5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect.......2007-06-16

This is the best CD along with Donde Estan Los Ladrones that Shakira has ever produced. Every song is wonderful; there are no filler tracks just plain execptional music. Viva Shakira and Colombia!!!

5 out of 5 stars brilliant early work..........2007-05-11

...of the now international superstar....you don't need to know spanish to feel the sentiments of the songs, fall in love with the work nor admire the talents of this artist.

5 out of 5 stars NACE UNA ESTRELLA..........2007-05-06

5 out of 5 stars fantastic..........2007-03-16

Shakira has a wonderful emotion in this album. Her voice is just a joy to listen to, whether you speak Spanish or not. I loved the mix of various beats in her her music. It's hard to pick a favorite song from this album, but especially love Antologia and un Poco de Amor.

5 out of 5 stars Her 1st CD.......2007-01-11

I think this was her first CD. It came out before she was big in the English community. Me encanta esta CD!

Amazon.com essential recording

Disney's Snow White, the world's first animated musical feature (1937), is still a standard in the industry. Though 1930s recording technology was primitive by today's standards, the Disney music studios have always used the available technology to its fullest, and this recording still stands up. The mature but hauntingly childlike Adriana Caselotti as Snow White is a unique vocal presence, and the songs include "Whistle While You Work," "Heigh-Ho," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come." The score is nearly as great an accomplishment as the film itself. --John Sanchez

5 out of 5 stars The Churchill's are very talented persons........2007-02-13

When I was 6, I already had a very good sense of what is a fine music score. I'm 73 now and still loving that music.

5 out of 5 stars One Song.......2006-02-19

I bought this album almost especially for the piece of music entitled "Special Sort Of Death." It does sound creepy but that's what I loved about it. From I saw the film I was like I have to have that.

Anyway another reason for me purchasing this album was the main titles for the film I love the ochestration. My favourite song on this album would have to be One Song followed by with A Smile and a Song.

And number 5 (a piece of music) I can't remember what it's called but it is creepy too the part that has snow white running through the woods.

Someday my prince will come is nice too. Adriana's voice is a little high and annoying sometimes though. But it's still nice to listen to. I listen to this album alot it's very nice and I like to listen to the version of One Song that is played at the end of the movie.

4 out of 5 stars good soundtrack for halloween.......2005-07-14

first of all, i have seen the movie and the hag scares me very much. about the music,it's not good music for children because the orchestral moving creates dark suites. the other part of makin' pies is no exception. i listened to special sort of death on a site called mp3.com and the beginning is very disturbing almost, because it's when the queen appears as the old witch and she plots to destroy snow white
Queen:(laughing)it's not for you, it's for snow white
anyways, bye-bye

5 out of 5 stars REMasterpiece!.......2003-01-21

This soundtrack is a perfect compliment to the film, and It's gloriously remastered to make you feel you are still watching and not just listening to the music from the movie itself.

In the liner notes I read the original soundtrack only consisted of five songs, the five songs we hear sung in the film. "One song/I'm Wishing", "Hi Ho", "The Yodeling Song", "Some day my prince will come", and "Whistle while you work". Over the years, the instrumental musical score was thrown in to create a wonderful masterpiece of a soundtrack.

I highly recommend purchasing this. If you like the music from the movie, you will love this. After hearing this for the first time(I've now heard it at least 100, thanks to my 2 yr. old), the movie is brought out to be more of a musical adventure as well as a wonderful story to be told.
This is my son's favorite c.d., and he has so much fun dancing and singing along.

5 out of 5 stars A Magical, Delightful Soundtrack.......2002-10-07

This was the first of the newly remastered and expanded "Disney classic soundtracks" that I purchased for my collection, and it's still my favorite. How wonderful to have, not only the vocals from the old vinyl version ("I'm Wishing/One Song," "With a Smile and a Song," "Heigh-Ho," "Bluddle-Uddle-Um-Dum," "The Dwarfs' Yodel Song" (and if you don't want to get up and dance to it, there's something wrong with you!), and "Some Day My Prince Will Come"), but the background instrumentals from the track, never before available to the at-home audience. The "Queen Theme," the chilling "Far Into the Forest," and "I've Been Tricked" particularly bring scenes from the movie springing to mind. There are also two songtracks that were cut from the film print. If you're a Disney-lover, your collection must positively include this CD.

