5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2007-05-04

Another of my favorites, great music for long car ride. My children are now enjoying. Wonderful love songs & vocals.

5 out of 5 stars The most Beautiful Music in the World.......2007-04-16

Besides the ultracool roxers like "Knockin' on Every Door" and
"Physical Fascination" just to name a few,
what stands out for me above all is the beauty
of the songs; "Watercolors in the Rain", "Spending my Time",
"Perfect Day"......all of them.

I am always surprised how much I still love this album after
over 15 years of listening!
I wonder why? And the answer is: I don't know.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Powerpop.......2006-06-07

If you have never been introduced to Roxette this album is from when they were in their hey day and sold over 10 million copies so its gotta be worth a look.
The great thing about this album is practically every song on it could be a single. In fact I sometimes wonder why some of the other songs aren't.
Joyride is classic bubblegum powerpop with that trademark whistle and the wonderful balloons. Great hooklines.
Hotblooded is an overlooked single - it really rocks, and has a kind of blues souly feel to it. Harmonica is awesome.
Fading Like A Flower - another single, slow at first launching into great powerpop
Knocking On Ervery Door - This is a cool song swith a funky beat. Could make you dance. Cool lyrics. Could have been a single too.
Spending My Time - Beautifully melancholic, great vocals, bittwersweet, a good remix of this can be found on the Rarities album by the way.
I Remember You - Quite a rocky number, but also blues soul influences too.
Watercolours in the Rain - Marie wrote this song and from listening to it it really is a pity she hasn't written more. This is one of my all time favourites. It has a beautiful feel to it. One of their best ballads ever. Should have been a single.
The Big L - Rocky power pop. The video is quite porno i have to say.
Soul Deep - Soul deep exactly. Originally on Pearls of Passion their first album, re-released for international market.
Do you get Excited - another beautiful song. Ballad.
Church of your Heart - Another favourite. This song has great guitar on it and Per is great on it. It grew on me this one.
Small Talk - Souly number
Physical Fascination - This is a really funky song. Bowie-ish in some respects. Its kinda different.
Things Will Never Be the Same - Awesome Powerpop with a flamencoish feel to it in some places.
Perfect Day - One of my all time favourites. I think this is also one of Marie's favourite to sing. It is apparently a very hard one to sing. It is a real beauty. Should have been a single. Great closer to the album.
The song order is well arranged on the album to take you through a great journey.
Enjoy

5 out of 5 stars P-O-P Heaven.......2006-05-27

Thinking back now, I realize how truly blessed I was to be coming of age and be able to buy my own records precisely in 1991. Sit back and reflect for a moment and I'm sure those of you who entered their teenage years around that time can recall a veritable barrage of amazing ambums from that particular year: Nirvana's Nevermind, Metallica's Black Album, Guns N' Roses' Use Your Illusion 1+2 & Michael Jackson's Dangerous (which spawned more singles than any album I can remember) and a host of Greatest-albums from artists like Queen, among others. And here in Denmark, where I'm from, rockers DAD released their pinnacle album, Riskin' It All. Now, alongside all of those there was a plucky duo (duette) from Sweden who were determined to claim their piece of the pie. They were & are Roxette and Joyride was the album with which they accomplished just that. My story with this record is like many you all can tell. I was visiting a friend and suddenly he says 'Hey I got something you should hear' and proceeds to put on Fading Like A Flower. I'm a sucker for power ballads, always will be, and needless to say I was hooked and sang it all the way home. So, inevitably, I bought the album (on Cassette, no less - I would switch to CD's the following year) thinking that if there was just a couple more songs as great as Fading on there I would like it. I started playing it...and then I found myself completely and helplessly unable to stop playing it! I simply fell in love with practically every single track on that damn thing - and now, 15 years later, I still get a kick out of putting it on. If THAT's not the definition of great music then I'll gladly admit that I've missed something. Yes, there are a couple of fun filler tracks but it's also very varied album and the percentage of great songs is nothing short of astounding! I would not hesitate to proclaim this one of the great pop records of all time. And in a way, I'm glad that Roxette decided to mature their sound after this. Because I honestly can't see how even they could have begun to try and top this...
So, in closing, if you're looking for a fun, energetic pop/rock album that features great songwriting to boot, then hunt this up. You shouldn't be dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Ride.......2006-05-17

I bought the tape, when tape was still available!, in 1991, when I was [...]. That was 15 years ago!! As I read the reviews and hear the music, it brings me memories of how much I love this album. It is my very first album I ever bought. I saw the video for joyride, and liked the chorus very much. I didn't know there were so many hits on this album. Fading like a flower, excellent ballad. Church of the Heart, another excellent song. Excellent guitar arrangement, in my opinion. the Big L, catchy chorus. I used to listen to this tape to fall asleep. I think that's why this is one of the reasons why I like it, it is almost inbedded in my head. I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16

A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28

From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.

