Taken literally, this album's title is sure to cause endless arguments. Nothing from Dirty Mind, not a trace of the early anthem "Controversy," no "Erotic City"--no non-LP cuts at all, save some edited single versions--and a cold shoulder to the criminally out-of-print Gold Experience. Damn. As a compendium of 17 key A-sides from 1979 to 1992, however, The Very Best of Prince is (ahem) a quick-'n'-dirty review of the days when the Artist was, in the estimation of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, one of the weirdest musicians in the Top 10. Blessed with both creative cunning and the wish to reach every listener possible, Prince revitalized rock and soul modes from the sex-crazed ("Little Red Corvette") to the cryptically spiritual ("Purple Rain"). Often he blurred lines between attitudes as surely as he did musical ones; the New Testament image of "Thieves in the Temple" became in his hands a complaint about a stolen girlfriend. Though a fine party artifact, this disc is still likely to prove too scanty even for many casual Prince fans. --Rickey Wright

With her exotic beauty and steamy voice, Sade couldn't help but be a star. Taking the more sensuous elements of island beats, smooth jazz, and R&B, Sade scored major hits with the continental feel of "Smooth Operator" and the sultry stylization of "Your Love Is King." Her voice was often criticized for being thin, yet she made it work to her advantage with songs like the haunting "Jezebel," on which her delivery added the vulnerability necessary to the song. Sade sounded best when she stuck to the lower register, and there is nothing thin about her dynamic handling of her torch song "Is It a Crime." "The Sweetest Taboo" was one of her last great moments before years of mediocrity, chronicled here by the lifeless "Stronger Than Pride" and the limp "Nothing Can Come Between Us." "No Ordinary Love" was a return to form with the smoky richness back in her vocals and the urban/island feel of her first release. Best of Sade goes right up to her hit "Pearls," which, remixed, became a dance floor hit. I got this because of one of the Songs "Love is stronger than pride" that got my curiosity, but the singer was disappointing and the songs too. She sings like a robot and has no mentionable range. I donated the cd to the local library. The shipping and price were, as usual, perfect, no problem in that area.

There's no organization to the music on this cd which has always been one of the great joys of a Van Morrison release where one song seems to lead to another and the sound as a whole is like listening to one inspiring arrangement but even with that in mind this collection is wonderful. Rather then having one large spiritual experience, you get 20 small spiritual miracles. Because to me, Van's music has always been so full of soul it is like a spiritual ride.

I'd recommend listening to Van. He's a poet. He's able to say what I'm thinking. And I'm going to see him one day because I have a ticket to go to an upcoming concert....like his concerts.Glad he comes to LA. So this is just a CD to get me in the mind frame. But even without that I'd listen to these. I guess I can IPOD my favorites now....

I had this disc once before and it was stolen. Loved it so much I had to buy it again. I wish it cotained Tupelo Honey and Into the Mystic. Other than that I love this disc . I recommend this to anyone. Whether you are a big fan or just only know a couple of his songs. Lively and uplifting. Great for traffic jams.

Then you obviously don't own this CD. Fix that sometime soon. Any album with Brown Eyed Girl and a bunch of crappy songs is still worth a purchase, but you get lots more: Three good songs by Them (garage-band anthem Gloria, Baby Please Don't Go, Here Comes the Night) and several great songs by Van himself: the aforementioned Brown Eyed Girl, Sweet Thing, Moondance, And It Stoned Me, Domino, Jackie Wilson Said, Cleaning Windows and the previously-unreleased Wonderful Remark especially stand out, though there's more.
Still, it's not perfect. I don't care how popular Have I Told You Lately is, I don't like it. In my mind it's a sap-fest from someone who isn't really sappy. Same with Queen of the Slipstream. Get rid of these two, as well as Dweller on the Threshold and Warm Love. Swap in Madame George and Caravan. Then you'll have the true Best of Van Morrison.

No other Otis compilation quite satisfies the way the old double-LP best-of does, but never mind: any way you hear Redding's many great moments is a good one. The Very Best splits ballads and up-tempo stuff half-and-half, letting you hear the great one's humanity in every mood--the pile-driving rock of "Respect," the preaching fervor of "Try a Little Tenderness," the nascent reflection of "Dock of the Bay." The material brought me back to the late sixties 1968, with memories of his death, December of that year and the coming out of the Beatles White album that same month. It has been a long time since a performer was of his ilk.

