mellow Bill Evans. It stopped me in my tracks: I sighed and noticably relaxed. If Hildegard is your cup of tea, this particular cup is extremely tasty.

Album Description
Although he lived most of his life in Nashville, Marty never left the west behind. He proved that he could masterfully reinterpret classic western ballads, as well as write new ones every bit as good as the old ones. His western recordings for both Columbia and MCA are complete here, spanning the years 1958-1979. The set starts with The Hanging Tree, then encompasses the best-selling Gunfighter Ballads albums that included such classic tracks as El Paso, Big Iron, Tonight Carmen, Mister Shorty, and The Cowboy In The Continental Suit, as well as the El Paso sequels like Feleena From El Paso and El Paso City. Marty mixed self-composed epics with many of the greatest vintage western songs to create a tapestry of music that powerfully evokes the old west and the west in transition.
Customer Reviews:
You have to buy this!.......2006-06-11
I was a little put off by the price, but it is worth every penny. 5 stars are not enough. The booklet with the lyrics to all of the songs is excellent. You will note a few of the tunes like El Paso and San Angelo appear a couple of times. Different versions were brought out at different times. They're all here!!!! Wish
Devil Woman would have been included though.
Hours of Listening Bliss.......2003-06-01
I bought this box set several years ago, listened to it a couple of times, then put it on the shelf where it sat waiting to be played occasionally. Today I dusted it off and played it from beginning to end while catching up on paperwork.
What a bunch of great songs! Native Arizonan Robbins really is at his best when singing songs of the old west, his golden voice being perfectly suited to the genre. I am not sure if "all" of Marty's western songs are contained in this four CD set, but it must be substantially complete. There are songs of love, songs of good vs. evil, spiritual songs, and songs that glorify the simple life and the beauty of the wide open spaces. There are songs that nod to the Spanish/Mexican heritage of the Southwest and others that sing the praises of the cowboy and the gringo interloper who came to conquer and tame a wild and beautiful land. Perhaps the only song that doesn't really fit the theme of the set is the last song on the last CD, Shotgun Rider.
Now, on any project of this magnitude, there are bound to be a few dogs like the song just mentioned and a few songs that are merely weak. Marty had a tendency to go back to El Paso for inspiration, it was after all his greatest hit. And the listener will notice that on perhaps a half dozen songs. But beyond that, the purchase of this box set will buy you many hours of listening bliss.
Wonderfull country songs.......2002-03-24
This is an excellent collection. Most of the famous country songs by Marty. His voice backed on wonderfull guitars and chorus is really something you cannot miss. I enjoy this album a lot.
Every Marty Robbins cowboy song in one box........2000-04-18
Marty Robbins had a remarkably varied career, singing everything from mainstream country to Hawaiian music with equal aplomb. His most engaging work, however, was with Western music. Whether writing his own material or interpreting traditional favorites and contemporary classics, Marty was clearly at home on the range. Now, Bear Family has gathered every western song Marty ever cut into one terrific box set. The price tag may be a bit off-putting to casual fans, but anyone who has worn out a copy of Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs will be delighted to find that almost every track on each of the four CDs included here is of that same high quality. More importantly, this set is the only way to get the majority of these tracks. Once you do get them, you almost assuredly will not regret having spent the extra dough.

Haunting.......2007-01-05
First of all, I'm not one of those who believes Roddy's early work was his best. In fact, I consider later work such as "Frestonia" and "Dreamland" among his best. "Western Skies", however, even outshines these. From the hauntingly beautiful opening title track, this CD demands you sit up and listen to Roddy's emotive voice, poetic lyrics, and vituoso guitar playing. It's a shame he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves. When I went to a local US Virgin Megastore looking for this CD, after spelling the name to the clerk, he reported he didn't have it, and most of his stuff was "out of print". Oh well. On the other hand I kind of enjoy having this as my very own personal music. But do yourself a favor and buy this CD. If you're not captivated by it like I was, I can't help you.
ALWAYS SURPRISING RODDY!.......2006-07-28
lOVED AZTEC CAMERA SINCE THE '80.THIS NEW ALBUM IS POSITIVE, MATURE AND SIMPLY SURPRISING.HOPE TO SEE RODDY LIVE AGAIN (GREAT EXPERIENCE...HIS VOICE CAN GIVE SO MANY EMOTIONS!)MAYBE IN ITALY THIS TIME.
THANKS RODDY FOR YOUR MUSIC AND FOR YOUR LATEST SONGS AND LYRICS.
LOVE SO MUCH ".. IF LIFE COULD TASTE THAT GOOD AGAIN I SWEAR I'LL NEVER COMPLAIN.."