5 out of 5 stars A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24

Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.

4 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22

Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All.......2006-08-17

Though they're all very good to great (except "Mad Flavor" which recycles a few older songs for some reason), "Joyride" is my favorite Lida Husik CD. Lyrically strange (which I love), the melodies on this album are terrific and I just adore her kinda husky voice. I can't think of an artist to compare Lida with-she's that unique. Dreamy, warm and wonderful. Check out "Green Blue Fire" if you enjoy this CD-it's Lida gone electronica.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD of the Last 5 Years.......1999-02-09

Have you ever had a CD that was so brilliant that you didn't play it very often for fear of getting used to it? This CD, and Lida's other magnum opus (Fly Stereophonic) are like that. There is an aesthetic on both of these albums that make you think of Heaven. Although she is almost totally unknown, her music, at least for this listener, comes as almost as big a splash (speaking in terms of pure ear-candy pop), compared to what came before it as the Beatles first records did. There is not a single dud song on the entire CD, and one of the things I like most about it is that in terms of tonality it is pure warmness and sweetness with none of the harshness that is often mixed in with even some of the most beautiful passages of music from the 90s (Sonic Youth and Nirvana, two of my previous all time favorites, fall into that harshness and sweetness category). This is an album (also Fly Sterephonic) that always get my heart racing when I play them. Just one play-through has me humming the tunes for days afterwards. Also, the guitar-work on this album is just so GREAT (it's more a question of Lida's aesthetic taste and stylings than raw technique), that it inspired me to take up the guitar again after a hiatus of many years. Many of Lida's lyrics if examined closely tend toward the strange and occasionally nutty, but being 34 years old now, I don't try to form my worldview or theology from my favorite music, so it's all right. For me it just adds to the appeal of this very original artist. Enough said. Joe Bob says check Lida out! Also, if you like Lida, make sure you check out Mazzy Star, which is as good, but coming from a totally different part of the emotional spectrum.

5 out of 5 stars Babe in Dreamland.......1998-05-16

Lida Husik's deep, soft voice floats inexplicably over the guitar-rock music of this album as though she had discovered antigravity. "Mother Richard" is an anthem for nothing in particular, "Persinthia Lawdro & John" is a mysterious record of happy times, and "Mickey Minnie" is the most obtuse beauty you'll ever hear. Music for smarty-pants to sleep by.

These songs are hot, sweet, and teeming with rhythmic divinity. Turn it up and dance it off.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars brilliant artist transformed, interpreted... .......2007-02-01

This 2 cd set is gorgeous. As an adoring Mirah fan (just add me to the list), I always check out krecs to see what's new with her. I was hesitant at first- I often find remixes to be disjointed- but took a chance knowing that she is a fervant collaborator. I was not disappointed. It's clear the artists have been given free reign. Many of her familiar tunes are elongated, distorted, and certainly changed. Her often succinct style is developed into layered patterns, which some might find jarring at points (think it was as I listened to the Mt. Erie track that I thought the cd must have a scratch, surely it was intentional)... patiently I waited as the seams came together, overlapping into a collage of familiar pieces, an essence of the original, but really nothing like it. Fruits of Your Garden is heartbreakingly beautiful, and the only new piece on the track (in the sense that it has unreleased lyrics). I couldn't stop listening to it. Do yourself a favor- buy this album (2 for the price of 1, c'mon), and keep your mind open to a totally different Mirah experience.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz at its best.......2005-12-23

This is one of the overlooked greats in the jazz canon.

In eleven spectacularly varied tracks, Wycliffe Gordon (the trombonist for many Wynton Marsalis bands over the years) shows you everything that a trombone can do in the hands of a skilled musician.

Gordon is backed by an impressive line-up of modern-day greats, including Victor Goines on sax and clarinet.

The band rocks, croons, improvises and shows more originality and pure energy that you're likely to find in any recent recording.

The "joy" in The Joyride truly lives up to its name. Try it and see.