Otis Redding was one of the greats of soul. He was taken early at the age of twenty- six in a plane crash just three days after recording the song which would be his first number one on the charts, 'Sittin on the Dock of the Bay' That tremendous song is here. It has so much both in its lyric quality and the gripping power of its music. These are its lyrics" I heard it first many years ago and it has been playing in my mind ever since.

There are also other outstanding works here. Redding reportedly did not want to do 'Try a Little Tenderness' but his version is an original and strong one.
The grainy coarseness of his voice was nonetheless lyrical, catching and upbeat in its way.
This is 'Soul Music ' at its best.

How do you condense 15 years of music down to 76 minutes? In the case of this survey of the second phase of R.E.M.'s career, the answer is: Exceptionally well. The dangling carrot for diehards is two new songs; the rapid fire "Bad Day" hurtles along like the kissing cousin of "It's the End of the World as We Know It," while "Animal" is anchored by a majestic drone reminiscent of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows." In a surprising, but gratifying move, the rest of the program shortchanges the band's breakthrough, Out of Time (no "Shiny Happy People"), to better accommodate movie soundtrack contributions, and spotlight gems from the less commercial, post-Bill Berry albums Reveal and Up; with its baroque piano and multi-tracked vocal harmonies, the Beach Boys homage "At My Most Beautiful" is particularly gorgeous, while the burbling keyboards and slightly dazed singing of "All the Way to Reno" will appeal to Flaming Lips fans. --Kurt B. This is good collection of songs from R.E.M. from their Warner Brothers years but there are some hits missing. The obvious hits are there, like Man On the Moon, What's The Frequency, Kenneth?, Everyboby Hurts, etc. This collection is of their mainstream hits while there is another collection of hits "The IRS Years", which are songs from before 1988, which were hits in nerdy college radio stations.

Not to be mistaken with Bill Withers's Greatest Hits or even the 1994 best-of with which it shares its name, Lean on Me nevertheless shares much with those two earlier retrospectives--notably the likes of such '70s soul-pop gems as the title track, "Ain't No Sunshine," "Lovely Day," and "Use Me." Like the earlier Lean on Me, this remastered selection includes 18 tracks, 13 of which overlap with the '94 set. Withers's oeuvre is something less than expansive: he recorded 10 albums for Sussex and Columbia between 1971 and 1985, then gracefully exited the business with three top 10 hits to his credit. The singer's warm vocals and wise lyrics have held up splendidly through the years, making him a likely candidate for periodic rediscovery. This anthology stands as the title of choice for the next wave of soul fans Withers wins over. --Steven Stolder

Although their first album appeared in the early '60s, it was with 1975's "They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)" that the Spinners really got moving. They emerged as one of the poppiest of the '70s soul bands, which cost them dearly in credibility. But their best songs were stunning--and by the time original vocalist Philippe Wynne left the group, in 1977, they'd racked up enough successes to stuff a greatest-hits package from top to bottom. Atlantic's 1978 "Best of the Spinners" LP was that package, although this release augments it with later hits like "Working My Way Back to You" and "Cupid." Another anthology package, a double-CD released by Atlantic Records, packs in even more, but the essentials are all here. --Gavin McNett

Great collection of one of the best soul groups ever!.......2007-05-27

This is by far the best and cheapest 1 disc collection of The Spinners incredible Discography that I have ever seen, and the inside booklet also includes a nice little narraration of the group themselves.
Where to start with The Spinners themselves? They are incredible, and thru-out quite a few personnel changes they still kept there essance.
If you purchase this, expect to hear a talented gifted lead singer, with a crew of equally talented singers backing him up. Expect Dense instrumentation, much more dense, and plush than most of the Music of this genre at the time. Production wise it pulls influence from both Soul, and Disco, which is an interesting combo, because I hate disco but like Soul, and I LOVE this.
Lyrically they are solid too. The songwriters for The Spinners were in the background, but should not be treated second rate. They had skill... Expect most of the songs to be love songs, but there is other topics. I enjoy the interesting Social Commentary on Poverty and the effect it can have on a childs self esteem on "Ghetto Child".

Simply put, this is a must have for a true Music Collector, or lover. Cop this.

I ordered this for my mom. She loves the whole disc thus 5 stars. This is for those who only want one disc of The Spinners very best songs. For these wanting more, get "Definitive Soul", their 2-disc greatest hits which came out (also from Rhino) last year.

