Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not Obscure At All.......2004-02-02

Undoubtedly, Jude The Obscure is on the verge of breaking out. This album is a near work of hardcore genius. With an excellent use of odd time signatures, embedded securely within some amazing breakdowns, this is what a hardcore album should be. Fresh song structures, laced with original melodies and amazing vocals, Jude The Obscure provides an amazing debut album that can undoubtedly stand side by side with that of Hot Damn by Every Time I Die and Opposite Of December by Poison The Well. If Coldest Winter is just a start to what Jude The Obscure is capable of, the future is sure to be bright for this talented Canadian band.

5 out of 5 stars canada goes hardcore.......2003-12-24

After also hearing 'stab' from Jude the Obscure's latest release, "The Coldest Winter," I was in shock. This group of five musicians that just so happen to be canadian have created some of the most intense melodic hardcore I've ever heard. With the song being over 4 minutes, and no sign of any sort of song structure, I instantly fell in love. I ordered the cd from my local record store, only to find out the album is even better. James' screaming vocals rip through the nearly-50-minute album, threatening anything in it's path. Chuck and Jordan's and grant's guitars go full-throttle from beautifully written melodic finishes to insanely timed palm muting riffs. Of course, Jason follows along wonderfully on his drums, with a double-kick that is so fast it sounds like a buzz.
Overall, I'd have to say "the coldest winter" is the best hardcore album i've ever bought. It's beautifully written and contains something for every alternative + hardcore fan.

3 out of 5 stars Sigh........2003-09-10

I downloaded their song Stab from the One Day Saviour website a while before the album came out, and I freaking loved the song, so along came the album, and guess what...no pretty singy stuff at all almost besides the part in Stab. At times it just sounds like they are saying 'Lookee we can play our guitar and double-bass really fast!' If they'd just stop showing off, and start singing once in a while, I would adore them. So if you dig showboaty assault-rifle-sounding guitars and drums and some random guy screaming into what sounds like a telephone, peep it.