I have much praise for this GRUNGE record made by the great Oleander. Their CDs are progressively better, and I adore all 3 progressively more. I mean that I love all 3 albums but I love this the most for being most complete and cutthroat, the second album Unwind second for being least complete/least cutthroat/second most grunge/most inspired/most emotional/most captivating/best songwriting, and the first album February Son for being second most complete/second most cutthroat/not really that grunge if you really know what grunge is/occasionally inspired/emotional/captivating.

I don't usually rate the tracks, but:
    1. HANDS OFF THE WHEEL - not captivating, grunginating
    2. DON'T BREAK MY FALL - not captivating, grunginating
    3. FOUNTAIN & VINE - Greatness, found their grunge, different vox good

    5 out of 5 stars Kick-Ass.......2006-01-14

This is the most Kick-Ass CD I ever bought. I will be rocking the world until I die with this CD crankin at 40. Oldeander rocks this f-in world. Hell Yeah man, that's right you would man, you would.

    5 out of 5 stars Much love..........2004-04-10

I love these guys. Not many people have heard of them (or in my experiances anyway!) I have seen them in concert and I just think that they are great!!

5 out of 5 stars This Plain Rocks.......2003-07-08

Recently freed from their major label shackles, Oleander sound better for it. Songs like "30,60,90" and "Off & On" rock harder than anything they've ever done and crackle with energy. Such enthusiasm pervades the entire disc and even shows on lower key numbers, like "Runaway Train" and "Fountain & Vine." It's a shame that such a quality record wasn't released on a major label with more promotional clout. Regardless, if you like straight ahead no-frills rock, it's difficult to knock this. Pick it up.

    5 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring.......2003-06-08

while on the surface it sounds like a slight departure from earlier works, this album is honest to "essence" that is the most under-appreciated bands in rock! A good mix of acustic ballads, and guitar heavy uptempos. Even casual listeners will be awed by "Runaway Train," "Rainy Day," and the unique sound and lyrics of "Fountain and Vine"

5 out of 5 stars A Pure Joy To Ride.......2007-06-08

This CD is hi energy. The name is perfect. It has replaced my regular rode music. This is what smooth jazz was meant to sound like. That is if you really feel that you have to categorize this sweet sound. Well check it out for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

      5 out of 5 stars What A Great Ride!!!.......2006-12-15

I can't believe that anyone would give this album anything lower than four stars. I give it a deserving 5 stars because it cooks baby! Stanley T is something special on that sax. I especially enjoyed 'Rivers Invitation' and 'Gravy Train', with the latter being my personal favorite mainly because of the amazing Kenny Burrell. This is definitely road trip music! Put this one on when the sun is going down and your driving home after a long day's work and it will instantly put a smile on your face and tranquility in your soul. Herbie Hancock is nothing short of spectacular! You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Stan and Oliver.......2006-10-05

Two things distinguish this CD - Oliver Nelson's charts and Turrentine's superb playing. Nelson was going through a great arranging period at this time, doing marvelous things with his big band. The excellent albums he made with Jimmy Smith come to mind immediately while listening to this CD, and one tune in particular (GRAVY TRAIN) has a very strong flavor of a Smith-Nelson monster hit. Nelson is an excellent colorist in his charts: LITTLE SHERI makes interesting use of flutes and MATTIE T. features the brass section nicely. Stanley is the chief soloist on all the tracks, and he really shines on the gutsy RIVER'S INVITATION. A TASTE OF HONEY is an up-tempo waltz, one of the better versions of this song I know. Herbie Hancock has a compelling solo on the blues A KETTLE OF FISH. It's nice to have this album around again.

3 out of 5 stars Big Band Stan.......2006-08-26

Modern big band music...you have to wonder what it would have sounded like without the ON Orchestra and over production. Did this stuff ever sell. Think CASINO ROYALE soundtrack without the hooks or Dusty Springfield. BN should have RVG'd LOOK OUT instead of this one. I am not a fan of big band jazz or over produced jazz like some of the Verve and all of the CTI stuff from mid 60's to early 70's. Listen to the sound samples here before you buy. Having said that Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth and More Blues and Abstract Truth are essential jazz listening as well as the Gil Evans stuff. This is just way over produced/charted. Stanley T is still GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars Mattie T. swings like hell!.......2006-07-07

What a combination Stanley Turrentine with the famous Oliver Nelson (Jimmy Smith- Bashin') Band.
Mattie T. is the highlight of this session. The band swings like a fire ball!
      You gotta hear this beauty!