Western Skies.......2006-07-04
Let me just start by saying that I have been a Roddy Frame fan since the release of his first CD back in 1983, "High land, Hard rain." It was a new sound, it was fresh and I just loved Roddy Frame's playful guitar work. The sound and feeling of the music was almost electric and the excitement in his voice was as if he had something to shout about. Ever since then I have collected every Aztec Camera album, single, extended version, b-side and collectible available. However I am completely disappointed with his last two efforts, "Surf" and especially, "Western Skies." It doesn't sound like he has anything to shout about anymore. He sounds uninspired and almost bored at times. If you are a fan of Roddy Frame you should definitely do yourself a favor and instead of buying, "Western Skies" get your self a copy of Aztec Camera's greatest hits instead. You'll be happy you did.
Simply the Best!!! Buy this and ALL of Roddy's Albums!.......2006-05-28
I have listened to Roddy Frame's music since 1983 when Aztec Camera's High Land, Hard Rain came out. He is an amazing singer/songwriter/guitarist. There has always been an amazing depth to his music, even when he was just a teenager starting out. He has matured over the years and so has his music. Like another reviewer said, He just keeps getting better and better. If there is anyone who deserves to have success it is Roddy Frame. Buy this album, buy all of his albums! You will not be disappointed.
gets better and better.......2006-05-26
best of 3 outstanding "solo" albums, North Star, Surf and now Western skies. Songs such as Bowie tribute "Rock god" and the best song that Roddy has written "world in worlds" define this album as a classic. Roddy gets better as he gets older

Album Description
The Sons of the Pioneers are the definitive vocal and instrumental group in Western music history. They specialized in cowboy songs, setting the standard for every group that has come since. The greatest achievement of the Sons of the Pioneers lay with the sheer quality of their work. Their superb harmonies and brilliant arrangements have delighted three generations of listeners and inspired numerous performers.
This collection contains some of the earliest recorded performances by Roy Rogers when he was just embarking upon what would prove to be one of the most remarkable performing careers in American history, long before he was billed as King of the Cowboys and became one of the most recognizable public figures of the 20th century.
Roy continued to perform many of the songs contained in this collection throughout his long career, including "Cowboy's Night Herd Song."
Customer Reviews:
Great Songs By A Great Group.......2006-08-09
This CD has some great (original versions) by great performers. What more can we say about Roy Rogers and The Sons of the Pioneers? The song Sandman Lullaby stands out as one of the best on the CD. It has great harmony, yodeling and a Bob Nolan solo on it. I am glad that these songs are finally available on CD. Roy Rogers does some great singing and yodeling on this CD.
Fine mid-30s radio transcriptions of Western classics.......2005-06-13
Varese's latest collection of Sons' tunes mines some of their earliest recordings, waxed as radio transcriptions for KFWB, Los Angeles. These discs were syndicated to other radio stations, providing additional national exposure for the group's 78s on Decca. Their record label apparently endorsed this strategy, as the transcriptions were leased for radio play only, and thus didn't bite directly into record sales. These eighteen selections represent a good introduction to the nearly 300 song transcription archive (for fanatical depth, see Bear Family's "Songs of the Prairie" and "Memories of the Range" box sets).
What's particularly intriguing about these tracks is that they represent the Pioneers before their fame exploded. "Roy Rogers" was still in vocalist Leonard Slye's future, and the group's song selections ranged from Jimmie Rodgers' yodels to traditional spirituals. There's a pair of excellent Bob Nolan compositions here ("A Sandman Lullaby" and "I Still Do"), but not the ones later to become the group's icons. What's most startling is how polished and mature the group sounds, no doubt due to their tireless regimens of practice and two-a-day radio broadcasts.
This collection presents both the original quartet of Slye, Nolan, Spencer and Hugh Farr, and the subsequent quintet that added Farr's brother Karl to the group. Sound quality is excellent, and Jon Guyot Smith's liner notes are detailed and informative; a fine single-disc introduction to the Pioneers early radio work!

oh well.......2006-07-07
Would not have ordered the western songs as I don't like western songs, but wanted Christmas in High Fidelty enouogh to buy this CD. I will just skip over the western ones & play the Xmas ones. Wish his Music for Relaxation would be issued in CD form-the songs are wonderful & his renditions so beautiful. GKB
Terrible Combination!.......2004-05-09
Under Western Skies was a LP record that my family played until we truly wore it out. Great authentic western tunes in a soft - Sunday sorta style. It played well when Dad would load it with 7 other LP's by Michael LeGran, M. Gould, Eugene Ormandy, etc. We would have a couple of hours to read the Sunday paper and enjoy the family.
Now, I love Christmas. But Christmas and soft ''Western" have absolutely nothing in common! I understand how the companies want to jam several LP's together to save money...
But would YOU want the western tunes at Christmas? Or the Christmas tunes the rest of the year? No way does this work. What a shame.