The title of Shakira's breakthrough 1996 album translates to "naked feet," which somehow captures the combination of playfulness and earnestness that marks the music. Recorded when she was 18, Pies Descalzos finds the Colombian singer-songwriter striving to find her own style. The disc moves through dance pop and dance-hall-lite before landing on a convincing-enough guitar-rock amalgam. It's a likable record, but Shakira seemed to acknowledge its weaknesses when she chose only one of its songs for inclusion on the later (and much superior) MTV Unplugged. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Shakira best picks in 1996!.......2006-08-01

This is the second Shakira CD I ever got and I must say that it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I got this becuase I wanted to see her one step before "Donde Estan Los Ladrones?". Although this may not have the vigor of her second album, it is still something to WOW this artist. Although it is hard to pick favorites with a CD I waited so long to own, I should say that I truly enjoy "Estoy Aqui","Vuelve","Pies Descalzos", and "Se Quiere, Se Mata" - some of which were released as singles. I love the the theme of each each song and the raw emotion with which she sings each. I just wish that she never had the crossover on her first American album, for which she will always be remembered. This was when Shakira was authentic and true to her roots, and it will forever be cherished as one of my favorite Shakira discs.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album She has Ever Done!.......2006-01-15

Back in the day where Shakira was real and had a unique style, I should know since in Colombia everyone has watched her since day one. I remember the first time I heard this wonderful album... It was like so personal, poetic, philosophical and UNIQUE... At this time Shakira was hardly known, she was not famous at all. But soon in Colombia her style was being recognized. I declare that the most artistic stage in Shakira was with this album. It really set her apart, now as you hear new albums of the modern Shakira.. You are like where is this girl I once had known or at least I thought I knew. Everything was fine even when DONDE ESTA LOS LADRONES came out, after that all her work in my opinion has been worthless, is like she has lost the person she once was, the typical Colombian girl dreamer... I mean she forgot her roots... You can see it in her songs... It's just sad... In Colombia she is remembered for PIES DESCALZOS album.. She is loved for it, now see for yourself and ask for Shakira.. They will say: We love old Shakira, this new one she is pretending to be in the past years, we dont know about and want nothing to do with it. I state that my favorite album of all times in general even including other artists is PIES DESCALZOS, you have to hear it attentively and relate to it, to truly understand it's meaning, that new songs just dont have it.

5 out of 5 stars La escencia de los comienzos de Shakira...!! .......2005-11-02

5 out of 5 stars Shakira Rocks!.......2005-10-22

This is my favorite album, not just Shakira's, in general, the only song I would say is not so good is "Pienso En Ti", but i like it too.
Each song is something perfect, the creative and perfectly written lyrics make it a masterpiece.
Song Rating:
1. Estoy Aquí: The first song, I love it, it's outstanding!Couldn't be better! 10/10
2. Antología: It's excellent, her voice is bright and perfect! 10/10
3. Un Poco De Amor: Good song with the participation of another person I personally don't know who is but is a marvelous song! 10/10
4. Quiero: It's way cool, Shakira's style, it's really great!
5. Te Necesito: Really cool! My favorite part: The Chorus, is so catchy and perfect!10/10
6. Te Espero Sentada: It's a good song! It's really cool! It's better 'cause when your listening it you have the expectation that after it comes "Pies Descalzos"!10/10
7. Pies Descalzos: Along with "Se Quiere...Se Mata" my favorite song, specially the cool and fun lyrics and her voice! The last part: "Saludar al vecino, acostarse a una hora..." it's my favorite, to sing it without breathing it's so hard. I love this song so much!
8. Vuelve: Cool song! Love the lyrics! So interesting! The music is sooo cool!
9. Pienso En Ti: It's a nice song (the one I like the least), but it's so slow so it gets boring, but I still hear it! It has the same thing that "Te Espero Sentada", you're waiting for "¿Dónde Estás Corazón?
10. ¿Dónde Estás Corazón?: An amazing song, really fun and has some fast parts like "Pies Descalzos", "Estoy Aquí" and "Se Quiere...Se Mata"(my favorite part of the songs!)and I love it!
11. Se Quiere...Se Mata: Along with "Pies Descalzos", my favorite song! What I specially love is the story, the lyrics, it's an interesting story, funny and a perfect closing song to the perfection that "Pies Descalzos, Sueños Blancos" represents!
First I had the audio cassette (tape) when it got out and I bought the CD when I tragicly lost the tape!
I'm glad I have it now and I never stop listenig to it!

