Now challenging the irrepressible techno label, Soma, as Scotland's most consistently excellent dance music label, Glasgow Underground have their roots more in the legacy of American house, the Paradise Garage, and deeply spaced-out producers such as Larry Heard and Deep Dish. Their third showcase avoids any narrow parochial visions, thankfully, making for a refreshingly cool sweep of global grooves. There are throwbacks to the minimal bleep of 1989 (Cassio, Powder Productions), freestyle disco wig-outs that are purest Larry Levan (Love Rec), and, best of all, the man who really should be bigger than Prince--Romanthony, the James Brown of house music, elevating the funk on "Bring U Up." Upbeat but not hi-NRG grooves that build from a James Brown-like funk to a cool-sophisticated dance beat. Amazing melodies, not over-produced, form a perfect backdrop to dinner, cocktail parties. The feel reminds one of Lazy Dog; if you liked that, you'll like this.

More for Relaxing than Dancing.......2001-01-05

I bought this with the impression the album had more bass and funky beats. While I was disappointed that this wouldn't be a CD for most parties, I do like to listen to it to relax and let my mind flow. If you choose to buy this, I hope you get a better copy than I did. My case came broken (I can't open it all the way) and the first time listening to disk one, there were several skips in a few different songs.