The Very Best of the Spinners.......2007-01-15

These are great tunes done in the particular "Philly" style that we loved then and still do - amazing really how timely they still are - but, maybe I'm just "stuck" in my younger years - still fun. Plus, the Spinners didn't have too much else (to my knowledge) but this is the best.

The sound is excellent but this is not a remastered compilation as some reviewers have claimed. It is an AAD recording made from the original singles masters.

The joy of being 'up on the roof '.......2006-06-12

The Drifters have a number of very good songs, including 'Under the Boardwalk' and 'Broadway'.But they have, and this is the reason I am writing this review one of the greatest of all songs of their time, the incredible 'Upon the Roof'.
This song is one which simply lifts the spirit up in tremendous joy. And it is one of those songs which can be heard over and over again without ever seeming to lose its freshness.

I was quite disappointed with this CD and Ben E King's " The Best
Of" because both are mono records. Except when I heard the songs
back then on the radio, on most LP's- released in the 60's-
all of their recordings were in full stereo. The songs are
great, no doubt, but should I have known this before I would
have chosen other "greatest hits" compilations in stereo.

I'M A BIG DRIFTERS FAN & THIS CD HAS MANY OF MY FAVORITES. THE ONLY ONE MISSING WAS THE BEN E. KING SONG "STAND BY ME". OTHERWISE THIS WAS A GREAT COLLECTION.

This is an early collection that gathers the group's hits up to 1975. While they continued to make the charts (albeit sporadically) for another decade, the Stylistics' golden years had drawn to a close by the time this record hit the stands, so almost all of their key tracks are here. Best of the Stylistics Vol. 2 and All-Time Classics cover different bases, while Greatest Love Hits is a theme compilation with some overlap. Yet another compilation, Very Best of the Stylistics, largely has the same material as the Best of... package. It was first released on vinyl on the old Avco label way back in 1975. "The Best of the Stylistics" offers up 10 of the biggest and best hit recordings from this important 1970's soul group. Yes, you will find all of the groups Top Ten hits including "Betcha By Golly, Wow", "You Are Everything" and the groups biggest smash of all "You Make Me Feel Brand New" from the spring of 1974. Add to that great hits like "Break Up To Make Up", "I'm Stone In Love With You" and the snappy "Heavy Fallin' Out" and you certainly have the makings of a fine collection. Yet, there are obvious flaws with "The Best of the Stylistics" that really need to be addressed.
First and foremost, in this day and age a mere 10 tunes is woefully inadequate. Fans of the Stylistics will tell you that there are at least a half dozen important recordings missing from this collection. Any decent Stylistics collection would have to include songs like "You'll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart)", "Star On A TV Show", "Thank You Baby" and one of my personal favorites "Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)" from 1975. In addition, this disc offers nothing in the way of liner notes which for a collector like myself is a huge drawback. In 2005, Amherst records released the 2 disc set "The Very Best of The Stylistics...and More" featuring a total of 38 songs. I would have to agree with another reviewer that this is a bit of overkill and is probably more music than I really want or need. And there still does exist a single CD "Best of the Stylistics Volume 2" but this is another disc I that simply can not get all that enthused about.
The bottom line is that it is high time that the record company released an updated 16 or 17 track single disc collection of this important 1970's group. I would hope that such an offering would include liner notes, chart information and some photos. In the meantime, "The Best of the Stylistics" is still probably your best bet. The vocal stylings of lead singer Russell Tompkins Jr. and the rest of the group have stood the test of time. The Stylistics are certainly a group that deserves better than this.

I thought I only knew a couple of numbers by the Stylistics, but as I listened to the entire CD, I know them all and loved everyone of these songs. These guys are much better then I remember and deserve more air time and many more awards. This group now has risen to be in my top ten of all time favorite groups, and that is saying alot for someone now over 50 who grew up every night listening to Motown via KOMA from Oklahoma City.

A Great Compilation of Stylistics Hits.......2007-01-04

I added this album to my wish list after hearing some of the Stylistics tunes at my cousin's wedding, including "Stone In Love With You". The Stylistics are a classy group with both soul and also musical marketability and they composed beautiful, memorable hits that are really moving emotionally. This is a good way to introduce yourself to the Stylistics. It's also good music for weddings and other occasions where people dance.