4 out of 5 stars BAX AND WASS.......2005-08-09

It may have a bit to do with the recording, but I was struck very forcefully by how much better the fourth sonata here comes across than the third does. The texture of the piano writing in the fourth is much cleaner and clearer, and it shows the player's abilities in a much more favourable light. Ashley Wass is obviously a major new talent. He has a strong grasp of the idiom of this music and he knows how to hold it together; he can build a climax imposingly and he has a powerful and unforced forte, and it goes more or less without saying that his technical accomplishment is comprehensive. He also does not need me or anyone else to tell him that these days this kind of combination of talent, insight and professionalism seems to be the birthright of multitudes.

In time I expect that a more individual and distinctive personality will become apparent in his playing. Indeed I think I'm beginning to detect it already in his accounts of the fourth sonata and of the powerful Winter Waters, and it makes me keen to hear more from him. For now, I wonder whether he has quite realised just how difficult a piece like the third sonata is to bring off with complete success. The piano writing is often bottom-heavy and there is a great deal of chordal, arpeggio and trill/tremolando work in it. Even the slightest hint of unevenness in the touch is made unmercifully apparent, and what is needed is really superhuman control of the finger-pressure, the kind of command that we get from Michelangeli or Gould or Pollini. It also puts a high premium on ultra-skilful use of the pedal, and it could be that this young player would benefit from studying the work of Cziffra, an out-and-out master of that particular technique. That said, Wass seems to me to have the measure of the piece basically, and he is heard to greater advantage in the rest of the recital. The fourth sonata is a less portentous effort than the third and Wass gives it a suitably high-profile reading. The Water Music, Country Tune and `O Dame' variations are lighter stuff and again I was impressed by the idiomatic sense of the performances. In the Winter Waters Bax seems to me to rise to something approaching greatness, and although the piano style is in some ways similar to that in the third sonata I felt that this time Wass set his own stamp on the reading more successfully.

Bax's piano music has more to say to me than his enjoyable but slightly ersatz symphonic poems do. As musical statements the heavier pieces seem more personal to me, with less playing to a Tennyson-loving gallery. The liner-note finds echoes of Debussy and Scriabin in the earlier works (more Scriabin than Debussy I should say), and is wisely unwilling to commit itself regarding influences on the sharply different idiom of the fourth sonata. The Water Music is nothing like Handel's but started life as a ballet score, and is more popular and melodious in expression. The `O Dame' variations are a kind of English music that I always find slightly tedious, but the Country Tune is pleasant enough if not especially memorable.

We are used to some spectacular recorded quality nowadays, and the recording here is not exactly that, but it's very good in general. Whether it is quite right for the third sonata is questionable, but in that instance I suspect that Wass will refine his playing to some extent in later performances to make it recording-proof. The liner-note is really quite good, with some perceptive comments on the music as well as information on the composer. As on other occasions, I want to express appreciation to Naxos for their initiative and imagination in making such music available at moderate cost, and I welcome this new young star on the pianistic block with particular interest.

4 out of 5 stars The seduction of the keyboard.......2005-08-06

Like many composers of his time Bax was seduced by the resources of the modern grand piano - by the wealth of textures it can generate and the ease with which new harmonies are revealed by improvisation. It is not at all surprising that his first symphony started life as a piano sonata, since all his orchestral music was piano-inspired; it was imitating the piano that produced the inventiveness and originality of his orchestration. Too much of his music was generated by what sounded good on the piano rather than by a discriminating choice of means to achieve well defined ends. One of the main causes of the difference between his style and that of Vaughan Williams or Holst was that he was a pianist and they were not. Not surprisingly, then, his piano music is particularly revealing of his musical personality. The present CD is the second in a promised complete edition. It includes two of the composer's most haunting tragic utterances - Winter Waters and the Third Sonata -, and in the Fourth Sonata one of the most assured examples of his leaner, cleaner late style. Ashley Wass responds with rare sensitivity to Bax's wayward magic. The recording, notable for resonance rather than clarity, suits this music well.

4 out of 5 stars The Title Is Accurate........2002-02-21

I'll be honest - I mainly bought this CD for one song - the new recording of William Finn's "Unlikely Lovers" from Falsettos.

In fact, there is a sticker on the front of the Great Musicals CD which states the following - "Unlikely Lovers from Falsettos is new to CD."

This isn't really correct. This particular recording of that wonderful second act song is new, but the song itself was previously recorded and released on the original cast recording of Falsettoland many years ago. I have also read a review of another (unauthorised?) CD recording made in Michigan of Falsettoland.

Anyway, this new recording is so powerful and emotional, I'm glad I bought the CD.

Readers might be interested to know that the 2001 recording of U. Lovers was made at Joe's Pub in January - the same place where Finn's Infinite Joy was recorded.