Songs from the Mountain is an album of passionate restraint, befitting the Appalachian heritage it celebrates and the novel that inspired the collection. The story--which may itself pass into folk legend--is that fiddler Dirk Powell and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist extraordinaire Tim O'Brien were so taken with Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain that they decided to do a companion CD with banjoist John Herrmann. The result is a superior collection of traditional tunes that echo the book's imagery and action--from songs of rebellion and revelry such as "The Drunkard's Hiccups" to the keen longing embodied in "Wayfarin' Stranger" and "The Blackest Crow." The liner notes capitalize on the music's links to the novel and vice versa. But this CD's intimacy and immediacy will transport even those unfamiliar with Frazier's debut. --Kerry Fried
Customer Reviews:
Love This Mountain Music!.......2007-06-20
I am from the Appalachian foothills in eastern Kentucky, and love the mountains. The music on this CD reminds of music I heard while growing up in a small mining camp in the 1950s. The music is simple, raw, and emotional. It is the kind that you might have heard performed by a family or friends gathered on the porch at the end of a hard week's work. My favorite tunes are The Blackest Crow, Angel Band, When I Die I'll Live Again, Wayfarin' Stranger, and Bow Down. (My least favorite is Fair Margaret.) Several good instrumentals on here, as well.
Another Great CD By Tim O'Brien.......2007-05-05
This is a collection of old-time Appalachian/Mountain ballads. You will not find a bluegrass cut on this project. Tim O'Brien is an awesome performer of traditional music. I have seen him several times in concert. All songs are out-standing, and the two gospel numbers will bring shivers down your spine. (Especially Wayfaring Stranger-As close to true Appalachian singing that you will get-that high lonesome sound.)
BACK TO OUR MOTHER THE MOUNTAIN.......2006-06-19
Since my youth I have had an ear for roots music, whether I was conscious of that fact or not. The original of that interest first centered on the blues, then early rock and roll and later, with the folk revival of the early 1960's, folk music. I have often wondered about the source of this interest. I am, and have always been a city boy, and an Eastern city boy at that. Nevertheless, over time I have come to appreciate many more forms of roots music than in my youth. The subject of the following review is an example.
This is music that was performed, and meant to be performed for a live audience on Saturday night after a week's hard work, or early in the morning looking out over the mountain at nature's handiwork, or at any time to evoke the loneliness of the mountains and the hardness of life. And the music brings to life all those sentiments. Certainly this is music to entertain in a time before radio.
A note on subject matter- The bulk of the songs concern home, hearth lovesickness and religion as might be expected from mountain people. And that is okay. The following is something on the order of a discalimer I feel a need to mention. This reviewer, although not a religious man, can appreciate the simple, fundamentalist but very personal religion evoked here. Not to romanticize the simple rural folk of the past but I do not believe that the religious sentiments expressed here are the same as those of religious fundamentalists today.
Disappointed.......2006-05-30
I looked forward to this album as a number of my favorite songs were on it but I was disappointed that songs like "Hard Times" and "Lady Margaret" were not sung all the way to the end. Both left off about two thirds of the way through the song. I mean if you aren't going to sing the complete song, why bother?
Wonderful music.......2005-11-03
Wonderful music and extraordinary musicianship. Beautiful harmonies, make-ya-wanna-dance tunes, make-ya-wanna-harmonize along songs. Old songs beautifully rendered in voice and instruments. I have a lot of bluegrass and "traditional/roots" music and this is one of my favorites. Highly recommend

Customer Reviews:
Excellent album.......2005-07-16
In a fair world, Marty Brown would have achieved more success than he has. His CDs are all excellent, and "Wild Kentucky Skies," in particular, is outstanding. His voice and some of his songs might remind you of Hank Williams. Some of his more upbeat songs have a touch of Everly Brothers. Those comparisons are to give you an idea of his influences, but he is unique. I like all kinds of music, but it breaks my heart that this CD is no longer in production. It should be one of the top Alt-Country CDs.
awsome album.......2004-12-08
this is an awsome album i have loved listening to it ever since it came out. marty brown will always be one of favorite's of all time. he should be up there in the list with hank williams sr. george jones merle haggard and keith whitley to me i think he is that good. and i sure do need new songs from marty. where-ever you are, and if you read this please come back marty i miss your music. a fan always. kelly