To the best of my knowledge, U.L. wasn't performed in the live show. I believe this as in an interview, Finn stated that the only song from Falsettos they were to perform in Infinite Joy was The Baseball Game (wonderfully conveyed by Stephen DeRosa on the CD). Also, in this new recording of U.L., unlike the recordings on Infinite Joy, there isn't any audience reaction. I suspect that the cast made this recording before or after audience arrived.

Loved this new version. It's accompanied by a solo piano. Lewis Cleale has a more traditional male voice (light baritone?) than Michael Rupert's higher, head, some might say "character" sound. Both are more than pleasant on the ear.

Also, on this recording, there's an a cappella section towards the end of the song; on the lyrics "...let's pretend..." Quite affecting.

As for the rest of the album, well all the tracks are gems in one way or another. Particular favourites of mine include -

"Lady's Maid" from Titanic. With it's "up down up" three note/syllable melody structure (millionaire, constable, engineer) it is immediately catchy, and is a great example of an "I'm about to start a journey, so wish me luck as I go" type of show song.

"All The Wasted Time" from Parade. Loved the almost folk influenced sound and the soaring voices; including Carolee Carmello who is heard on Infinite Joy.

"New Music" from Ragtime. It 'builds' beautifully and is a great example of the work of a contemporary song writing team - the highly talented Flaherty and Ahrens.

I suppose the thing is, that many musical theatre buffs will already have many of these songs on CD. However, you many not have THESE recordings - e.g. - the "If You Could See Her" from Cabaret is from the 1998 version, the "Do-Re-Mi" from (what else?) The S.O.M. is the 1998 recording.

If one was being picky, the following points might be made -

For a CD celebrating RCA's 100th anniversary, this collection is somewhat 'top heavy' - 9 of the 14 tracks - almost 65% were recorded in 1992 or later.

Also -

With a number of the American based performers, even when they are portraying non-Americans, their native accent is still recognisable. This is particularly noticeable on track 14 - "Do-Re-Mi" ("...Here, I'll make it easier for you...") and, to a lesser extent; track 2 - "Prologue - Tradition" from Fiddler ("...trying to scratch out a pleasant simple tune...")

But when one is dealing with material and performances of this level, such points are minor quibbles.

All in all, a very fine CD which has made a welcome addition to my collection.

This disc recycles two different but complementary LP recordings, the first being a 1968 outing with the Gregg Smith Singers, the New York Brass and Percussion Ensemble, and organist E. Power Biggs, the second being a 1965 recording with André Kostelanetz and his Orchestra. Though the repertoire for both is fairly traditional carols, they make for strange listening now. The Gregg Smith Singers selections are often straightforward, except when Biggs's gimmicky organ intervenes with all sorts of effects that are deployed with the artistry of Fourth of July fireworks. Did we ever mistake Biggs for a musician? Kostelanetz's ultra-busy orchestrations are almost comically souped up with cushy strings, ringing brass, and more harps than you'd ever want to hear. One saving grace is the underrecorded soprano Phyllis Curtin, who sings a lovely version of "O Holy Night." Also on hand is the St. Kilian Boy Choir, which has an unusually robust sound. --David Patrick Stearns

    5 out of 5 stars A Bright & Joyous Christmas Concert !.......2000-05-21

This is a wonderful Christmas anthology, with legendary performers, a bright little pipe organ, and a sparkling small brass ensemble. In many other Christmas albums, huge choirs and orchestras overwhelm the listener; here the 2 small choirs & their accompaniment are in perfect balance. With excellent clarity and timing, the songs are crisp and delightful! They bring back the joy & idealism of Christmas that I loved as a child.

The second half of the CD features a small orchestra, a delightful children's choir, & a wonderful soprano, again all in perfect balance and sharpness. The bright arrangements and clear performances make this a memorable Christmas recording!

Exelete disco.

    5 out of 5 stars A Slice of History!.......2003-11-15

This is a fantastic CD! I wish I knew more about the details of these recordings, because I suspect that some of them have been gathered from unusual sources. Because of the sound quality, I wouldn't be surprised to find that Cole Porter's own rendition of Cest Magnifique was recorded at a party or other informal occasion. It has that kind of intimate feeling.

At any rate, don't be put off by the fact that some of the recordings don't have the polished, studio sound of modern recordings. It is absolutely incredible hearing these Cole Porter hits being done by such varied artists as Mel Torme, Bobby Short, Rosemary Clooney, Jo Stafford, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Marian McPartland (the wonderful jazz pianist).

You can't help but feel that you are experiencing history when you listen to this CD. I only wish that I had realized that all three volumes were available as a boxed set. Must buy that next! (ASIN: B00001T3IP).
